Coherent Collection or Motley Crew?

Mar 10, 2011

    1. I try to be coherent about scale and height.
My dolls are from Soom, Iplehouse, AngellStudio, Dollstown and Dollzone.
The ones that are a bit off are usually not human.
They have their own style otherwise.

    2. I buy the sculpts I like, my favorite companys are Peakswoods and Doll Chateau, so it will be kind of cohesive anyway if I keep that up (2 DC and one PW atm). But I have some different dolls on my wish lost, so in the ent it will probably be a crazy crew. But I like that.

My big ptoblem is not dirrefent sculpts, but different sizes. I own a MSD but it a really gard size for me compared to yosd or SD.

    3. So far my crew is pretty coherent...I had a couple there that stood out and I ended up selling them because they just didn't fit in. Most of my dolls are Soom, but iple and my Volks tinies seem to be okay now. The only issue I'm having at the mo is that I'm really considering iple Isar, but I'd kind of like her for a grown character of mine and she's MSD size. It's not such a problem as I love msds, but I think in general I can't think of msds as adults. Maybe teens or so. My Rosette is kind of the exception because she's taller. Her size is awkward next to everyone else but that's okay:)

    4. At the moment most of my dolls are from the same companies, so they look great together, but I'll buy from a couple more companies in the future, and that will probably not be as matching. I want several Iplehouse SIDs and EIDs, and they'll looking funny next to my Napidolls. But I don't mind. The dolls have to fit the characters, so what if they don't match each other well.

    5. Motley crew. I have a few pairs of dolls that fit together, but for the rest they're all very different from eachother.

    6. Mixed collection! As for now I have just one doll, the second one, that will arrive soon (in theory) is not only from another company but also an hybrid : )
All the other dolls in my wishlist are from different companies and some of them are hybrids too.
I agree with some others about the fact that it's not the company the dolls are from but their size a more important thing. I like my (future dolls xD) to be in scale (e.g. no mature minies).

    7. I would say that my crew all has a similiar facial esthetic, even if the companies I get them from are varied. This is unintentional (to an extent), though I find I like my yos to be adorable and chubby-cheeked, my MSDs to be on the more mature end of the spectrum and my SDs to have a certain place in the uncanny valley between anime and realistic.

I tend to stick to LUTS, DoD and Soom, though I own a few other random companies and will soon have 3 from angellstudio. I had an EID and a Idealian and I find that while they photograph beautifully, I didn't much care for the super-realism as they sat with my crew.

So in short.. somewhere between the two.

    8. I tried to be coherent, I really did. But I started off Motley and even though I purged my collection several times over the last 4 years to make them a more coherent group in a semi-realistic style, I have still ended up a mangled mess of all styles. I only barely remember the days when my collection was largely made up of one or two companies. Now they're all over the place. Just in the last few days, I've given up. It's impossible to fight it! Apparently I'm just going to own all kinds of dolls XD

The only thing that saves me is if they are ok together for what they're supposed to represent if that makes sense. As long as they're all in scale with one another I'm happy. Plus most of them are faceuped by me, so that helps to pull them all together!

    9. I have a very motley crew. I have so many different bodies from different companies it's crazy. But I like having a variety to my dolls because it makes them more like people by having so many differences. They do tend to fall into the same range of looks as I tend to prefer a specific sort of facial structure (Realistic vs Anime, I'm in the middle somewhere), and the face-ups are mostly all done by the same person, so that bring cohesion to the collection. That they are from the same world also helps. I try to keep like groups in the same height group or at least everyone in proportion to how each is suppose to be to each other.

    10. I prefer my crew to be motley. But then, I've never really worried about my dolls matching with each other, just as long as the mold fits the character. Motley is more fun for me anyways. More variety. :)

    11. I honestly don't mind either way. Matchy or mixed, either is fine to me! I have a feeling my crew will be fairly matching for awhile. My wishlist has a lot of dolls from the same companies on it that I want to get first(lots of fairyland and a few luts) but as the list goes on into dolls I'd love to have in the next ten years, etc. there are lots of different brands that I know won't match CP so well.

