Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I had 2 characters in my head, that I had to decide between. I actually hoped that I could get the one called Gilbert first, but I still had some problems finding his perfect mold. I had alredy found a mold for the other character, William-Reuben, so I bought him first.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I had been in love with the Frey mold since I saw the little prewiew picture in a Luts newsletter.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not at all, I love William-Reuben :aheartbea
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll was a SDF Frey, and I still own him.

    2. My first bjd was a minifee Seorin active body boy. I have never ever regret that decision.

I don't really know how i decided how he would be the first, I just knew the first time I saw him. And the more I saw the pictures and looked on body posing pictures and read up on the doll I finely just had to have him. But I didn't thought I would get a msd boy as first one, but Seorin just stole my heart.

A month after the fairyland put him up, I ordered him, and never looked back. Loe the minifee A body to pieces!

I was able to choose him, even if he was a gift from a friend. And yes I still own him. I will never let him go.

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I knew I wanted a tiny, but didn't know which (there are so many!). I read up here for a few days and tried to find as many sites as I could by typing the doll names into Google. I wish there was a master list of doll companies organized by size lol, that would help sooo much for us newbies. Anyway I choose a Puki for my first because she was just so cute and the perfect size to befriend my MLP's.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Five minutes after I started reading the Puki discussion thread LOL

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Well I haven't received her yet, so I can't say 100%. She will be my first doll actually. Sometimes I feel I should have maybe gotten just my Brownie first (another doll I've ordered), but that's mostly because of the cost of having ordering both. My Puki will be here much sooner though (I bought her from a dealer) so that means a lot with her being my very first BJD.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      LOL not applicable? *stalks mailman*

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I wish it was a present! No one I know IRL has even heard of BJD's...

    4. Since I just recently got my first one, this is an easy one to talk about.

I got a Family Doll Pomelo because she's very, very sweet and was reasonably priced. However, she came without a faceup though I thought I had communicated I wanted one done.

      1. I knew she should be my first for the reasons stated above.
      2. I knew she should be my first when I looked around quite a bit and decided for the price and her cuteness, she would be the one.
      3. I am a little unhappy with my choice because of no faceup. It's hard to visualize what she will look like. And since I'm a newbie to this forum, I don't have marketplace access yet and don't know a lot of faceup artists. I'm hoping all that will change, though, once little "Cherub Cheeks" has her face on.

    5. Not hard at all. Shortly after I got into the doll hobby Luts released the MNF Shushu, who I decided would be perfect for my main original character if only she were an Elf.

Several months later they released her as an Elf.

I debated for all of an hour before I bought her. I asked a friend-- the owner who got me hooked on dolls-- if she thought I should do it and in almost the same breath told her I was doing it, no matter what anyone said. It was a good day. So yeah, I can't say I had much say in it. I knew I wanted her, needed to take the chance since it would be my only one, and I just... did it. I've never regretted the decision, and I know that regardless of what happens, even if I have to sell every other doll I own, her head is staying with me and I'll just have to buy her a new body later. I love her to pieces, and as much as I love my other dolls I don't think I could love any of them as much as Vana. I guess that answers if I was disappointed and if I still own her.

I got really lucky that she was so perfect, but I'm a careful doll buyer, I just buy them suddenly.

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I took forever. I originally wanted a Yder, then a DM Dean, then a SM namu, before I finally got my El head.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
About the time I saw the head on auction on ebay and was over come with the wants. <3

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I was and still am thrilled with my boy. I think the sculpts are so versatile and changeable that I'll never really get tired of them.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll is a CP EL on a soom boy body. I still own him <3.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
i got to choose him, and save up for four years to buy him. ^_^ Definitely not a present, although I'm certain if my parents could have, they would have helped out a lot.

    7. I chose a Volks Nono for my first doll! Because I wanted a jointed torso, but not an SD13 headmold, I decided to buy my first doll as optional parts and assemble her myself. I was actually planning to get a Mimi, since Nono heads weren't available as optional parts, but at the last minute I found someone with a Nono head that I traded for. It must have been fate, I daresay, 'cause I truly love Nonos. ;)

It wasn't too hard for me to decide what doll to get for my first, because at the time the only known company was Volks, and they hadn't even come out with boys yet (except maybe a couple LE's, I think?). So after deciding I wanted a big doll, with a more stylized look . . . well, it was relatively easy, lol. If I'd bought my first a bit later when CP was around, I probably would have picked a Dark Elf Soo instead 'cause I adore her cute face and elf ears. But I don't regret Nono as my first at all. Even if she did set me up for a long-time love of a rather difficult company (Volks).

