Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. As a boy with brothers....yes of course. I liked action figures though, not dolls. As I got older I got into comic books which lead to higher quality action figures and soon after that I found bjds. It was a sweet transition for me. =)

    2. Nope. When I was younger, I actually hated dolls, ironically enough. I was a big tomboy, and barbies/other dolls were girly and dumb. That's why my mom is so shocked that I'm into bjds, though they're unlike any dolls I had access to as a child.

    3. I liked barbies for about a year before I got over them, but boy, did I absolutely hate dolls! My parents would always get the ones talked or sang and they were just creepy and were given a personality with their voices, so I couldn't really play with them like I could my beanie babies. For a while, I was even scared of dolls because my parents got me one that had huge eyes and buck teeth and it giggled. Oh my gawd, did that doll have the creepiest giggle in the world! And her hair was like those little trolls. She was really really creepy. Now I love dolls, but I'm still fairly creeped out by baby dolls and porcelain dolls. >.<

    4. Yes I played with ALL kinds of dolls. I had My Twins, American Girl Dolls, Barbies, My Scene Dolls, Bratz, Baby dolls. I loved them, I gave them hair cuts and constantly played with their outfits. I love BJDs because they're sophisticated but they're just as fun.

    5. Yes, a lot. Baby dolls, Barbie, Polly Pocket and whatnot, I was a typical girl I think.

    6. I had SOME dolls as a kid - mostly Pippa dolls, if anyone remembers them. I also had a Havoc doll - I was a bit of a tomboy, so her adventurous side was what appealed. I didn't play with them much tho.
My husband commented the other day on how I dress my doll a bit like myself, so I'm now wondering if I'm making a bit of a mini-me, and dressing her in things I feel I'm getting too old to wear myself. Hmmmm....

    7. I played with barbie and some babyborn dolls, but I wasn't too fond of dolls. I did have one favorite, a porselain doll named Emily, but I have no idea what happened to her.

I did have a lot of those Polly Pocket dolls and I played a lot with Playmobile.

    8. Yep, I played with dolls quite a bit when I was a kid. Like many here I had Barbies, Polly Pockets and baby dolls.

    9. i definitely played with dolls as a child, dolls were my favorite playthings so i was happy to find BJD's since i had missed playing with dolls after i "grew out" of them.

    10. Nope, I beat up my cousin's barbies :)

    11. I was more a stuffed animal person really. I still am and make them now that I'm older!

I didn't have many dolls to speak of except for a Lee Middleton doll that I took exceptional care of until my cousin drew all over her face.

My sister was more of the porcelain doll collector when we were younger, but I started to take an interest in dolls strangely after watching "The Living Doll" on The Twilight Zone... call me weird.

    12. I didn't ever like fashion dolls/Barbie type dolls growing up. I did eagerly spend my allowance on Sylvanian Families dolls and sets though! I think I preferred them because they were animals, and they had a quaint, old-world sort of charm to them that Barbies and the like didn't have. Barbie stuff was always so neon and pink and cheap-feeling, whereas Sylvanian Families things were neutral coloured and seemed to have a lot of character and love put into them.

Beyond that, though, I really preferred things like Lego, stuffed toys, "action" stuff like Mighty Max, and so on. I wasn't really a tomboy or anything, I just preferred that type of thing when it came to toys.

As for BJDs, I really don't know what made me "click" with them all of a sudden. I knew of their existence -- my friend had some whose photos I looked at on Facebook and DA, and I'd seen them in hobby shops, but it took me a while to realise, "hey, I think I really really want one of those." Glad it finally happened though, my girl is so important to me. :3

I DID feel super self-conscious at first though. My parents happened to find out about my interest in BJDs after I ordered my Shoyo, and I was worried what they'd think! They're pretty well accepting of my eccentricities by now, though, I suppose.

    13. Yes, I did. I had a ton of Barbies, but I had a bunch of Lego men and Batman action figures, too. When I was about 14, I decided I was too old to play with Barbies anymore and passed them all on to my younger cousins... >_> and almost immediately after that, I ended up becoming addicted to anime and started collecting anime dolls and figures... which later led me to discovering the BJD world...

    14. I was more of a stuffed animal person as a child, and still am, but did like some dolls as long as they were jointed or articulated :p I always really like Gi-Joes too, but never had any of my own.
The first dolls I truly liked were always sister dolls, which had a sort of plastic skeleton under foam under a lycra-type skin which allowed them to be posed much like bjds.. only their neck and wrists didn't have full joints.. they could just swivel. I did have barbies and fashion dolls too, but of those my faves were again the couple vintage ball joint types ones I picked up from garage sales... not sure what they were called.

So, not much has changed ;)

    15. I suppose it would really definition of play... I had a set of the young gymnast girls that came with the uneven bars and the balance beam and such. Those I played with because the where jointed and such. I liked making (poorly done) stop motion photography with them. The regular barbies got strapped under kites and towed behind bikes to see if they would fly.

    16. It's so fun to read everyone's posts :)
I've always had dolls and loved them, different kinds of them. And I also enjoy making dolls, with cloth, and other material... Love love love dolls ^_^~

    17. Did you play with dolls as a child?
Yes, I had Barbie dolls and Cabbage Patch dolls mostly.

      Why or why not?
I liked to change their outfits and play house with my dolls as a child.

If yes, did your childhood love of dolls get you into BJDs or was it something else?
I never really thought about this. I suppose playing with dolls at a younger age makes me more inclined to get a BJD. I'd just always thought BJD's were so cool and wanted one.

If no, how did your lack of childhood dolliness effect your BJD hobby (did it make you feel self-conscious/etc)?

    18. Did you play with dolls as a child?
      Why or why not?
Yes, I did play with dolls as a child. :) My mom and grandma would get me Barbies when I was little, and I loved acting out their lives and playing with them (my Barbies, not my family, of course!).
If yes, did your childhood love of dolls get you into BJDs or was it something else?
Yes, it was mostly because of my childhood love of dolls that I got into BJD's. I thought it was weird at first that I was attached to (and couldn't get rid of) my Barbies that I used to play with when I was little. But on the Internet, I found that there were other people out there in this world who collected dolls, so it doesn't bother me anymore. I just think it's sad that I don't know any dolly collectors around where I live. :(

    19. As a child I had a lot of barbie's and brat dolls. And I really mean A LOT. Most my childhood memories involve playing dolls with my brother. I was always a little scared of other types of dolls though. I never liked china dolls and more decorative dolls. I did have a small doll I carried around for years though. I was so attached to her and took her everywhere that she got very damaged though which broke my little heart at the time.

    20. I played with dolls when I was younger. I collected a bunch of barbies and I had accessories for them too. I would pick a favorite barbie I had and I would make that the main barbie I wanted to play with. I ended up putting clothes on the barbie that belonged to another barbie so I'd end up with one barbie with clothes on and several without XD
