Collection figures , BJD or both?

Dec 27, 2014

    1. I started off as a figure collector, and I still am one, though I've slowed down considerably on that front- mainly because I'd rather dedicate the lion's share of my fun money to BJDs. :) Recently, I made the decision to whittle down my figure/merch collection to just characters and series I truly love, and sell everything else. (I was a little cavalier about my purchases for a while there, to say the least.)

I do still plan on buying figures, plushes and straps- I've got some stuff preordered right now -but I'm going to be a lot more selective about it. Both of these hobbies are expensive!

    2. I collect both BJDs and figures (mainly from GoodSmile). I buy figures when there's a character from an anime or game that I must have. When I buy dolls, they're meant to be my characters. Even though BJDs are really expensive, I still put aside money for a figure or two when I see one. I love both hobbies and I don't think I'll give either of them up.

    3. I am very much an action figure girl because of my interest in hobbies. I have quite the collection of pop vinyl, action figures and the mini lego toys. I just got into the re-ments mini collecting and am really hoping to get a YoSD sized doll at some point this year for those little figures as well. I don't have any straight up figures, because I like all my comics stuff to be poseable, or at least movable to some degree like the Funko bobbleheads. But I'd say I have a pretty mixed blend of western and asian style dolls and toys.

    4. I love my figma figures and azone dolls so I would say both... I also collect re-ments and I am addicted to them. I am actally new to the bjd hobby, before I collected only azone dolls, obitsus, rement and figmas. But I would say that bjds are more real and I can feel like they are "talking" to me much more than my azones.
But what I love about my azones is that they are so cute, tiny and I can make really easily dioramas for them and use my rements.
Figma figures are just for fun for me, I just collect them.
I am really interested in bjds at the moment so all my money go there and my azone collection is almost closed but I am still collecting rements..

    5. I have a good collection of figures - mostly Tokidoki and video-game related - and then a large collection of vintage MLPs from the 80's and 90's. I've stopped collecting figures, for the most part, and have been slowly whittling those collections down, trying to declutter. So BJDs were definitely the end product for me -- although all the ones I want are so expensive, I see no issues keeping that collection small!

    6. I'd prefer to stick on BJD and on MSD size only. I do likes and admires quite a lot figure, but they're mostly can't be customized.

    7. I collect both. I started with anime figures and then got into bjds. I stopped collecting figures for a while - mostly because there weren't any that really caught my fancy. Now I'm back into figures, there are plenty of characters that I like especially Sailor Moon merch. I try to balance my spending between my two hobbies (I also cosplayed as well, though that has stopped for awhile as I currently live in China away from the convention scene).

    8. I have two really expensive hobbies that tend to compete with each other for my money - BJDs and comics collecting, and more specifically, original comic art which generally speaking each piece is just as expense as a doll if not more way, way more. There are a couple of covers in the $8000-9000 range I would love to have, and I won't even think about how much a Jack Kirby Thor page would cost me, even a bad condition not exciting one! Along with the art, I collect Thor comics and Thor figures and merchandise, which can also get pricey when you are talking about statues and 1/6 scale figures like Hot Toys.

But I do also love my dolls a lot, and each collection provides me with a different sort of satisfaction. So it helps being an adult with a well paying job and no responsibilities beyond myself so I can decide each month how much fun money I have and what I want to spend it on. Sometimes I buy a lot of art and sometimes I concentrate on the dolls. It's really all about what I'm feeling then. There's really no reason to sacrifice one hobby for BJDs if you still enjoy the figure collecting. BJDs aren't inherently better than figures. They're just different and provide a different sort of play.

    9. Ahh! I think I've seen you around MFC before! I personally came from figure collecting. I have been a figure collector for almost 3 years, although I collect at a slow pace. I entered the world of garage kit building also a year ago, so BJD collecting will be my third hobby and probably the most expensive (well...there are a few big statues I would pay the same amount of money a large BJD goes for). Although, with both figures and BJD, I have always been interested in both. I remember looking around Deviantart and seeing photos of BJD and just heavily sighing. I think BJD is something I always knew I'd get into at some point.

As for adjustments and such, I won't be completely quitting figure collecting, but I won't be collecting forever. I have specific things I want for both hobbies, so it's a two way street. I'm not going to be buying continuously for either hobby (infact I plan to stop collecting overall in a few years). I have a set goal in mind, so I am keeping at it.

      Sorry for babbling ahhhh

    10. I tried twice to buy an action figures (Sephiroth from Square Enix and Loki from Hot Toys). And I understood that even an expensive figurine with detailed costume and such is not interesting for me. I need to customize, to sew, to make a doll live and interact, otherwise it's a piece of plastic for me. I have no desire to own, but I have desire to create and express myself through a doll. BJDs are much more versatile in this sense.
I had a very simple dolls before BJDs so, unlike many of you here, I didn't evolve from one doll hobby to another. Though I was in LARP before BJDs.

