Contentious doll names - gods and so on.

Feb 11, 2008

    1. The only problem with that line of logic is that both Jesus AND Mohammed are extremely common names. Maybe not in your corner of the world, but in mine you can't throw a Tecate beer can without hitting a Jesus.
Mohammed is an extremely popular name in Islamic and Northern African countries.

    2. There's no problem with my logic. If you read my post you'll see that Christians and Muslims have a problem with inanimate objects being called Jesus or Mohammed. They are common names for people in some cultures, but taboo names for anything else.

    3. Kids, name your doll ANYTHIG you want. Don't let a bunch of bullies and busybodies pressure you into going vanilla. But DO be aware if you're aiming for obnoxious you will get comments.

As for being stared at, I NEVER wanted to be like everyone else anyway.

    4.

Last time I checked, bullies and busybodies weren't willing to debate an issue. Guess all us bullies and busybodies are acting out of character, huh?

Of course someone can and should name their doll whatever they want...but a little bit of cultural understanding and respect is important too. Even if it only saves that person from looking like an idiot.

    5. I have no problem with Jesus or Mohammed. They are pretty common names in my corner of the world. They pronounce Jesus "Hey-zeus."

I tend to name my dolls after characters in books or TV shows... or actors. Now that I think about it... they are all named after fictitious characters. I even have a Puck (Robin Goodfellow) because I'm a theater nerd... that's in homage to the Bard.

On a side note... I dated a guy named Damian so I have no problem with that either. To be fair he's like 3-4 years older than the movie.

    6. lets see, i woulednt and i dont think anyone here name my doll hitler. no questions asked.

    7. In my opinion, a name is a very hollow thing. Sometimes a name just feels right when it comes off the tongue and you just want to name something that. People might be offended but, then again, I can't change who I am and what I like just to make people happy.

For instance, I have a labret, and it actually offends my aunt a great deal that I would 'do such a thing to the body god created for me'. Me, personally, I'm an atheist, so I don't believe any religious names have power. It may offend somebody if I name a doll something, but everything is bound to offend somebody somehow.

I believe that if you want to name your doll something, go for it. I may not like it, other people may not like it, but, in the end, it is your choice and yours alone. Do what feels right.

    8. I think that the doll, once you begin the modding process, wigs and creating, unless you have a specific idea in mind, will help you figure out their name.

I would have no problem at all with naming a doll Morgan LaFey, Freya, or the name of any god or goddess if that ends up being a big part of the doll's personality.

    9. I have no problem with religious names - My sister named her doll Persephone after the goddess she worships and I am looking for a doll to represent Skadi - the goddess doesn't seem to mind, we keep winning small amounts on the lottery when we give Persephone the tickets to hold for luck!

I don't think I'd name my doll after serial killers or the other sick fcks that pepper our society beause I would hate to give them one teensy shot of fame or recognition.

    10. The only name I have ever had that really related to a god was "Indraneel" for a horse character. The name means "blue as Indra", a deity of war and storms. This name suited the character well, as he was a blue roan horse. I was tempted to give him a lightning bolt scar, but chose against it. This name though is an actual given name in India, so I wouldn't imagine it would be considered a blasphemy.

I hate when someone does something awful and soils their name. Adolf is a good example. It simply means noble wolf. Hitler has gone and ruined it. I am from Jewish German heritage and my grand father remembers calling his immigrant grandfather the pronounciaton "A-D". No one knows his real name, but my grandfather suspects his name might have been Adolf and he had stopped using it due to it being spoiled by the dictator. We do not know exactly, as he doesn't remember his grandfather too well. That may have just been his name.

Another example: Colombine. The name is now synonymous with school shootings. I heard it in a song, and the band didn't seem like the kind to invoke such a name just to be edgy. Turns out it's quite possibly one of the most beautiful types of flower I have ever seen. It's a pity I'd feel wrong using it as it's a beautiful name and a beautiful flower. I might be quite tempted to use it as a doll name if I didn't think it would offend.

I guess these days there's just so many ways to offend people due to diversity. I certainly avoid it, but it could easily be difficult.

    11. Actually, I have seen a doll named Jesus.... it's pronounced the spanish, but still....

And I have no names that I could have a problem using based on morals... I'm not very religious, and do have quite a few characters that share names with arch angels just cause I think the names sound pretty. And I love the roman gods and goddesses names and have a whole set of characters named after them xD

To me, no name if off-limits!

