Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, it just felt right to me that Pestilence should have been my first doll. She is and always has been the "baby" of my characters, so it just seemed right that she should be the one to be turned into doll form first :)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The moment I saw her, it was love at first sight. Of course, this was after much deliberation, and viewing thousands of other dolls that just didn't look quite right for the look I was going for.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Absolutely not. I am 100% happy with the doll that I have. She may have imperfections, such as seam lines and a rough head cap, but she has the perfect face/wig/outfit/body for the character she was modeled after.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
The first doll that I received was a gift from my aunt, and I most certainly do still own her :) She was bought from Dollcatch and her model is Elysia, but her name is Pestilence. She is one of my most precious possessions, and if anything happened to her I think I would be pretty heartbroken :(

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Well, she was a gift, but I did get to choose her :)

    2. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, I wasn't smart about it. I decided that I wanted a doll but couldn't justify spending a whopping amount of cash on something I had never even been exposed to in real life. I narrowed down to three companies, B&G, AOD and Bobobie, because those where the ones that I knew where cheapest. The one I REALLY wanted was a CP Luwen, but I knew I would never be able to buy something that expensive. In the end, I decided I didn't like Bobobie, I didn't want a 60cm for my first doll (and B&G was a little more expensive), so I chose AOD. I didn't really like any of the molds but I chose the Chi, in hopes that I could give him a fabulous faceup and make him just as pretty as more expensive dolls.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
It was just kind of a process of elimination. It wasn't a "LE GASP" sort of moment.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Yes. It didn't take me long to realize that a) I wasn't a master faceup artist right out of the chute and b) Cam was just not as pretty as I wanted him to be. He didn't have the aesthetic that I found pleasing, and the fact that I didn't buy any clothes/wigs/eyes for him (and still haven't, to this day) made him shabby and a poor first experience. Bottom line: should have gone with what I wanted in the first place, even if it meant waiting to save up. I now own that Luwen and I like him MUCH better than my Chi.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll was an AOD Chi, and out of sheer stubbornness, yes. While I want to sell him because he doesn't fit in my family, he WAS my first, and I get silly about attachment. He's still my project and is the only doll that I sew for, so I guess he's good for that. He's also my guinea pig. HOWEVER, had I known then what I know now, I would have gone with something completely different.

    3. Thx for the info! I think I want one for the customization...I'm big into character design and concepts like that. I also think I would enjoy taking poictures though so posing is necessary. I'm currently deciding between a fairyland minifee ruth, a doll of dreams DOC kirill, a something Ryan (sorry i forget the company haha) or a doll form Bobobie or Doll family. My favorite is the Ruth but he is also the most expensive.

    4. To be honest, I didn't (still don't) have much money starting into dolls so I was basing my choice on how much they cost. I found a Bobobie that I liked, forget the mold now, and was telling my doll friend about it. She told me to try another company as Bobobies are kinda hard to pose, and I'd be using it to cosplay a game. So I started looking around more and found Fairyland dolls :) I really wanted to get one, but they were out of my range. Anyway, I met up with another friend who allowed me to borrow one of her dolls to get used to posing and care, as well as starting on some outfits. When she told me it was for sale it was a no brainer, I was buying her, and guess what. My first doll was a Bobobie! I now own 2 Bobobies and have a Puki on the way:) First doll just what I wanted, and I still have her.

    5. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I was, and still am, fairly new to dolls. So I had my best friend help me out. She gave me major doll sites, Souldoll, Leekeworld, etc. And I wanted almost every doll. But I was a waitress and most of these dolls are way out of the Texas waitress budget. (3.13 an hour, and I worked at a dying restaurant). So I found a very nice Resinsoul doll, cheap and in my budget, plus it was just a beautiful doll! She looked plain and heavenly which is what I was going for.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I was looking around at DDE, when I spotted her. It's was kind of like a 'love at first sight' kind of thing. And it really helped that she was the exact look I was going for.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No I really don't, Zoey is a great doll to start off with, she really introduced me to the doll world. And I love her! ")

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Lan model Resinsoul, and yes I still own her! ")

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes I was able to choose her, no she was not a present, I had to save up a lot of my money to purchase her. And I'm glad I did.

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Well, I'm new to all of this, so the first things I thought about were price and durability, as I...well, tend to be a little bit clumsy. I did pay some attention to sculpts, as I was trying to build a doll that represents an important reoccuring character of mine, but it was certainly secondary to the other two factors. I ended up deciding that I would go with an Obitsu so I could get used to the mechanics of simply having one (carrying it and whatnot) before I moved onto resin, which...It's good I didn't go with first because I dropped Max so much when I first got him. ^^; However, once I narrowed it down to Obitsu it was all looks, and didn't take long at all.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

When I kept going back to the site simply to look at the blank doll. I had to admit to myself that it was the one and get purchasing. XD

