Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

1. I played with dolls...but also dinosaurs? I was a weird kid haha, I played with them both together (my Barbie was married to a T-rex!). Maybe that explains why I like monster dolls today....

2. Yes I had tonnes of Barbies, I've always been fascinated with doll houses and their tiny furniture. I've always liked dolls :)

3. Not with baby dolls or anything beyond Barbie. My sister and I had so much Barbie stuff, and for what we didn't have for them, we made or used our imagination.

4. I had so many dolls its not even funny. I always had specific characters for each of them. But I was also the kid who could kick butt at all the racing games as well. I've only got the American Girls now, and my grandmother's antique Madame Alexander doll, but I think they played a pretty large part in the reason why I got into BJDs in the first place.

5. I played with Barbies and my brother's GI Joe's, and one of my Barbies was in a serious relationship with his Buzz Lightyear. (I played with it more than he did!) I haven't been able to really play with any of my dolls since my first is just a floating head for now and my second is still on layaway, but I imagine it would be very, very different. What attracted me to the hobby was the customization aspect, so I can't see myself doing anything close to what I did as a child, but I already have two characters lined up to be shelled who are dating. So who knows. ;)

6. Yes, I use to play with my cousins Spice Girl and Barbie collection all the time. I adored them all! Also, I remember doing my own version of a face up, with permanent marks. lol! As you probably guessed, they looked horrible. :sweat

7. Yes, still I have a lot of barbie dolls in my mother´s house XD

8. Actually, no. Dolls really creeped me out when I was a child. I preferred plushies.

9. No, not really. I was into cars and marbles since most of my playmates were male cousins. My sister had a huge Barbie collection though... and I was unfortunately the terrible younger sibling that would mess up her dolls when I was very young. XD

I didn't hate dolls or anything though (not sure why I vandalized some, but that was before I can remember), they just didn't really call to me as a child. I did have a stuffed bunny though and I took good care of him.

In my teens I did start collecting figures and I think this is what opened the door for things like BJDs, especially since I got mine because I wanted to dress him up like characters.

10. No! No I didn't! Oddly, I hated dolls. I was an all around tomboy, and played with boy toys, dragons and plastic animals. Anything relating to girl stuff was just not an interest to me.

That being said, I think I became interesting in this hobby because of the art aspect. I painted miniatures, sculpted, sewed cosplay, and these dolls just seem to encapsulate EVERYTHING that I've been doing on and off for years. I can't wait to get my first doll and start this journey.

11. I was deathly afraid of dolls when I was younger, but I've always loved plushies and barbie movies >.<. Just a couple years ago I suddenly had an interest for dollies. I think it's because they had a sudden change in style for me, like the monster high dolls.(Not super girly/ pink) Now I appreciate all doll types better, and I really like the aesthetics+customization of the bjd ^.^

12. I just loved playing with barbies when i was a kid! Any kind of figure came to like in my imagination. I also had a collection of porcelan dolls ! I gave them up in a garage sale :x

13. I'm old enough to remember the 70s dolls but not sure I remember the exact ones you are describing... I've always loved dolls... not really Barbies per se, I always wanted one of the really fancy porcelain dolls with the huge puffy dresses, the ones in the Sears catalog)... now not so much... I think BJDs are everything I want in a doll: realistic (yet really beautiful); play-with-able (the way I "play"); customizable (wigs, eyes, clothes, even skin color, other factors).

14. I had dolls as a child but I always preferred stuffed animals over them. (Still a sucker for soft cute animals) Ironically it wasn't until I was older that I liked dolls again. I started to like Dal's from the Pullip and Monster High just because they were so different from other dolls I had as a kid. I think that's why I decided to start the bjd hobby, because everything about this hobby is based on creativity.

15. I loved action figures more than dolls. My Grandma used to make dolls and collect them tho, and I did like looking through her collection, even if they just sat there on the shelves.
So the BJD seems to be a mixed love from my childhood. The beautiful look of the dolls my grandma had and made, but something I could play with and pose like my action figures.

16. I had dolls as a child and played with my cousin. She had so many dolls and so many clothes. I enjoyed putting their outfits on the most. I don't even know where they went. It's like they just went missing in my life and I never cared to get another 'til I saw bjds. I have never wanted a doll so much before. There are just so many things you can do with them and I feel like it makes you more attached to them that way. Certain dolls still scare me but bjds to me are just lovely and even the "creepy" ones are beautiful. (I love plushies and barbie movies too JayO)

17. I never liked barbies as a kid because I thought they were overrated. Everyone had one and I wanted to be different! (I was that horrible kid who pulled all the heads off her barbies and leave decapitated bodies all around the house). I loved Polly Pockets though because they had so many different clothes and rooms you could put them in. But to be honest, I played with stuffed animals and toy horses much more than I did with dolls. Of course, now I love dolls!

18. I guess you can say I "played" with dolls as a child. Most of them ended up dismembered though by the time I was 11, all except a few. My barbies got chopped up into bits, and scattered in the backyard, buried in various spots, and then I would play "crime solver" with the body parts. Before that part of my life, I did play quite frequently with dolls, and had wild, vivid and colorful stories regarding their lives.
i had always wanted to make beautiful doll clothes, which ended up leading me into this hobby, since a lot of dolls just didn't have what I needed so I could make clothes for them easily.

19. I played with dolls alright, but it usually involved Barbies getting horrid haircuts, and being dismembered or decapitated by myself and some of my
neighborhood friends. This was obviously much to the disdain of my sister who was the owner of these dolls. That is, until she joined in on the
destruction. LOL
However, at some point, I liked playing with the dolls with my sister so that they could have cool adventures, or have one be the villain, and the other
be the hero. I suppose the role-playing aspect started early for me. haha

One of my family friends must have had a sixth sense, or maybe a premonition of sorts, as he got me a Ken doll for Christmas a long while ago.
Needless to say, my mom wasn't totally too pleased with his present. LOL (At that time, neither was I; I was more into my gameboy pocket and such)

However, I wouldn't say that playing with dolls got me into the BJD hobby. It was more of the customization aspect and shelling characters that really
hooked me. That, and the sheer beauty of BJDs. o:

20. Dolls were my favorite as a kid. I think my love for bjd's partially comes from that but also because they are so unique and I love that you can change them up so much!
