Did a small change ever caused your doll to completely change character?

Jan 25, 2010

    1. Just happened to me and Zo a few days ago. I'd bought this white fur wig in a custom size from Sunny's World about 3 months ago to go with a doll I never got in the end. Because of the custom size I didn't even bother to put it on one of my boys and more or less forgot that I even had it in my drawer, until I felt like changing Zo's wig for fun. When I did and found the white wig I was surprised to see that it actually kind of fit. It gives his head such a different shape, he looks like a completely different boy to me. With his original black shaggy wig he fit the character he was supposed to represent perfectly and I loved that, of course. But now, with the new wig, he's so different it's almost like he creates his own character now :? Calm and intelligent but really arrogant and always concerned about his styling. Doesn't have much in common with the sweet kid he was before.

Sounds weird, but I couldn't even call him by his first name anymore since it didn't seem right, so he goes by his middle name now. We're silly like that :doh

    2. Ok, I put a wig on a DOC T.Too recently, and whilst it didn't change his character, it gave him one!!! He needed this wig, it totally changed the way I looked at him!!!!

    3. Wow, i defeinately like these replies! Anyone else with a sudden change story?

    4. I don't have a bjd yet, but with my other dolls something as simple as an eye color change or a wig (i.e. on a blythe) can change not only the doll's personality but also it's ethnicity. It's truly amazing how many different things you can get out of the same face sculpt.

    5. How about an eye size change?

My Mattimeo had crappy 18 mm brown default eyes from Abio Angel and I switched them for 16 mm Dollmore acrylics. The change was amazing! He suddenly looked so mature and alive. I've got brown fantasy eyes from Eyeco on the way for him now... can't wait to see what the change will be like this time.

    6. My Elfdoll: Yumi came with the two face plates, big eyes "innocent" Yuki
      and narrow eyes "snarky" Hikari.
they arrived with yellowish brown eyes, which were weird but OK in the Innocent face, and absolutely scary in the "snarky face"...

I ended up trying out a few eye colors, and some slight variation in eye sizes. (lucky for me, I was getting free eyes with some of the clothes and other things I ordered for her).... when I got the right eyes for them they got more personable. "Snarky" became clever with a tiny bit of an attitude. (You know, the kid who is rated the top of the class who actually IS smarter than many of the teachers but would never EVER say so... ) and "Innocent" with the right eyes, doesn't look "brainless". just that simple shift of JUST the right eyes.

and I still sometimes let them be little demons with red or yellow-brown eyes.
      <is there a smiley for "Bwah hahahaha"?>

My Elfdoll Mir came with lovely acrylic dark blue eyes: I loved him and them from the get go. just the same I got him the same dark blue, and some brown eyes in glass. Just because he's my hunk. :D

Fun variations in changing his wigs around, my favorite is the shiny long white wig, but sometimes only one of the black ones... or even the turquoise one (moment of insanity that worked out nicely oddly enough) are a lot of fun. He's still himself, just more serious or less serious, or outright cosplaying.

Letting my daughter or my friends sort through their accoutrement and sort them in new and different ways also gives me a fresh POV of my dolls. (DD is 22 and got my dolls a HORSE for solstice, no present for me, just for the dolls... but that's actually Lovely!)

    7. In fact, no. I even try to make them change a character by changing something in their appearance. But they are so stubborn, they just go back to what they used to be :)

    8. Certainly it's happened to me!

My Alérion (Volks MSD F-06) came with long, wavy blonde hair and grey-blue eyes, which made her look so innocent, languorous and winsome. Swapped the blonde locks for a dark wine shoulder-length wave, and she became much more lively and curious. I recently gave her orange-yellowy eyes, and her expression became sharp and very alert. Same with clothes: her innocence comes through in dresses, but she's more spunky in skirts and blouses. Alérion's come a long way from where she began, and I'm very happy about it -- her real personality is coming through more and more. All that's left to do is a new face-up. :)

I've also seen many expression changes, mostly in the wig department. Vega (DoT Lahoo) wears only black hair, so he looked positively outraged when I put him into a white fur wig. It seemed like his expression really changed! He's grown so much into his black wigs that every other colour simply looks bad on him. Same with Syr (Crobi Lance girl) -- I'd always planned for her to have dark purple hair, but before those wigs came I had her in that white wig. I'm sure she glared belligerently at me the entire time, and when she got her purple hair she definitely appeared calmer!

