Coherent Collection or Motley Crew?

Mar 10, 2011

    1. Mixed for me. I like a lot of dolls of different sizes and companies. Also in clothing each doll has its own style!

    2. my family is totally unmatched, but i like it that way. i buy the dolls for their individual selves, and not to look like they're related or anything. :)

    3. I'd say I have a more of a motley crew, when it comes to sculpts, though I do have a few dolls from the same company and they seem to mesh okay. I've noticed I tend to dress them girly though, skirts and stuff, or frilly dresses. But the frilly dresses and skirts and all aren't all the same style - I have one girl dressed in sweet pink colours, another in a punky sort of tartan red. Though I think this might also be because I find skirts practical for movement as well. My Tatiana Pierrot came in black short shorts, and I loved the outfit on her, but the shorshorts got stuck in her joints, and stained her a little :( So she's in her spare outfit at the moment, which is a brown and cream dress set.

    4. I'd say my collection is coherent in my mind but in reality is fairly eclectic. I have 10 dolls from 8 different companies (AoD, FL, BBD, RS, Cherish, CD, OD and one that is a limited collab doll). I have plans to add 5 more dolls (1 SD, 1 MSD & 3 YO-SD's). Of those 5 dolls, 3 are from companies I don't currently have dolls from (HZ, Doll-Love & Lume) and 2 are from a company I do have a doll from (RS).

Why do I do this? Because finding the perfect sculpt to be a character is more important to me than having everybody matchy-matchy. And I figure that since they're physical representations of original characters of mine, it totally makes sense for them to not look similar since some are even different species. It can make it a bit of a nightmare to clothe my dolls as their sizes are all over the board, but since I make all their clothes, I can work around that fairly easily.

    5. I have a realistic Elfdoll K-ss (smallest SD head ever) sitting next to a stylized Volks SwD Lucas (giant bobble-head). Mix definitely. They don't have to look good together, the only thing important is that I'm head over heels with them.

Besides, I kind of like all the different aesthetics. If I'm bored with one, I have another to go to!

    6. My dolls are all pretty much from one of 3 companies and all are in that companies Normal Skin. All are human or elves only difference is the ears. As for dressing I prefer they dress their age and keep them in causal clothes for most part. Other then that I have no clue if they match or a are a mix mash but I love them all regardless.

    7. My intentions are matchy but the actual collection is mixy. :) I like the dolls that go together stylistically, but then I have impulse buys so I end up with two Pipos kitties amongst the realistic Minimees... that kind of thing.

    8. My collection looks pretty cohesive to me, probably because I do most of their faceups and they all wear 14mm eyes. ^_^ Also, I'm seriously picky about sculpts, and I have a very narrow aesthetic. My big boys are all (relatively) small headed, small eyed, semi-realistic sculpts (so far). The only thing that differs greatly is the skintone. 8D It's not really *that* hard to photograph a dark tan next to a white-skin doll~ /beams happily at Chalco and Appini. For the little ones, they come from (almost) the same companies as the big ones, so there's some 'family resemblance' there. ^_^

    9. If you are willing to share any photography tips, please PM me, I would really appreciate some help! My doll is probably about twice as dark as a Chalco, which makes photos a right pain! I seriously need to figure out how to take pics of him with my other dolls. If it's light enough to see the details of his face and clothing, then it's far too bright for the pale dolls - they all blanch out to nothing.

    10. Well, I have one doll, and am waiting for uh...three more. o_o; (One of 'em bought for me by someone very close. <3) They're from two sorta-related companies and all in roughly the same size range. I guess that's coherent!

    11. If he's darker than Chalco, then I'm not sure if I can be of any help. ^_^;;; I usually shoot on more or less auto mode with my little point and shoot cameras, and I rarely have problems with exposure, even when shooting with WS dolls? It does give me a problem if the face recognition mode kicks in, though, so I try to shoot without it as far as possible...

    12. Almost all of my dolls are roughly in the same size, and I try to keep the collection coherent. There are slight differences in their head sizes and scale, though (and it does annoy me sometimes), because there are both mature/slim and more childlike minis, and from different doll companies, too. But they still look okay as a group (since clothing and face-up can make at least a teenager out of a "childlike" mini sculpt).

    13. Ooooh wow, I love all the different responses here ;) Though I can respect a matching collection, I know that will never be the case with my dolls! I have anything from tinies to 70cms on my wishlist, and the faces are all completely different. The only coherency might be that all these characters are from storyverses that converge together more often than not. Considering these storyverses have incredibly varied characters I don't feel it's too far of a stretch to have the dolls vary greatly too. After all, for me it's more that the sculpt and face fit the character rather than the size of the doll or its combination with others :3 I'll be pairing an Unoa with an Elder Angelheim for Pete's sake!

    14. Motley as they get!

Well, ok, not entirely motley -- I have two more or less theme-based groups that need to work with each other, in terms of size and overall coherence. But as an overall collection, it's more along the lines of "ooo, pretty!" at our house.

    15. All different sizes, colors and styles xD

The only size of which I have multiple dolls is MSD, though one of them is still a floating head. I will be happy when that head gets her body (still waiting ...) but then again, the problem gets worse :p Got two MSD heads on the way aswell xD
I hope at least two of my MSDs will fit together, never done a real shoot with two dolls before :p

The style of the faces varies between semi-realistic and very stylized. And the heads on their way are minimees, which are very realistic...
The only thing most of them have in common is their expression. All my boys are a bit moody. :p

    16. I like to mix it up. I don't want a giant crew, so I want to cover all the aesthetics I like the appearance of rather than similar dolls. The only downside that bothers me is photography. I got a tan doll first so photographing my others dolls always makes me screech about how they look like ghosts if I'm not careful.

    17. I think my family is rather mixy. I'm thinking of doing some group pictures, and having some trouble planing just how I will do that. Probably will my mnf go together and my 70 cm be together. Other than that is a bit harder.... I do not really care. I like what I like, simple as that :3

    18. Mine is a mixed crew but mostly normal skinned, with a few white skinned dolls in the mix.

    19. Since I know what your crew looks like, I'd say they all share a definite mood and style, not matter what height or color they are..they are all splendid (and have a sort of woodsy elfin look). I say put the dark ones in the sunny spots between the trees and the paler ones in the shade. ;) There are some doll owners who I can always spot, no matter what the mold, especially the doll owners that sew or customize their own dolls, and it makes even the motliest crew hang together beautifully!

As for my own, I have no idea...I think they share "quirky" as a style;) 3 eyes, chicken feet, pupilless eyes, claw hands, mech hands...I think I have one "normal" guy. *_*

    20. *sigh* I suppose it's a motley crew for me. I've currently got a Musedoll boy sitting next to a Dollmore Adam, and a Lati K... would you believe that I find that cohesive? My dolls come from four separate story lines at the moment, with the possibility of more being added later. Thus, cohesiveness really depends on which group you're talking about. I have nearly all of the Lati Red line for example, and they look wonderful together. I've also got two from Dollmore and one Planetdoll girl who look perfectly similar as a group. My Musedoll boy looks perfect with my SWITCH and Luts heads, and I love all shades of tan, Normal yellow and normal pink resin etc. etc. All grouped together they'd look a bit odd, but I doubt that I'd ever to a complete group photo...