    12. The only reason why I wouldn't name a doll Jesus is because I'm not exactly partial to the sound/flow of the name. lol That's all.. Might name one Jesus with the Spanish pronunciation because I think it's kinda cool, but not the English one.

Plus, it'd be annoying to defend.. Especially if I don't even really like the name to begin with. @____@

    13. First off, I'm going to say, name your babies whatever you wish!

Personally, I don't name my dolls based off of..gods. At least, not yet. Nor do I take offense when I see dolls named after said gods. I just dont see the point in getting worked up about someone naming their doll "Jesus" Or the like. XD Its a waste of time to get all worked up over those things.

I wouldn't name my doll after those names because..well, I feel like I am missing out on the dolls orginality by naming them after said god. This just makes me feel like I am trying to embody the said god into the doll, and I want the doll to come alive itself and to take on its own character (Or from my muses).

I second what la-toxic-schrei said, it would be annoying to defend. I don't want to deal with the people who would get overly anal about it or something. But thats how I am, unfortunately. XD

Now, if I were to get a doll and they claimed to want that name..then well, I'd just go with it, if it was really their personality. But I have no characters that way.

    14. some people choose names simply to get a reaction. I think it's a silly way to get attention. there are plenty of people however who choose a name because they like it.
I personally wouldn't give any of my dolls muslim names SIMPLY because of my hubby to be and the war. it's a sensitive issue. I don't have any problems with people naming a doll whatever they want. I just think it's silly to choose a name just for attention.

    15. I'm not Christian or Muslim, so the names don't carry any meaning for me whatsoever, therefore - I should be totally entitled to use them without fear of causing controversy.

If others find that disrespectful, that's fine, good luck to 'em. I don't. Therefore, the opinions of others are in no way going to influence my decision if I like the name.

Good thing I don't like the names Jesus and Mohammed, huh? Wouldn't wanna cause any of that crazy controversy!

    16. I recently thought of another type of "contentious" names that people might give their dolls...from the sacred to the profane.

This does happen IRL...I went to school with someone who had a family member named Randy Hoar. There are a number of names coming from India that contain the syllable "porn." In the context of an English-speaking, slang-aware community, these names carry a certain kind of baggage, if you will.
Of course, the names I've mentioned would probably be acceptable to most people, because they're "real." But what if someone's streetwise doll had a nickname that contained profanity? What if someone's made-up name sounded like a not-for-family-consumption word? I'm not necessarily thinking of anything that would be fully inappropriate for a forum like DoA: names like Hexapeen or Billy the Tit don't violate the forum's language standards but still contain questionable content.

So how do you feel about names that push "clean language" boundaries, rather than religious ones?

    17. I don't care one way or another. It's the owner's decision to name it whatever they want, but I would think they were immature if they were only doing it for 'shock value'.

    18. It is funny how names can change perspective. My brother was adopted with the name Richard (my parents hated it due to Nixon) and gave him the name Damien after St. Damien of the Lepers. Which is what we called him until the movie - after which he insisted we call him by Richard or a variation there of. Interesting how quickly the way a name is perceived can change, is it not?

Anyway, back on topic - I have called one of my dolls Bast because that fits her character. She is supposed to be a former High Priestess who became the physical embodiment of the Goddess herself. I don't think this is in any way disrespectful, and I can't think of a single name that would be disrespectful to call any of my dolls. That being said, there are ones I definetely wouldn't use but that is a matter of personal preference - like Oliver Cromwell. ;)

    19. I don't think it's offensive to name your doll anything except for deliberate names of people who are murderers, rapists, etc, because that shows a lot of disrespect to the victims. Gods or whatever, well, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, right? As long as you aren't trying to provoke anyone, it should be fine. That said, I think people should consider if this would be an offensive name before naming their doll, especially if you're going to post it on forums and stuff.

    20. But you would cause a controversy whether you are a Muslim or not, because unless you live under a rock, everyone knows that the name Mohammed carries with it a lot of baggage; some of it religious, some of it cultural, all of it vocal and easily offended. To use that name for something as trivial as a doll is to invite controversy in and to make itself at home...how could that be a good thing?

What's wrong in showing respect to the beliefs of others *_* When did it suddenly be alright to cause as much controversy as you like and damn the feelings of others? I was brought up to respect other people's wishes and to be polite but firm with people whether I agreed with them or not. Since I know it would be offensive to a large group of people, certain names for dolls are off-limits.
