1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Copying company outfits

Jun 23, 2013

    1. copying for personal use is always allowed. It starts go get you in trouble when you try to sell it for a profit.

    2. This has been an interesting thread to read through and hear different people's opinions on the matter!

The reason why I'm reviving this old topic is because I have an outfit in mind that I'm planning on making for my new girl who I'm currently waiting for. Thing is, it was a limited outfit from LUTS. If it was still available I may have bought it, but seeing as it's sold out that's no longer a possibility. I'm not intending to copy it exactly, but rather make my own version.

I believe there is no problem making your own version of an outfit or even copying an outfit exactly. I think the only problem is when you aim to create an exact replica to sell for a profit. As long as it's for personal use you're not hurting anyone.

    3. I'm a cosplayer and make cosplays for my dolls. This involves copying stuff ALL the TIME. Some cosplayers are so nit-picky it's insane (down to the dye used). It is a skill.
There are only so many ideas out there (tunes, plots, shirt designs, whatever).
Plus, corporate jerks use this kind of thing to make life a misery just for a buck (where the original creator is LONG gone). The Jayne hat (or as it's now known, the Adam Baldwin hat) from Firefly is a good example of that - and an instance of Fox showing us all who the Alliance actually is LOL That's a fair-use pattern (Peruvian style hat) w/a certain color combination that the show's creators (you know, JOSH WHEDON) either grabbed at a thrift store or got some little grandma to knit (can't remember which). The episode it was in never aired (see the part about Fox being the Alliance). The FANS made that hat the symbol of the show, after Fox killed it. Then 10 years later, when ThinkGeek wanted to license the pattern, Fox ALL of a SUDDEN decided to threaten & bully Etsy shops over selling it as a Jayne hat (the only thing they could control - that NAME). So Adam Baldwin, big damn hero that he is, stepped up & lent his name to it & Fox couldn't do a thing. LOL I made one for my doll & probably will sell them at some time in the future. No creator harmed here.
      So. There's that LOL

    4. At least I am going to take all advantage of the company-made outfits when I start doing a little more complicated pieces for my doll. I am not going to sell them or claim that they are anything else than a copy so there is nothing wrong with that.

    5. I am happy the thread has resumed, slightly. I have been thinking about it quite a bit recently, as I am sewing quite a lot. And as someone once said, roughly: "try to make it before you purchase it", when it comes to doll items.
But it was more in terms of general items - Such as your doll needing a coat, so you try and make one before you go around searching for one to buy.
I have adopted that mentality. It just becomes a problem when you instead see something you like and go "I can make that! ...wait... is that not copying/ripping them off?":huh?:

@vauhtikatti You mean to use a purchased piece as a template..?

    6. I thought I had posted here, but I guess not. I have no problem with it as long as you do not claim the design to be your own and if you sell the item declare that it is a copy. Odds are most of us can just do items inspired by other looks and not recreate items so well that it would be hard to tell them from the originals. Knock-offs are standard in the real fashion industry. As long as there is no misrepresentation as far as doll items go, it is fine with me. And if totally for your own use, go for it!

    7. As someone in college and therefore unable to sink a bunch of money into the hobby, especially on top of the money necessary to just merely own a doll, honestly I have no remorse for copying any doll outfits. I even do so for clothes for myself (like, my own person) actually.

Granted, it wouldn't feel mortally okay to make a business out of it. As well, the outfits I make always turn out a bit different anyway, there's usually always something I change to suit my personal taste and there's always some degree of substituting as all I have is scraps and recycled fabric to work with.

    8. I'm not going to use purchased pieces but just use their webpage photos as inspiration, concerning decoration, pockets, ribbons and so on. So the product will not be same.

    9. I personally don't see any issue with this from either side. I've been in fashion design for years now and I don't think I'd have any issue if someone made a personal copy of one of my designs. I get it, this stuff is expensive and it's a tough economy right now. As long as they don't rip off my design for profit more power to the little guy.

I can also remember at one time I fell head over heels in love with a shirt and made my own version of it for my doll many years ago in the hobby. Like everyone has said, if you don't re-sell the design it's fine.