    11. I collect both anime figures and BJDs and don't prefer one over the other (since buying Nadeko and for a quite a while before I haven't bought any more of either), I see them as different and separate and each having their own appeal so there's no reason to give one up for the other.

    12. I don't collect anime figures, but I do admire many of them since they're often very beautifully sculpted. c: Although I don't actively collect any figures really, I do enjoy buying and putting together Zoids. Plus I've got a variety of dragon sculptures big and small here and there around my room, if that counts. xD
I also want to get a Nendoroid of some sort one day. They're so cute!

As for weather I favor BJDs or other figurines, I personally enjoy both pretty equally. I'd be more willing to spend money on a BJD than, say, an anime figure though, mostly because of the amount of customization that can go into BJDs.

    13. I was an active figure and fashion doll collector before I got into this, but I sold most of the collections to make room for and afford my BJDs. I think it is my love of both dolls and figures together than landed me in the BJD hobby. They combine the qualities I was looking for in each individual collection and merged them into this perfect new thing. I even remember way back in 2000 saying something along the lines of "It's like they knew what I wanted but hadn't imagined yet!"

I kept a few of my old favorites figures and capsule toys and every now and again I put money down for specific characters, but that's it. So I have an RAH, Nendo, Pinkys, Revoltech, etc. and some random artist vinyls. There are Figma I want but don't have yet.

While I have both, BJDs are my main course and figures are my side.

    14. I collected figures first then got into bjds. I still have my older figures but have only bought a few since getting into bjds. I love bjds more for the fact that they are customizable. The figures I like are more like bjds (Hottoys) as they a poseable and you can change their outfits. Also some of my bjds are the same character that I have as a figure.

    15. Anime figures lead me to BJDs but I still collect everything, I just tend to rotate funds and perfect my collections by selling off pieces (luckily I started AnimeCoast.com with my husband so I have constant opportunities to sell my collectibles to fund/make room.) My current collections with rough estimates of pieces include:
14 BJDs with 4 on the way
      40 mini Dals & Pullips
      20 J dolls
30 Ai dolls & Pang Ju
150 or so anime figures (not including gashapon)
400 vintage My Little Ponies MLP(G1)
      70 G3 MLPs
      130 or so G4 MLPs
400+ Sylvanian Families aka Calico Critters (my first collection)
      100s of anime art books
      100s of anime DVDs
50 or so pug collectibles (because I'm pug obsessed)
tons of 80s toys like Furrever Friends, Moondreamers, Strawberry Shortcake, Rainbow Brite, Care Bears, Fashion Star Fillies, Enchanted Horses, Shimmers and Sea Wees, Boglins, She-ra and He-man, etc.
And none of these include my husband's many, many collections. Needless to say, if we ever have to move we are screwed! lol

    16. I think I enjoy BJDs more since the customization is what reeeeally gets me. I love the entire freedom is brings. Now, don't get me wrong, I do own my fair share of regular figures and I still love them dearly BUT! I do wish sometimes I could just maaaybe even change their outfits?? at the very least? hahaha I get so bored of seeing figures with the same outfits x___x

    17. I haven't ever really been big into anime so never had any of those style figures. I did have all the figures from movies like Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Edward Scissorhands, Sleepy Hollow, and a few tv shows like Dexter. They weren't really something I collected as a hobby though. More like I bought the ones that I happened across and thought were cute and then family or friends bought the rest for me as gifts. They're all packed away now since my kids kept getting to them and pieces were getting lost.

I love my dolls so much more. The customization, size, and possibility just amaze me. I guess I only have room in my heart (read: house and wallet) for one beloved collectable.

    18. I have collected all sorts of action figures for many decades starting with my first Barbie in 1963 at the age of 9. Not a baby doll fan I was drawn to fashion dolls until I saw Star Trek in 1967 and my world exploded. I have a fairly good sized collection of Mego STOS figures and playsets. Added a bunch of Star Wars things in the 70's. Collection includes lots of action figures from Avatar, Battlestar Galatica, all the new Star Trek series and movies and a bunch of Matrix movie stuff. In addition, lots of one of a kind art figures like vampire mermaids, my own creations, and of course, a growing collection of BJDs. My partner is going to have a great deal of things to auction off if I die before she does lol. (Being a jock she has a huge sports collection so I really hope I go first!)

    19. I used to collect some fashion dolls (pullip) and also figures but after I was into BJD Hobby, I didn't spend much them with them like before but still...I couldn't decide to sell them off at all. :sweat I let them in boxes and take them out sometimes.

    20. I started collecting BJDs first and only just last year started collecting anime figures. I started out just admiring them and thinking that I would never actually collect any but then one came out that I just had to have. Now I several with 6 more on the way :sweat
