1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Delayed Gratification- The Dreaded Wait

Jun 23, 2013

    1. Ohhh this is a very fun and interesting thread. And it's helping me wait for my doll. Kinda :)

How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?

This is my first BJD, my 4th doll, technically 2nd wait. My first 3 dolls are Pullips (don't judge me!). I ordered my first Pullip off Amazon. I wasn't sure which one I wanted for awhile but when I saw her I knew I had to have her. She was just so gorgeous and perfect and I have wanted to get into dolls for years and years so this was SO EXCITING. Now waiting for my first BJD is WORSE. Possibly because I feel like it's more of a... "serious" doll? For lack of a better word at the moment. And I think I might have discovered BJDs a little bit before Pullips. So... I don't know why the wait is more excruciating. Maybe because UPS tracking says it's supposed to show up on Monday but it arrived in town at around 1 AM this morning. I keep refreshing the page looking for the "package out for delivery" message :) I keep thinking the wait is worse because she costs more. Or she's bigger and there's a lot of work to do so she's basically going to be a project.

How do you wait for a doll?
I keep looking at pictures of the doll everywhere I can find them. She doesn't seem to be a popular doll so it's far and few between. I've also watched a couple unboxing videos specifically about her. And I even watched the same video twice. I've also been trying to figure out what she's going to wear when she gets here. I can't spend much money right now so I spent hours and hours going through eBay and Etsy looking for cheap fabric. But I don't have needles or thread so I wouldn't be able to afford those as well. So I started looking at my clothes because I always have a couple things that I don't want anymore and so she may be getting something made out of my old clothes using some crappy beading thread and a plastic canvas needle :) Or I may end up knitting her something. I've also been watching tons of BJD unboxing videos in general. I love seeing how happy people are when they first see their doll.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
Well, I wouldn't want to pre-order or order overseas because that can take a long time... I may be moving soon and who knows where I'll be living when the doll finally gets here. I move a lot so that makes long term planning difficult :(

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
It's silly and I already mentioned it... but the fact that UPS says the package is scheduled for delivery on Monday but it also says it arrived in my city at 1 AM this morning. Sometimes UPS is a day early but I've also had this happen with things before... something shows up in the city in the wee hours of the morning but it doesn't actually go out for delivery until the NEXT day. Ugh.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
Find some sort of distraction from thinking about the actual wait. Immerse yourself in something: work, tv, projects, even if they're BJD related and especially if they're related to the doll you're waiting on! It makes me feel better to search for pics/videos of my dolls for the umpteenth time every 20 minutes anyway :)

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
I've only posted once and I'm new here and a little unsure of what I'm doing but it did feel good to talk about it. Like this post felt good too! And I loved reading some other people's responses.

    2. I'm new to the hobby, and the wait for my first doll is killing me. I've ordered a Doll Chateau, Douglas, but after 5+ months of waiting, i'm becoming very disinterested:...(! I haven't even gotten the doll yet, and it's like I'm falling out of love:doh. I feel like if I the doll had become before this date, I would have bonded well with the doll. But now when I think about my first doll it just makes me feel tired of waiting, I'm so impatient. I'm really disappointed in not staying committed to this sculpt, and I feel like I could wait, but somethings telling me I just wont love him. I've already bought clothes and accessories with him because I thought I should have everything planned out for him when he gets home:...(. How do you pass time? Has this happened to anyone else? Did you manage to bond with the doll? If not what did you do?

If this thread isn't in the right place feel free to move it or delete it mods.

    3. Aww!!! I'm sorry you're feeling regret. Honestly, it took me a few months before I purchased my first BJD cos I wanted to make sure what venue I wanted to go in and even still I ended up selling my first doll 4 years after I first got her cos my aesthetic changed. One thing that I find is a good tool is research. Try to find as many pictures of the mould you're interested in, in varied poses and face-ups. I think that helps a lot. I hope when you get your dolly you get a rekindled love for him. Sometimes that's all it takes or a face-up change. Also, in this hobby patience is something to try to have cos a lot of times there will be long wait time, that of the company wait, layaway plans & shipping time. One more thing, when I'm waiting for my dolly to arrive I tend to go over different pictures I find on Flickr to steady my heart. I hope anything I said here has helped. Happy journeys, dear.:)

P.S. shopping for clothes, eyes, wigs & accessories for them helps me lots, too.

    4. moonglo Thanks for the thoughtful reply!

