Curating your collection of tinies?

Jan 26, 2023

    1. Hi everyone! I've been collecting bjds for a long time now, and have exclusively tinies at the moment. I'm trying to be more intentional with the dolls I do and don't keep, and I'm seeing that some I just don't play with as much as others. Generally if I'm really into a doll it's because I've really seen a lot for them and they've developed a personality in my mind. It helps if I give them a faceup in my own style too I think.

I am challenging myself to do more sewing and crafts for my dolls, maybe even some furniture and room boxes. With tiny dolls, at some point they get a bit too tiny to sew for and I'm finding dressing my little DHS Pocca is such a challenge I often don't pick her up!

I'm also finding what's a good tiny size doll for me. I think 10-15 cm range works well, they fit nicely in my hand, I can travel with them, etc.

How do you curate your collection of tinies? I'm asking in the tiny bjd discussion because I find that collecting tiny bjd does feel a bit different from collecting larger bjd. They're just so snack size and multiply so quickly

    2. Personally, most of my tinies are children or child-like beings. The few more mature ones I have have only stuck around because they have some reason to do so. An example being that my Harucasting Eorin doesn't really "fit in" with my other children (tinies) as he is very tall and skinny in comparison. But his character is a robot so being outside of my "norm" is fine since he isn't supposed to exactly fit in.

I would suggest maybe finding your "norm" or your "preference". What are specific attributes you like about your tinies? Even things like jointing. Then you can look at your collection to see which do and do not have those preferences. Those that do not you can figure out what drew you to them in the first place. Curating isn't easy for me personally but I can at least figure out what aspects I do and do not like about specific scales.

    3. I think cuteness is definitely important for my tiny dolls. But the biggest determining factor is what kinds of clothes I can make for them. I have 2 Hanon Satomi sewing books and both have tiny bjd sewing patterns. I'm not into the idea of sewing for Blythes, but other small bjds are welcomed!

I bought 3 pennybox tiny centaurs. I wanted at least 1 centaur in my crew, so getting 3 tiny ones just makes me so happy!! I also love fantasy, so I can't wait to come up with cute fantasy outfits for them!

Also, dioramas for tiny dolls feels more achievable lol

    4. I don't curate it really, other than ha avoiding dolls of around 8 inches because, for so me inexplicable reason, I just don't do anything with them other than redress them occasionally then leave them sat on the shelf un touched.

My tinies in general don't get as much attention as my larger dolls (true for off-topic dolls as well) since the smaller the doll, the less inclined I am to sew for them, and I do sew for the larger sizes. While space issues are a big factor for larger dolls, I can always squeeze in another tiny.

    5. They do tend to multiply! My tinies are a mixed bag, but for me I tend to lean towards the cute anime aesthetic. I tend to try to limit how many of a mold/style I get, so I don't have same face syndrome. Other wise my only limit is currently costs.
I've started collecting more of the off topic tiny bjd dolls because they're affordable and still easy to customize.

    6. This is actually super helpful to think about! I'm realizing my fav tiny (DHS Avery) is double jointed, has a sleeping head, and custom faceup everything about her has been slowly customized to unveil her personality. I def love the ease of double jointed posing and I'm noticing less time spent with my single jointed dolls. My domadoll kkotmu I was drawn to by her melancholy face, but I haven't done much with her so it's either time to change something up or rehome her. I find my super tiny tinies, like DHS Avery, while I love the poseability of the double joints, 5cm means I'm always afraid of losing her! So maybe that's too small for me to actually enjoy having with me? Not sure yet!

But thanks for the suggestion! It def made me realize that good posing was important for me because it made them less stiff. I used to not love the look of double joints on dolls but since I tend to clothe mine fully it doesn't seem to matter as much these days

    7. I have both the Hanon satomi books and they are sooooo good. I've made a lot from the first one, need to challenge myself to do more from the second one :) the Blythe size stuff is a good fit for dolls in the 20-30cm slimmer body range I find.

and yes doing dioramas or houses for smaller dolls is definitely easier (up to a certain tininess at least)

    8. Yes I have dolls like that too where I just leave to me on the shelf once I dress them! I wish I could get into msd dolls, they'd be so much easier to sew for :0 I've had unoa, Elfdoll minis, and other mature msds but none ever really fully connected sadly

    9. Yes I also try to avoid the same face syndrome! I love for them to look different but kind of still possibly in the same realm? I've also been getting some off topic ones but mostly because they are fun fantasy ones that just don't have articulated wrists and ankles

    10. While my adoption has definitely slowed from its heyday, I'm still adding new recruits to the troop, I'm just a little more picky. What I have found is that I tend to gravitate toward certain company lines and have not experimented as much as I have in the past with new companies. I'm actually the opposite of Teddy...with the exception of Moira, my larger dolls get little attention...it's all about the tinys, and I've only brought two BJDs larger than KID size home in the last ten years. While I do bring home the occasional tiny-tiny, the Yo size has really asserted dominance here in recent years, I find it's the easiest size for me to design and sew for and tends to spark my creativity more strongly. My group is non-sleeping (even my Elfdoll Olivia had her eyes opened) and mostly non-anthro. I only have a handful of WS dolls, I tend to adopt NS or Tan kiddos for the most part. I used to avoid duplicating faces, but that ship sailed a few years ago. Generally if I do have duplicates, they're different resin colors or styled very differently from each other.

