Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
It took me quite a while, that's for sure. For the longest time I played with the idea of getting an MSD but I couldn't find one that suited what I wanted. I very much preferred the more mature teenager/young adult type and most MSDs look too young for my preference. But anything larger just seemed too expensive. So for a long time I thought I might get a dollzone Megi or a Kid Delf Bory. But both models just weren't what I wanted. To be honest, I really liked the Crobidoll Ys (and still do!) but he's beyond my price range at the moment. Finally, I decided "to hell with it" and began browsing through SD sized dolls. And finally, FINALLY I decided on the Luts Delf El.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
There wasn't really any moment... I just saw him and I liked him the best out of all my options and then I began to fall more in love with him as I browsed through photos of other Els and considered how I could customize him and make him my own. ^^

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
He hasn't come yet. I ordered him a couple of weeks ago, but so far I don't have any regrets.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
This question doesn't really apply to me...

Unfortunately (maybe) I paid for every cent of it with hard-earned money I'd be saving up the entire time I was considering which doll I wanted to buy. Perhaps the fact that I had to struggle to gather enough money will make him seem all the more precious to me when he does come.

 

It was supppppppppppppper hard to decide! There are just so many choices - it's a bit mind-boggling...! I was super young at the time, and the funds for my first BJD were the ENTIRETY of my first ever paycheck!!! But when I decided I decided. And I don't regret it - I can (and will) always buy more dolls, but my first will always be very very special to me~

 

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? Once upon a time when I first started getting interested in BJDs I found the Luts site. And I saw the El sculpt, and that was the end of things. Little did I know he was immensely popular. (And justly so, in my biased opinion)
And when did you know that this doll should be your first? Right about when I decided I was going to cave and buy one. Years later.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one? Every once in awhile I fawn over the more "mature" sculpts...some of the Senior Delf, the Ryu, some of the Sooms...but then I look at my boy again and I just melt.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it? BW Luts El(I was convinced I wanted a NS until I saw him up on the marketplace)...his name is Loren, and he's here to stay.

I wanted something smaaall xD lol I thought even 40cm is too much.. but then I saw 60cm dolls irl and they weren't that big o_O
So I could buy kid delf I REALLY liked, not smaller dolls which are just "cute".. ^__^

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I knew I wanted that "character" and kid delf ani fits him the most ^_^;

I never liked dolls when I was little o_o so this one will be my 1st doll ever ^_^

Yeah, I had to choose myself.. it was hard!

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I didn't. I just sent a site with Bobobie guy to one of my friends just as a interesting thig saying, he's lovely. My friends got me Apollo within 3 months ;]

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Again - it wasn't my decision. Yet I have another guy which I wanted for 2 years or so since I accidentaly saw photos of Ducan on the net not knowing what kind of doll he is.

I belive that I would get Apollo anyway even if I haven't got him as a gift. He's really nice and he's one of the cheapest so I could afford him after half a year of saving ^_^

I got 2 dolls and I still keep them ;] I think both guys are my first dolls - first I get, and first I ordered myself

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well my friend sort of decided on the website (Dollmore) so I browsed ALL the dolls. There were loads that I loved... but flocke just called out to me! I couldn't stop thinking about her. she had to be mine :P I did look at other websites like luts and fairyland, but my mind was already made up. Plus I though her price was perfect for me as a beginner BJD collector

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
About a day after I spotted her lol I like to sleep on decisions. Plus I always seem to feel differently about stuff when I wake up... but low an belold I love her when I woke up

I had a little 6 second thought of... "ooo I love that 1, should I have got him?" But then I snapped out of it. I love Flocke. This is 1 thing I dont think I'm going to change my mind about.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
DM Kid Flocke She hasn't arrived yet, but I imagine I'll be keeping her forever, just for being my first

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
She is a present but I picked everything about her My boyfriend loves to get me presents, but also likes to make sure they are exactly what I want!

 

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I browsed different websites and sculpts months before I bought my first boy. I found AoD through a friend on LJ and I fell in love with her boy. His sculpt wasn't he one for me, but it was through that I discovered my Noah!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
No matter how many dolls I looked at or how many sites I visited, I kept coming back to his sculpt. That was when I knew that he was the one for me.

