Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Hmm.....I was fighting over getting my dream doll, a CP Lishe. This as the VERY first doll I fell in love with. Then I realized that maybe a 60 cm was too big for me. Then I discovered Minifee Dolls!! :fangirl: But then I saw the price....which then led me to Bobobie. First I wanted the dolls simple b/c of the price. But upon further inspection, I didn't like some of the molds..But I loved the BBB sprite and bought her!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I looked at owners photos and saw the versatility of the mold! Depending on the faceup, the sprite can look completely different!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, it just that I wasn't prepared for the hard work of blushing, and faceups, etc...and NEARLY did irreversible damage....

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      BBB sprite. Still own her.

    2. heh! i don't know if i should post here but it seems like its somewhat in the topic range!

I don't have a doll yet! so i can't really answer the questions fully but i can answer them for what i expect!

but i was originally thinking about a bobobie/resinsoul mei because my grandparents are getting a doll for me and i cant ask for a REALLY expensive one. I thought about her for like a month on active searching and everything but i was a little uncertain about her posing . . . i changed my mind to Ciel (or pado) from Dollmore and still im not sure because their posing is amazing but ciel in some photos looks like she is about to cry and very few people have her to see how different faceups change her. then yesterday i went to a meetup and found no dollmore kids but a lovely resinsoul girl who was kicky but not glued sueded or wired but lovely and sooo tiny! i think i'll defiantly get her someday but since she is the cheaper doll and I'm getting sortof a freeby from my grandparents i was thinking of getting the more expensive one first so i didn't have to save up so much to get the other one . . . idk well on with the questions!

How did you decide which doll should be your first?
if its mei it was because she was cheap. but then i looked through the pictures and saw that she was beautiful - especially pictures on flicker
      http://www.flickr.com/photos/sfpro_studio/3031396863/in/photostream/
If it is Ciel then it was looking at all the photos of clothes on Dollmore and stumbling on the most interesting and yearning face i've ever seen . . . i just hope she doesnt choke me up whenever i see her in real life!
      http://www.dollmore.net/shop/step1.php?number=5779

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
      ehhh . . . when i picked her . . . whaaaa!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? do you wish / did you wish that you've oprdered another one?

I REEEEALLLLLY hope not . . . it gives me so much anxiety just to have to choose! i've been putting off reports and homework and spending weekends jut searching for informaition and photos and opinions!
some people here sold their first doll because itwas bad! i hope that i don't have to! it might break my heart (and my parents would think that i wasn't dedicated and just wanted a momentary thrill!)

ehh . . . I'd love it if anyone could respond or pm me if you have any suggestions. meow! :?

    3. I first discovered BJDs when I saw the episode of Japanorama featuring Super Dollfies. I just knew I had to have one at that point. So in my research I came across the address of the Tenshi no Sumika in L.A. It just happens to be a couple of miles from one of the manufacturing facilities owned by my company. We do IT and Telecomm support for them, usually remotely, but sometimes we have to make a trip out there to do hardware maintenance or installations. It's usually considered a punishment for the members of my team to have to be sent all the way out there for a week of long hours (we're based in Texas), so they were all a little surprised when I volunteered to go the last time a trip was needed. So I basically got free airfare to go out there and the overtime I had to put in for that week paid for a little more than half of an FCS doll. I can't say that I love very many of the Volks headmolds, but I knew my first doll had to be a real FCS from them.

    4. Unfortuneately I choose my first doll too fast, so we never bonded and after a couple of years I sold him, but the ones that I bought after him were really carefully selected. Buying the right dolls demands some patience of me, if I rush into things and just buy any doll that's pretty then it usually doesn't work out well.

