Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I had a Ken doll, and other male dolls, growing up (I'm a guy) I guess it started with my oldest brother's old GI Joe. ( the 12" version, with flocked hair.) I think we also had the Lone Ranger and Tonto as well. Looking back, I had quite a few dolls/action figures as a kid. I'm still waiting for my first BJD to be shipped. hehe

    2. I played with Barbies and American Girl dolls. Fond memories of both, although I am much more interested in the aesthetic of abjds now

    3. Yes. Barbies, American Girl, Porcelain... I love dolls and have since I was a young child. That's why I got into BJDs so easily! It made me so delightful to find dolls that I could completely customize and actually still "play" with (I can photograph and cuddle and do more than just stick them on a shelf). I've always loved dolls and as I read earlier, they ARE the ultimate doll. I definitely think that my childhood love of dolls affected how quickly I got into this and the high level of enthusiasm that I have. My friends must be so sick of my dolls... And, I have a feeling that since I'm already two years in that this hobby is here to stay a while. Already loving dolls definitely helped.

    4. I have played with dolls since I was a little girl and started sewing for them when I was 10 years old. I have always loved all sorts of dolls - even paper dolls. They have always added a lot of joy and beauty to my life.

    5. I really didn't like playing with dolls -at all- when I was a kid. I hated barbies, but I always got them for my birthday or christmas. They would stay in their box unopened on the top shelf of my closet. I was a true tomboy as a kid. I was only interested in climbing trees, riding my back, skiing, playing with my dog, and other things of that nature. I remember having temper tantrums when I was asked to wear skirts, dresses, or when my mom would attempt to do anything with my hair. XD

Not exactly what she had in mind for her daughter that's for sure. XD

I didn't start to enjoy "girl" things like make-up, styling my hair or clothing until I was in my mid 20's, shortly after I had interest in BJDs. Funny how BJDs helped me to have a feminine side! LOL

    6. When I was a kid, I desperately wanted an American Girl doll (She would look just like me!), but I wasn't ever allowed to have one. I guess that I kind of got over the "want dollie" urge for a while, until I stumbled across BJDs, & nowadays the urge is back in full swing.

    7. Ironically; no. My sister was the one with dolls, I had a mountain of toy animals xD Althou I did one day cut off the hair from one of my sisters barbie dolls (I thought it would grow back like humans :'3 my sister was angry at me for days xD)

    8. Haha you remind me of that kid from Toy-story  I was a very bright child. I was very unusual because I preferred books over dolls. I did have some barbie dolls. I remember this one time when I was little, where I woke up excited because I got a tiny barbie doll under my pillow. My mom said the tooth fairy delivered it. I was so happy. Of course I had those times, but I also remember being able to finish 12 books in a day and finishing harry potter's last volume in a day.
Oh, I also remember receiving a porcelain doll for Christmas when I was little and it was exactly my height (at 5) I don't know where it went. Now I am interested in collecting bjds at the age of 16 haha.

    9. I played with dolls all the time when I was little, then switched to a horse crazy phase during which plastic horses were my toys of choice. For some reason I got back into playing with dolls when I was 12 or 13 for about a year or so. Not sure what sparked the desire to play with them at that age, especially when I hadn't played with toys period for a year or two before that. Guess I just missed being a kid. Now at 20 I still play with dolls, but 'play' now consists of dressing them up and styling their hair and such. I have also developed a taste for much more expensive dolls ;)

    10. I didn't so much as play with dolls as I did collect them, so I was doomed to this hobby from the start. XD I was never a barbie person, but I collected porcelain dolls for my entire childhood. I used to get them as presents from my mother and grandma for birthdays and hannukah and the like, or as rewards for good grades and behavior, etc. I had over thirty at one point! (Many of them have been sold to actually pay for my newest dive into dolls, but I've kept the special ones.) I like the look of BJDs better as I grown up, the aesthetics more pleasing than the little girl dolls I always had, but that's where it came from for me!

    11. I played with dolls all throughout my childhood. Like My Scenes and Barbies and all those kinds.
So I think getting into BJDs was kind of just a step up from having those.

    12. I used to collect Barbies in my childhood. I liked that they can recreate the mini our world becouse in my childhood they were the only one dolls that could be played like this.

    13. I had baby dolls when I was really small, and then Quints and Barbies when I was a little older. My nanny and I used to make clothes for them together :) I stopped playing with dolls when my nanny moved though (when I was about 7), and didn't get back into them for about 12 years after that.

    14. Well, I'm still only 15, but I used to play with dolls alot more (I still have my well-love Barbies from my older cousins at my bedside) when I was younger. My cousins used to collect Barbies, and when they grew out of them I got them all for my 5th birthday :D So Most of those which I own are quite old. My mother has also told me that I used to play with my older brother's Action Man, and I used to throw them out windows on string like a sort-of bungee cord :o

I also have these Winx dolls that I got when I was obsessed with the TV show, and also some My Scene dolls too. My mother would never let me have Bratz, so I never got to play with them XD

I guess I've never really stopped playing with dolls XD

    15. I loved dolls as a kid and played with Barbies until I was 13, also knitting and sewing clothes for them.

    16. Like many it seems, I also collected and played with Barbies when I was younger. Then I ended up moving onto Breyers and plastic animals, and then of course I found and joined the BJD hobby years later. ^.^

    17. I've had dolls as long as I can remember. I had barbies, Polly Pockets, Polly Fashions, Sailor Moon dolls, Bratz Dolls, Playmobil. When I was very young I had a Baby Born doll that my mom used to make clothing for. I'd keep the doll in my bed at night, carry her everywhere, I even had a stroller for her!

    18. Yes, I played with Barbies, but I played more with my Bratz, Polly Pockets, and porcelain dolls that I took care of very well. That is until me and my mom moved, and my aunt, for whatever reason, thought it was okay to sell our stuff to complete strangers. Needless to say, all of my Bratz were sold, or to me stolen. I was divested; I loved those dolls.

    19. yes i did i played with barbies
      i dont anymore but awell

    20. Baby dolls when I was younger, but I've always loved Barbies UvU

I had about almost 10 barbies at one point and I use to play with them all with my sister and her polly pockets, it was so weird if I now think about it XD
