Coherent Collection or Motley Crew?

Mar 10, 2011

    1. A bit of both?

Mixy - I have a lot of different companies and skin tones, I like variety! and different styles/personalities. I have a rocker group, secert agent group, punk skater group, nerds....some merge in different groups.

Matchy - All of my dolls are human except one (which I'm trying to sell). All are SD except for kids and a few adults that would be short IC. Everybody has realistic hair colors. This is because their stories intwine and supernatural/anime characters do not fit in with my realistic human world.

    2. i dont think any of my girls match each other! barely, are both my DOD girls but one is super old and the other is very new so they look very different x-x

    3. I also have a lot of different companies and skin tones (from Dollzone to Soom, or Fairyland, DOD, Luts, IH, etc...and i have a lot of different skin tones: white, tan, bronze, normal pink, normal yellow, grey, green, etc..).

I like very much variety, different styles and personalities. I will be not able to have all dolls from the same company. I have an human group, a fantssy group with elves, dragons, etc....even a manga group with some anime characters turned into BJDs.

    4. I collect whatever catches my eyes too :P it is just a coincidence that all my MSDs are from DOD as I don't like the MSD scuplts from other companies and I have tinies and SDs from other places too. I don't mind if they look different, not everyone is the same in some families. ^.~

    5. I mix it up. I have elves, anthros and humans; every scale from 9cm tiny to 72cm SD (including OT dolls) and skin tones from pure white to tan. Lots of different companies, too. Even their characters aren't all from the same universe. XD The only cohesive element is that I love them all.

    6. So, which do you prefer? Matchy or mixy?

For the moment I have only a single doll but I have already planned to buy several other dolls which will come from various companies, so : mixy ^.^.

Do you think it's important to create a doll collection that's aesthetically pleasing as a group? Or do you focus, instead, on individual dolls and not worry too much about how they look next to your other dolls?

I really prefer to focus on individual dolls cause every dolls are special. They all have their own faces, make-ups, clothes and styles. That would seem to me a little bit strange to have all my dolls of the same company... even if i really like the company lol. I also think that that would annoy me a little bit after a while if they were too much alike ^^'.

    7. I love a motley crew. It's mostly because I look at the dolls themselves and what they represent as an individual instead of an entire group.. but I am thinking about getting a second doll to match my Mei's style and outfit. Not sure if I'd go for twins or something else yet.

    8. My dolls are from different houses and different sizes, in addition to having a hybrid doll, I do not care about the aesthetics for photographs, I always fall in love with different molds. In my family we have a mixed breed cousins of various ethnicities and my dolls have followed this course.

At home, Erick (Don Ringdoll), Hwang Lee (Luke # 1 Dream Of Doll) Hana Kiori (Cherie Iplehouse) Kalishi (head or Eris Doll / impldoll body) and head of Tae (souldoll)

    9. Mixed, I think? Well, it's somewhat both coherent and mixed, because out of my current 5, 2 are more stylised (CP lishe and SDF Bliss) and 3 are more realistic (Migi Jina and 2 Mihos), but at the same time, I seem to lean towards a few of each type, so that's the coherent part. I don't feel that they look out of place though, even when I take photos of my Bliss and Jina together.

    10. My collection is absolutely not coherent in the least, and I don't mind it that way at all. XD Their backstories are not intertwined so I don't particularly mind that, and when I do photostories their characters are fully aware they are dolls so the mish-mash mixyness doesn't seem too odd...at least to me. XD I tend to go for what I like when it comes to dolls and avoid restricting myself. Doesn't matter if I have 16cm chibi adults, an anime character and two minis of differing sizes all up in my gang.

I always mixed my toys when I was a little girl, disregarding size, style or make, so this is probably just a carryover of my "lol i dun care w/e" attitude. XD

    11. [IMG]

Here's a part of my resin gang. As you can see I was able to form a very diverse resin gang.
For awhile I was really happy and contented with it as it brings out the personality of each one
of them but as I started taking group pics they tend to "seperate" from each other.

I am currently planning on reshelling some of the charcaters to form a more "cohesive" group
friendly crew. I wanna make photo stories so they really need to be "cohesive".:(

    12. crownedprince - your tanned guy looks like he could be a good mold for an Arthur (from Merlin) mini me x)
      lovely gang :D

I don't know what to call my family. lol. my Beyla and Leeke Mikhaila work together well, sculpt-wise (thinking of the faces), but I have one MSD, one YoSD and one SD, so I guess it looks kind of mixed.
The SD will be going, tho, and I'll have another MSD girl. and perhaps, two SDs in the future.
I'm guessing my family is rather mixed, then.

    13. Mine are a diverse lot. Two SD's and two MSD's. All human but all have very different styles.
I'm thinking of keeping the MSD's in a different room as they don't really look right all together.

    14. Well I've been thinking about this a lot. And if all my dolls were well similar in a way that they all seem to matchas a family,it would probably bore me to death. I like way too many styles of dolls and sizes to stick to one type of size or style. Same with fashion. Somehow they all are going to end up a like punk-ish haha but I'd really like a more sweet mori-girl doll or a casual tomboy.

    15. Mine are totally mixed. Some look good together, others don't. I don't really have a 'group' and I don't really care whether or not a new doll fits in with the rest.
Mine are 10cm, 16cm, 21cm, 28cm, 40cm, 45cm and 70cm. And one of my 16cm girls has the same size head as one of my 40cm girls, so the proportions aren't anywhere the same either.

Mine are mostly 'fantasy' type creatures in different resin colours, though - I rather like having short bow-legged (OT DC) dolls next to long-limbed, elegant, elf-eared ones... :)

    16. In general, I prefer a coherent group. I want my dolls to be a family of sorts. They're not supposed to be related, though, so I don't mind mixing some aesthetics. I have a few exceptions, though, of dolls that I really want even though I know they won't really fit in with my entire planned collection.

Of course, I only have one doll so far and this is just going based off of a wishlist and future planning that could easily change.

    17. Based on what I am purchasing, have in mind and are on my current wish list I'll have a "set" of matching dolls that are semi-related as well as the one-off sculpts I get because I love the sculpt.

    18. If taken as a whole, mine absolutely are a motley crew....LOL! Yet within my crew are subgroups, most of which are fairly coordinated. I have a large scale family made up of Volks and one Dollmore Narsha. Then there's the Pukipuki bunch who are all part of the same storyline set around a Tiki Bar called JEERS...where nobody wants to know your name... ;) The Realpukis are an elfin dynamic duo. while my anthros are a trio of friends, two piggies and a hippo. Last is the just because I love them bunch. This is where it becomes chaotic as they are a mix of sizes, brands, and styles. Yet I collected them all because I love them and accepting that not every doll has to fit into a storyline has been really freeing for me...maybe a little too freeing at times...LOL! ;)

      Juli DC :)

    19. Definitely Motley Crew all the way. I enjoy variety although from a purely aesthetic point of view, I wish I were more on the coherent side. Nonetheless, fat chance of that happening as my tastes change and evolve and the real world does not consist of coherent people. I want to feel each doll has something unique to offer.

    20. Mixed. Three LUTS, two Volks, one Pipos, one Soom. Later, which is still in plan, Iplehouse. Haha.
Size? YOSD and Big ones (70 cm). I decide not to adopt MSD size.

I adopt those I like. No matter from what company ^^