It's all about choosing the right pretties, the ones that I'll still like after the first intense infatuation fades :sweat

    5. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? It was almost a month before my birthday and I had some pretty random things on my list and then boom! I remembered the Resinsoul dolls and went to have a good look at them. I hadn't noticed Bei before because I honestly had no idea how big she was/wasn't. When I learned she was 1/6th and was still considered a BJD and she could wear Barbie clothes I was instantly hooked.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first? After I talked it over my a Money-Handler and convinced him that getting a doll for my birthday would make me happy.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one? Considering she's not quite here yet I don't know. I mean, it's really tough picking out -one- doll from a super cute line up like BBB and RS has? I want them all buuuut that's not happening yet. XD
Which doll was your first and do you still own it? A ResinSoul Bei~ See above for the owning Question.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present? I was able to choose her, but she's still a present.

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
She was the perfect price range.
She seemed to have good responses and good quality.
      Her face was very beautiful.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I knew my Bobobie Mei would be my first doll ever since I looked at her ghostly display picture on Bobobie's main site...
I was contemplating between Iplehouse Harin and Iplehouse Iris...
Mei just blew them both away...

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
She isn't the best poser, I wish I could change that.
Other than that problem, I wouldn't change it...
      Maybe her elf ears...
But I've grown to love them.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Bobobie Mei was and still is my first doll.
      I only possess one.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I was able to choose it, but my friends and family had a say in it...
      A vote, in a way.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
It sorta happened. We searched for certain appearance, but again and again went back to look at a doll who was exact opposite of what we wanted then. On third day we decided that it's no use to fight this attraction, and ordered him. And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
On third day of looking for what we should buy. The "first" thing didn't really matter, as we were sure he won't be last. So it really was "we saw him first, we order him first", no big deal.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, not then and not now.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Unidoll Jace. Of course I still have him.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
No, and I won't appreciate such a present without consulting me first. I'm very picky about my dolls.

    8. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
By 'falling in love'. I honestly think it was like... fate or something. I wanted a 'tender' version of Sha, but I couldn't figure out what to do because it didn't exist...
...until three days later when they released tender elf sha. :)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The moment I saw him. I HAD to have him, no matter what. And because he was limited, I needed to get him before anyone else.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I'm very pleased with him~ ^-^ At first, I wasn't sure. His face-up wasn't what I expected, but I really, really love him. I wouldn't change anything~ (except maybe... restringing him? xD)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Oliver is my first and only doll. He's a dream of doll Tender Elf Sha.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I was able to choose, I asked my parents for him, and got him as one of my christmas presents this year~ (A Christmas gift that didn't come until March 19th. xD)

    9. I had a really, really easy time choosing my first doll. I saw the promotional pictures and immediately it was love. ♥ I have no regrets; I adore everything about her~

    10. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? I had been looking at different sites for about a year. And at that point knew I wanted one of the bigger boys for my first one. Then I found the BuddyDoll site.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first? The second I saw the first image for Mars at BuddyDoll I fell in love with him and ordered him immediately.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one? No. Everytime I look at him I fall in love all over again.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it? BuddyDoll Mars, and I will never get rid of him.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present? I picked him. Or should I say he picked me?

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, for my first doll I wanted it to be a twin. My twin sister and I have wanted to do that and at first, we had some ideas but we both fell in love with the two types of Floys~! I got the Floy2 and my twin got the elf Floy.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Well, when we first started looking at the Dollzone website, I didnt have a lot of interest until I saw the Floy2, I fell in love at first sight. I have always wanted a BJD with cat ears and I thought that he was the most perfect one that I have ever seen.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope, not at all. I am still loving my dear Mikaehl every single day, every time I look at him, the love that I had for him on that day grows stronger every day~!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first was a Dollzone Floy2 named Mikaehl, and yes, I still own him~!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes I was able to choose him xDDD and no he wasnt a present.

    12. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I like to think of my dolls as 3d 'drawings' of my roleplay characters. Like many others here, I'm an artist so they fit right in with me. I already have my two favourite characters from one roleplay as pullips (I'm hoping to 'resin-ate' them when I have the money) and I just couldn't bear to have one but not the other! So I decided to resin-ate Tami from another of my roleplays, from then on it was sculpt searching with a budget and mind to modify.
      AOD Qian was chosen.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Pretty much from the moment I saw her goddamn awful official pictures on the AOD site. Something clicked and I knew immediately that this would be Tami. Plus as a bonus she's not as expensive as alot of the other bjds I could have chosen which makes me far more comfortable about modding her.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I'm not unhappy but as of yet, she hasn't arrived. So we shall see, oh yes we shall see. (Pardon the Smeagol quote)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
She will be an Angel Of Dream Qian that will be modded to fit Tami's profile a bit better!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
She's partly a present, I saved every penny of my birthday money to add to the fund. So yes to both!