    8. --How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

When I initially went looking --in the 2003 or so-- there weren't that many choices at all. Volks was all I could find and any other sites I stumbled upon weren't even close to having English translations. Frankly, I don't recall if Volks even had an English translation at the time. The first doll I wanted was absolutely out of the question --of course-- because she was a special edition (Sasha, I think the doll was called) and when I emailed an overseas buying service the gentleman quoted me $1500+ for her. I think I almost puked with both rage and firey disappointment. But I got over that rage and kept looking. It took me a while to get over the pricing of dollfie to be honest. But then I came across Nono and issues with price kind of went sailing. It was something about her eyes that captured me. I became a bit obsessed with her and compaired to $1500 her price was fairly reasonable. I was scared to death of handing money over to a buying service and found the only US website at the time sanctioned by Volks to resell their dolls (The Doll and Hobby Shop..which I don't think even offers ABJD's anymore). Nono (whom I later named Eden) arrived to me right after x-mas of 2003.

---Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one? Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

I don't think I was ever unhappy with Eden. She's my first and still very dear to me and I don't think I'll ever part with her... However, I did still continue to pine after that limited edition Sasha for some time because I really wanted a female that didn't look so classic anime. I love anime but I wanted a doll that had a more human/unique sculpt...Which influened all the dolls I would later purchase from doll companies other than Volks.

    9. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Well he kinda came to me. He was one of the first dolls I've seen and the one that made me look up what these dolls are. First I was content with just looking and didn't want a doll at all but after a while I ran out of new pictures to look at. I registered to DoA just to find some more pictures of the boy and soon after I found myself wanting the have him. It was a slow love, but a strong one^^

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

When I started to 'want' him I looked through every possible alternative. I went through gigglegeek numerous times, looked up all the companies I could find and tried to see which doll I would like better than him. I knew that I wanted a mature looking male and there weren't many choices around that time - all other boys seemed to look too young, too innocent, too grumpy, too happy, too...too anything compared to my chosen one. So after a while I gave up the search for alternatives and relized that he's really the one for me^^

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

No I didn't. Sometimes I wonder what yould have happened if I found this hobby later when bunches of mature boys are prancing around at the companies. Would I have found a doll I like better than him in my mad search? Would I have chosen a Soom MD instead? Would I have a totally different collection now? I'll never know^^ And seriously - I don't even want to know

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

He's a Dollshe Hound, and yes, I still have him^^

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

Haha, as said above - it was totally my choice based on a very thorough research^^

    10. I know what you mean I was quite nervous and unsure, trying to find something in my price range and something that I would like. Oh it was hard and then I thought is it safe to order for a site that's barely in english? Eeck!! The forums are really helpful but the more I looked...I just became more unsure with the different resins and the colors and sizes and costs. :D I did final order something, but it hasn't come so I don't know how I'll like it *I'm so worried about faceups...I don't know why I hope it's nice*

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well I like the store, it seemed secure and easy to order from Luts.com I bought in my price range which is nice, and the first one I thought was really cute.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
She was cute and I liked the pictures I'd seen around online of the mold.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I'm not real sure yet *she hasn't arrived yet* but I wish I had known you could ask for different faceups and different molds, I'll just wait and see.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I decided on an Aru, she's so cute.

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I looked around at just about every company, never seriously thinking that I would ever purchase a doll. I remember liking the D.O.T.s and even D.O.C.s quite a bit, esp. Carmine and Lahoo, but at the time, I figured not only would I probably feel a bit strange owning a male doll, but I'm very much in love with gal fashion...I just didn't see any girls at first that seemed particularly special. Then I stumbled across Dolkot Leaf Navy Ver. 2 on Dolkot's site, which was Korean only at the time. She was also limited edition, and priced at $1000 to be sold on auction...yet couldn't put her out of my head. She was just so beautiful and fantastic, I felt like having her in my home would be like sharing my life with a testament to heaven...

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
As soon as I saw her, no other doll has ever compared to her beauty, in my eyes. It was a lot of money, but I could be patient, and it gave me something to dream about at work all those weeks. Eventually, I was able to purchase her through Dollmore for about $700 after shipping and all, and she's been with me since.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
When I picked her out, it was a totally personal decision, probably one of the few that I've been so independent with. When she arrived I was a little scared that I'd simply been mesmerized by pictures--her faceup seemed somehow different in person. But I've never really regretted it. She has such an impish personality compared to the elegant stately images I was so used to. I sometimes consider purchasing another doll, but still feel like Lluvie is the quintessence of what I could ever hope for.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Dolkot Leaf, custom face up to mimic the Navy Ver. 02--I've had her almost 3 years now.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
No I chose her--but I often think it would be neat, if I got a second one, if that one was given as a present, since there is something really wonderful about having something beautiful chosen for you. I think I would still love such a doll unconditionally, like a child :)

