Contentious doll names - gods and so on.

Feb 11, 2008

    1. Personally I find names fascinating especially creative ones. For example my horse's name is Sora which means "life" in a made up language from one of my favorite book series. When I name dolls (model horses, pets, etc) I always come up with a name that means something to ME, often after some obscure book I've read. Some of those names are likely to mean something to some religion that I don't even know about but that was not my objective. Currently my only doll is named Damane (pronounced dom-ON-ee) which in the same made up language means "leashed one" because it means something to me and has to do with her character.

Like some people I tend to look more at the character of the doll than the existent meaning of the name. I couldn't care less if someone named their doll Jesus or Satan, however if they named their doll Mike and created an obviously Hitler-like (or Jesus-like) character for them I would be more likely to be offended (unlikely though anyway as I'm really not easily offended)

    2. That's a nice name. If I'm not mistaken i think there is a japanese word 'sora'. Not sure what it means though. ^__^

    3. Well, I myself tried to promise I wouldn't go for a food name, or an animal name. Yet my girls are named Robin and Eclair.
A friend of mine has a doll named Ira, who's supposed to come from a Muslim family, and I can't help but tease her about it no matter how well it fits (Ira is...a Jewish name).

    4. Does anyone know any good creative doll names?

    5. Robin and Eclair is really nice...i've read some books where the character's name is Eclair and of course One Piece's(manga) Robin. ^__^

    6. I know that the main character in Kingdom hearts is named Sora and that there is a type of bird called a Sora. I didn't know that it was a Japanese word though, I'll have to look it up =)

    7. Now that you mention it, yeah. Never played that game before, but I heard they say it's really interesting.

    8. We won't go into the fact that my dog is named Hermes.

Personally, I'm agnostic, so religious names mean little if anything to me. For all I care someone can name their doll "God". However, my boyfriend is pretty religious, so I do tend to shy away from names that might offend him (Satan, God, Lucifer, Jesus etc.). It just seems like the polite thing to do since I don't really care.

I'm more apt to avoid names I hear on lots of real females. For example, I grew up in a town where there were 25 Kimberlys in my school. That killed that name for me. I also couldn't name a doll Christina because that's one of my best friend's names. I would get all my friends so confused. Same goes for Selena (which I happen to love).

I find myself searching DOA to make sure my doll ends up with a uniqueish name. For example, my current incoming doll is going to be named Corby. I've seen a few Corbins, but no other girl Corbys. (As I type this, I'm sure someone has used the name and I just didn't see it in a search).

    9. Yeah, I realize that, as in the area I am in Christianity is... "the" religion, it was the only one I could use as a good example. Which is why I added in any currently worshiped diety in order to offset that. XD As for me, I do still worship the Egyptian deities so I guess my own argument became invalid.

    10. Anything can be offensive to anyone, but anything you're naming a doll will not be offensive to everyone. That being said, there are some names that hold such a stigma that I'd be wary of using them... people have mentioned Hitler and Osama bin Laden as examples. I think the more recent the atrocity, the more wary you should be of using the name of someone directly involved.

As for gods/goddesses/mythological/religious figures, you're bound to offend someone, but I feel that these names are less so offensive than the name of say Charles Manson, mostly because as figures we probably have never met they are more symbolic in our minds. We attach these names significance, but each one of us can attach it differently. Whereas with someone like Hitler... that's much less prevalent. Besides, like others have mentioned, the names of religious figures are commonly used for children. If you can name your child Jesus or Kali, why not your doll? As long as the character is unrelated or sensitive to the religion itself (if it's not...well...do you really need to show that off?), I think it's perfectly fine.

Then again, I'll be naming a pair of dolls Shiva and Kali in the future. That's just how I roll.

    11. In all honesty, I do think it is just a name. I , for one, have a doll that will be coming named Xaphan and my boy Lachrimae who will be arriving in a few days. Xaphan is the demon who thought it'd be a nice idea to start fire in Heaven and now runs the furnace in Hell. It isn't for the shock factor of "wow. you have a demon doll." I certainly don't want any negative feelings about that, but it certainly goes with his backstory. So.
The only way I would have issues with someone's doll name is if they had the audacity to name thier doll something horrible and haneous. Such as Hitler, Stalin, Dr. Mengele, or anything of that sort. Even names of serial killers (Jeffrey Dahmer, Ed Gein, Ted Bundy) can be a questionable realm of names to step into.
Gods and Goddesses,Demons and Entities; sure. Dolls named after things of the like stated above; NO.