    13. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I did most of my research in body shape and quality, then I just happened to find a head I really liked that it came attached to.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
as soon as I saw her face. It was well proportioned, just realistic enough without being too real, just stylized enough without being too stylized, I hope that makes sense.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
She is still in the mail working her way to me so I haven't had a chance to regret anything;)

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I really came into this hobby as a clean slate. I didn't really know what to look for, and wasn't even sure that getting a doll was something I was going to do.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I essentially fell in love. I had been doing minimal research and found myself at Soom, looking at the Kyrie Nevermind fullset they had at the time. Everything about her just screamed to me that she was the doll I wanted, and with Soom's generous layaway program, I was able to convince my husband to let me get her.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I still love that doll. I haven't been displeased at all.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Soom's Kyrie Nevermind fullset. I still have her, allthough she has changed a little since I bought her.

    15. I can't recall how exactly I got about looking at the dolls, but it didn't take long for me to start badgering a friend whom I knew was a collector about them... I ended up spotting one (SDC Ren) that I just absolutely needed and started looking around(que "squee squee gush gush"~:D)... For about a month or so, nothing popped up, until I found an auction on Yahoo Japan for her head, but it came with an oldskin MSD body... The price was fairly low compaired to just heads or just bodies, so I relented and started bidding for it through a proxy...

To this day, I still haven't found a full Ren anywhere(I've only ever seen one other auction for the head, and it was priced at about the same as I got the whole mixed kit for...), so I can't say I was unhappy with it... I still wish I had managed to get a full set though(I'm still in love with her hair... but you can't seem to find anything for the SDCs out there or something...), but as none of them have popped up, there isn't much I can do about it... One day though, I'll get a stroke of pure luck and find her... That day, Ren will become a real girl and I'd be able to take her out on strolls and su..ch... Uhh... did I get off topic and start fantacising again...

Anyway, as it's only been a few months since she arrived, she's still here and spends most of her time getting into trouble to steal more attention from me away from work related horrors... Or from her new sisters... :doh

One day, I'll manage to either find the rest of the set and make her complete, but there's no way I'll go replacing her if I can help it~ Not that I can help myself trying to get her a few more sisters and friends to play with(or in her opinion, steal her time with me away)~

I :aheartbea Ren, but she needs to learn to share~

    16. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

My friend was like "zomg look at these dolls" on dream of doll, and I saw Twing-key <3 I loved her face and outfit. Then I saw Flocke and loved her pout <3 oooh

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I saw a Twing-key for sale on the Marketplace, and I loved her more
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
      hope not!
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
:< she's going to be my first

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
No, I paid it myself :sweat

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
For me the decision was easy - I had been fawning over the Soom MDs for months, and was pretty miserable about having missed Beryl and Sard (I'm a taurus, and really loved the hooved pair). I missed the ordering period for Heliot, and Amber didn't appeal to me. So when I check Soom and saw Cuprit, complete with ram horns and hooves, I knew I had to have her. I wavered for a day, and then ordered her.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

It was actually only after reading a thread here on DoA - I was looking for threads with photos of Beryl's hooves, and happened to find a reference to hooves in the Culprit discussion thread. Up until that point, I hadn't realised she had hooves. Going back to the Soom site and seeing her full release photos, complete with hooves, was what tipped me over the edge.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

