Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

First, I researched all the existing companies at the time (there weren't many) and looked for sculpts that 'called out' to me. Then, I looked for owner pictures to check the posing capabilities, and the potential of the face. At that time, my final decision was the based on the posing capability of the doll.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Sometime around when I decided on the sculpt, Tensiya released their first batch of Tanned Hound IM. Seeing as it was limited to 5 at the time, I decided I should get it while I could. Sure, it wasn't the original face sculpt I decided on, but the body was more important to me.

But the moment I *knew* he was meant to be mine was when I actually tried to order him. It turned out that he'd sold out while I was getting my finances in line. Dejected and not expecting any reply, I posted a WTB on the marketplace... and found a local seller willing to let him go for close to his original selling price. It was Christmas day... and I picked him up the next day.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

I have no regrets. It's been nearly 4 years now, and I'm still as in love as I ever was. Possibly more, now that my faceup skills have gotten better and I can actually do his sculpt justice. I wouldn't trade him for the world. There simply hasn't ever been another doll that attracts me like he did.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

A Tensiya tanned Hound IM, Camui Asrun. Still here, not going anywhere anytime soon. :D

    2. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I wanted an inexpensive doll (mostly in case hated the hobby!), and truthfully the company's websites confused me at the time, so I did some looking at DDE. I initially liked the BBB Mei, but my impatience got the better of me and I ordered a Ju mostly because she was in stock and pretty. She was inexpensive, smaller, and very pretty.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I ordered her I guess?

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Yes and no. Not necessarily unhappy, but I realized after not too long that I was really a boy-doll person. So my first girl really doesn't get a lot of attention, and in fact I may be selling her soon. In retrospect I do wish I'd done some more research and waited longer before ordering her, just because I think I would have thought about it more and chosen better.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My BBB/RS Ju, and yes but I may be selling/trading her soon.

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Research, research, research. ...Research. I looked everywhere until I found a fairly affordable doll that was absolutely gorgeous (and what to my wondering eyes should appear....) XD

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Ummm... He was the only doll that I really wanted. A lot.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not one smidge. Almost two years later, though, I have swapped out his wig to something that fits his face so much better.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Derek is an Angel of Dream Wang Zi, and yes, I still have him and I'm still very much in love. ^w^

    4. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I concur - research. I followed link to link to link. It wasn't as time consuming as gathering information on home schooling, but intense enough! LOL! I knew I wanted an elf with a soft face and pale skin tone so I used that as my guide to narrow down my search.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
While technically I will be getting another doll first, that doll will be more of an experimental doll to practice faceups (although I'm sure she will end up with a persona all her own). The doll I chose first I am still saving up for and won't have for a few months, but when I saw her, well - I just knew. No matter what dealer website I went to, I was always drawn to her. As lovely as the other dolls were, none touched me the way she did.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
The doll I chose is BBB Mei and I can't wait to have her home!

    5. It was pretty hard because i wanted a MSD one(it's my first bjd) and i wanted also him to have something interesting and different from the others... I don't know. I wanted many things from him, unfortunately like nobody's perfect, he isn't either, so i guess he's ok:) at least for me.

    6. I resisted the urge to buy a bjd for many months. I've been a fashion doll girl for a while and recently found and subscribe to a fashion doll mag. Even after I attended my first doll show and saw bjds in person, I resisted. But each month, the new issue arrived with all the pretty photos and articles about bjds, so I would go to the computer and check out websites. And found far, far too many pretty dollies. Price was a deciding factor so that I could get her sooner.
I kept going back to her. I love Rose's face 'cuz it's a bit smirky, like me. ;-D

Oh, I hope not to be unhappy....I'm still waiting for her. I don't imagine being unhappy because I've been checking out all the wonderful photos here at DoA and every time I run across her model, I'm happy with my choice.

B&G Rin/girl and I'm still waiting for her to arrive, so, I guess, I don't own her yet!
She is a gift to myself so I got to choose her.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I stumbled upon Luts' site back on '06 and fell in love with CP designs (probably because I own a few of their little plastic figures). There was something about SOO Dark (DES?) that reminded me of Sailor moon's facial structure. Although I didn't like how the doll looked on their site, I decided to photoshop the makeup to how I wanted it and I fell in love with my photoshop creation.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I think the first question covered this.. =D

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I was really afraid that Luts would get the custom faceup wrong since they never seemed to do 'dark, unnatural' faceups then. But when I opened her up... they got her down to a T, the black eyeliner, the purple eyeshadow, the pale purple lips.. I was very happy. The only thing I was disappointed with was that her skin color was yellowish.. I didn't know exactly what 'Beauty White' meant... and kind of was hoping for something a lot more white. =/

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Haha, I keep jumping ahead with my answers here... UMMS, She's a Delf Soo Dark Human. I still own her.. =]
Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I wish she were a present.. lol. I got her though..

