Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. That is a good question! I was a child from the seventies and, unfortunately, I wasn't allowed to have dolls or toys for that matter. So I was just a boring stereotype girl who loved dolls. When my mum went shopping, I would run to the toy section and stare at the equivalent of Barbies of the time in Brazil, where I was brought up. They were called Suzi.

I was given a doll once, but it was stored away so I wouldn't break it and years later, I found her in pieces because the batteries were left inside and eventually exploded.

But this sad story has a happy ending because now I have (almost) as many dolls I could ever dream.

      :)

    2. I was like the OP. Hated dolls as a kid. Huge tomboy. At 16 or 17 I saw BJDs and feel in love! :D My daughter is 2 and loves Barbies. She won't have a BJD like mine until she is at least 13 and can help pay for it. :)

    3. I was absolutely terrified of dolls! When I was seven a large shelf full of porcelain dolls (the heavy ones) fell on top of me and I was pinned to the floor, so I hated them. Then I saw bjds and well... Is gotten out of hand.

    4. ...sort of. My sister was really into fashion dolls (Barbie, Bratz, etc.), and I used to take the ones she didn't want and turn them into frankendollies--mostly to get more articulation. I took jointed arms from one doll, and move them to a doll with a more flexible stomach and then add jointed legs from another doll. I melted off quite a few factory-painted faces to repaint them with smaller eyes and lips. I guess this is probably why I like the customizability of BJDs

    5. I had a Barbie problem as a child. I had amassed more than 75 Barbies, Skippers, and Kens at one point. I hated baby dolls though, and I once tried to flush one of my Cabbage Patch Kids down the toilet. He was one of the "Premie" dolls and didn't have any hair. Ugh, he also smelled like baby powder. I didn't mind the CPKs with hair as much. Just never been into babies. I also had a miniature doll house and collected porcelain bride dolls when I got a little older. I've always been into dolls :)

    6. I played with Barbies as a kid!! Then I saw monster high and I remember collecting all the original ones and other versions!!:)

    7. Yes I liked to play with dolls. I had one baby doll that I liked a lot, and I played with barbies but they weren't my favorite. for the most part I played with stuffed animals.

    8. I had some dolls as a kid, but I wasn't too into them. My doll collecting started as a teenager when I got a plushie of a game character. I have a pretty good collection of plush dolls as well as BJDs.

    9. I played with dolls when I was younger and a little bit nearing my tween years; however, I started collected them when I got older.

    10. Yes I did play. my mom bought a beautiful German doll with long blonde hair, her hair was gettting shorter and shorter every year, outfits were getting more mature, so she grew with me, then my sister played with her. I suppose doll ha a good life :-)

    11. I collected Barbie, Sindy and My Little Pony.

    12. Honestly, I did. I had some Barbies that I got from my Cousins since they were 'too old for them'. Also I had three differently sized Chou Chou Dolls and some other 'baby-like' dolls. Also I had some Polly Pocket Dolls once. But I combined playing with the dolls with playing with toy cars or other things. I never was 'just girly'. XD The Barbie dolls honestly never survived long. Their heads were pulled off while playing accidentally or their legs destroyed. Hair was cut. I didn't walk around with my little best friend Barbie being like 'Looooook, she's so beautiful'.
I enjoyed the 'baby-like' kind of dolls more to play with as a child because I always adored little children and did take care of them just like a real mother would do. =3 I even still own the smallest of my three Chou Chou Dolls and it's always sitting on the shelf above my bedsite table. <3 And another one of my 'baby-like' dolls also sits on a shelf in my room, kept it because it was by far my favourite. X3
All other dolls from my childhood were given to an orphanage or something like that some years ago because I did not play with them anymore anyways and they just were in the way.
And then I discovered BJDs and was unable to resist the urge to create some of my characters as Dollies~

    13. When I was a kid I played a lot with dolls, especially with barbies. But now I do not play with dolls in the same way, I prefer to customize them, sewing clothes manually. It is an activity that relaxes me and entertains a lot! :)

    14. When I was a kid I had some Bratz dolls. I was pretty reckless though and often liked to rip off their arms or cut their hair (We're talking really young here) When I was a bit older I liked to use paper and tape to mod their legs into fish tails haha. I stopped playing with them when I was....maybe.. between 6 and 10?

    15. Not really, I never really liked most human dolls. I had a few, though. There was this talking one that I used to have that I really loved, but I was extremely young and don't remember what it even was. But I've always loved stuffed animals. That's probably why I'm more drawn to anthro dolls.

    16. I was never into Barbie or other dolls I was all about stuffed animals and action figures (and still am!) I also got into Monster High dolls a few years back.

    17. I've always played with dolls when i was little.
Ik had a lot of barbie dolls and i still own my favorite ones.
Also my grandmother used to collect all these pretty porcelain dolls.

    18. My family moved around a lot so it was hard for me to make friends and my sister never wanted to play with me, sooo I played with my dolls a bunch! I collected porcelain dolls Jem (does that date me or what?!) and Barbie and pretty much whatever else I found pretty or interesting. My mom would sometimes provide some social interaction and play with me. That was fun :) Anyways, I have to thank all of that for my very vast, vivid, and creative imagination!

    19. I had a hoard of Barbie dolls growing up. My friends and I would play with them, mostly making up stories or trying to replicate characters from TV. I even made props and beds for them, though it was never really extravagant (I was young and loved using glue and Popsicle sticks). I also had several American Girl Dolls, I would play with them differently; brushing their hair, dressing them up, and tea parties. I am not sure why I played with dolls, but my favorite form of play was always using my imagination and pretend.

My dolls haven't arrived yet, but, I guess one of the reasons why I decided to get into this hobby is because I really loved the creative outlet playing with my dolls as a child provided. I look forward to the customization aspect and making clothing/props.

    20. Same here, I had hoard of barbies too, especially blond ones even if the only dark barbie of mine was my most loved doll. I never played tea-party way though, it was always some kind of teen drama style reality barbie plays with my friends X'D