    5. Oh, dear me. So sorry to hear that, darling! I definitely agree with moonglo, looking at pictures of different people's interpretations and customizations of the doll can definitely help a lot. I actually felt the same thing when waiting just a few days for a doll to arrive. :sweat I know, just a few days. >.< Pretty pathetic, really, I'd imagine. :XD:Anyways! I immediately began to wonder if I could actually make him into all that I had planned for him to be, and that perhaps I should have chosen another sculpt. When he came and I was able to see him and hold him in-person, all that doubt and potential regret fizzled out. And of course it may be different for you, everyone is different. But I encourage you to hold out until you see the doll in-person. At least for me, finally holding the doll you've waited for so long and wanted so dearly, it will be worth it. And, in my opinion, odds are you'll fall for the doll same way you did when you first saw it. Hope this helps at least a little bit, and I look forward to seeing a box opening post from you in the future~! :aheartbea

    6. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?
My first doll I bought from a friend, so it was only about a week - which was still excruciating, because I wanted her to be here so much. My second was the longer wait - close to five months because I ordered her right at the time FL was falling so behind on orders. She was worth every second of it, though.

How do you wait for a doll?
I start figuring out his/her character, get some wigs and eyes lined up along with a couple of outfits. I Google pics to get ideas. Which is making me sound more patient than I really am sometimes.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
Depends. I know there's always a wait for a new doll, but when I start hearing about wait times longer than the average pregnancy, then I wonder if it's worth it to consider another company's sculpt. Someone on another board was talking about waiting close to a year for a doll (which I believe is OT here.)

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
Mine haven't been bad. But going back to the other question, she mentioned that communication with the artist/company in question had been spotty at best. That would really get to me. As long as I know what's going on (like FL getting socked with orders during last winter's event and falling behind,) it's okay. But close to a year into what was initially supposed to be a 3-4 month timeframe with no doll and almost no communication - that's bad.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
Look at pictures, get ideas, plan your doll's character. Talk to other people who have the same doll, especially if it's a new company or size for you. And be all happy and excited about it. Look forward to the box opening.

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
They help me get an idea of how long it's taking and if orders really are coming in. When I was waiting for my PKF Shiwoo, a member here was following the waiting room thread and keeping everyone in our FL Facebook group updated about what week's orders were arriving. It soothed a lot of nerves - mine included.

    7. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?
I've become a lot more patient! XD

How do you wait for a doll?
I don't think about it too much, to be honest. I'll check out the sales page once and awhile, sometimes pop into a waiting room, and post in box openings for other members.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
Not at all. I've waited between 2 and 13 months for my current dolls, and haven't had any issues.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
My first doll ever, he's the one that took 13 months. The company just got incredibly backlogged, but he was worth it in the end.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
It helps me to remain calm and not second-guess myself. I tend to not obsess over the doll I ordered too much because I like to notice the little details in person and fall in love all over again :)

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
Yes, I do like the waiting rooms here, and I do use them on occasion when I know I'll have time to update my order status.

    8. Waiting on my loongsoul 69cm large bust girl body to come in
I have to wait nearly a year for it

What do you guys do to keep your sanity?

    9. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?
With my first doll I couldn't wait. Everyday I would look up my doll online and stare at my order in the hopes that the status would change and that it would be shipped. I guess I wasn't really ready for the long wait. I constantly talked about my doll and I even put pictures (from the company) of her on my phone so that I could see her. I think I haven't even changed my background yet.
I'm now waiting on my second doll, this time from migidoll and I'm glad it's not as bad as the first time. I'm just waiting, sometimes checking to see if the status has changed and, somewhat to my own dismay, looking at new dolls to buy.
I guess my resolve in saying "Just one doll" when I started this hobby was never true.

How do you wait for a doll?
Like I said, I look them up, talk about them and think about their stories. I guess that's another important part of it, making their personalities.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
Actually yes. I really want to buy a Ringdoll but the wait is just too long. Normally that wouldn't be a problem but I'm planning on moving to another country and by the time the doll would arrive I wouldn't even be here anymore. I guess I could always change the shipping adress when I move but I just don't want to run the risk of missing it.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
I honestly don't have one yet, maybe the wait I had for my first doll?

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
Plan your dolls character, keep yourself busy and don't obsess over your doll too much, it will arrive eventually.

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
I'm pretty new to DOA so I haven't used them yet.

    10. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second? My first was around 5 months and it felt like forever! The second was second hand and much easier of a wait. I also found it easier to wait since I already had a dolly at home.

How do you wait for a doll? DOA, BJD Addicts on FB, Obsessively checking the tracking, Drawing, Youtube, Flickr.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll? No. If I love the doll, I accept the wait.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll? Waiting for my first doll. It felt beyond long. I was so excited to jump into the hobby and post pictures and just be able to hold and pose my own doll.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll? Everyone says "be patient" but it's so hard so my advice is to whine as much as you want about the wait hehe ;)

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them? Yes! I like to keep track of other people's orders and share in the excitement with them when they get their dolls.

    11. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?

It wasn't actually that long, but it felt like forever. My first doll was a normally stocked doll and I think she took about 2 weeks to ship. My second was around a month and a half. Neither are really bad but up until a few months ago my second doll had been my most expensive.

