Choosing your first doll - How hard was it for you?

Jul 28, 2008

    1. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I don't think it was so much me choosing him as him firmly stating who he was when browsing various doll sites. It surprised me a little as I hadn't even touched the story he's from in over a year. Yet, as soon as I saw the photo I kinda went "OMG. Moswen!" I kept going back to the site off and on for about a month, looking at him and being all wistful.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Can't say as I've yet to save up the cash required for him.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
He'll be my first and I can't see myself selling him once I have him all spiffied up.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I chose him (sort of) and I suppose you could say he's a present from my Hubby (who has insisted that I get him because it'll make me happy) and a present from myself.

    2. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Unlike a lot of other people i had no characters in my mind when looking for a doll, but after looking at this one mold a story sort of came to me over the weeks

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I'm still yet to buy him/save up the money

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
He will be my first and i hope i'll never have to sell him, not that i can imagine me doing so:)

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
My parents would never buy me such an expensive thing! i'm getting some accessories for xmas though =]
but I have total control over what i want, how much i choose to spend and when i buy him

    3. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I decided in one look at her. At the beginning, I thought I would never buy myself one of these so expensive dolls;) but I found them very beautiful. And... when I saw the Sooah, I thought "finally, I'll have one, and it will be this one and no other". But I must say that I thought "if I finally buy one, why not get a doll who look like me?" and this was not the case with her so that's why I checked other model (but I only kept the Sooah in mind).

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I didn't think I would have several dolls. I only wanted this one and... I went on watching the photos and began hesitating between several. I thought "Ill just have one, it's impossible for me to have several dolls". So, I decided stopping watching other dolls and I bought the ONE that gave me this "love at first sight" :fangirl:

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I must admit I was a bit disappointed because the Elfdoll body is absolutely difficult to manipulate... but I find her face so beautiful that I cannot judge her only on this only inconvenient.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
My first doll was an Elfdoll Sooah and I still own her.

    4. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I took a loooong time! I went through almost every website. I admired the beauty of all those dolls, but I didn't feel the urge to own any of them; Until I saw MO-2! I immediately of a name for him. That settled it! :)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Everything was right! I had the cash.He was reasonably priced. He was the right size! It was fated, I tell you! Fated! (Saké ::sweat )

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Unhappy? no. Jittery? yes! I was afraid I wouldn't be able to bond with him.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Saké - A DZ Mo-2. He is my one and only. It seems like it going to stay that way too! ....Unless I find a DZ Megi- 2 at a good price! ;)

    5. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
The first i saw her i know i'd like to have her, no doubts. :) But i did some research for months before i bought her, to make the right decision.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I had to admint, i considered the price also, because i didn't know what to expect, but mainly because i just fell in love with her face. And she was a gift also.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Nope, i was totally fell in love with her (again) when i saw her in person.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
She is AoD Qian, and yep.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, my boyfriend bought for me as a present for our anniversary, and we ordered her together, he helped me to chose the right one.

    6. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Honestly I don't know that I decided which should be my first so much as it just happened. I had seen these dolls, lots of them, and when I saw the MNF Shushu I thought "OK, I'll save up and get her." But then she got a name, and a character, and brought other characters with her... I still don't have HER, but was able to get two of the other characters that are part of her story. It's like they already exist, and I'm just bringing them home in whatever order I find them in. Riddick will always be my first, but it's not like there was some huge significance to me in choosing who was going to be "first" like it was an honor - he's just the first I found and could afford without waiting months for. I'm figuring the whole crew will get here eventually and the order is less important. The crew as a whole is what is important to me - they belong as a group and are significant as a group.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I saw Riddick on the marketplace, and thought he was cute, and might work for one of my characters, and came with clothes and with hair that was perfect for another character of mine. I wasn't planning on getting him, though. But then I kept going back and looking at him over and over, and getting worried that he might sell, and so I counted my money and found I could afford him so I got him. If he hadn't appeared on the marketplace then, I'd probably have ordered a MNF Shushu first, and might not have gotten a DZ Mo at all (or even have a doll here yet), so I'm glad it happened like this.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not at all. Riddick is awesome, and while the character has changed a bit to suit him better, he's perfectly who he needs to be. I also am glad I had him first since his stringing seems more standard than Crow's, and he seems more sturdy and stands better. I'd not be so confident with handling Crow if I hadn't had Riddick first.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Riddick, my Dollzone Mo-2. He's only been here a bit over a month, and yes I still own him. He's perfect for the character I want him to be, and I can't imagine selling him unless I was getting out of the hobby entirely which I hope doesn't happen. I might upgrade his body to the double-jointed one, though.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
I chose him. I'd love to get a doll as a gift, but I don't see it happening. I'd love to ask my family to get me a Puki for Christmas this year, but then I realize that will mean they'll know exactly how much such a tiny doll costs, and think it might not be a good idea.