They all get names and I spend time finding their look and personality. While certain dolls get a lot of attention and travel time (Fee and Moira, for example), it comes in waves for the others, generally centered around getting ready for a show or a presentation. The evils of having a 60-70 hour workweek.

    11. I think for me ‘character’ and ‘personality’ seem to play a huge part in what I hold onto and what I rehome regarding tinies. Those with very definite personalities that I can somewhat identify with appear to be the ones that end up staying. Cuteness can play a part too but mainly it’s those that represent fragments of myself, I’ve come to realise, that get kept. Majority of them are also Fairyland tinies as posing is quite important to me although I do have a Luts tiny Delf, a Doll Chateau Carol (who can resist a crow type doll) and I have an Iplehouse KID on order.
I’ve also kept my Sleeping Elf/Tinybear little Moona, fat fairy Bonbon and fat fairy Coco out of sentimentality.

I don’t know what it says about me that majority of my tinies are either sulky, bratty or mischievous looking!

    12. Most of my BJDs are tinies, as I only collected tinies for my first 7 years in the hobby. More than half of those are mature tinies, with the rest being smaller dolls in-scale with them. My smallest are a pair of Fairyland Real Puki, and while I love them, they are super fiddly and I don't want anything smaller, or anymore that size. I'm more comfortable handling and sewing clothes for the dolls 20-30cm tall. My travel doll who rides in a pocket in my purse is the Puki Puki in my DoA avatar.

All of the tinies I have so far are part of the same community of characters, so any incoming doll has to fit with them scale-wise and have a character that connects in some way to at least one of the others. I prefer dolls that are double jointed, and like fantasy
characters, so I've become more particular about bringing in more single jointed dolls or humans.

I only recently ordered my first YoSD scale tiny to be a member of the same group as my few MSDs, and they are double jointed with pointy ears. The next one will also be a double jointed fantasy doll.

    13. I remember you troupe of tinies from back in the day clochette, and it seems to only have grown in number. I was thinking fondly of back when Carrie/tinybear was making wigs and releasing dolls like moona and bracken.

i love the Elfdoll tinies and constantly keep an eye out on the marketplace. They were such a wonderful balance between detail and playfulness.

I also got a domadoll kkotmu recently and while she's lovely and I adore her face mold I don't find myself reaching for her nearly as much!

Also love your pocket puki they're perfect for that purpose (woops just realized this was Leo phoenix haha)

    14. I absolutely feel you about dolls as fragments of yourself. I am a huge sucker for dolls with monolid eyes, small eyes, or specifically Asian modeled faces because it makes me feel so seen

I love tinybears fairies esp coco and bonbon! I'm getting a dreamhigh studio marigold soon so that will be filling the "more realistic body shape" part of my collection

    15. sewing for the teeny tinies is soooo finicky! But I still find myself obsessed with making clothes for them, probably because I enjoy suffering. My doll in the 20-30 range atm is dream high studio Hana Ichi and I'm in the process of sewing for her. It definitely helps that there's a lot of great patterns in that size

    16. I need to start curating but I wouldn't even know where to start. They all have their own charm and I can't bear to part with them. I always feel like I just haven't found their style yet. The only time tinies are cut out here is when I desperately need funding for my own health or that of my pets. I always regret selling them too but there's no helping it when you need the coins.

I don't really have this issue with anything above the 1/6th size so it must mean I really like tinies. I have the hardest time currently deciding on whether to flesh out a character in the 1/6th of the 1/8th size. They both have their pros and cons. I really do want to get into sewing though so perhaps the 1/6th are easier to start off with? But then again the tiny tinies break my heart with their teeny weeny outfits, it always makes my day. How does one even begin to decide?

    17. Yep, the troop is still active and recruiting, even all these years later, and except for one who went to help cheer up a sick young lady, they're all still with me. Luckily tinys don't take up much space ;) The Elfdoll tinys were such great dolls, it's a shame that Elfdoll isn't producing them any more. I miss the heydays when Ms. Cholong opened the Elfdoll store and you could just walk in and buy a doll or the parts you needed, or attend a party that she hosted there. Good times. Once in a while Carrie will put a custom Moona or one of the other sculpts up on her Etsy, but it's been a bit since the last one. The good change is that there are so many more tinys now...initially I was one of a very small circle of BJD folks who focused on tinys, and now there are more folks who understand the value that such a small amount of resin can hold. I do find that I tend to handle my anthro dolls less frequently as well, mostly because they are more bulky and challenging to clothe.

I so rarely see Kkotmus online, Dollshe Moon and Ru even less. I often get questions about dolls that travel to shows with me but no longer are available (like Elfdolls, OrientDolls, even the Pipos Po11s), and it's sad to have to tell folks that they aren't made any more. Even my darling Fee, who is my own "pocket" doll, was discontinued over a decade ago.