    9. At this point, Zetto has One True Wig (tm).

Before he got this One True Wig, I tried another on him. DO NOT WANT.

Then I got him this wig, and he was a happy camper.

I've tried others, but invariably he stays with this one and rejects everything else.

    10. Something so simple as switching eyes has turned my sad faced girl into a sultry one, and my once tired, unimpressed looking boy into the cat who swallowed the canary...its amazing how such a small thing change can have such a big effect....

    11. Hm... Just last week during a very, very boring meeting i suddenly realised i was considering a different eye-color for a co-worker. He would look absolutely smashing with a set of bright blues.
I really, really spend to much time thinking about dolls.

    12. So, my doll is based on the man who lives in my head. His default eyes are blue and his eyes are supposed to be dark brown...The blue's growing on me though, and I'm no longer sure I want to switch them. Also, in my head he wears glasses, but I got him a pair and proudly put them on and then went O.o that's not Andre! They made him look so sad, shy, and book nerdy. He's supposed to be an art nerd and only a little shy...it just didn't work...sad day.

    13. Yes! My yuki looks very severe in her cat eyes.. Giving her a grown up and spoiled sort of personality. But just for the heck of it I decided to try a pair of normal glass eyes. All of a sudden she looked happy, like she looks so innocent and happy. I was a mazed at how such a small change had changed her personality so much.

    14. This happened in a BIG way when I made a new shirt for Lennon. I was shocked at how just a simple change of outfit made me not only fall back in love with my dolly, but also made me like his wig (which I wasn't terribly fond of before)! Suddenly he feels "right." It's an amazing feeling.

    15. This has happened to me many times. One, is my MSD, Aurora. She used to have a very long wig that made her look young and sweet. However, when I had her in a short bob, she looked more sassy.

Also, my SD, Marcus, seems to change his expression when I look at him at different angles. I think it's cool how little changes can dramatically change the appearance of our dolls.

    16. I totally had this whole character planned out for Ceylon - and then when she got home I loooooved how she looked bald.

So now she's just adorable baldy and I never did make those steampunk clothes. OTL I'll probably do it one day but I may end up buying another MSD and giving her the steampunk look.

    17. Oh yes! Arianel (Unidoll Limited UH-13) was a rather sweet girl until I put a pair of Masterpiece Louisiana Iris eyes in her & she found her true personality. Now she's a bit aloof & intellectional rather than rather being just pretty. She's become the leader of a small coven studying with my true witches. I didn't think it was possible to love her any more than I did but she's become a major player in my characters. One small change can make such a difference in these dolls.

    18. Yes, my newest boy, Remiel, was supposed to be a shy faun but he didnt seem comfortable with the character, so one day, I made some bubble shorts for him with a tut I saw and I/he loved it! &then, I changed his eye position and remove his [largish] horns, and he suddenly changed into a snobbish/arrogant boy that demanded to be called Remy[shorten from Remiel]!!

    19. I actually kind of hated my puki for a while, when she wore a long blonde fur wig. I came SO close to selling her, I took her wig off to put her in her box and remembered why I'd liked her in the first place. I bought a new brown wig for her and now I'm constantly playing with her, she just looks like a more mischevious little pixie, like she was supposed to.

    20. This has happened to me a number of times. Right now, it's happening to Maria, who is supposed to be my super rough-and-tumble wishes-she-was-born-a-man girl. She was supposed be be very muscular, heavily tattooed, and kind of over the top when it came to makeup and such, so that's how I made her. (Her body is even a male body modded female!)

But I've been struggling with her a lot, so I finally wiped her tattoos and faceup, thinking I was going to sell her. But over Easter, my parents were coming to visit, and not wanting to have a nakies doll sitting on my desk, I grabbed a random super frilly lolita dress that no one ever wears to toss on her.

The change was startling - she looks so demure, and sweet now, though still with an edge that makes her just... Maria. So now I have to do a new faceup to reflect this.
