Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. My Barbies ran an orphanage of abused Heart Family children and Quints dolls. My sister and I always played together and our dolls led very dramatic soap opera lives. We also always tried to sew our own doll clothes. We always made our own paper dolls too. I wouldn't say I was a girly girl growing up, but I was a really imaginative kid and play was always very elaborate no matter what it was. I didn't choose most of my toys growing up or it was always a guided choice, which I think is really kind of a mistake since toys are important to development and there are a lot of things I would've preferred to play with. I was happy when I could finally get some lego sets instead of it always being for my brothers. Legos were always my favorite.

    2. Wait, so paper dolls weren't a thing only with my mom?

    3. Yes! I played with dolls till I was in middle school! I beleive this is what got me into the Bjd collecting

    4. Paper dolls can be whatever you want them to be, so that was fun for us. We even made them bedrooms out of shoe boxes. They had lives detailed in notebooks. One of my paper dolls slept in a construction paper coffin, haha.. I have only good memories of paper dolls.

    5. I miss paperdolls now.
Mom has some in her table. She was the one drawing them.
She said its from Russia xD

    6. I played with a few Barbies and Polly Pockets growing up~ I loved all their outfits~ xD I ended loving Anime and eventually some good friends of mine got me into BJDs~

    7. Love this thread!

Like the OP, I hated dolls as a child, so much so that many of them still freak me out to this day (especially the little baby dolls you're supposed to feed). Strangely though, I adored Barbies, must have had 50 or so. Not sure why, but the story seems to be repeating itself. While I now have two MSDs, I am currently amassing 1/6 Azone dolls, which, to me, are high-quality Barbies. Not really, but...well..yeah, the similarities are there - at least in my mind.

    8. Yes! Always loved dolls since I can remember

    9. I actually did not. I preferred to play with toy animals - Littlest Pet Shop, My Little Pony, stuff like that. I did become interested in playing with Barbie dolls when they came out with a Barbie Veterinarian set, ha! Go figure. I also collected miniature horses.

Babydolls weren't my thing, really. Always wondered why but never really knew - I think, actually because most toy baby dolls do not look real enough. I remember as a teen I saw a very realistic looking baby doll that I really wanted to play with, but it was hundreds of dollars, behind a glass encasement - not for kids to play with at all.
Perhaps might be the reason why I like BJDs - because they look really real.

    10. I didn't really like barbies when I was little, I felt they looked mature and old lol. But I fell in love with a kind of doll called babyface! XD I had to buy the red one, it was too cute! Seems like even as a child I had strong preferences for what style of dolls lol, no wonder I jumped into the dolly collecting hobby when I started working and could afford one~ XD

    11. I played with Barbies when I was little. Tea parties and everything.

    12. I did! I had oodles of Barbies when I was a kid. Throughout my teenager/young adult phase, however, I began to dislike dolls. I still loved toys and I collected Pokemon and MLP, but no dolls. Never dolls. Dolls were creepy.

Once I became interested in dolls, it wasn't a big deal for me. I was already married and I don't put too much stock in how I was in the past. That was then, this is now. It did surprise me a bit that I would become so interested in this hobby, but when I think back on it, I realize I really did always enjoy dolls to some degree. Having dolls that can express me, my personality and the things I enjoy is so far up my alley!

    13. I did not have dolls as a child. Except for an ugly blonde sexless doll with stupid blue eyes, and also bald plastic baby doll... So I had no idea what to do with them. At the first time I saw Barbie I was already 30 years old and my daughter was 7. Actually this Barbie was her doll. And now, many years later, I have ordered my very first BJD, and still trying to figure out what am i thinking about...

    14. I hated dolls when I was a little girl; I loved playing with the kids games kids

    15. Barbie yes, but my barbies dated my kiss dolls never ken. Haha. Never had a baby doll I thought they were too scary.

    16. I certainly did, although I was more into 'figurine' type dolls that were smaller and could hold a pose, as opposed to all the baby dolls who fed from a bottle and wet their nappies that so many of my friends liked. I think even back then a part of me knew I was never going to be maternal and was already heading more toward the 'collector' things, lol.

    17. I never liked dolls as a child. My parents bought me a couple of barbies, but I didn't really know what to do with them. I loved all kinds of animal plushies though and I had several LEGO Belville sets, if anybody remembers what they were. They had little figurines with multiple joints, larger and more poseable than regular LEGO mini figures. I spent a lot of time playing with them and bulding houses for them.

    18. I played with barbies, tho I preferred to play with my horse statues. The barbies were primarily because it was easier to dress them up, which was the main draw for me. The rest of normal doll playing things I wasn't too horribly interested in.

    19. Oh yea I was a big time Barbie and Bratz fan. I played with a lot of stuffed animals but in the end me and Barbie did everything together. I took that doll literally everywhere I went. My sister naturally had one as well so we would make houses and create stories for them. It was only natyral that I would love Bjd and then grow to create stories for Bjd.

    20. I've had dolls ever since I was probably 2. I always had about 50 doll that I played with when I was much younger. I still have all of my old dolls now because I was too attached to them to get rid of them.
