Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I saw pictures of Lati Yellows on flickr and wondered about the company that makes such strange dolls (I was only used to plastic/fashion dolls before ^^). I had a look on Lati's website and they just had an event for 2008 Christmas Angel dolls. I checked the different dolls and Angel Lumi instantly caught my eye. And her price... never saw a doll this expensive before! I learned that they were made from resin and I registered on DoA and learned a lot about BJDs.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
It was not a decision of first or second or third. I could only afford this one doll. One look into her eyes and at her beautiful face and her elf ears completely knocked out my brain. I HAD to get her, no matter what. I wanted no other BJD, just her ^^. At this time I knew little about the other beautiful sculpts on the market.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Hm, good question. I was in love when I got her, but soon afterwards I discovered that BJDs can also come in white skin color and this literally formed an obsession ^^. Lumi was perfect in ALL ways but she was not WS.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Lati 2008 Limited Christmas Angel Lumi - I have sold Lumi some time ago, because she didn't fit in my WS family anymore. BUT I have re-bought her recently: a Lati Christmas elf Lumi! She is exactly the same sculpt including the cute elf ears, but in WS whereas my first Lumi was NS. I have waited 2.5 years for Lati to finally release a WS elf Lumi ^^.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I chose her, or better she chose me. I just HAD to order her ^^.

    2. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I didn't decide that. I never choose my dolls, it's the dolls that choose me. If they have that little extra thing that makes me think of a personality/backstory when I see the doll, it's for me. If it's just "Aw, he/she is simply gorgeous!", then it's nothing, but if I think "Hmm, this guy look EXACTLY like he'd an X guy and has been through Y and bla bla bla" - that is MY sign that this is just the right doll for me.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
... When I first saw her?

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

Not at all! She only gets prettier and prettier every time I look at her. Really! The only thing about her that irks me is that she is way too losely strung, but I'm working on it! I have read good advice threads about this subject, and I'm quite sure I can fix this with some training and friends that help me out!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
She is an Iplehouse Gentle Freezia, and yes, I still own her of course! :fangirl:

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

I spent a couple years going back and forth on deciding which to get. The very, very first doll I had wanted was a BF Patrick. After jumping from one company's dolls to the next, and sometimes back, I ended up getting a BF Olive. :) Not very far from the mark, and I'm absolutely content with him.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

      I found myself constantly looking at the Bluefairy website and pictures of other peoples' Olive dolls, even when I was trying to save up for a doll that I changed my mind with prior. ^^;

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

Nope. I am very happy with him. :)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

My first doll is the only doll I have today, a BF Olive boy.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

He wasn't a present, and I chose him.

    4. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I just got into BJDs two months ago ;;;;XD And I got into the hobby FAST. On the first evening of browsing through sites selling BJDs, I thought I'd found The Doll For Me, Kid Delf Bory boy... :p But when I got my dad's permission to buy one, I'd already gotten a little bored of him, and realized there were at least ten of him on the Finnish BJD forum already... So, there was Lily.C, who had felt special the first time I saw her, and seems to be really rare, so I went for her, just following the moment's flow.
They were both ones I knew I could invent stories for, and Lily.C was the tougher one, but there was no doubt she'd become someone. Most dolls I adore, but there are very few who seem like they hold a story for me, and I go for those. (I have four dolls I've decided to buy later.)
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Actually, only when I realized I could get one and thought, Gee, Bory's not unusual... Well, she is ^w^
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Well, I don't even have her yet... -.- But I don't regret choosing her the tiniest bit. I don't think I ever will. She's special >u<
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
See above. I don't think I'll ever be able to sell her away, but time will show.

    5. I looked for my first doll, Soom Beyla, for over a year. I just fell in love with her design and knew she was for me. :) I was ecstatic when I found her and I love her dearly.

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
To be honest it took me an extremely long time to pick my first doll. I did some research, joined this site, but spent most of my time fawning over different dolly websites. Don't really like to admit it, but heck being a poor college student did play a big factor on what I was willing to spend on my first doll.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Her serious face was what got me and the hoofed legs were interesting! I thought about how cool it would be to have a fantasy character.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

After looking back and reflecting on it I was unhappy with my choice. There was nothing wrong with her of course, but when she arrived I had a hard time bonding with her. Picking a fantasy doll for my first turned out to not fit me very well and later I learned that I loved msd's more than sd's. =)
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll was a Resin Soul Ai, and because of the bonding issue I sold her to where she would be loved. Her legs were so cool though! XD Oh well.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Quite frankly, my first choice was a tiny doll. I wanted a LatiYellow Lami really bad. But I wasn't comfortable with ordering from them because I heard from many Lati Doll owners that shipment could take forever. I'm not a patient person by nature, so I decided that I needed to shop around more for a company that took the least possible time.