    7. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
It was funny actually. I knew I wanted VOLKS. Then I knew I wanted small-sized lol. So I went to check on the YOSD database (Where Angels Lie)
I scanned through the profile pics briefly (thumbnails) and there it was. First head mold that made me stop looking through the rest hehe.
I went, "he's totally cute!" then did a little more research of him and that was it. ;]

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

Cuz I thought, if up to one point I would stop getting BJDs (regardless of if I would get more or not - undecided) and had to have one.
Then I'd be more than just happy to have him!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
NOOOO WAAAAAAAAAAY. Just wish it would be easier to get boy clothes of such size lol

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Volks YOSD Boy Ayumu and yes, still have him with me.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

Yup. Gift from my parents ;]

    8. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I poked around a lot, I had really fallen for the A-line minifee bodies. So I sat there debating what face I liked best.
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
Fairyland released the Carl sculpt just as I was starting to sigh and go "okay, maybe this one" with the existing molds. The mold just jumped at me as "meee! meeeee! I want to come stay! Pick meee!" I ordered the same day they had released Carl permanently (I had not seen it when it was released as "B" earlier)
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I was super worried for a little while, but soon as I got her box though, I was very much pleased with my choice.
I had almost ordered a Soom Beryl a few months prior, but ended up in an argument that made me miss the order dates. Much as I love Beryl and the other demi-humans at Soom, Aidara's made me realize that the SDs and up are just way too big for me right now, especially in my little apartment.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it? A Minifee A-line Carl girl. She's standing on my desk right now. I don't think she'll be going to anyone else.

    9. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?

was to hard, but i want a girly, and a really cute tipe. i want first a msd cause the size.
then one day i see cindirella from angell studio and i love the face! and the hands! and the body!!! lol and i say that its what i want!

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?

when i see pictures of she everyday

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that

well untill this time (she dont come yet) but i feel really happy

      you've ordered another one?

      not yet
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?

      is cindirella from angell studio

extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?

i was able to choose it and she is a present too

    10. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I was going back and forth between three molds: Souldoll Lee Jun Ki, Soulldoll Kanguk, and a Migidoll Ryu. I almost bought a second-hand Lee Jun Ki in the marketplace here, but decided in the end that I didn't want to start out with such an expensive doll. I loved Souldoll's photos of Kanguk as well, but since there weren't any owner's pictures yet I didn't feel comfortable purchasing him. I'm glad I didn't. Once I saw owner pictures I completely lost interest for his sculpt. It was the Migidoll Ryu sculpt that originally got me interested in bjds. I browsed hundreds of owner pics and didn't see a single one I didn't like, so I knew he had to be the one. Plus he was cheaper ;)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I knew when I saw how versatile the Ryu sculpt could be.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
While I have had second thoughts about entering the hobby, I don't regret buying the doll that I did. I still have him and I'll probably always love him.

    11. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I picked her because she was a brand new line of dolls, no one else had her, and something about the sweet half smile on her face made me really happy. Plus they were running a contest to get the fullset. Ten people would win the make-up clothes wig and shoes... I tried my luck, and WON!
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When I knew I could afford it, and when I saw her. She just made me happy (and still does)
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I debated if it was the right choice for a long time before she arrived, and then when she finally did, I could not have been happier about it.
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Sr. Delf Blanchet by LUTs, and yes I still own her.
extra question: Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes, I picked her, my sister helped me out.