I am a little nervous, I must admit. Cuprit's hooves are much less detailed than Beryl's/Sard's/Amber's. I'm hoping that they'll look better in person (I'm planning on painting mine, so the novelty of the clear resin won't really be able to make up for poor sculpting, if there is any =-=) I'm also a bit nervous about the rest of the MDs for this year... if they release another hoofed girl, she might turn out to be more 'perfect' than Cuprit is. I won't know what to do then... maybe look into whether anyone might want to trade.
      I'm fairly confident that I won't regret it, though. I have a character all planned for her already. The hooves are actually not even a part of her character (after all that trouble to get them!), so I might end up selling them if they aren't what I want (and put that money towards a new doll...) And I really do love her faceup (which I ordered) and her sculpt. And she seems to be a bit rarer than the other MDs, which is nice ^-^;

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Cuprit will be my first... she's on layaway right now, and won't get home until August, probably. She won't get sold unless something goes drastically wrong and I can't bond with her at all =-=

Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I chose her myself, but she was almost a 'present' from the government - I've put part of my stimulus package towards her, so I could do a 5/6 month layaway rather than a 4 month one.

    18. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?I was watching ebay when I was bored, then I saw a Volks MSD Midori in pre-school and felt in love

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Because she was so cute and perfect and I wouldn't even think about other dolls

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I was unhappy, bought a bluefairy before I bought a Midori, then I had so much regret and sold the BF and bought Midori.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I sold Midori to buy another doll and AGAIN regret!
Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yup,because Midori was on Volks website, now I want to have her again and it was a hard fight to find her,but I think I've found her :)

    19. I looked through a bunch of sites, not thinking I'd ever get one. I went to luts, saw the kid delfs, and just like every site I saw hollow shells of resin. The I saw the white skin Ani boy. THe name Seijun Yuumei popped in my head. Then I saw a eleven year old boy with long white hair and brown eyes and he looked like that doll. He dressed very strange, had OCD, was gay and had never known himself to be anything but. He was a very caring a gentle boy. He was born on halloween. He was German with the tiniest bit of Japanese from his father's father. He wasn't just a hunk of resin. He was Seijun Devon Yuumei. I was his Aunt Nikie. Godmother. His parents dies some decades ago. And he was mine. That was when I decided to buy one.
Not at all. Sei's my baby, and I'll never love another as Seijun Devon Yuumei.
I still own Sei and don't think I'll ever sell him. Ever.

He was my birthday gift, but I not only picked him out. I loaded the cart and pressed submit.

    20. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I have settled on a CP LUTS Yder because I fell for those..eyes. xD; At first, it was jumping around between Chiwoo, Shiwoo, Lu Wen, all those other guys. None of them had what I was really looking for: gentle eyes and a slight smile. Then I saw Yder and his profile picture. He looked like the kind of personality that was strong, straightforward and expectant, always looking ahead and never backing down, but not fierce or aggressive. Then Cupid became merciless and shot me hundreds upon thousands of times. -points at icon- xD
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I didn't really think that he SHOULD be my first, but instead I thought he IS GOING to be my first. I instantly knew when the possibility of getting him dawned on me. 'I have means of getting him.' led to 'I'm going to try to get him.' concluding at 'I am GOING TO HAVE HIM. No matter what.' These little thoughts evolved into weirder things. xD Now, my current thought is that:

I am going to have him by the end of my senior year of high school.

That leaves me with...eeeeehhh... >__>; About a year or so. I'm doing pretty well in saving since I recently jumped up from 12% savings to thirty something odd percent savings. I'm hoping for more commissions to complete my goal. Things look good!
      ---------------------

Yder will be my first and last complete doll. I can't afford another one but I am considering buying another head and just forcing the two to share a body. xD; I will never consider selling him and though the economy is starting to suck big time, Yder is actually changing my outlook on life and to me, his sentimental value is increasing. For something I don't even have (yet) to change my life, it means a lot to me! I'll never let go of something that changes my life. (Within reason.)

Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Of course! That's the beauty of variety! I don't think I'd ever be able to bring myself to ask someone to get one of these dolls for me! xD I hate asking for 5$ from my parents! And plus, the reward of hard-earned money makes it all the sweeter as a reward. c: <33

-flings two cents and a shilling into the fray-
