Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I couldn't say that I hated dolls when Ii was a child. I just found construction sets and puzzles a lot more fascinating.
I had several dolls as it was natural to have them. I even remember one smallest and simpliest dress that I made for a baby doll.
I was a teenager already when Barbies and similar size dolls appeared in our country. I ask parents to buy me one of them, not the most trendy, nut most unusual, with dark skin and black hair, asian type of face. But I didn't play with it and didn't sew clothes for it.
So it was actually unexpected for myself to get interested in dolls.

    2. I owned a lot of stuff animals when I was little but did not really get into dolls until I was in high school. My older brother influenced a lot of what I did as a kid so dolls were never a part of my childhood. Most the dolls you see for younger kids are pretty bland anyway and those kind of dolls still do not interest me.

    3. Yes, I loved playing :) No stories... just changing outfits...

    4. I always wanted the latest dolls and I always wanted to buy all of the dolls in a particular line and pick my favourite doll, discard the rest of the dolls so I could have just the one doll and all the playset bits. But my family were against that sort of thing. I never actually played. One Christmas, I got a bunch of Polly Pocket stuff and I enjoyed dressing the doll (having discarded the less interesting dolls in favour of that one doll) and making back stories for her and a little world she could live in.
Though I have always found playing make believe with dolls to be a but immature. So I didn't "play" with them as such. But it's just something I never grew out of :)

    5. The dolls were always with me! In childhood, and now, in adulthood I very love dolls. :)

    6. I played with the usual dolls when I was little, Barbies and such. My grandmother gave me those special Holiday Barbies that were kept in the boxes every Christmas. So from a young age I was aware that expensive dolls existed.
And I've always loved dollhouses and small living arrangements, I guess? I remember making a huge house out of Kleenex boxes (I'm talking like, over a dozen boxes of all shapes and sizes used) for my Pokemon toys, with halls and bedrooms and bathrooms and hinged doors and everything!

Though I never really considered any of that to be linked with my love for BJDs until recently when I remembered another doll that I played with, along side my Barbies. She was a What's Her Face doll which has a lot of similarities to a BJD when you look at the customizing aspect of them (she was in no way ball-jointed though, lol). She had a blank face, so you got to draw her face on. She had multiple wigs and clothes that you could buy. She was pretty much a make-your-own Barbie and I remember her being one of my favourite dolls ever. So maybe I really have been into BJDs all along and just never knew it.

    7. I played with a lot of Barbies and Raggedy Anne Dolls growing up, but I was half tom-boy half girly-girl. But I never thought I'd get into BJD's because china dolls scare the crap out of me. Like their seriously creepy to me. So when I got introduced to these I was incredibly shocked at how hooked I got to them.

    8. I loved dolls as a child! I especially loved my barbies, but I had tons of dolls and loved them all. I never stopped. I think my parents thought I would outgrow it, and for awhile I kind of put my love for dolls aside. After meeting my husband though I got right back into collecting and loving different dolls and action figures, eventually leading up to bjds! I have 2 daughters of my own now, and both of them love dolls as well!

    9. When I was really young, I of course got Barbies from family like most girls do ;). Though honestly....I had no particular attachment to them. In fact, the first thing I did was cut off all their hair to see if it would grow back, and to strip them of all their clothes for some reason xD. Then throw them into a sink full of water so all of my shaved Barbies could have a jacuzzi party LOL. I was so weird. I was really scared of those baby-look-alike dolls though! I think my sister ingrained into my head that they were evil.

I did however, have a ton of plushies if those count. I have like 4 heavy duty moving boxes full of them today. However, my fondest memory of playing with dolls/dollhouses was my Sylvanian Family. I loved how I could buy accessories and clothing for them, and create interesting stories (lots of romance! Come to think of it...those stories were quite mature for someone my age xD).

I think I've always like 'collecting' stuff as a child, and my love of creating characters and having stories definitely had something to do with me collecting dolls. It's just so satisfying to see stories come to life :)

    10. When I was little I had a few barbie dolls. I played a lot with them, but always tried to keep their hair nice and tidy and usually kept them dressed.

I also have alot of plushies, just like nkei :) most of them are still around, but my barbies are stored away. I also had one baby like doll, I brought him everywhere... and even gave him some makeup treatments :P

    11. When I was really little I played with polly pockets and fashion polly. There were the occasional Barbies. Other than that, I mainly played with action figures. Then I went into a phase where I didn't like dolls. Now I just love BJDs.

    12. I hated dolls when I was a kid. I was a huge dinosaur geek (still am!) so any doll in the house would inevitably become prey. I still am not into dolls really; BJDs and OOAK polymer clay art dolls are the exceptions.

    13. I used to play with Barbie dolls, but during high school I just started to collect them instead.

    14. Dolls have always been my favorite thing. When I found out that BJD's existed it felt like a whole new life and world had been opened up to me. I knew I wanted to be an adult who play with expensive dolls <3

    15. As a kid I was fanatic with barbies and other dolls. I remember having old suitcase full of them (only barbies in suitcase), all with gently comped hair and carefully picked outfits. And I had LOTS of clothes for them. I'm amazed I have only one BJD with two pair of pants and three shirts now :D

    16. My brother and I were the only children in the family, so we were always suuuper spoiled. I had lots of barbies, some polly pockets, and quite a few american girl dolls as well as lots of stuffed animals/figurines. I played with my barbies very seldom, I really love my American Girls best. I would usually make up stories about me being their struggling mother xD I've always had a wild imagination and came up with creative stories, which helps me decide my dolls personalities now ^^

    17. I played with dolls until I was around 14! I always loved them, even when my friends grew out of playing with them, I still loved them. Then I moved onto anime Nendoroid's and Figma's, and now onto BJD's at the age of 18! I suppose I'm still a child at heart~<3

    18. I grew up in a poor family, so I had very few dolls, though I loved them and played with them ceaselessly. I used to look through American Girl catalogs for hours when I was a child and imagine what it would be like to have one. I think that is why I am such a collector now; because I can buy my own dolls now, I am terribly addicted to doing so!

    19. The funny thing for me is that I never played with dolls as a child, I had a lot of Barbies but I just never touched them. I always thought boys toys were so much cooler.. :sweat

    20. Even if I am not young I do speak to my dolls sometimes ~ mostly when I am angry about the outfits on them :D But I am not playing with them as a child. For me they are something more, something special than a normal toy. They have stories, okay fake, but they have their own feeling ~ so I just let them be ~ and make tons of clothes to them :D