    12. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
umm. I think I am way different from most of the people here in what it comes to this - I had known about bjds for years but never actually wanted to own one (considered them pretty much useless. pretty, but useless, not to mention too expensive.). then one night I ended up browsing something doll-related, and started looking at doll companies' sites after a long while again. I got on soom's site and then... then I saw namu and the familiar feeling of WANT hit me. I waited for a few days trying to tell myself it's a waste of money, but ended up ordering him within a week from my original WANT experience. I wasn't looking for a doll at all, so there never was any deciding about my first doll. I just saw him and bought him nearly instantly, almost as an impulse order. (well, I had the extra money back then...)

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
on my WANT moment. ;D I pretty much explained it on the first question, oops.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
no! now that I am actually looking at other dolls with the "who next?" mindset, I've realised I couldn't have gotten a better sculpt as my impulse order first doll, I am very nitpicky about small things in the sculpts and namu is one of the very few ones I don't have anything to nitpick on, hahah.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
soom namu, and of course. I haven't even had him for that long yet.

    13. The choice of my first doll was really very simple. I saw the product-pictures of him (Soom MA Rex) on the Soom website, and I've been in love ever after. Originally it started out with that I found a beautiful picture of a Sabik in dA, and followed a link to Sooms website where I came across the Rex-sculpt, and I was totally sold right away, and I still am ^^ Just looking at him makes me happy, even tho he hasn't got any face-up, eyes or wig yet.
      He's a doll I'll NEVER sell.

    14. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
i looked at the pictures and just knew i had to have him. i havnt seen him yet lol but i atleast need to see him in person so no regrets even if he isnt what i thought he'd be
And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
right away. i bought him just over 24 hours of his release
Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
i dont have him yet but if im going to like BJD's in general than im sure i will love him. however it is hard knowing im not gettting my twin girls first but they are not limited so i have plenty of time
Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
dont have him yet but ill let you know when i do

    15. I came into BJD without knowing anything about them really. Someone on another forum linked to Soom's site and I saw Sabik. He was sold out and I was so sad. Then Soom did the FFD and I bought him right away, I just had to have him. Then I started to research BJD, so I'd know more about them and how to care for them. I did it sort of backwards I guess. There wasn't much thought process in what doll to buy, because Sabik was just the doll I wanted. Also he was only the second BJD I'd ever really seen. Before I thought BJD were kinda weird. I guess you could say that Sabik converted me? :)

I'll always have my Virgil, it would break my heart if I had to sell him. I'm so glad I got him and that he was my first doll. I wouldn't have any other way. I love him as much now as when I first saw him. :D

    16. I had been browsing around the doll sites with a classmate and came across a Dollzone Mo at Junkyspot. I thought he was a very pretty looking doll and it was kind of sad that he was a boy. Then a couple months later I saw the tan Mo and I decided that I really wanted one, but with a girl body. When I started actually shopping around for one, I still wanted one, but I felt I had to look at other dolls so that I would be able to get the one I wanted most. Going back to Junkyspot since I didn't have the DoA link list, I saw a B&G Freya I loved, and Hera who looked like a small version of her. I was torn between Hera and the Mo2 with tan skin and a girl body. Since she came with hair and was cheaper than all the other dolls on the list, I put in an order for Hera.
After I ordered her though, I felt a little regretful of my decision. I had built up Mo in my head and for Hera I was drawing a blank for ideas. So, after talking with people at my local BJD forum, I decided that I had made a mistake. Fortunately, Denver Dolls had emailed me to say that Hera was out of stock and would I still like to go through with the order? I jumped at the chance and changed the order to a girl Mo, who ended up costing me $150 more, but I felt a considerable amount better about her. I am very confident that I will be happy with her when she comes, because she is the one I wanted the most of all. :D
The decision was made hard for me because I had wanted to save money. After I had decided I wanted a doll, I was still thinking that maybe I would just order a single head and the body later. When I went to look at the prices though, I had found out that not only did ordering the head and body separately cost more money in the end, it was even more extra if I wanted tan skin. I finally ended up realizing that I would really be the happiest in the long run if I ordered a whole doll together, and that led me to the whole issue between Hera and Mo. And the Dollzone Ray, but I'm content with him being second after Mo. I compromised a little bit though by ordering a cheaper wig, mostly acrylic eyes, no clothes but one pair of cheap shoes, and no faceup. I could have gotten a bonus Leo for ordering a bunch of extra Dollzone stuff while I was "splurging" and that was really tempting, but the desire to really not spend that much won out in the end. :sweat

    17. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I remember the first day that I logged into DoA... I was wishing to get a Hyde doll. When I saw one in LJ and at DoA marketplace, it took time to decided whether I want to get him. In the end, I grab the chance to get him!