I've been window shopping two years now. I ordered an off topic doll to get a fell of "is this size for me" and became certain that I was definitely an MSD and under sort of lover. And then I saw a tan Limhwa half elf and that was it. I was like, "I must have this doll." Needless to say I investigated and was excited but unfortunately there is that problem with Dollfair so I was unable to order my Limhwa.

I became very discouraged because it seemed that every time I set my heart on a doll -- something happened. My friend got a Supia Rosy and in curiosity to see what Rosy looked like, I did a search. Falling in love happened again. I originally liked Roda from Supia but Rosy just won my heart. Just as I was about to put my order for layaway, I realized the old body was single joint [I like double joints] and that I didn't particularly like the new body.

So -- in summary, I have decided on Rosy because she is beautiful, versatile, and fits the purpose that I have in mind. These extra complications with the body have only cemented the fact that I must really love her if I am going through all this trouble and wait finding out about resin matches and alternatives. If I didn't love her this much, I would have moved on to an Elfdoll Soah, or something.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I thought further about WHY I wanted a doll in the first place. While tiny dolls are super cute and completely my cup of tea -- there's a specific purpose I wanted a BJD for and unfortunately small dolls couldn't fit the bill.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

I am happy with my choice. I haven't ordered her yet, but I do suspect that she will be with me for as long as I last. I'm kind of not the seller type [unless I truly needed the money for something critical -- like health reasons, etc.]

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I am able to choose it... and that might be the problem. *laughs* I'm so picky about things that I can't just say, "Whatever -- ordering her with new body even if I don't like it." Tsk. The "must have everything custom to my taste" thing really kills me sometimes.

    8. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? Surprisingly, my first doll was gonna be a girl. (Technically she was, but she's not a bjd.) I came across Daniel's mold by mistake, and laughed at it; it was so weird looking and ugly, honestly, lol. But as I kept looking at it over a few weeks, kept coming back to that mold, I eventually just sort of fell for him~

And when did you know that this doll should be your first? He's my first and only, so when I realized I had to have him, I REALIZED it. I had been saving for a Dollzone Aleister, but he ran out of stock, and I just loved Daniel.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope. I lub him. ^_^ I wish he wasn't so expensive, and I wish I could get another one, but, he'll do for now, until I become FILTHY STINKING RICH!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
See above. And yep, he's still mah baby boy.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
LOL, I don't get presents this expensive. No, I picked him out, saved for him, and ordered him.

    9. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I was actually procrastinating and avoiding study when i came across Resinsoul. I fell in love with their Feng sculpt because he was perfect for one of my characters.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Almost as soon as i saw him, but i thought it would take a while. Then i found a dealer in my country which cut down my shipping costs and made paying easy so i got him after a bit of saving.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No. Even though i jumped straight into the deep end of the hobby with a 70cm for my first i have absolutely no regrets. I love my first boy and wouldn't swap him for anything else.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Fenton my RS Fen was my first and i still have him. he's a little over 12 months old and i still love him just as much as the moment i opened him.

    10. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?-i brought my first doll from HappyHouse and his name is Nangong. Originally i was going to get Apollo from Bobobie website and it took me over a month to decide which im going to get.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?- i guess i felt i must to have him because he is limited
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?-i love the doll but the artist kinda mess up one of his finger but im ok with.
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?-yeah i choose Nangong because i felt i always can get other dolls but i must have Nangong first.

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I always wanted a doll from lati, but the waiting time of the website was just too long.
Then I received some extra money for a job and a friend was selling her lati green and... I got it! :D
      It was perfect timing.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I looked at my friend's pictures of the doll when she decides do sell it and it was love at first sight.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
No, no and no. My first BJD is like a baby to me. I love her so much.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
She is a lati green coco, and yes, she is still with me.

    12. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I researched/searched a LOT. Since I started liking them until I actually got one, it was like...several years, and new ones come out all the time, so I was always on the look-out for the "perfect" mold.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Mmm...I kind of didn't, but it was the christmas event and he was coming with clothes and he had double joints and stuff...so it was kind of like, now or a year from now. Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
After I made the order and he was being sent and such, I worried a lot I wouldn't like him...and to be honest I still worry if he was the right mold for my character, but I don't think I would get rid of him, I would just make him a different character if I find a better mold.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I only have one doll and I still have him :> He is a SoulDoll Doubleboy Yurr <3

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Pffft yes. I bought him with my own money! I worked so hard ~