    12. I like names that don't quite match the character's personalities. Even though they say that you shouldn't do that when you write (forget where I read it), I still like it, because I think it works more than one might think.

    13. I agree with VonMonStar that names that have a horrible real life pasts should be avoided, as long as the memory of these is still vivid and surviving. I would not use a name like that (Hilter, Dahmer etc.) - just imagine, you show your doll to someone and he or she is a relative of a victim or something like that - it would be so sad.

On the other side I have no problem if the grisly deeds are gone long enough for not touching others personally & directly, for instance I would not object to Vlad or Nero.

Names like Lucifer and other gods/demons names I find a bit overused and thereformostly boring. Plus:The more dramatic a doll is, the simpler I would choose the name, but thats just personal taste, I guess.

    14. I don't mind when people named their dolls after some god or spiritual or religious name but I would avoid not to name my doll that coz I thought to name something after a god or religious it's kind of delicate/complicate topic.

And just in case you come back on this topic SoraSoul and kirei101

Sora from KH name after a japanese words "sora" which means sky while "riku" means land or shore and "kairi" means sea or ocean. 3 of them are main protagonist in the game. (I also name my doll Sora and Riku ^^)

    15. If a person is nice and has a good sense of humor with an open mind they'll usually be accepting about it. That said I think everyone has their line that once crossed can mean trouble. "Satan" may upset someone, or make them laugh. Names like "Manson" or "Dahmer" may sound evil because of historical events but there are a lot of people still running around with those last names who refuse to let those events ruin them (I went to school with a Dahmer XD). Those names have historical roots way before the people who made them famous, and they'll be around for long after. Except for "Hitler" I think everyone changed their name out after that one... XD Sorry, I have to joke sometimes!

And this is coming from someone who has pets named Nebuchadnezzar and Caligula. *Just noticed that "Caligula" has been brought up a lot. The original guy was nicknamed Caligula (his real name is Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus!) as it meant "little boots" and was an affectionate name given to him as an infant. :)*

    16. I think as long as the doll is not made to make fun of, or represent the person it is named after, which would definitely insult people, it should be fine to name them whatever you wish...
Even though naming them something like a cussword would simply display how immature and rude you are.

I personally wouldn't name my dolls after any religious people, though I might name my doll say, Loki, or Athena.

    17. I wouldn't give my doll a J name or a D name unless it really, really fit because J names are for my electronics, and D names signify a specific group of characters from a story I'm working on. I'd confuse myself if my doll had a D name *_*

Personally, I think dolls should have unique names, and being named after spirits and dieties is one way to get that, and goes with my idea of dolls being not quite human. I wouldn't name a doll after someone I know though, or a common name in my area like "Sarah" or "John" because I think it'd be really weird to meet a doll with my name.:sweat

    18. Interesting, i love naming things off of gods and so on. Actually I had picked a name out for my doll but it was slightly changed and it was also the name of one of my characters in a game ( and a large reason I bought her in the first place) only to come on DOA go to the discussion area for that type of doll to only be smacked in the face with the coincidence that someone had the same exact doll as in color and sculpt named with that name.
I also thought it would be weird if my user name and doll name were the exact thing.
In most cases, people on a large don't follow or look into the names of dietys in culture's except the main ones that everyone tends to know.
More often then not, I get asked if I like Rihanna a lot since, I of course named a character after her (head smack, truthfully i had to look up how to spell her name since I honestly don't care for her). I actually would find the naming of a doll after a diety to be a conversational piece and point to break the ice.
Like Oh you named your doll after ___?
Why yes i did, not many people know about them!
I know ____ has such fascinating stories and whatnot.

    19. Dude, Loki and Athena ARE religious people (so to speak, if you consider a god a person). XD My issue is not with people using the names of deities, not at all. It's with people forgetting they aren't just myths (to many people). :P

    20. So I didn't think this would be an issue with me at all. Because I had never planned to do it. But I got my Bobobie babies tonight and (yes, I'm one of those crazy muse talking people) the boy in the set kept mentioning Frigga. I knew I had heard that name before, so I looked it up.

I can't, obviously, name him that. It's a girl name. So I have -temporarily- named him Freyr, hoping to appease him. But the girl was quite happy with the name she had earlier chosen for herself, which was what led me to Freyr in the first place. It had kept bouncing around in my head.

Beyla. And so now, though I'm nervous as all get out because they are named after Norse gods and their servants, it is what they demanded.

And I'm a 50% Christian, by the way. I just happen to believe that there are certain entities out there still existing. :3
