1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Dictionary of important terms and its origins?

Jan 22, 2014

    1. ermm.... sedimentary has to do with geology.... I think the word you meant was sentimental ^^

      EDIT: .... Tez beat me to it XD

      As for grail doll... I wasnt quite sure what the definition was either... but I mostly think of it as a doll that you really want but is way out of your price range.... that's kind of how I am with most Iplehouse dolls at the moment XD But I would have to say my real grail is a Volks SD16 Megu like this one here [none fullset of course XD]:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?562790-The-Queen-of-Love-amp-Beauty-Volks-SD16-Megu-%E3%82%81%E3%81%90-%282-Pics%29&highlight=volks+sd16+megu

      omg I LOVE that faceup!

    2. I've got one!

      Dream doll (not to be confused with Dream of Doll, which is a company) -- as I've heard it used, a doll that is one step below a Grail Doll, in that it is not quite as unobtainable. The doll you are saving towards, or hoping to find on the Marketplace. It's taking some effort to obtain, but you are planning on eventually owning it.

    3. Hmm, I've always regarded "dream doll" and "grail doll" as interchangeable in meaning, ie the perfect doll that would theoretically complete my collection, but in the ever spiraling hyperbole of the Internet "grail" has eclipsed mere "dream."

      Hybrid: a doll assembled from the parts of two or more different dolls, either from completely different companies or from two dolls that are only available as a complete doll of a certain type (eg a Volks limited SD13 girl head on a limited SDGraffiti boy body). Dolls that are "successful hybrids" are ones in which the resin matches and the proportions are pleasing, preferably without modification.

    4. I'll be honest that to me, "dream doll" is something truly unattainable, where the sculpt or parts just don't exist. Once I can find pieces that will add up to that "dream doll" it becomes more of a "grail" at that point. But that may be a non-standard definition coming from the number of fantasy/non-human dolls I hope to piece together.

    5. Because I love Minifees I often think to myself 'I need my Minifeed!' Sorry that was bad ;0 )

    6. Skin: resin color, as in white skin, normal skin, real skin.

      Regarding "face-up", I believe that's one of those English phrases used by the Japanese in slightly different ways. "Up" is often used in advertisements to mean "enhancement". As in bust-up, beauty-up, etc.

      Brushing vs. blushing: It might be an "L-R" translation problem (as kurosu-chan said). For instance the Supia site gives a link to their "Frickr" site. :lol:

    7. Pretty sure this is the case, and honestly i think it's kinda endearing.

      I've added some of the stuff mentioned here to my blog's Glossary, but if there's anything else people were wondering about, let us know here!

    8. A few size terms;

      1/2 - The AoD 90cm dolls, Dollmore Lusion etc. There's not very many dolls in this scale, although there's a few artists and smaller companies that do make them.

      1/3 - This covers everything from the 70cm scale (Dollshe, DZ's 70cm body, Volks' SD16), to the 60cm (SD13, etc) and smaller 1/3 scale dolls (SD10, down to about 55cm). Some people (Myself included) get annoyed at people using SD to mean any 1/3 scale doll, since there's no sensible way of comparing an EID to an SD13; They're too different in scale, style and proportion.

      1/4 - 35-45cm dolls, MSDs, "slim minis" such as Minifees.

      Tinies - The group with the biggest size differences; From Volks' YoSD and Leeke's D-types, which are in the 20cm range, and proportioned as children, all the way down to PukiPukis and Lati Whites, which are around 10cm (and are sometimes called 1/12th scale child dolls). "Tinies" includes the slim tinies in about 1/6th scale, which are 20-25cm tall, and can wear fashion doll clothing. It also stretches as far as 1/12th scale dolls, which are dolls with adult proportions around 12-15cm tall, and are in-scale to doll's houses.

      The whole sizing issue gets more and more complicated as more and more companies make more dolls of different sizes, and sometimes the lines between the size categories can seem a bit artificial. There was a small push a while ago to have dolls around the size of YoSDs and dolls around the size of Latis recategorised into being different sizes, but it seems to have tailed off again.

    9. "Bitten" - When you get skin pinched in any of your doll's joints.

      "Doll reflexes" - the incredible ability for us BJD owners to miraculously catch dolls in a nose dive. I didn't have any ability like that before BJDs!

      "recast" - (hate to put this one in here, but I didn't know they existed until very recently and a newbie should know of them) A bootleg doll cast from an official doll, and sold for much cheaper or in colors not offered by the company.

      "Micro BJD" - Another thing I recently discovered. There are BJDs out there that are smaller than a pinky finger (like, less than 10cm- as small as 5 or 6). I like to think of them as potential dolls for my dolls.

      "Yellowing" - The change in a doll's skin color due to a reaction with the sun. Tan dolls turn green, white dolls turn an extreme yellow, and normal skinned dolls can turn a nice peachy tone.

      "Modding" - By adding material or subtracting material, a person changes the physical structure of the doll. Such as a gender change, eye opening, toe separation...

    10. Ooh thanks, I didn't have some of these down yet!

      For those interested, if this is allowed, the Glossary is here. (if not, Mods, please beg pardon and delete.)
      I am frequently updating it lately to try and get the most common terms covered. It doesn't include all doll companies, though, just some of the big ones and the ones I mention elsewhere on my blog.

    11. I'd like to make a correction to "yellowing".

      Yellowing - the change in a doll's resin color due to time and exposure to light and oxygen. The amount of yellowing differs depending on company, resin type, and skintone; most dolls will merely mellow to a creamy or peach tone, though there have been extreme cases of resin turning butter-yellow or green. The older a doll is, the more likely it is to have some degree of yellowing.

      (Saying it's just because of sunlight, and that all tan turns green and all white turns extreme yellow, is entirely inaccurate.)

    12. Rosslyn: That's pretty funny! I hadn't thought about it that way even though it should be pretty obvious to me since I'm Asian and have those issues with making those sounds myself. I guess I thought if they were able to sound out a word, they might know the meaning of the other word they have typed instead. ^^;
