Coherent Collection or Motley Crew?

Mar 10, 2011

    1. Coherent here..To a degree, if they are in the same family they must look like they are related or similar.
It does not cross over between families as they are interlinked story wise but entirely different.
I am a bit over the top about coherence as even wigs must be an almost identical shade inter family!
It gets worse....The magic number is 12 & the sum total of all must be no more than this or one must go,(I don't count pets/anthro's or tiny's in this.
      Therapy anyone?

    2. Mixed for me. I have groups that work together for photographs, or for little vignettes I arrange around my house.

But, I have this sense that I need to cover a variety of types. It is one of the few ways I can control my buying. If a doll is too much like one I already have, then I may admire and pass. Although I did get interested in the Luts especially for a while, and have "duplicated types" there. Guess I was filling an unconscious need for one "cohesive group type" ~ I also have elves that are meant to work together.

In my doll world, their personalities are like dogs. Dogs don't seem to be aware of their size. It amuses me. I think they see each other's personalities, and are somewhat blind to their outward differences. :XD: er...dogs and dolls. Though they are aware of gender. ;)

    3. Technically my crew is mixed. I'd like to have a coherent collection and I try very hard to find sculpts that resemble the characters (who exist in the same story universe) I have in mind while at the same time match with other dolls currently in my collection...but it hasn't always worked perfectly. I've had to adjust to certain sculpts--like my Soom Mecha Angel hybrid, the character is not supposed to theoretically be over 8 foot tall in proportion to the rest of my crew but the way I have him now represents the character the best. On the other hand, I've sold MSD sized dolls and sought out for different sculpts because their heads were way too small in comparison to my Volks MSD girl (and she pretty much sets the standard of which MSD stays and which doesn't because she's a definite part in my collection); that difference was too bothersome for me.

I guess I'm willing to bend my own rules if I love the sculpt that much, and it's happened before.

    4. Definitely mixed.

Or what do you think about the fact that at the moment I own three dolls and all of them are different size (one 68cm, one MSD and one petite). And all of them are from different doll companies too (Soom, Luts and FairyLand).

Even their styles don't match. Aaria is always wearing colours like white and green and has old-like clothes such as skirts with underskirts and corsets. Alexander is my japan culture loving boy who dresses as a person who likes that stuff. And Oodi is my little pink-loving girl who likes flower prints and cute skirts and such.

    5. I have 2 Bambicrony Ciao Bellas, Judy and Roko. Roko just received a new face up from the talented Virginia, and she looks like a new doll! I also have Lati Yellow, so she's a bit smaller than the rest. They go together because they all have cute wide eyed girl faces. I am in the process of purchasing from another collector my first MSD, a Bambicrony Grace who will also be my fist tan doll. I think that even with the different sizes and face ups, they are coherent with each other because they have a similar stylized aesthetic. So, to answer the question, I guess I have a coherent motley collection, if that makes sense

    6. Mixed.

I have variety in sizes, races, and clothing styles. The continuity is dark hair and realistic features. Yet, they're all family that just so happen to resemble the UN.

    7. Mine must be a bit of a motley crew because when I put a family photo up on facebook one of my (non-doll) friends was like "what an eclectic bunch...". I think it's the fact that I have 4 normal skin dolls, and a green skin and a tan and then they all have unique haircolours....in short...mine are an odd bunch.

    8. All my dolls are from different companies and I have a MSD and two SDs but I would say that they generally look coherent in aesthetic sense. They all have brown hair though varying shades. Although I do dress each differently based on personality and concept so they are not meant to be sisters so I guess that makes them a mixed bunch as well.

    9. Both coherent and motley for me! :D

I have one storyline of just regular people-types. They fit together pretty well. :) They're a large group of friends and families - most of the family members have matching hair and/or eyes. I make it a point to give these guys synthetic hair and glass eyes, with no iris patterns. And I've given/commissioned faceups for many of them so that they look similar to their other family members. :)

Then there's a second storyline - none of them are related, but they all have similar-ish faces (cuz I painted them all myself), Soom silicone eyes and fur wigs. They are super-coherent - they all dress in a very particular style that's really similar to the others.

And my third storyline, is Soom centaurs. I have two at the moment. :) They are very coherent with each other.

But, all three of these stories really clash with the other. :P

    10. Im just getting started and have found that the molds I am attracted to do have a similar look to them- wide set eyes, slightly frowny or sad looking, small noses. Im going to wig them all in redhair and have a ginger army!

    11. My tastes generally be the same across the board. The slight anomalies might be elf ears here and there. Otherwise, everyone is quite normal looking. Not saying they look all the same, but I go with very humanoid and realistic sculpts. My dolls aren't a family, but I don't want my girl's boyfriend to look really out there and alien in comparison to her.

    12. I have... Luts, Iplehouse, Dollmore, DIM, and two Minifee. :P So mine aren't at all 'matching'. But they're all in the same size range, and I personally think they look fine together. ...Right now they're all standing on my table, looking like some sort of weird boy band. > >'

    13. I used to have a very large (30), very mixed group consisting of all different types and sizes; however, I sold them all and now mine fit into 2 very distinct groups. While all are SD sized they stay in seperate groups: my Gackt Minimees and my 'others' which are stylistically the same (Volks/Angel Region/Elfdoll).

    14. My collection is definitely a coherent group. Almost all my dolls come from one company (Soom), and the ones that aren't all come from one other company (Pipos). The Pipos crew only fit in because they're meant to be demons, so they are supposed to have slightly different æsthetics, as well.

I do have some variation built-in, though - I'm a huge fan of fantasy ears. I collect as many different types as I can. The few dolls I have who came with human ears, I am planning to mod to give fantasy ears. I do also collect fantasy parts, and use them to add some visual variation amongst my collection.

    15. Started Coherent with Luts/CP sculpts, but since have branched out to Motley with Soom and ResinSoul. All my dolls look good together however, they do not look mismatched or out of place beside one another. I would not limit myself just to one brand, if I like the sculpt I would consider getting the doll.

    16. Mixey for me. My wishlist includes dollies from Soom, Souldoll, Luts, Doll Factory, and AngelHeim (I also want a Brownie Doll, but am not sure if that's the company name or not). What makes them a single cohesive unit is the situation they're in--their very diverse backstories lead them all to a single spot in time and space, and thus unite them.

    17. I'm very very new, but it will probably ended being a mixed crowd for me. I'm interested in dolls with different styles (love realistic human-like ones but also fantasy mods) and different sizes. I thought i wouldn't like anyone smaller than a Minifee, but a meet changed my mind. ^^;;;

    18. My dolls compliment one another but by no means are "matchy"...

I have two different story sets though (one for my minis specifically and then the rest are another story). I have lots of different companies (I hybrid like crazy) and it works well for me :D

    19. I think I'm going say brand motley but sculpt coherent. I love a lot of brands but I'm drawn to the dolls that have that stylized look that says " Look at me I'm a cute doll!" or the "Look at me I'm a pretty boy doll!". I think all my wish list dolls have a similarity to them in their vibes (maybe minus the anthros), they can all have different looks from innocent child to Gothic vampire for all I care, but there's just something in their sculpts that relays the same message.

Who knows maybe I might eventually move away from the stylized dolls to the more realistic dolls.

    20. In that I collect what appeals to my eye, I have a cohesive collection but if I line them all up for a family photo I've got a pretty motley collection. They've got to have a face that catches my eye and then steals my heart.
