Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I think my interest in dolls has continued because I wasnt allowed to have dolls as a girl, my mom had a phobia so while I played with paper dolls I always dreamt of having my own barbie or american girl doll...my mom even took me to a doll sewing class when I was little to make clothes for dolls I could never have so I think ive always somehow yearned for a doll that I could spoil and dress. I am sure there is something a little psychological about it but hey, I am not hurting anyone! And when I found BJDs I just really liked their versatility and beauty

    2. Barbies in my house usually ended up stripped naked and left careless strewn about the house and garden. Action Man fared better but ultimately suffered the same fate. Me and my sister also ended up with one of those baby doll that cried and we ended up tossing it down the stairs because it wouldn't shut up.

I've uh, become more caring with my dolls since then...

    3. Yes, i did! I had Barbies and robots (my brothers' toys). As I'm the only daughter, my dad felt like I need something girly so he started with Barbies and My Little Pony. I actually don't like Barbies very much because they are boring with their limited ability to pose. I guess Barbies make me love BJDs! In my opinion, BJDs are more flexible and more beautiful! ;)

    4. I played with a a lot of barbies and action figures. :)

    5. My grandma and mom introduced me to Barbies the moment i was born it seemed. I remember having many Barbie related things, the most notable ones were a convertible car and a mobile home van thing. As i got older, my interest in Barbie faded and then my grandma started buying American Girl Dolls which were awesome because they had their own stories and backgrounds. I eventually grew out of those as well and for awhile i didn't really pay much attention to dolls. One day about a year or two (or maybe three), my friend introduced me to BJDs and my love for dolls has returned and increased immensely because of how creative you can be with the dolls in fashion, faceups, stories, etc.! :)

    6. I had barbies but I don't think I was too into them. I had a cowboy one and the one where the hair "grows back". Really all it was, was a hair piece with some velcro that stuck to the back of the head. Me being stupid thought it'd look just the same after cutting her hair and putting the extra hair piece on. I cut off ALL her hair. She was bald from the top with a hairpiece stuck on the back  Yea, I didn't like her too much after that.

I was more into stuffed animals. I have a Hello Kitty and Pochacco beanie dolls that I played with a lot. I sewed them clothes and bags and played all sorts of role plays with them. They had a casual outfit, a formal outfit, and even a wizard's robe, hat, bag, wand, and clothes trunk (made from cardboard and construction paper) from when I started getting into Harry Potter :D

I was also into Polly Pockets, not sure if that really falls into the same category though...

    7. I love dolls since... ever ! First I had small dolls, then lead soldiers, then I made my dolls myself with fabrik, then barbies, for whom I made full houses with anything I found.

I grew up and forgot it... Later I had 3 girls, and bought them dolls, mainly from Corolle ( they are beautiful and strong !), but they didnt pay much with them...

Sometimes, I bought for myself some cheap dolls, but I was allways frutrated with them: they were not classy enough, or too childish. And one, day, looking for some nice doll: tadaaaam, BJDs !!! It was last year... ( and I'm 52... long wlak to paradise...)

    8. I was really girly, but I only played with video games no dolls at all
Even now I'm a gamer and I love bjd :)

    9. I loved playing with all kinds of dolls when I was little.
I used to take my dolls everywhere even for bath time!! Haha :)
I had this phase though where I felt the need to cut their hair and dress them up as goths... I guess that kind of helped my face up skills now? Hah.

    10. Definitely played with dolls as a child, I had an over active imagination so there was always some adventure going on with my barbies (My little brother used to join in, he was adorable okay). I've since kind of fallen out of love with barbies for a few reasons, their lack of joints always frustrated me as a kid, especially after my parents bought me an Esmerelda Barbie Doll from the disney movie. She actually had joints and became my go to for adventures XD

    11. I was obsessed with dolls as a child, but quickly stopped playing with them as I got older out of embarrassment and shame.
However, I moved onto action figures and as my interest in Anime and Manga developed I reconnected with the doll hobby
and now I collect all kinds of east-asian dolls, my focus mostly on BJDs.

    12. Hated dolls as a child, had fear of baby dolls and put my barbies in the microwaves.
Not sorry, they were ugly to me ~

      Things can change :3

    13. I have always loved dolls, not baby dolls, but things like Barbies and Bratz and I had copious numbers. I still have them all because I cannot bear to throw them away. I was also really into porcelain dolls and I have a collector's edition Barbie. Basically I have always been into dolls and BJDs are just the best.

    14. I played with Barbies as a kid and I was always trying to do their hair and change their clothes and then I grew out of it and for a long while I really thought BJDs were creepy >_> until my roommates started getting into the hobby and I found the beauty in them! So now here I am haha... however the price tag is a bit daunting ^^;;;

    15. I for sure played with dolls as a child. it was an escape for me a fantasy world. I think that informed my adult love for them as I have never stopped collecting dolls.

    16. My sister (2 years younger) and I shared a room for 14 years. We played with every type of kids doll made, Barbie, Little Kiddles, Flatsies, Dawn. We made up stories and acted out elaborate plots, pulling storylines from book and TV shows and Soap Operas. Our older sister often made clothes for our DAWN dolls (about half the size of Barbies, and softer/more rubbery) out of ribbon, found fabric and even socks! I played Barbies with my daughter in the 90's. Now I am into BJD's, courtesy of my daughter. I make clothes for her dolls, as she has lots of ideas, but no sewing skills. I have a couple dolls to use as models, as we live several hours away, now.

    17. I never liked playing with Barbies, Bratz, etc. I've always really into fiction/fantasy and my imagination always ran wild with anything related to fantasy. So I always played with either Legos or Action figures from either cartoons (Gargoyles, Transformers, Spiderman, Justice League, Batman, Beyblade, etc), video games, movies, etc.

    18. I used to play with Barbie dolls when I was little...they always ended up bald though since I would play hairdresser. I'm pretty sure I got tired of them pretty quickly because of that. After that phase I was scared of dolls. Baby dolls were creepy (especially the ones that opened and closed their eyes). And any of those porcelain dolls just gave me nightmares. I could not stand looking at those things. When I was a teenager I discovered BJDs and was really creeped out. When I found out that people could actually take out their eyes and stuff too I was really bothered by them.

I'm pretty sure it was around that time I started showing them to my family and we all talked about how creepy and expensive they were. Not sure when but somewhere along the line I decided I wanted one. Probably just to freak people out. I don't know. Things change and now I really like them. They just all look so cool.

    19. Yes, I always played with dolls. My favorite were my Sailor Moon dolls and Bratz dolls.
I never really grew out of them (obviously).
I tried hiding my love for them when I got into jr. high and high school. But when Monster High dolls came out I started collecting those.
Now I've gotten into bjds (my dream dolls all along) and I'm doomed. lol.

    20. Hahaha that thread is interesting!
I didn't quite like dolls when I was a kid, I had lots of Barbies that people kept buying me for birthdays and stuff, but I ended up playing with them for like a week and they spent the rest of their lives in a box. Instead I was going towards crafty stuff like drawing, jewellery making, sewing... So my parents were quite surprised when I started to actually buy dolls! I think it has more to do with the creative side of it, being an artist, rather than impersonating some kind of character and play with it I guess.