Surprisingly, no. I was in love with his sculpt before I got him and fell twice as hard when I opened up his box. When I saw him, I knew I had made the right decision. /cheesy story. XD

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
The only one I own is my first doll, and I plan to keep him no matter how deep I get into this hobby. I have a very special attachment to him and adore him to pieces.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, I was able to choose him. He was a present to myself for Christmas, but no one bought him for me.

It's really kind of interesting to see what other people are saying...especially people who have multiple dolls. Great thread.

 

How did you decide?
I don't specifically own a doll, more so his head right now. After I do the faceup...or commission a faceup(his sculpt is very hard to figure out)I will buy him a body and he will become my very first. I chose him because he's very unusual being he has 3 eyes...and I am customizing him to the max.

When did you know?
I thought about it for a few days...the 3 eyed thing kept sticking out in my head...

Did you get unhappy?
I'm not unhappy, I just feel odd scince I bought the head instead of an entire doll...and I'm having trouble finding examples of him...

Which doll is your first and do you still own?
dbdoll yelang. I just got him and he still has no body...soo yea I still have him...I don't beleive I'll sell him either scince I'm pretty much creating him and he is my first...

 

How did you decide
I wanted a doll fro Zephyr, a character who's been with me for years, so I looked for one that looked like him

When did you know
When I saw Enzyme's Hombre. The site's pics didn't look like Zephyr to me, but her Hombre showed me that I could make him. Plus I saw his body and the lean muscular fit well, and it's not totally accurate, slightly feminine hips if you ask me which actually fits Zephyr's strange physique perfect.

did you get unhappy
Unfortunately, the DAY after he got here my car decided to make a new, very loud noise, this put a huge damper on my happiness at having him home, because strange noises in my car = lots of money needed to repair, it's an endless cycle with my car. I decide to save up for something, my car breaks and eats the funds. It made me feel guilty that I just spent money on a doll when I now needed it for my car. But a bigger part was happy that he was already there, I worked extra shifts to save for him, if the car broke down before i got him the money would have been dumped into the car. I hate taking money out of savings, but a car is justifiable, a doll less so. As it turned out the sound wasn't nearly as expensive as I've grown to expect, so it worked out.

Which doll was your first/ still own
Zephyr is a limhwa limho mano. I can't imagine ever selling him, but I'm about to graduate college, and real life is looming like a terrifying void of uncertainty in front of me. . . I've no idea what will happen. If he goes, you can bet I will be kicking, screaming, and crying . . .

I chose him, he is my graduation gift to myself. . . I was saving for Limhwa's next ordering period, but then I found him from a DoA member in the marketplace, she hadn't been able to bond with him and wanted him to go to someone who could so he came home a little early . . . which is good because I get to bond with him before the craziness and he can be stress relief, I really need that during this last semester . . .

 

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I was surfing Volks one day and looking at all the SD they had on offer - but none of them even came close to fitting the character. They were all just too immature. Then I stumbled into the Dollfie Dream section and knew that's how I wanted to house User.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Pretty much after getting a look at the more mature face and body styles. [I admit to being shallow - it was the breasts that did me in. ]

I wasn't sure at first, but once I started getting her assembled and acquiring things for her, I fell pretty hard - the only way I'd change now is if I manage to find another mold that suits her better than what she has now.

User, Volks DD2, and a thousand times yes. ~

HAH! No, I bought her myself with the help of a bonus check from work.

 

It really wasn't that hard for me. I had stumbled upon doll site a few times before I found Tae, but I had just kind of said "Those are really cool, but I don't want to save up that much for one!" But when I saw him on the Souldoll site, I was like "Now this one I want!" He was the first doll that I actually wanted to save up for, so that's why I got him first. Of course after I got into the hobby I found all sorts of other dolls I wanted. xDD

 

My firs doll was a CP Shiwoo. I found out about the dolls on a Wednesday, I think it was three years ago I don't remeber, and that same day I bought my doll. And three years later I sitll have and haven't regretted it at all.