How do you wait for a doll?

Silently plotting with my fingers steepled, a menacing look in my eyes.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?

Only if they tell me up front there's like a year wait. I think 6 months would be my cracking point.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?

I don't really think I have anything that qualifies as a 'worst', but I was chomping at the bit for my first doll. I remember that much. I think half the reason why I bought that doll specifically was less wait time, even though it ended up not being exactly what I wanted (patience is a virtue, kids).

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?

If you have money after purchasing your doll, I'd suggest looking into things you might want/need for it. If you don't, consider taking up a hobby that would lead you to that path, like sewing. I'm also a big fan of looking through box opening threads. Sort of satisfies that urge to rip into your own box, haha.

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?

I... Stalk them. I don't actually post but you can see me lingering under the 'users browsing this thread' section.

    12. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?

I think I was a little bit more patient the second time around, "been there done that" and all. I do notice a bit of a trend with myself though - really impatient for the first week or two right after ordering, then I'll calm down. Get another impatient streak about halfway through and then again towards the last two to three weeks.
I'm usually pretty good but every once in a while there will be a super special doll I'm waiting for and I go a little crazy ;)

How do you wait for a doll?

I look at lots of pictures of the doll I've ordered, plan eyes and wigs and faceup, buy or make some clothing for them. I don't plan out characters for them much ahead of time because they tend to have their own ideas about who they want to be.
I also spend time with the dolls at home as it helps. I sometimes forget how much I love the ones I already have when I'm impatient for a new one.
Sometimes it also helps to do things non-doll related things to take a break from it.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?

Not really no. If I want it bad enough it's worth the wait. If the wait seems too much, I probably don't really want the doll that badly XD

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?

      I don't think I really have one.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?

While it's exciting to get new dolls I think it's important not to wish your life away! Find other things to enjoy while you are waiting :)

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?

I sure do! It's great to follow them, even if I don't post much. It's nice to at least keep up with the shipping dates to get an idea of how long the wait times are.

    13. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?
The first wait was a loooooooot shorter than the second xD I bought my first doll's head on the marketplace and his body was in stock at Bobobie. I received both part of him the same day, a week after I ordered his body ! The second was waaaaay longer, since I had to wait four months for the head and three for the body. In the end I didn't really bond with it since I had found a head on the marketplace that'll be way better for the character I planned to make, so now I'm selling the body. But I've gotten really excited for my third doll, for which I probably have to wait another three to four months (and it's already been two months...)

How do you wait for a doll?
Erm... Impatiently ? xD I'm currently trying NOT TO BUY to my incomming dolly too much clothes, because I'm always broke and she doesn't need them for now, I take care of the dolls I already have, order my SD boy some clothes... Weirdly, I almost never go to the company's website, because she looks so different from what she'll be... I also involve myself more in creating her story and all the other characters in her story, the universe, plot... and it's really nice !

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
Well, no, since the next dolls on my list are also DZ/DC. Even if I'd rather like waiting less, I prefer having the doll I really want, even if I wait for her longer.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
      Fortunately I have none !

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
Keep cool and prepare your doll's arrival by bying her a wig, eyes and a few clothes. Create and write her story if you're a storyteller. Make plans for her. Go to doll meets. and find an AMAZING book or TV show or something to get all excited about !

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
I don't feel the need to use them, so I don't know if they help or not^^

    14. B]How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?[/B]
If I refer back to the very first BJD I ordered it was a Cerberus Project Delf Lishe in WS with default face-up via a dealer (before the eluts site existed) and it took about two weeks at the most! I was expecting to wait a month or two and was so surprised when the postie turned up before I had to go to work. The box she came in was huge too, so I knew it had to be her :) My second doll was a Delf Shiwoo again through the same dealer and he was ready and shipped in about the same time. Although the Shiwoo did get lost somewhere between my local deilvery depot and post office for nearly a month!
How do you wait for a doll?
I prepare by purchasing wigs and eyes and of course shoes! If I am going to be doing a face-up, I make sure I have the right tools and materials and come up with face-up colour scheme and designs.
Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
It depends on the doll really. If I've had them on my wishlist for a long while then I am just happy to have finally ordered them and the wait doesn't bother me. I've just come to the end of a 7 month wait for a DZ Hiro who I am now not sure I will be keeping and to be honest the wait has got something to do with the wait time.
What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
As mentioned above my Delf Shiwoo managed to lie in limbo somewhere between the parcelforce depot and my local post office for almost a month. That was excruciating as he was obviously so close but the wait continued due to negligence on the part of Royal Mail.
What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
Use the wait time to decide on what look you really want for them and prepare by gathering items for them. if you are planning to mod them or do your own face-up and body blushing experiment with ideas so you have more of an idea what to do when they finally arrive.
What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
I use them and I do find they help. If I can see the speed at which orders are being sent out I can judge how long the wait is going to be and that helps me to get things ready for them (like wigs, eyes etc).

