1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Correlation of Size and Price

Aug 15, 2008

    1. That being said, given comparing accross companies is plain wrong, IS there a company where the (no-limited, same skintone) smaller dolls are more expensive? I've never seen one. Okay they're not a LOT cheaper, but they are still cheaper.

    2. I was suprised to find out that a Delf Lishe and a MNF Lishe are nearly the same price (edit: thanks salamander). But when I thought about it, the MNF is finer by nature, in that it's smaller.

I agree with many people here that the work that goes into making the dolls is a bigger factor than the materials. Just think, all the limbs need to be drilled by someone. An AA Shi's dead straight, large limbs don't seem too difficult. But think of drilling a tiny's limbs.

I'm inclined to believe that some companies price their dolls by size for our expectations. Maybe they make more of a profit out of the large than the tiny after all?

This may not be fact, but I think I heard that AA 60cms and AA 30cms were the same price. Can anyone confirm?

    3. Do you think prices and sizes of BJDs are correlated?Within company, yes. The bigger the doll, the more expensive. But it's going to be company scaled. Some companies sell their SDs for under 400$, while other companies have Tinies for over 400$. It's all within company.

Do you think smaller dolls should be less expensive? Why or why not?
Not really. The smaller the doll, the harder it is to sculpt, cast, what not. Just like with clothes making, the bigger your doing it, the more room for unnoticable error.

Would you pay more for a smaller doll than a bigger doll?
Actually, although I'm now selling her, my puki pipi (tiny) was more expensive than my bbb mei (msd). I didn't buy the mei for myself, admittedly, but she was on my wish list for a long, long time. She was 40$ less.

    4. Sorry, did you mean "size" or "price" here?
The reason they are so close in price is that Luts have dropped their prices to reflect the Won's fall, while Fairyland is still carrying the MNF dolls at basically the same price they were 2+ years ago. It's a weird situation with that split between companies and a one-sided price drop; when MNF and DF were being sold by the same company there was a difference of about $150-200.

I wanted to look up that AA blip for you, but apparently their company is on hiatus!

Raisallie, which companies have tinies for over $400? The only company I know that comes close is Volks--but the *retail* price of their Yo-SDs is only around $350--still a pretty big price tag, but if you're thinking of the $500+ price tags you see on them, that's the secondhand resale market. As I said previously, should we consider Luts as being a really expensive company just because Breakaways sell for very high prices secondhand, or should we look at the original from-company price and see that they're pretty middle-of-the-road? Ditto for Volks.

    5. I was thinking of this a few days ago. I eventually want to get a tiny, like a PukiPuki for their cuteness, but they cost as much as an SD or MSD-sized doll would. I wonder if I can consider this getting less for my money's worth? And they're just TINY, I mean, I've heard of some that are only 4in tall! Why do I want to pay $300 for a itty bitty doll? I don't care how known, or high quality the company is, it makes no sense.

I would still like one, but the price is odd. I can understand the differences with 43cm and 60cm price, but why, exactly am I paying MSD price for something so tiny?!

    6. Pukis are only $140, plus up to $70 more if you add faceups and the extra plate. The fullsets are the ones that are $300... o_O

    7. Hello ^^
I think it all depends on which company is manufacturing the dolls~!

    8. I actually had people ask me about this with my dolls: "Why is that tiny Puki as much as your bigger doll?"

I like to answer it this way: "Smaller is often more difficult. Look at dollhouse furniture... a 1/12 scale chair costs the same as a real chair!" And we all know those tiny shoes are as much as our own shoes, and ofter more!

    9. Haha, the reason why nearly all my dolls are 60cm and up is because of the price/size correlation. I couldn't ever get my mind around the price of tinies, especially in the beginning, when only Volks was producing them. When pukis came out, I was just completely boggled that people would pay that much for them. O_O While I do appreciate that a lot more work must go into designing something so small, my mind seems to automatically calculate cost per volume, so, I shall still be sticking to the big boys. XD

    10. Do you think prices and sizes of BJDs are correlated?

I think they should be mostly correlated. This means that big dolls from the same company should probably be more expensive than small dolls. However, there are exceptions which I will list in the next question.

Do you think smaller dolls should be less expensive? Why or why not?

      Yes, with the following exceptions:
      -Different company
-Rare/uncommon sculpt (Limited etc.) vs normal big doll
      -Increased mobility
      -Better Materials
      -Better face-up
-More equipment comes with the small doll

A small doll should be less expensive than the exact same large BJD unless something changes. I don't see why I should pay more to have less doll unless the smaller doll is something special. I make exceptions across companies for sculpt, mobility, color etc. It's hard to compare a SD from company A to an MSD from company B.

Would you pay more for a smaller doll than a bigger doll?

Only if I love it that much more. :D
(I was looking at Island Doll's Ellie, but got swept away by some of the Iplehouse JID that had cuter sculpts.)

    11. I'm willing to pay more for quality, regardless of size. If the tiny has better sculpting, jointing, resin, etc...than a bigger doll, I'd pay more for it.