 

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
**I approached BJDs with caution. My favorite dolls are the ones that speak to me. There's no rhyme or reason, some of them just won't get out of my head. DIM Belita was that doll---she haunted me!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
**I was SO indecisive... I just could not imagine spending the $$! By the time I did, the doll of my dreams was no longer made! I bought DIM Eunbi hoping she would do.

Did you get unhappy with your choice?
**Of course! She was not Belita!

Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
**Yes indeed! I beat myself up for awhile over that one...

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
***and then I got over it. I found a blank Belita, found someone to do a face-up and sent Eunbi to a new home. Not far away, either---one of my friends bought her!

**OMG---I'd love someone to gift me a BJD! I made the choices and the payments.

 

it was killing me, with all the cute dolls!!
i kept changing my mind and took me two months to pick it!
i finally found a doll i couldn't resist, and now i'm waiting for it.

 

Though I haven't obtained him yet, when I first looked at BJD's, I was on a deviantart's website and looked at their persons friends and such.
It wasn't until I saw Hayden, Migidoll Ryu which belongs to Hiritai that I fell in love with the mold and him and decided that he was beautiful and perfect for Quill.
I can't wait to get my own Ryu! I just need to choose an appropriate body.

-I picked him because I was money conscious. I liked him, of course, but he wasn't my favorite.

-I don't know. I just got him. I had the cash, he seemd like a good choice. So he was my first.

-I was pretty disappointed when I got him. Like I said, he wasn't my favorite, and I couldn't bond with him for many reasons. I wished I had bought my dream doll instead, and I did after selling this one. I lost alot of money in the exchange.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
-My first doll was a DOT Lahoo. I sold him 1 month after I got him.

Yes, I got to choose him. Not alot of people I know are willing to by me gifts that cost over 100$, let alone a 500$ doll!

 

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
It was actually very difficult.. It took me a month to finally decide the doll company which I want to get my first BJD. I do know that I fell in love with Dream of Doll DoT Sha, and just felt like I need to get him home. And after a month of deciding whether to get him or to choose another doll from another company, I had always come back to see the page with the Sha pictures. Then I broke down and asked my mother's help to get him home. It was indeed difficult. I was deciding between a Ducan and a Sha during that time.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
He was calling out to me, and he was the first doll I fell deep in love with. I remembered debating myself whether to get a Ducan or Sha, then realizing Ducan has funny ears, then I decided to get a Sha instead.

Ohhh, no, I'm certainly happy with my choice. It was love at first sight when I saw his promo pictures and when I opened the box when he arrived, I feel deeper in love with him.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll is a Dream of Doll DoT Sha, and yes, I still own him. He's actually sitting on the table with me, holding his daughter now. :3

Yes, I was able to choose him. And no, sadly.. I paid with my own money that I had saved over the years.

 

I have been interested in these dolls for almost 10 years. I just ordered my first doll in December. At first I had only seen photos people took of their dolls I'd never been able to find a seller of these dolls. I'd googled and googled but came up dry. Then I lost net.

So a short while ago when my best friend finally became interested in the dolls and bought one I was able to begin finding the stores and I found DoA. So it was a long intermittent search but I am now awaiting my first doll.

I decided on Vesuvia almost by chance. I had a character forming for a possible doll I would hunt for later. Then I saw Vesuvia and I had just recently been approved for a line of credit from my bank. So the timing was right and I jumped on the chance. I still have other dolls that I'd like to buy of course but I won't until I have my Vesuvia in hand. It seems mostly chance that she is my first doll.

I of course don't have her yet so I can't say if I'll be unhappy with her. I don't think I will but one can never say for certain so I'll have to wait and see.

As for still owning her, well I don't even have her in hand yet. *cries* They have begun to ship but I got fullset so I am going to be waiting for a bit longer.

 

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

There wasn't a huge selection at the time as Volks was the primary company to go to in the early 2000s. I had never seen any BJDs before in person, so I was just choosing based on owner photos. I fell for the LE Ian, but since I couldn't acquire her I went for my 2nd love SD10 Megu!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I decided to save up money from part-time work, and purchased her as soon as possible.

I was never unhappy with my choice. Her mold is still one of my absolute favourites!

SD10 Megu and she is still amongst the family.

She definitely was not a present--my parents were astounded at her price (with inflation and customs it worked out to being almost $900).
