Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I have loved dolls my entire life :) I played with baby dolls & still have my childhood dolls. I always wanted a Sindy or Barbie but never got one so I used to play with my brothers Action Men instead

    2. I played with dolls until I was 13 (I wouldn't admit that to just anyone). My teen-age daughter has several SD's that I love knitting and sewing for and spending time together at doll meetups. Perfect.

    3. Nah, for the life of me, I tried: people showered barbies and tea sets me like anything and I felt guilty not caring about it. I had two younger brothers and they frankly got more play time out of those dolls than I did, buttheads. All my girl friends at school would role play with high-pitched voices with the things and I just felt vaguely embarrassed watching them. And then, bam, out of nowhere, I bought a bjd because I thought it looked really nifty and I hold to that opinion to THIS VERY DAY. I am a mature adult, yes.

    4. Did you play with dolls as a child?
Yes, as an "older" child. I was very into stuffed animals when I was young, but when I hit 9/10 I started gravitating almost exclusively towards dolls. It was very embarrassing to me at the time, because I was just then getting into something others my age were beginning to see as babyish.

      Why or why not?
I don't know, honestly! I always made up complex storylines with my stuffed animals and did the same with my Barbies. Maybe the human form just translated better...?

If yes, did your childhood love of dolls get you into BJDs or was it something else?
Yes, this. Once I started collecting dolls, I never stopped. I just acquired more expensive taste. :sweat

    5. I did play with dolls as a child. I mostly had barbies and cabbage patches (dang I'm aging myself! lol) I also had these small type baby dolls that I would use to play babies with, but they weren't in scale with my barbies. They were bigger headed than my barbies and looked more like toddlers. I had one specifically that had two puff ball pig tails and really tight curled hair. She was so pretty. I called her Violet. I don't know what brand dolls these were. They were made like barbies, same plastic and all, but about 5 inches tall. They came just single with the baby and her little outfit. I wish I knew what these dolls were because I want a few again! My mom got rid of all my barbies when we moved to Florida when I was 13. I wasn't really playing with them anymore and she didn't ask if I wanted to keep them. She just got rid of them. I was heart broken. Those were the only dolls though I really played with other than my little pony. I didn't care for those as much.

I think my mom getting rid of my dolls with out asking probably is why I am into dolls now, that and I love what bjds are.

    6. Strangely enough, I mostly played with action figures. I had a couple barbies, but wasn't really interested in them. It might be that I like BJD's because I never had a doll that I really loved as a child, I don't really know.

    7. I have been surrounded by dolls all my life. When we were young, my brother never liked going into my room since he's scared of dolls. I started off having rag dolls since they were affordable back then. After, my grandparents got me barbies whenever they visit, which was not too often. I rarely play with those only when my mom is watching me, fearing I might break them. Most of the time she had it locked up in the cupboard with glass doors so I could only stare at it most of the time. When I grew up and had money, I went nuts and collected barbies, cabbage patches, and some porcelain dolls. When I saw some girl carrying a BJD at a convention, I thought it's something new and so beautiful...and GOT TO HAVE IT!

    8. Oh, definitely! I played with Polly Pocket, Barbie, GI Joe, Bratz, American Girl, you name it--I had it, I played with it, and I still collect a variety of dolls.

    9. I've been playing with dolls, plushes since I was so little until now :)

    10. I had all sorts of dolls like Barbie, Jenny, Porcelain dolls and even some figures that can pose while growing up. Dolls have pretty much been always there during my childhood days even though I also played with other kinds of toys too. So, when I found out about BJDs years ago, I was extra thrilled because of how much more options it offered compared to other kinds of dolls (eyes, wigs, clothes, face and body parts). :fangirl::fangirl::fangirl:

    11. Never. I hated the creepy eyes, the fugleh joints. D:
I played with boys' toys when I was younger. When my relatives gave me Barbie dolls, I usually cut their hair and never touch them again. D:
I only got to appreciate dolls when I started figure collecting.

    12. I had Barbies from when I was a kid well into when I was a teenager. I was self-conscious about it so I never told anyone I still played with them, but I loved to imagine characters for them and try to make clothes for them. I think Barbie was a gateway to roleplaying for me, which is something I am very enthusiastic about. I love doing it, I love being able to express myself in such a pure form. And now, older, I've returned to the doll world because I fell in love with how beautiful they are. They are works of art and more importantly for me, they are a medium through which I can craft existing characters into a visual reality or an outlet to develop new characters through. As a person I love to dress up and try new clothes and combinations and BJDolls just seems a natural extension of my creative expression.

    13. I always had dolls as a child! I think what I had most of were barbies, but I also had the cindy dolls and such... I had a wardrobe stuffed with dolls and clothes and accessories (included the full sized houses, cars and stores) I even had some limited barbies but silly me took them out the box so they're near worthless now.

    14. I've always loved dolls. Also crafts. Especially crafting for dolls. I wasn't allowed to have many though. Not that we were poor, we were middle class but my parents felt we didn't need a lot of toys. It was nice because I bonded with my dolls a lot, but bad because my boy cousins destroyed them and I wasn't allowed new ones. I was also not allowed many crafts as they add up to be pretty pricey I guess. I saved my flyer route money for 2 months to get this Barbie Fashion Designer computer game where you could design clothes and print the patterns on fabric paper to make your own doll clothes. It was awesome. I ran out of fabric in less than a week... Anyways, I always wanted a really high quality collectable fashion doll to love but (you guessed it) I wasn't allowed. Even if I saved money myself they wouldn't order online for me. Which is fine, everyone'd entitled to their opinion and I'm not one to hold grudges but... Guess what mom? I'm 26 and I can buy what I want neener neener lol. At least my husband is cool about it...

    15. I've always played with dolls I think. As a kid I played with barbies and plushies and polly pockets, and then as I got older I started sewing cloth dolls as a hobby, which I still do on occasion. Because of my life long interest it didn't really surprise anyone when I switched to BJDs.

    16. I loved dolls when I was little! But then I didn't care about them at all in my teenage years. Now I'm in my 20s & I love them again. Reverting back to childhood ;)

    17. I loved dolls as a child. I used them to create stories and represent characters-posing them, restyling them and creating clothes for them while making up stories for them. I stopped because I was getting 'too old for dolls'. So my still lingering love for dolls and the artsy aspect of them drew me in over the years until I finally caved and bought one.

    18. I did play with dolls yes. But I only had a couple of dolls and I never had any real Barbies. I wasn't missing them anyway as I much preferred My Little Pony and Barbie horses. My best friend had 40 Barbies though, so I played with her dolls :). But really I was a bit of a tomboy, I loved outdoor play, horseback riding, building lego, helping out at my grandparents farm and plushies ^^.

I can safely say I could not care less anymore about the type of dolls I played with as a child. It's kind of escalated from My Little Pony. I started collecting them in 2010. Via the mlparena I also learned about different dolls and got into Pullips, then Blythe and now finally BJD very recently :). So I figure the ponies are to blame here ^^. I have known about BJD's since 2011 and I even joined the norwegian BJD forum then, but I didn't see a BJD I just had to have until now.

    19. When I was a kid, I hoarded everything from porcelain dolls to American Girl dolls to the actual pocket-sized Polly Pockets, and I played with all of them. I only ever had one baby doll, though, and she was of little interest to me -- I preferred setting up their houses and decorating and dressing them up.

    20. I played with Barbies until I was 10. I've always loved dolls and stuffed animals. I also collected porcelain dolls and rare barbie dolls. My aunt is a barbie collector, so I guess I got that from her.