    8. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I looked trough every doll company sites I could find, making a list of those I liked, and choosing the ones I wanted. I chose AS Lucifer for the one I wanted first, but that did mot really happen xD

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I did not really have a reason... I just wanted to have it first =P

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Well... I do wish I had bought it! Now I still want to have it, but I keep getting others!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first if Meredith, a Juri 07 head on a Fdoll body, I do not really think of ever getting rid of him =P
He was actually supposed to be a practise head... but the moment I saw him in the MP I wanted him and now he is the reason I cannot seem to be able to get the one I really wanted XD

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
At that moment, I was able to choose. My second doll was a present too. But now that I want a third, I cannot seem to find which one it will be!! I want the Lucifer (Its become my dream doll XD) and so~ many others! I keep changing ideas.... My friends find it funny and confusing xP

    9. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I browsed a bunch of websites and fell in love at first sight with DZ Megi.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
It was a combo of me loving him so much and him being a good price.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I was terribly unhappy that I waited like half a year to get him, and when I saw his face up it's so horribly red... I still haven't fixed that but I'm, working on it.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
DZ Megi, yup but I'm considering selling him... I dunno...

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I chose him and ordered him but it was paid for as a "present"

    10. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Browsed around many doll companies' websites, made a note of the sculpts I liked, checked DoA for owner pics. The face sculpts was the most important factor for me, followed by posing.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I saw her, and my sister approved as well.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope. I love my girl. But I do wish that I have money to afford all those on my wishlist.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
LUTS SDF Magical Moon Fia. Yep, definitely!

Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I saved for my first on my own, so it wasn't a present. My next doll is going to be a present from my parents, but I got to choose her. I'll prefer people to not buy me a gift doll without allowing me to choose its sculpt, in case I really dislike it or something.

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Actually its a pretty funny story how i decided on my dollie.
It all started with i came across a beautiful picture of Soom Sabik on the internet, and i began searching around for where he really came from. At that point i found soom's website and as i found sabik, who i at that point was totally in love with, i also caught sight of rex, who strangely enough caught my attention far more than the sabik had done, and on that road it is basically :p

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Actually it was completely clear from the start. As soon as i decided that i was gonna get a doll, it was no question on which one i wanted.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No. Ofc at some point i was slightly unsure, which i guess almost everyone is at some point. Its a lot of money, and takes time to get a doll shiped from across the world, but when i finally got him, just in time for christmas, i knew that i had made the right choice.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first and only doll was/is a Soom MA Rex and yes he's sitting beside me as i write ^^

Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, it was my choice all the way and i payed for him with my own money wich makes him the more special.

    12. It wasn't very hard for me really. I knew that Crobidoll Yeon-Ho would be my first when I saw a picture of his sculpt on DA. His pouty face was perfect and I fell in love with his little nose (hahaha). Since I was so new to BJD, It was hard to put the head with the body. I ended up only buying the head first and then a few months later after intense searching, I bought the body.

I'm extremely happy with my choice and wouldn't trade my Yoh for anything! I do wish I spent a little more on the body (the DIM Minimee body I got is great, but it kind of damages easy on the joints) but bodies are easy to change.

So Yoh, my Yeon-Ho is still with me a whole 8 months later. I don't see myself getting rid of him...ever. He's getting a brother next year (Crobidoll Ys) and hopefully they'll get along okay ^___^

And no, he wasn't a present. I saved up for him all by myself. But my Ys will most likely be purchased with support of Christmas money. hehehe

    13. I haven't gotten my first dolly yet, so I can't answer all the questions [hit me up sometime after my last layaway payment in February], but some I certainly can!

I am not an impulsive person by nature. I plan, plot, plot, throw the original plans and plots away and start over. And then repeat. I have been registered on DoA for almost a year now, and I have been looking into BJDs now for about eighteen months, and I only finally settled on my first sculpt a few days ago. When I realised how perfect Fairyland's Ante was, as an image of a character I've had in my head for awhile now.

