Collection figures , BJD or both?

Dec 27, 2014

    1. I started off as an anime collector in 2012. Just right before I re-discovered the BJD world this month (January), I spent a considerable amount on figures. In December, I bought like 16 figures according to my MFC stats...ouch! I don't stick to one series. I mostly buy figures based on their aesthetic. I also have the habit of bringing the posable figures (Play Arts Kai) with me on trips and take photo of them. They are cheaper substitutes of a BJD but I had a lot of fun with them. Now that I am more serious with BJD, I slowed down a lot in buying figures. I will most likely sell figures I am not THAT attached... to invest in BJD. I think it's gonna be interesting to mix figures and BJD in a collection.

    2. BOTH *wheezes*

I had gotten into figure collecting mid 2014 and I can't be stopped...but collecting both bjds and figures is so expensive, oh my glob :pout:

    3. I collect dolls for their customization aspect...I use BJDs to shell my characters. That said, I'm looking into collecting anime figurines, but I'm not too picky because I just want to have the ones of characters that I truly love ^^;

Plus I only buy figurines when I'm at cons...I find it's becoming as much a part of the con-going experience as cosplay is, for me

    4. I collect both anime figures and bjds. I have collected anime figures for a long time now (twelve years? something like that), so I have shelves and shelves of them. I have been collecting bjds for a year this month. I don't see these hobbies as related, though. I got into bjds through monster high and ever after high, unrelated to collecting anime figures. I also have comic book figures, just not as many as I have anime figures.

    5. I used to collect anime figures when I was younger. They ended up lost because of me moving so many times and negligence. I wish I still had them! I didn't even know BJD's existed at that time. Now I only have BJD's but I wouldn't turn down an irresistible anime figure. I find them to be completely different things. To me the figures are a work of art to admire whereas BJD's are a work of art to customize and play with. While both can be used for photography, the figure has MUCH more limits.

    6. I used to have anime figures but have since packed them away since I started collecting bjd's I also collect anime and manga but not as much anymore since my bjd's usually come first nowadays.I do however still collect Japanese and Chinese antiques whenever I can find them in thrift stores.

    7. I'm a packrat, I collect a bit of everything. Action figures, Playmobil people, fashion dolls (Monster High, Bratzillaz and Pullip) and porcelain dolls as well as BJD. The BJD are the only ones who arent confined to display cases and stands, though. They're the ones I actually 'play' with, photographing, dressing and posing them. The other collections are more like pretty decor (even though I did name the Pullips and the porcelain dolls...) while the BJD are personifications of my original characters.

    8. I just started collecting BJDs. I also collected other dolls and figures before. I am trimming them down due to lack of space and funds needed for more BJD stuff. Fortunately, my husband and son are also figure collectors. So I still get to enjoy their Kotobukiya and Mcfarlane toy collection, etc. They do not care about my BJD s though.

    9. At first I was only into the BJD hobby. I was inactive for a long while and thought of leaving the hobby. But everytime I tried to sell my dolls I'd end up falling in love with them again.. or even buy new dolls because I went to look at them *facepalm* Then halfway along the way I fell in love with Sylvanian Familes.. and then action figures (Figmas etc) and then Monster High Dolls!! I've always told myself my pocket can't handle more than one collection but I always end up finding more things to collect T^T

    10. I'm a collector packrat myself. I've dabbled in a bit of everything and my collector habits vary depending on what I'm currently into. Like, a year ago it was Monster High, now that that has slowed down a little I'm back into BJDs. Between my husband's model/lego collections and my horde of dolls/figures/statues my poor house is running out of room ^^'

    11. Before getting my first BJD, I actually bought a lot of figures. They're cheaper, that's true, but when you accumulate the price of them all, well.. they're pretty expensive too. That's what pretty much prompted me to buy my first BJD (the sudden realization that I could actually afford/save up for a BJD!).
These days, I'm limiting my figure spending since I'm planning on adding another BJD into my collection this year. But, to answer the question, I suppose I'm a little bit of both. x'D

    12. I guess I took a very logical progression. I started out with blind box figures, moved on to more poseable figures, then I got a mio pullip, now on to bjds. For me it's the customization options and the more realistic proportions that really attracted me to bjds. I will still be collecting some figures but usually I just admire my boyfriend's ones...or steal them and put them in dresses when he's not looking.

    13. Lately I've been looking at re-ment sets and trying to determine if they would be the right size for an MSD. It's hard to tell if they would be the right scale. Does anyone buy re-ment sets for your MSDs?

    14. Why not both? :D Both, both is good

    15. I collect Monster High, anime figures, some cool Barbies, and BJD, of course--although less BJD because they're so expensive. XD

    16. Well, there were figures around before there were BJDs, so I had a bunch of all kinds of figures... and other types of dolls, before BJDs. I still pick up some now and then, but I really enjoy the BJDs more. You can just do more with them! The figures all just sit about.

    17. I have anime figures, kawaii good, and now BJD's

    18. I started collecting other kinds of dolls (mainly Pullips and Isuls), gacha and small blind box anime figures (though I usually cheat and buy the ones that the stores have already opened so I'm sure to get the figure I want... XP It's also much cheaper than trying my luck at getting the figure I want) after getting into BJDs. I especially love collecting animal gacha figures as those are usually really cute and surprisingly detailed for something so tiny, plus they make good pets for smaller dolls.

    19. It's mainly BJDs for me, though I do have a handful of figures and do plan to purchase more. Lucky for me, I only like having figures of specific characters I like, thus there is a smaller number of figures I actually want. On the other hand, dolls end up taking more of my wallet and my attention, thanks to their customization options.

    20. I have a pvc Madoka figurine from Good Smile. There's also a few Nendos of her that I want to get. I also have two GKs, an Elin Mystic and some mermaid type girl. Both of them are unpainted/assembled because I haven't gotten around to getting stuff to clean the mold release and some putty for putting the parts together. And because I prefer to paint outdoors and snowstorms and rain make that not very fun. ahaha...

I have no intention of stop collecting that stuff once I purchase a bjd, although I made myself promise not to buy more GKs until I finish the ones I have. They fill different needs for me and I have quite the disposable income. Figurines fill that instant gratification itch and give me something pretty to look at- I only buy a figurine if I love the character. GKs are cheaper than bjd dolls, smaller than my ideal doll size, and fill my desire to customize and paint something pretty while still arriving quickly. BJDs give me that impressive size and something I can play with after I'm done customizing it. It's something I can actually 'play with' as opposed to leaving on a shelf. It's more than just a way to satisfy my desire for character goods and delicious eye candy, but that doesn't mean I'll ever stop wanting GKs and pvcs.