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I am sooooooo happy with him! I love him!

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
Hyde is... Though, he is second hand... I plan to keep him as long as I can. ^^ For lifetime might be...

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present?
Yes! He was exactly what I wanted! Hyde DIM Minimee... I'm a big Hyde Fangirl... ^^

    18. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
Technically, I don't have anything but floating heads and self-mades right now, but the way I chose the first floating head was actually because I wanted to get a cheap head to try face-ups on. She's actually a tiny obitsu, so she's off topic, so my first resin, on-topic doll was my Gary Oldman Minimee. I didn't really decide he was going to be my first, the group order did it for me. I was plotting buying a Tender Lahoo off of the marketplace when I saw the GO set up, and as Gary Oldman is my favorite movie Dracula, he was the one doll that I absolutely COULD NOT let slip through my fingers. So I did everything I could to scrounge around for the money, literally broke my bank account to do it, and got him over the summer. Now...he just needs...er...a body...and hair...and clothes...and maybe another pair of eyes...and...*_* My poor, jobless, empty, actually-now-closed-because-I-moved-hundreds-of-miles-away bank account...:...(

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
I knew he had to be my first pretty much the moment I realized if I didn't get into the group order, I wouldn't ever have the chance to have the perfect little Dracula. Since Dracula is my favorite historical and literature figure, I had to have it.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
I really only got unhappy with it when I lost my job shortly after buying him, when my mom found out she had a job in a city hundreds of miles away and would be moving the next day, and that I was probably going to fail the college classes I didn't have the money to pay the tuition for because I didn't make enough money to pay what the government didn't allow me to get in loans. All in...about the span of one day. It was one of those bad days.

But then I got over my funk, and I felt a little better, and now that I'm back with my mom and looking to get a job in a big city where I'll actually be able to make more money then I ever could have hoped to see in the rural town I was in before, I'm feeling better about having him, and I wouldn't have it any other way. He's not the ONLY Dracula doll I want to have, but he's going to be a wonderfully happy addition to my little collection of Vlads.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
As said before, It was the Gary Oldman Minimee in Normal Skin. I still got him, painted his face myself, and he's carrying his "little sister," the floating obitsu head, in his headcap, along with a few little accessories I have for them both. and some change, I think? o_o He's wearing a knit cap I made him because he doesn't have a wig, and he's watching my room from atop my CD shelf. I love him to bits and pieces, and I don't think I'll EVER give him away. :3 or sell him, either. ;)

    19. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first?
I shopped around a bit...though back then, there weren't nearly as many companies as there are now (it was pretty much limited to Volks, Luts, Custom House, SoulDoll, and Dream of Doll, maybe a couple others)...but when I saw Chiwoo, I was instantly in love.

And when did you know that this doll should be your first?
When he made my heart ache in a way that none of the others had. :(

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one?
Not really, although I do wish I'd been a little more patient and ordered him from Luts (this was back when their dolls were never in stock), rather than grabbing one off ebay.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it?
CP Chiwoo, and yes. He's my baby. :aheartbea

    20. How did YOU decide which doll should be your first? I stumbled upon a picture of her somehow browsing the internet and instantly knew I had to find a way to have her. I knew absolutely nothing about BJD's at the time. Didn't even go on a major frenzied search to look at others. I just knew.

Did you get unhappy with your choice? Do you wish / did you wish that you've ordered another one? I am extremely happy with my choice, she was the perfect introduction to the BJD world for me. I adore her more than I thought I could.

Which doll was your first and do you still own it? Luts Lishe. Yes I still own her, I cannot imagine ever selling her at this point. She is very special to me especially being the first.

Were you even able to choose it? Was it a present? I snapped her up as fast as I could. She was a gift to myself :)
