Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I had a ton of Barbies but I HATED other dolls. I would rather have played with my billion plastic animals, dinosaurs and stuffed animals. Mom used to take me to craft stores a lot and I would always look at the miniatures. I've always loooooved anything tiny and realistic and posable. My grand parents had extremely realistic doll house displays that I would lose it over.

    2. Yes, I loved play with dolls, always. Now that Im grow up, I play but of course in different way.... Sometimes I image them to talks to me , and we discuss or I bring them with me while I eat tea or sweets etc.

    3. I hated dolls as a child. I always wanted stuffed animals and coloring books.

    4. Quetz I'm much like you and didn't play with dolls when I was a kid. It's good to see there are many of us that grew up without dolls and love them now! I thought I was the only one, LOL! My parents never bought me dolls and I do remember yearning for a doll as a child but never having a chance to play with them. I remember once my cousin was trying to get me to play with her and her Barbie but I just didn't know what to do! I fell in love with dolls just recently and like you the customization and artistry is what has drawn me to them now. I love that they can be as individual as a person if you want them to be and you can make them into whatever character fits your story. Now I'm addicted to my new hobby and spend most of my "extra" money on dolls and doll things. I can't say that I feel self-conscious about my new hobby since it was introduced to me by a friend that loves the and we go to parks to photograph them in cool scenery. Yea people may look at us funny but we just ignore them, LOL!!! It's so much fun and I love it though! I also love meeting new people that like dogs whether in person or in cyberspace

    5. Yes, I played with dolls as a child. I didn't play with them excessively or exclusively. I think the most I played with dolls was when I had barbies around 11. I love BJD's because of anime. It wasn't because of doll playing in my past. For some reason, for me, the two interests are intertwined.

    6. I had a few barbies I think but my brothers destroyed those quickly, what I really had was a lot of beenie babies, also tamogatchi plushes so those were big for me on car trips. Also for a good few years I had quite the hamtaro set, I know it got so big for me that the giant doll house my grandma made for me I would let all of the ham ham squad inhabit the dollhouse and I would tuck all 22 of them in bed every night then in the morning I would wake them up and put them somewhere active in the rooms.

    7. I didn't like dolls when I was a child. It was boring to play with them

    8. I played with dolls. I always wanted something more unique though. I was happy when I stumbled into this hobby.

    9. I played with barbies and baby borns until I was 6 or 7. After that I collected and played with Pokemon figures all the time as well as Diddle plushies... :3
I've always been a collecter... Pokemon figures/trading cards, Diddle stuff, vintage napkins, paper, anime figures/anime/mangs merchandise etc. and now also bjds :)

    10. While I have always collected dolls, I didn't generally "play" with them. Displayed and changed yes but didn't play with them.

    11. Nope. When I was a child, I played with lego and toy cars. (Yes, as weird as it may seem, I am a girl)

    12. Yes, I loved dolls and played with them alot =D

    13. Actually no. Lol I was too much of a tomboy and hated dolls. Haha, which is why I felt so awkward getting into the hobby now. Lol

    14. As with many other things from my childhood, it's complicated.

When I was a baby, my parents got me a beautiful set of nesting dolls--not the nasty cheap knockoffs that don't fit together right, but the genuine article with a stamp of authenticity from the then-USSR on the bottom. I still have those dolls, and nothing would ever possess me to part with them--when I was 3, I left one doll's upper half on the floor, and my dad stepped on it. I SCREAMED until he got out the glue and put her back together for me. There are 7, and I would pretend that the biggest one was the mother, and all the other dolls were sisters. Sometimes I'd pretend just the top halves were people, and would stack the bottom halves to make a pyramid "house." I'd pretend that the "baby" of the set had wandered off and gotten lost, and had the fairy My Little Ponies find her and help her find her way back home.

My mom also tried to get me to play with Barbies. This didn't meet with much success--mainly because my parents never got me any of the playsets or profession dolls, so instead of "Barbie does Gymnastics" or "Barbie Goes To Space," the adventures modeled for me were "Barbie Tries On Pretty Clothes" or "Barbie Puts On A Swimsuit And Lies Around By The Pool" (my same-age cousin and I weren't really sure what teenagers did, but she wanted play to be "realistic," so we basically had them sitting around looking pretty, which bored me to tears).

If it hadn't been for American Girl, I might have given up on dolls forever! I loved the idea of dolls from history, and being able to put them in clothes and use pretend furniture that real people would have used back then. My Felicity was my best friend for years--I even slept with her for a long time! I loved her stories and her personality, and felt like we would have been best friends if she'd been a real person.

My parents didn't like me having toys around as I got into my teens. The Magic Trolls, the stuffed animals, the My Little Ponies--pretty much everything except the keepsakes like Felicity and the Russian dolls--all got thrown away or donated to Goodwill. If I did anything immature, or let my dad find out that I was watching anime (for people my own age, not even kids' anime), he'd make fun of me and tell me I was "regressing." It was awful, because my social skills were never very good, so toys were a major source of comfort during a lot of friendless periods in my life.

It was my now-husband who encouraged me to not be afraid of still liking my old toys, and to pursue hobbies based on what would make ME happy, instead of what other people would think. So I bought back all the old My Little Ponies from my childhood collection (and then some!), bought and customized a few vinyl dolls, and am now patiently waiting to order my first resin-baby! (Hubby suggested, since it's such an expensive doll, that I wait a week or 2 before ordering, just to make sure I still want her and it's not just an impulse purchase. Given my ADHD, that's probably a good idea!)

    15. No, I didn't play with dolls. I was far more interested in dinosaurs and later, pokemon figures. It came as a surprise to me when I found I liked BJDs, they're the first dolls I've ever really liked.

    16. I liked dolls. My favorite by far was my little pony (I had tons, all of them second gen), but I also had some pollypockets (the 90's kind, choking hazard ahoy) and a couple of inherited Nancy dolls, which are the only ones that can be considered similar to bjds.
I also wanted to get barbies and action man, but my mother disapproved of both.

    17. My Little Pony and] the 1st-gen Polly Pocket? Hello, near-age-mate! :3

It's still weird to me to go through toy stores (gotta find those doll clothes) and see Polly Pocket the size she is now. It used to be the playset that fit into your pocket, not just the doll...

    18. Yessss! Barbies at first then it went to Bratz and now I occasionally play with my step sister's Monster High dolls.

    19. I used to play with licca jenny dolls which I still collect today x)

    20. I only played with dolls because my cousins and sister did. If not, I probably never would have touched them lol. I got into BJDs for their beauty, mobility, and because they are an ongoing art project ^^
