Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I totally played with all different kinds of dolls and figures as a child and have fond memories of it. I didn't know I would still be playing with dolls well into my 30's, though! ;)

    2. I've always loved dolls, but most of my friends were bored by them and thought they were kind of silly and useless. There was one girl in my neighborhood who would play with me in secret. She was a year older, and I wasn't allowed to talk about dolls when any other kids were around. :XD: But I've always had a variety of dolls, and went right from playing with them to "collecting" them.

    3. Yes, but I was a doll loving girl in the late 50's and 60's. I had the first Barbie and Ken. Wish I still had her and him, but oh well. So yeah, it was part of the culture to have dolls (back in the pre-computer days, and definitely pre-color TV). Had to have something to do other than coloring books with crayons when we weren't outside playing.

Have the doll I bought for myself when I was 13, she will be 50 this year - yikes!

    4. So. Did you play with dolls as a child?
Yes, mostly barbies and similar. I was never a big fan of baby born dolls and similar.
      Why or why not?
Well, as a girl, you often get dolls for toys. I preferred barbies and the like, because I could get my imagination flowing, pretending to be someone else.
If yes, did your childhood love of dolls get you into BJDs or was it something else?
No, it was my friend actually. Fun fact: my favorite doll was a Sindy Ziplining version which had jointed knees! I didn't really like her face or anything (Barbie brandsl*t) but she was the only doll that could sit and thus ride my Barbie horse who also had jointed legs. I loved the mobility.

    5. I did... I had a Barbie house... car.. I had 10 babies and a Kelly Tommy and Ken... I also had bratz

    6. I did! I'm an only child, and the only grandchild on my mother's side. Being a girl meant, not only did I get all the presents, I also got a wide variety of toys to make up for lack of brothers. I had Barbies and Bratz that I put in a Tonka truck and scooted around the house with them.

Ironically enough, my dolls then ended up similar to my dolls now: they spent most of their time naked.

    7. Not really.
Despite having lots of Barbie dolls when I was young, I never liked them. Maybe because Barbie looked too cheap to me.
I personally view BJD as artistic decorations instead of a toy to play with.

    8. I played with all kinds of dolls as a kid. I even tried to mod them. Like I tried to make a Little Mermaid doll when I was young and saw the movie but Disney had yet to make a doll. Uh...it didn't come out too well XD And as soon as Disney released the official doll, I bought her. I had lots of other barbies and dolls I "customized" into my own characters.

I think my love of BJD's stemmed from the re-awakening of the love of dolls in me I got out of dolls and into ponies. Only recently, in the last 4 years have I been into dolls. I saw BJD's at a con and fell I love but resisted for another 2 years because I was afraid I could never afford one.

    9. Strangely, no.. i collected dolls when i were younger (porcelain or collectible barbies) but never played with them, cars and 'boy's toys' on the other hand, i had and played with every day. :3

    10. No. I just collect it

    11. I definitely had a lot of barbies when i was a child, although i never really 'played' with them. I just remember giving all of them hair cuts and changing their outfits everyday. I guess that sort of influenced me to get into the bjd hobby, since bjds are a lot more customizable than barbies are.

    12. I actually never did! I was a total tom boy as a kid, playing with toy cars and things :P But when I turned 15 suddenly I turned into a child again and started buying Barbies!! And now... well I've moved on from Barbies at least, I'm still totally doll obsessed!! I used to love Bratz dolls too. Still a fan of Monster High.

    13. I LOVED dolls as a child baby dolls barbie dolls bratz dolls

    14. I loved playing with dolls as a child! Not even my fear of Chucky could stop my love for dolls. I wasn't a huge fan of baby/toddler dolls thiugh. I mostly had Barbies, a few rag dolls and a porcelain doll. As I grew older, Disney, Bratz, My Scene, Monster High and Pullips joined my collection. So it really wasn't a surprise that I eventually became interested in BJDs.

    15. I hated dolls as a child. I refused to enter a room that had dolls in them. All the dolls I had where banned from my room when I went to bed. I'm still terrified of most dolls, but BJD's are somehow different. I love them to pieces and aren't scared of them in the slightest.

    16. I always lost the interest to my dolls very fast, because they were too immobile to me >___< It was annoying when you had the wish to play with them and they couldn't move like you want, because they had to less movable joints... Maybe that's the reason why I really love to play with my BJDs' now, looks like I have to catch up my unsatisfactory childhood regarding dolls ;)

    17. Like a bunch of people I've seen post here I didn't actually play with dolls much when I was little. I think that's interesting since all of us are into dolls now. But when I was really little I wasn't interested in baby dolls or barbies or things like that like most little girls. I just didn't get what most girls liked about them. I was given a few but they were mostly neglected in favor of stuffed animals or littlest pet shop animals which I was much more into. I've always been really into animals so that's why I think I found human dolls to be less interesting. As I got older I started to like dolls a bit more, I had a couple barbies who would be the owners for my littlest pet shop pets. And I was kind of obsessed with looking at the american girl catalogs, but not really for the dolls so much as for the miniature accessories that went with them.

When I got old enough to collect things I started collecting teddy bears, stuffed animals, and miniatures. My mom and grandma were always really into dolls, mostly antique ones, and while I've always liked the ones they have for the historical aspect and the pretty clothes I was never *that* into them. But there is just something about BJDs that has taken over my heart. And I don't really collect teddy bears or other things anymore because I'm really focused on BJDs.

    18. Yes! I always had a lot of Barbies as a kid. I've never stopped loving dolls, in fact. I collect mahou shoujo dolls, too.

    19. Yep! I had barbies and my little ponies. I used to get one of those holiday barbies every year back in the day lol

    20. I also had barbies when I was younger. I liked books more than other kids so having the barbies was good interaction for me. I played with/ collected them even well into high school (though I didn't tell people about it back then). I think having them back then did kind of lead me into the hobby since when I was younger I was alway trying to cut/ style my barbies hair. I also made clothes for them a lot. For years I didn't play with dolls but when I found out about bjds my interest was hooked instantly. It took years. Before I actually decided to buy one though, since the price is so high.