    12. I guess my thing would be define motely crew? I see my dolls as fitting together into a cohesive whole. I don't discriminate between companies I see a doll that works for the character and I try to get that doll. I think that I have separate groupings but they are all part of the same story and therefore make a cohesive unit. But to each there own.

    13. I tend to focus on individual dolls. But the interesting thing is that I have particular tastes, which results in me getting certain types of girls and clothing options (usually gothic). So, although I didn't intend it necessarily, my dolls end up looking good together as a group too. I guess you could say I go for a theme, but just unconsciously.

    14. My dolls are all from the same town & know each other (or get to know each other). So they all have to look in scale to each other (ie I can't get Idealian 51s ~sob~, or mature tinies unless I want to make them little people). However, other than that, I pick the dolls thru this convoluted system of mine (think of a cosplay I want to do, see if I've planned for a doll that can do that cosplay, if not find a sculpt & write in a new resident of my dolly town LOL).
People are all different bone structures, sizes, shapes etc. So are my dolls.

    15. My collection is very mixed, and always will be. I'm not trying to fill characters, I just pick out dolls that look beautiful to me. I wanted a Pipos Star Cheshire, so I got one. But it would be (almost) impossible to relate him to a 70 cm Dollshe or Soom Super Gem. I don't limit myself on size, skin tone, gender, style or anything really. If I love it, I get it!

    16. Coherent. All of my girls are and will be PW FOC, they boys will still be SDs and match my girls but they can be from Leeke, DOD, B&G or wherever.

I don't think I will ever have any size besides SD.

    17. I've already replied here once, but seeing as I now have more than one doll and have learned a little more what I like and will go after in a doll I feel I can give a more experienced answer...

Matchy or mixy? Do you think it's important to create a doll collection that's aesthetically pleasing as a group? Or do you focus, instead, on individual dolls and not worry too much about how they look next to your other dolls?

My collection is definitely on the Mixy side; I took a group photo and my friends described them as all being of a different species XD
Promith looks 'normal', Kle looks like some type of 'barbarian warrior druid', Dom is a Faerie so that's kind of expected, and Gil looked like he just walked out of a Tolkien novel although now that he has his actual outfit everyone who isn't familiar with his character thinks he's a pirate...

I definitely focus on the individual dolls, I go after the sculpts that completely and utterly snatch my attention, whether or not they will fit in with my other dollies. The only doll I have that is able to be photographed with the rest of my dolls without looking horribly out of proportion is Dom, my Faerie, and that's because he's a Faerie XD
If I were to want a companion for a specific doll, then I would worry about whether or not the two would be aesthetically pleasing whilst seated next to each other. But so far that's not looking likely...

I like having such a variety, if I had a collection where everyone was tied down by a certain look I think I would get sort of bored and feel restricted... One of the things I love about this hobby is that I can take a doll and turn it into what ever vision I happen to see of it, there are so many different possibilities I wouldn't ever want to trap myself with following just one of them.

Well, yeah, that's my updated answer XD

    18. My collection has always been coherent and "matchy". I want all my new arrivals to look good with my first (Volks Link), who set the standard for size and aesthetic in my house. I still compare every new doll to him. I do have two MSD size, but they are little boys. My entire BJD universe is "Hiro-sized". :)

Volks and DollZone are the bulk of my collection, with a small SoulDoll deputation and a few "one offs" from other companies. The anime look prevails, with no one who is super-realistic.

    19. I'm just starting, but I don't think I could ever limit myself to a particular company or try to have all the dolls in the same style. There's just so much to choose from!

    20. I've got an intentional motley crew. I'm putting together a 'monsters' collection of freaky dolls (zombie, werewolf, dragon, etc.), though I am keeping them (for the most part) at 1/3 size. My wife is getting me a sort of plant-boy for Christmas, and I think he's a 1/4. He'll be my first 'little' doll. ^^
