Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I never had baby dolls but I had a ton of barbies and later bratz and i think they were called my scene? I had those too. I was always way more fond of stuffed animals. I never treated those dolls special or was enamored with them like I am with bjds, though. Weeeeird.

    2. yes of course and I still do, I played with barbies and I still have my doll house :)

    3. I had baby dolls, barbies, dolls that talked/walked/pooped etc. I gave them all to my grandmother, who was a collector, in my teens. When I hit my mid-30's I got nostalgic and started buying dolls on ebay that I'd owned as a kid, so now I have a collection of vintage Cabbage Patch Kids and a few other 70's/80's play dolls. But they just sat on a shelf, I wanted dolls that could do that AND that I could interact with and be creative with. Which is how I ended up here. :kitty1

    4. I loved dolls as a child! Not the baby-ones, but barbies, bratz and similar... I loved to come up with stories, dress them up and everything! :D

    5. I didn't have BJD dolls, but I loved Cabbage Patch and Barbie. I also had a few "talky" dolls where they could eat and drink. I also had a couple porcelain dolls. I also had an American Girl because I /loved/ Felicity. I've always loved dressing them up and making stories with them.

    6. Funny you should mention this. My mother was musing about it one day a few months ago. If I play with BJDs now because I didn't play with dolls as a child. I collected stuffed animals but didnt have a Barbie. I was a tomboy and Barbies were just to pink and cutesy to me. Maybe my inner child wants to come out and play...

    7. Yes, I loved my dolls. I had action figures and dolls, I loved to customize them both by cutting their hair, changing the color of its hair, cutting and fixing the clothes, and anything I could possibly do. I switched the bodies myself and fixed the joints and always found clothes for them. My really old dolls that began losing hair I would make little wigs to go on their heads or comb their hair in a way that covers the bald patches.

    8. I only ever had one baby doll (Tiny Tears--tells you how old I am, LOL!) when I was a kid. Then I discovered Barbie and after that only wanted her and other fashion dolls. Studied fashion illustration, have made hundreds of fantasy and historical costumes and am now turning all experience to BJD's!

    9. I have always loved dolls and i always had a lot of them, but i never really PLAYED with them. i always wanted to make them look pretty and dress them up, and i would create a story in my head. but once they had their beautiful outfit and their hair done i would just leave them sitting on a chair... i guess this means i am more fond of the creative process than anything else xd

    10. I have had dolls ever since I was a baby, with my oldest dolls being Cabbage Patch Kids and Barbies. I have collected and owned several other types of dolls, both baby dolls and fashion dolls since then. I loved to use the dolls to express stories that I made up, and plan to do such with BJDs. I think I can attribute my childhood love of dolls to what inspired me to pursue the BJD hobby.

    11. I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't own a doll that I played with, considered a friend, whose presence comforted and inspired me, who I enjoyed drawing and making clothes for, and who made my life extra joyful just by being his or her dolly self.....so yes, I've always played with dolls, and I guess I still do...;)

    12. I never much cared for dolls when I was little because they were boring to me. I wanted fantasy toys like griffins and dragons, and soldiers. But now that I'm out of college, I suddenly seem to have gone doll crazy. Especially with all the new fantasy options that are out there, it's much more my speed (and lots of boy-dolls, too!)

    13. I actually have more bjds now than barbies back then. I do remember having fun with my barbie house, barbie trailer and other miniature stuff like polly pocket....

    14. Oh good memories. I had a Crissy and a Velvet and I want them back also but MIB. I played with dolls like crazy as a child. I had so many different ones. The smaller dolls were my favorites like, Kiddles, Dawn, Flatsy's, Vinyl Holly Hobbie and Baby Beans. I also had Furga, Effanbee, Madame Alexander and began collecting dolls in the 1980s when I was in 6th grade. Owning BJD's really is just an extention of my appreciation for dolls as a piece of art and costume history. Even play dolls to me tell such a story about society and trends. I love dolls and always have. My mother's dolls are a huge favorite as she played with Alexander-kins and Toni dolls. Dolls have been a wonderful toy for so many decades. Even though I played with dolls a lot, I was often found playing with Hot Wheels as a kid with the boys in the neighborhood. I had a huge range of things I loved to do and I was heavily into sports as well.

    15. I loved everything as a kid, I never discriminated a toy. I had tons of barbie dolls, and action figures, trucks, baby dolls, anything goes. I'm still pretty much the same now when it comes to doll/bjd collecting- if I like it I'm going to have it XD

    16. Hmm.. I remember having a couple of barbies and one or two baby dolls. I had some tiny little baby dolls that I really loved too (quints!). Mostly I had stuffed animals though. I started playing barbies a lot more seriously when I was older to be perfectly honest. It started in about grade 7 I think.... My friend and I would go to her house and play with her barbie stuff for hours. She had the most amazing collection and I was insanely jealous. We did that from about grade 7 like I said until grade 10 maybe. After that I guess we felt too old, although we did still use our barbies to make video projects for our French language classes (and also sometimes for fun...)

So I guess I was a bit of a late bloomer when it comes to dolls

    17. I can't really remember a time not having dolls up to a certain point. For a while it was my He Man Masters of the Universe tiger figure then eventually it was Barbies. When I hit 12 and 13 was when my mom started forcing me away from dolls saying that I was too old for them which was a real shame seeing as that's when I'd found the American Girl dolls. I think the Felicity (I'm pretty sure that's her name anyway) book about her going to a party and her mother getting sick but still making her dress had just come out and that was the one I'd wanted. So after that I had to go doll-less. How bad is that, had to grow up and move out to be able to play with dolls. :P

    18. oh, yes. barbie, barbie, barbie. and I have crissy and velvet (have! I still have all my childhood dolls). I did play with baby dolls when I was really little, but when I got older it was definitely all about the fashion dolls. I love toys. also loved playing with my brother's hot wheels.

    19. Oh, yes, Tiny Tears was one of mine, too (also old). When I outgrew her, it was a Toni doll, then a Madame Alexander. Still have my Madam Alexander.
Now make costumes for my BJD's and love them dearly.

    20. I've always loved dolls, first Barbie, then Tonner's Tyler, then I was drawn to the bjds. Had a rough childhood but now by golly, I have an entire room full of dolls and dollhouses. Hubby bought me a Little Pony today for my Elfdoll June- my dolls NEED stuff! Dolls are just so darn PRETTY, and everyone needs a little bit of pretty in their lives.