    15. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second? I ordered my first two dolls just within a few weeks of one another. The 2nd took a bit longer than the first but I wasn't particularly anxious waiting for either of them.

How do you wait for a doll? I feel like I'm in the minority here when I say waiting for dolls doesn't bother me at all. I hardly notice. The only time I get antsy is once they've actually shipped. Then I stalk that EMS site and hit refresh 1000 times a day.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll? No. Unless the wait was, like, a year. I might reconsider at that point and weigh my desire. If I wanted it badly enough? I would wait as long as it takes.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll? I don't have any wait time horror stories. I missed the Dollshe debacle by a couple of months. I think my longest wait was 4 months.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll? If you have other dolls, focus on them and try not to obsessed. If it's your first doll, spend some time shopping for things for him or her. I found that helps to prepare for their arrival.

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them? I really like waiting rooms! It helps me gauge how long my wait will be and you can chat with other folks who are in the same boat, as it were.

    16. I'm still a newbie with BJD. I am still waiting for the first doll I ordered, but...since that first purchased, I have already purchased 2 more 2nd hand that I liked better than the one that is still on layaway. So I may have to sell that first one when it finally arrives!

    17. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?
My first doll was in stock at the Denver Doll Emporium, so it arrived in a few days. x) I was so anxious to get my first bjd and I was so happy that she was in stock. I don't have a second yet.

How do you wait for a doll?
I imagine I will be nauseous with anticipation if I have to wait several months.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
It was for my first doll since I was so eager to start on the hobby. Luckily I found her in stock :)

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
      Constantly refreshing the tracking page.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
Just wait for that feeling of complete euphoria you will feel when your package is delivered! It will come! :)

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
I haven't used them yet, but I will with my future dollies. :)

    18. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second? I bought my first doll from FB and I got her rather quickly after paying in full so I spoiled myself. Already been waiting a month for my second and I'm dying!!!

How do you wait for a doll? I've been buying him a few things and saving up for wig/clothes commissions and also making him some things.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll? Not really. But I definitely prefer the more instant gratification of the secondhand market.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll? So far this one just because I want him so bad and it seems like I've been waiting SO long. lol *is impatient*

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll? Do things to keep your mind off it or spoil another doll with attention!

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them? I like the waiting rooms I just wish waiting room users were a bit more interactive with one another.

    19. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?
Not applicable yet. (Unless you count the saving up period part of the wait, in which it's probably going to take much longer, but I think I'll be okay through it)
How do you wait for a doll?
I make plans for their character first, gather some fabrics I think might be fitting for them, things like that.(make generic sized underwear that can fit whatever doll, so they won't be totally nude)
Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?
It actually is, I was going to buy my first doll through DDE, but when I saw she was no longer in stock, I freaked, and ordered her from a different dealer who had her in stock.
What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?
I'm an underage teenager, living with their family, and I have no way to order anything off the internet. All purchases have to get the "okay" approval from mom and dad. Even though I had the money to buy here on my 16th birthday, I had to keep asking over and over again for three months before I could order her. The mentality of "I can have her, but I cant" is the worst part of the experience.
What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?
Do little doll related things so when they get here, you have stuff to use. Also, if you can buy a second hand off topic doll (ie, a barbie or some other play doll like that) it helps sometimes with practicing photographing a doll, and can fill that little void. Look up reviews of your doll too, if they're out there, so you know what to expect when they arrive.
What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?
at the time, I was very new to the site, and hadn't really found them yet, I mostly spent my time in the crafting area, looking for clothing patterns to stock up on. So no, I don't use them, but I probably will with my next doll purchase.

    20. How did your first wait for a doll differ from your second?

For my first doll they were in stock so I got them within a week. My second doll took about a month and a week to arrive. Even waiting a month was painful since I was used to only waiting a week for something.

How do you wait for a doll?

Aside from excessive shipping checking I looked for other owner pictures and began making basic props and clothes for them.

Is the wait a deterrent for you when considering buying a doll?

Yes it is. The way I see it, if a wait time is so long during that time its very likely you'll end up finding another doll you like so much more.

What was your worst experience with waiting for a doll?

luckily I haven't had any issues with waiting times. Although during the wait for my second doll I questioned if I should have bought it.

What advice do you have for someone who is waiting for a doll?

Personally I'd say don't be tempted to buy more dolls while you wait to fill the void. Stick with one doll and go on from there.

What about the waiting rooms here on DOA, Do they help you? Do you use them?

I recently joined DOA so I haven't gotten to use it. And I'm not expecting any more dolls, so I think I'll pass. ^^