      >.> Of course, then I had to debate LittleFee and PukiFee, but that's another story.

I knew she was mine when I looked at her, and said 'OMG THAT'S ODETTE'. And I knew. So, while I can't answer as to whether or not I'm happy with my choice, I know that I'm excited about making her mine.

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, I knew I wanted a doll 2 years before I ended up getting one. I originally tried to order a dollzone Mo sculpt, but ended up being scammed. So two years later after almost forgetting about BJD's alltogether I began researching again, I have my Kid delf Bory boy named Dobry! ^_^
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

The second I saw the sculpt. I fell in love and kept squealing 'he is SOOO PRETTY'
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Actually, before he arrived I began to regret it a bit, but once he arrived i was absolutely thrilled and I love him to bits.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My Kid delf Boy Bory and yes I do still have him!! and love him a much as ever!

    15. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I just go around looking for the doll that looks more or exactly like my OC. Though it was a very tiring way to find your first doll. But it's worth the effort I put in because I found my very first doll in Iplehouse! ^^

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The moment I found him! :) Because I already know that I wanted my OC to come home first.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
NOPE. Never! Totally satisfied with my choice.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
An Iplehouse Mars is my very first BJD and of course I still own him. I just got him for only 11 days XD No matter what happens, I will NEVER sell him off.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Not a present and I was able to choose ^^

    16. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The first doll I saw, the one that got me into this hobby was an obitsu gretel. For months I was positive that she was the doll for me, but after looking around I became less sure. In the end there was 3 dolls on my list I wanted to be my first, I kept switching between them. In the end it became clear that none of them except the obitsu gretel fitted the charature I was building in my head. So thats how and when I knew she is deffinately my first :fangirl:

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Well I've only just ordered Gretel, so only time will tell. But I'm pretty sure I've made the right choice, I'll get the other dolls on my list when I've saved up :)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Obitsu gretel is my first, shes not even here yet, but I will own her forever :aheartbea

    17. the first doll I ordered for myself is a kdf ani girl from luts, I had switched to her from a kdf aru who was also very sweet, but the ani mold simply was much more pouty, and I just love that. I've had her for a little over a year now, and sh's still my favourite. I have a puki and an sd as well, but Rakxa (the kdf) is my darling.

    18. I spent so long looking, and I just never found one that stuck out. I was new to the site, and I desperately wanted to find a doll I wanted, but nothing came up for about 3 months of combing through the doll company thread a few times a day. I had a few ideas- I was originally shooting for an AR Nell, and although I'd still get her, she seemed too expensive and still, the 'feeling' wasn't there.

Then, I was looking around on the Jpopdolls site, when I noticed they had a brand of dolls I hadn't seen before, Islanddoll. I popped it open just to check- and there she was.

I don't really remember what attracted me to her so much. To be honest, she doesn't even have many of the features I was looking for! She isn't smiling and her eyes are pretty small....a few months later I found Bluefairy Sarang, who I'm sure would be the one if I hadn't seen Amy first, but she can come later. Amy's mold just has something about her, that look on her face, like she's looking over you and at something way far off in the distance...I don't know. It just felt like 'Ah, theeeere you are', after so long of wading through dolls who really made no mark on me at all.

I don't really know where the name Enid came from either. I was just searching through names and it popped up, and somehow that was just right too. Ahh, fate. I loves it.

    19. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
At first I'm interested in D.O.I.(especially Crush), but later decided that MSD should be more suitable. I kept on browsing until found Luts with many lovely kids, and suddenly fell for Hodoo boy.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Absolutely, at the first time I saw him.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, never. Until now he is still my first choice.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
      Luts KDF Hodoo boy.

    20. (I have a tiny, Colette but I don't consider her as counting because I have other OT dolls her size so I'm going to go by 1st SD cause I've never seen one in person before)

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I saw the Cuprit sculpt and got very into SOOM. The more I looked at Soom dolls the more I decided I wanted one. Cuprit has the best head sculpt I've ever seen, so I looked at other dolls owners pictures and the offical website and started checking out market place prices.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
After I realized that I could buy a SOOM MD secondhand. Before I'd just been gazing at SOOM and would have most likely bought a PeaksWoods Goldie.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I don't think so. but I wish I had gotten a full doll instead of starting with hooves, then finding the head, etc. (Just would have been eaiser)