    13. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I'd Loved BJDs For Quite a while but i never got to interact with them, so to speak, other than and Anime Conventions. Then At One In January I passed by a booth selling dollies. I walked by it, looked around, left, and repeated this for several hours. Then during one of my 'rounds' i saw HIM. I instantly Feel in love<3 He was soo cute and I Seriously love elfs. he was perfect! I Knew Then And There I was Leaving With Him.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Of all The other Options I was Drawn Back To Him Everytime. :D

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Never! I Love My Baby<3 I'm Super happy With Him.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
He Is A ResinSoul Bao And I Still Vary Happily Own Him:D

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I looked at different companies to work out which sculpts were potential candidates for the character I had in mind. I particularly focused on Volks, as I like their dolls and was about to spend a year living in Japan, presenting me with the opportunity to use their FCS service.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I saw it and decided that it was the right sculpt. I intended right from the start to use the doll for a specific character, and it was just a matter of finding the right one.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not at all. There have been limited dolls since then that I've been unable to afford that I might have bought had I not spent the money on another doll, but I'm happy with him.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My Volks SD13 F-17 boy, and I still own him.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, I chose. Nobody I know would buy a doll for me!

    15. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

A good friend of mine got me into the BJD hobby, and she recommended I look into the Bobobie dolls on sale at Denverdoll. They were a very reasonable price, and after looking for just a little while, I found the girl I wanted. I didn't know much about the other companies at the time, so with my limited knowledge (and therefore selection), picking out only one was easy!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I spotted her and thought she might be the right mold. I immediately liked her once I saw some user photos. :)

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

I only have my one girl at the moment (it's been about 5 months), but I feel as if I'm falling more and more in love with her every day! Hoping to get another doll on the way to keep her company.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

My doll was a present from my mum, but I was able to pick her out myself. Mum knows how much of a detail freak I am, and that I will do the research to make sure I'm getting exactly what I want before buying. Easier for her that way, and I know exactly what will be arriving at my doorstep (or under the Christmas tree, in my doll's case!)

    16. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
The whole reason I got into Dolls was that my family needed some sort of income, and my mother's friend suggested that we go and make clothings for dolls, because some of those sell at ridiculous prices. So my mother started looking, and started asking me for suggestions so I surfed the web for BJDs.
It wasn't the best reason to start looking, but as we searched, I ran into Angie and Joel from Cherish. I loved their make up, their cast, and I really was thinking about purchasing Angie when I found Mabel from Leeke.
I instantly fell in love, but for a while I couldn't decide which one to go with.
After debating for days and weeks, I bought Mabel.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
The pictures on the Leeke website was gorgeous. I couldn't stop looking at them, and I knew I had to get her.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Her makeup was a little different from the website, and she looks sadder, but none the less she's still beautiful and I love her :)

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Mabel from Leeke, and unfortunately I'm in college currently and there's no space for her to be in my small apartment, so she's with my family. So I don't get to see her often, but she's still there!

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
It wasn't a present, and I have never spent so much money on something other than a computer, so it was a bit scary at first. But I'm glad I bought her :)

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I saw a picture of a fullset Dollzone Ying dressed in a lab coat and instantly wanted the "scientist doll."
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I looked at other dolls and doll companies, but Ying was still the best for me.
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope. I'm glad I chose Ying. He looks much better in person than on the online images. So far, the longer I have him, the more I believe he was the right one.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
I still have my Dollzone Ying and don't plan on selling or trading him for a different doll.
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Well, I chose the doll, but someone else bought it for me, so I guess it was a present, but I did get to choose it.

    18. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

It wasn't even a matter of decision. When I saw her, I immediately knew that I want her!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

I kept on looking for owner's photographs but didn't find too many. At one stage I even gave up... But she was still on my mind and I knew that no other doll will replace her.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?

I'm still waiting for her but I'm not going to regret buying her.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

My first doll will be Iplehouse SID Eva.

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

I chose her myself after considering it for 2-3 months.

    19. Really not.

It was love by the first sight.

My first girl wa a DZ Shoyo she have one year now and i still loing her >//<

    20. Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?
It was really easy in my case.

How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
When I saw her she reminded me of myself. It felt so curious that I could not help but finding out about BJD and getting her.
Her character took a little longer because before her arrival I changed my mind about the character she would be finally and it meant getting a whole crew.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
As soon as I saw her I got that feeling of reminding me of myself.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I got really happy with my choice, still I am. I am glad I did not choose any other one instead.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
CP Luts Delf Soo Special, NS. She arrived home in September 7th, 2005 and since then she is here to stay. So yes, I still own her and always I can I will.

Extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, I was. In fact, I did not think of any other option at all. And kind of yes as well because thanks to my mother's support and help I could achieve her.