    12. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I never really agonised over which would be my first doll. I was customising 1/6 Volks and Obitsu at the time and had very slowly started paying attention to the 'big resin guys,' casually haunting boards like DOA, admiring photos on deviant art etc when the very first teaser photos for Limhwa's Mano were released. The sculpt stunned me and I made the decision to start really looking into BJD because of him. And he eventually became my first :)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I couldn't stop going back to stare at the teaser photos of him and when, after having finally saved up enough for him, I realised that, yes, I still really wanted that gorgeous, giant expensve doll lol :)

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope, never. Emile is still my favorite, (shh-don't tell the others!). I feel like I have a lot of history with him at this point and I love him to pieces.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      Limhwa Mano and yes
      :)

    13. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Through hard search and long months

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When everyday I go on computer just to look at the doll. And when I wake up every morning think of her. :sweat

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that
      NOPE.

      you've ordered another one?
If i had the money, why not.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      Obitsu and yes :3

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
No, more like a: Buy it for me or all hell freeze over *smile* *glitter* *shine*

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I saw her, wanted her, bought her.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Because I wanted her more than the others.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, I'm glad I have her. I prefer her over some of the others.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      Imogene, Shoyo-2 (Dollzone) and yes.

    15. Just thought I'd jump in. :)

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
-I was looking around several sites and he just popped at me, (mine is Luts, kd-Hodoo)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
      - Pretty much as soon as I set my eyes on him.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
-Nope, I'm happy with him... :)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
-KD-Hodoo.. he's my only doll right now.. (other than Bory girl that actually belongs to my sister, except she's with me right now)

    16. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I looked and looked at different dolls, different companies, different styles. I considered what I wanted from the doll. For a while I'd thought a BBB Sprite would be nice.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I looked at the Fairyland site and saw the variety of Pukis, and thought they were cute as heck but so tiny. Then I saw the Littlefee and it was over, I knew what I wanted and who. Ante.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I love Briar, she's an adorable, pouty little princess. I plan to order another LF, but not out of disappointment. I want another LF because she is cute as hell and a second one would double the fun.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
White skin Little fee Ante, still have her, it's been 3 months and I adore her as much as the first day.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I was able to choose her, even though she was a present >.> I told my husband this is what I want for Valentines day, order her please. I don't often ask for something, let alone something that costs more than 50 dollars...

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well I search and surf through internet for a long time, but once I saw that boy, he's really charming and irresistible.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
As soon as I saw him.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Never. I'm very very very happy :)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Luts honey delf Muffin, and he's still with me.

    18. My first BJD(which is still my only one) was a MW junior Minoru girl and I accidently saw her on the DoA Marketplace and fell in love with her custom face up and size. I knew immediately that I had to have her :)

But my first doll ever, was a present from my sister as I had no hope of choosing which one to get (that was a pullip and I still have her).

    19. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Because my friend had an SD and I liked the size I soon decided mine should be an SD as well.
Firstly I was attracted to CP El, but after seeing owner pictures I was disappointed with how he looked. So I continued my searched, visited DOD's website, Volks website and eventually Iplehouse's. It was then that I saw Soo Ri and after seeing the owner pictures I knew that this was the one.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I think I kind of answered this one.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
For about a year I was very happy with him, although there were a few things bugging me. Soon after I received him I found out that I'm not really a White Skin- owner. I love WS, but not for my dolls. I also discovered that I was more fond of a waistjoint, whereas mine had a hipjoint.

When Elfdoll released the limited version of K, it didn't take long before I decided to replace my first doll with him (took me a while to get the K-SS head, though, it was already sold out)

Do I wish I hadn't ordered my Soo Ri? No. The first year I was very happy with him and I couldn't think of another doll that could be more perfect. Even though I replaced him, I have fond memories of that doll as he was the one who got me into the hobby.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Like I said, my first doll was an IH Soo Ri, and I replaced him for an Elfdoll K. My second doll was a CP Tanning Lishe and she too was replaced. By a Volks Madoka this time.

    20. I knew that I wanted a DIM Lloyd as soon as I saw him. The unfortunate was that I had to wait for a really long time before I was able to get him. But I preordered him as soon as I could. He ended up being the 2nd doll that arrived because of the loooong waiting period. He was the only doll at the time that made my heart melt in just the right way.
I ended up getting a B&G Sunny a little bit before he finally arrive. I still have both of them and I love them very much.

And yes, I picked both out, and have never regretted or second guessed my decision.