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

Nope! The Sheba head is perfect for this character. I smile just looking at my Max. XD There's that, and...well, like above, I just kept dropping him. ^^; As a vinyl doll, however, he simply bounced, which I doubt a resin doll would have done on our concrete floor. I would have broken the poor thing! Even if I've had him for a short time, though, I've learned to manage a 60cm nicely, which is good for when I actually buy a resin-based doll.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

An Obitsu 60cm hybrid. (Simply meaning that he's really a 55cm boy with girl legs. ^^; ) I chose the Sheba head, and yes, I still own him. I just got him not too long ago, of course, but I don't plan to ever sell him as he is a representation of a fairly old and important character of mine.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

Well, when I first got into the hobby eariler this year, I knew I wanted to base my first couple of dolls on Star Trek and for my first one, I wanted Spock. So I basically went searching for a doll that was cheap and looks like Spock. My friend Sirius53black, suggest the RS Mai mold and I fell in love with him.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

As soon as I saw him. I wanted Spock first, like I said, and his price was pretty decent for someone just starting into this hobby.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

Yes and no. I love Spock and I'm very happy with him. My only regret is that he's single-jointed but RS should hopefully be putting a DJ boy body out soon and I'll just have to get him a new one.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Resinsoul Mai was my first and he's currently sitting on my dolly shelf cleaning his violin :)

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

I think he sorta choose me. Sirius53Black was the one to find him, though I did have the finally say. So I guess I choose him and he choose me :)

    8. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I paged through Junkyspot for weeks, comparing different dolls. Finally, I was like "Fei is the prettiest one for his price, lets give it a go!" and then I bought him.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Nearly the second I saw him, but of course, I had to look at all the other ones on the site to make sure I didn't miss anything!!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Heck no! I've loved this boy since the moment I got him (I didn't think he'd arrive on my birthday, but he did!). Even when he was naked, hairless, and faceupless, I thought he was amazing.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

Dollzone Fei. I still own him, but unfortunately I need to sell him (moving into a new apartment that kind of screwed me over on the deposit...). It's going to kill me having to take him to the post office...

If I had things my way, though, my first doll would have been Dream of Doll Camine.

    9. I honestly haven't gotten my first yet, still saving up for him but I do have my dream doll in mind.
He is going to be 765 dollars but personally in my opinion he'll be worth every penny.
We can thank my girlfriend for getting me into Dollfies to begin with.
She has let me tend her doll and I am in the process of making it clothing and trying to find a
person to do his face-up but ever sense I started taking care of the Model I've been wanting my own.

    10. I thought it was so hard to choose, especially browsing in every different company. For me it's like a love at the first sight.
My very first doll was a ResinSoul MEI. Her gentle face haunts me for few months. I was broken hearted when the Bobobie stops accepting orders since Christmas was getting close. I didnt know before that they have a sister company the RS. So i just ended up just dreaming of having her and visiting the Bobobie site once in awhile. But one day i ended up seeing her in Featherfall bjd and i was so happy, that i could get her there.
And also, I already had name for her even before i had decided that i wanted to buy her.

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I was planning first on buying just the body and wait a lot, like years and years after to buy a suitable head. But a couple of weeks after I bought the body I saw the new -at the moments- heads for Dollzone line and I fell instantly in love with Floy. So I guess I decided only based in my particular taste of aestheticism, I couldn't remember another BJD as beautiful as Floy at the moment -still hadn't XD-.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I was saving money in that moment to buy the head another time, but a friend of mine told me that since I just bought the body and I did had the money to I should just bough the head already... It was a little hard for her to convince me though, I didn't wanted to spend so much money on a doll in just one go, but I'm glad she could convince me in the end ^^.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not even once I regreted buying Antheas. He is really the perfect doll for me. I know there are a lot better and spensive, but I can't admit any other to be as beautiful as mine!!! I know I'm just a happy owner talking, but I don't care, one has to love their dolls you know? ^^!!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Antheas is a DZ 1/3 Floy hybrid and I'm still pretty much her slave ^^U,... and I think I forever will be!

    12. I don't have my first doll yet, but it took a while before I finally decided on the particular sculpt I'm getting. I ended up changing my mind several times, going from Luts to DoD to Iplehouse to Dollzone. I finally decided on my doll when I realized (cause I'm very dense) that every time I tried to decide on a sculpt, I kept going back to look at him.

