Darker Skin Tones?

Nov 29, 2005

    1. I think they already made a tan DD. She was a limited Lost Angel character, a dancer I think. I saw an owner pic of her once, and she isn't VERY dark, but still darker then normal. An even darker DD would be great! :)

    2. There are literally a couple of tan Els for sale at eluts right now... >_>

    3. I airbrushed my sist with Mr. Color and although I did the best I could not to smudge anything and I coated repeatedly, it still wears in places. I don't mind because I have a unique Unoa. I don't care overmuch that it's not 'perfect'.

However, I can't wait to see how the 'tanned' Narindolls come out in person.

On a side note, so often photos really can't capture how a doll looks in person, especially with the tone and luminosity of the resin. It's so much fun to see all of these various tones in person!

And yes, I wish it were easier to make darkskinned dolls. I would certainly favor some greater diversity among my kids!

    4. I remember seeing a long time ago a mini SD that was partway through being converted to a dark skin doll. What was interesting was that the conversion was being done with official Volks dark-skin paint.

I think it was the girl from Celga.

    5. It's interesting to see that the Tanning El and Breakaway have not sold out on the Korean or Japanese sites, so perhaps tanned skinned dolls don't sell AS well in Asian countries.
But variety is the spice of life :).

    6. Ladyrixx- what an excellent and wonderful suggestion! I would love a new Obitsu or DD doll with beautiful very dark skin! Good thinking!8)

Ryochan- I would so love to see pics of your Unoa!

    7. It's ironic. The BJDs we love we can't get a tan doll in... and with 1/6th us fashion dolls we can't seem to get someone that isn't some deep tan that looks like skin cancer waiting to happen! *looks over at last summer's california barbie* o_o;

    8. I've wanted a sunlight skin msd for a while, but I've always felt nervous about it, because I've heard about problems. =/

A tan DD would certainly be neat to see, and I am sure there is interest in it! An indian one in a beautiful sari would be easy to fall in love with.

    9. Here's what Volks had on display next to the sunlight one-off auction doll at the LA mansion --

It really is about how the resin is affected. My friend's tanned Leekeworld Honey has lighter areas around her head and thigh because that's how she came out. It's also very time consuming to cast them because often times they need to recast areas that don't have even coloring.

    10. I'm waiting to see all the Latidoll Laches', including mine ^^; Also, am dying for tanskin El -_-; As to the topic, I agree with everyone who has mentioned lighter skinned dolls (especially white skin) are more desirable in general; Lati's whiteskin Pury sold out much more quickly than the normal skin boy or tanskin Laches. Traditionally, dolls have always been fair, except for some cultural/ethnic dolls. It's probably more about mainstream views of aesthetics than even about race. This coupled with the added difficulty of making darker-toned polyutherane resin dolls is....a very sad thing :-( I adore tanskin dolls, I am tanskin myself lol As for a very dark BJD, I would die to see a BJD that looks like Anthy (sp?) from Utena coupled with an Utena doll! Or those two that look like a male version of Anthy/Utena (forgot their names)!

Maybe I'll do it myself one day ;-p

    11. I don't think that women actually ingested Belladonna. I doubt that would make their skin pale in any case. I know it was put in the eyes (still is during eye exams) It dilates the pupils(making them very large so the good doctor can see inside) giving you a doe eyed look.

Also I applaud the asian ladies for confining themselves to powder and bird doo, since european women fancied making their faces pale with arsenic...

no we aren't going to talk about ancient eqyptians and croc dung contraceptives....

    12. I wanna have a tan girl or boy too 1 day..but I think I'd paint the doll with airbrush and cover it with msc..rather than the oneven spots..besides that this is 1 of those things were normal plastic wins it from good quality resin I geuss ^_^.

But I was wondering from what material is the head of Tyler wentworth Esme doll made? Cause it looks like very hard plastic but it looks very nice..I once bougth 1 out of curiosity ^_^.

I owned one and it was hard plastic. It was really really light weight. Nice skin tone and good make up. I think I perfer vinyl like DD in a dark shade (like Barbie) as oppossed to a plastic.

    14. Hello everyone,

First I would like to say that I am glad to be in this group, and second I want to say sorry for my soon to be rant.

I am kind of in the dumps over this because I just can't quite understand the lack of black dolls, and when I do see them, they are sooo unfairly priced :(

I am a woman of color and I would love to have a doll or two that are black, or as the listing says tanned.

Can someone tell me why these dolls cost so much, and if they are making the companies more money, then why don't they make more of them? I mean why do they put them in this limited thing? Again sorry for the rant I told you that it was gonna happen.

I guess what I would like to know is why is it that dolls with dark skin are so hard to find, and when I do finally see one, they only have a few of them, and I was also wondering what is whit the features on them??? I mean They make them very dark, and yet the features don't change fron the originall white ones?

Oh and just in case somone thinks that I am against the dolls being white, no not at all I have a beautiful white skinned Hound, and Miso from Dollmore, and my 2 60 cm Obitsu's, and I just adore them, but I would love to have a beautiful black doll that I could cherish just as much.

I know that a few of you will come back and say just get one with stronger features, and dye it, but as I said before I am new to this realm, and I would hate to ruin something as wonderful as any of these resin beauties.

And of course there is the second route, which is to find someone to do it for me, but what if thier idea of brown and mine are not the same ???

Hmmmm I know I am the craziest woman on here . Thanks for listening, and thanks for any help you guys my be able to give.

      Errica

    15. I feel da same way, I'm not a nice color all on my own but, I do think these dolls are bit over priced :vein: And I am upset about the whole 'one color, more dolls' deal. I've always wanted a dark skinned girl doll but like you said there arent many of them! *pout*

    16. From what I understand, it's that resin is hard to get an even skintone with using darker pigments, and it's more expensive, and takes longer. Because of this, most companies make tan dolls limited because of the extra expense and degree of difficulty.

So it's not that they don't want to make dolls with a darker skintone, it's just that it's a lot harder and more expensive to make them.

You could look into the Narae dolls- they offer a tan skintone as a standard (I think- though I don't know how dark the tan is), or save up and get a FCS from Volks, as they offer "Sunlight skintone". It's only available at the Tenshi no Sato workshop, though, so it's hard to come by and costs an extra fee to place an order through a middleman.

You could also just keep your eyes peeled from tan doll releases from companies. I believe Luts is planning on releasing more tan dolls.

    17. While I'm not sure about all the reasons there are so few dark-skinned dolls being made right now, I know that it's much harder to control the color distribution of darker resins during the casting process. I think I heard somewhere that some companies scrap 6 tan dolls for every one they sell. So I think they're limited because they're harder to make! The only unlimited tan dolls I know of are the Narin Dolls, which use a different resin composition than most companies, and Volks FCS, but I do hope that in the future someone will come up with a more reliable way of coloring resin, and make a whole rainbow of dolls!

    18. H'mm... thinking about the actual features....

I think the reason why they keep the original features is becuase- with the vast majority of dolls- they are intended to look stylised. They are not actually intended to look 'real' (although there are exceptions) and hence conform to the accepted 'look' that is alrady known and loved. Creating a whole new mould for these (as already mentioned) difficult dolls to make would be a huge risk- what if no-one bought them? True, preople most likle would, but not necessarily enough to make them financially viable. And that ind of market research is very hard to conduct effectively- often people will day that they would buy something.... and don't.....

    19. I read somewhere that for every tanned Hound made, 5 get scrapped. This is because getting the resin to dye evenly is VERY hard. That's also why you aren't supposed to sand tanned dolls... n_n; They might be a different shade if you sand them. XD