    13. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
My friend, Cinfelix and I had been interested in BJDs for a couple of years before either of us got our first doll, they were always in the 'too expensive' basket for us two girls without jobs. But then I can't remember exactly how, but Cinnie got her first, a little Puki from Fairyland, she wasn't too expensive, not too big, and she came with the whole set, eyes, wig, a set of clothes, everything you need to get started. Anyways, later she got this amazing AAYi doll that I thought was amazing. I could never find any dolls I liked enough to buy on my own, but Cin always had excellent taste and I basically wanted all the same makes as her. xD But I felt like I couldn't do that, it felt like I was just copying her and didn't realise heaps of people had the same types as others. Then recently, Cinnie decided to sell her AAYi and I jumped at the chance to buy him, buying him even before he was properly for sale. :D And the moneys not so much of a problem now because I have a job, finally!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I adored him from the sidelines as I watched my friend's ownership of him by her words and photos she put of him on the internet. I wanted one just like him from the moment... he got his first bought set of eyes. xD His first eyes that were set out with him freaked me out, lol! Then I knew for sure when she posted that he was going to be for sale over at deviantART.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Well I haven't received him yet so I can't really say. I guess he's a kinda difficult doll to start with, as I impulsively bought him and hadn't planned on buying a doll until I was out of high school at the end of the year, I don't really know much about how to take care of him, or use him, and yet the first thing I will need to do with him is restring him. :sweat

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first will be an Abio Angel Yi. :3 I'm waiting to recieve him, now. :aheartbea

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
In a way, I choose him, in a way, I didn't. It was my decision alone to buy him, but I hadn't really looked around at other dolls to compare or anything like that. Not that that really bothers me, I can't wait to get him! :aheartbea

    14. Picking a doll wasnt hard for me. It was hard for my wallet.
I was walking around the volks store and I knew it was going to be an expensive day lol

    15. It was pretty hard, since the first BJD I wanted was over 1500$, it was a large amount of money to spent; Especially at that time I was only a university student, no stable income, my only side job was being a mediator(proxy) to help people get stuff thats not in the country. But maan, after she arrived, I felt the money was well spend.
But even now, I still feel that this is a expensive hobby... haha, my total spending on it its well over 10k... =(

    16. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Although I wanted a different doll for my first one, I realized I could create one of my favorite RP/fiction characters Aster from a Bobobie Elfkin much more affordably, so thus the lil' guy was born.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I realized I could afford him within a month.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I luvs him, though I wish his faceup had been done lighter like I've seen in pics... it came out very dark, and he's an albino. Oh wells. He is quite happy to be my very first BJD, and I'm just as happy to have him. ^_^

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Aster, and yes, he's only been around a few months, and he's not going anywhere. XD

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I bought him, and his eyes and wig and... etc etc. xD

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Well, I was fond of Tonner dolls at that moment but wanted to switch to BIDs. That is why I was looking for a BJD with the face that reminded me Shauna sculpt of by Tonner. And I found Deneb. I liked and was ready to buy her, but as she's a MD and it wasn't her turn I had a month to wait for order period opening and searching other sites. And suddenly I bumped into JID Tania and Tatiana by Iplehouse. I have to say that I have never ever thought of buying MSDs since they are children and I prefer ladies. But I couldn't resist as I fell in love with both of them and couldn't choose between them. So I bought both of them. :)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Mmmm, it was love at first sight, so I decided to buy them instead of buying Deneb almost immediately.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, never. I liked everything in them, they were even better than on the promo pics.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Unfortunately no. I decided to get rid of them as their skintone was changing from natural to white. But now after almost 3 years of being in this hobby I realise that it is the most stupid reason to get rid of a doll you own. So I'm saving for Tatiana and going to buy one again ASAP.

    18. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I had been looking at sooo many dolls the past few months, debating on what size to get, from what site...But I kept coming back to her, so thats who I chose!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope I'm not unhappy. I'm a bit disappointed because she's really tightly strung but I'll be able to fix that! I know that I would eventually have gotten her anyway, so I'm not disappointed at all.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Souldoll Yoni-P, and yep, of course I still have her, she's really new!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
      Nope she was my decision

    19. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I had an original character picked out before I went looking for what doll I wanted. I wanted a (Slim) MSD size because, the other sizes seemed too big or too small for me, but the doll had to be a mature looking MSD to fit the 26 year-old character. I knew I wanted a doll from Resinsoul because they have great service and I wanted a good first buying experience.
So after all that criteria, I still had to find the actual doll.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I actually was debating between two other molds before I ened up with an RS Rong. This was because Rong hadn't come out with and I just felt that both of the two molds I was thinking about were not quite right..
Then RS Rong came out and I ordered it that day. She was perfect, goofy ears and all. I was in love.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, not at all. I think she's beautiful. I went several months with her not even having the right wig (because it was taking forever to be made) and I was still happy. Every step she took to becoming the character I intended made me love her more. Now she's just gorgeous.
I don't really believe in 'doll bonding,' however. If I spend money on something, I will myself to like it.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
She is Lettice, my RS Rong. I do still own her and I'm not going to sell her either.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
She was a present to myself.... My tax refund money.. I did choose her all on my own.

    20. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I looked at a few different websites. I ended up with an Iplehouse YID Mars. I got him because he looks so nice and sweet and cute!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I didn't know. My mom asked me about him and what I would want, and I told her. Then she ordered him without telling me, for Christmas. It was the best surprise ever!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Never! I am 100% completely happy with him. He's beautiful!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My Iplehouse Mars. Yes, I still own him. I haven't even had him for a year yet.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
It was a present, but I was able to choose him. I just didn't know I was getting him until Christmas Day.
