Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. I had dolls, but they were all far away from realistic. It wasn't an easy time when I was growing up, we didn't have much money, good toys were an exception and I always used to wish for some really, really beautiful dolls :) I remember one girl in the kindergarden brought in a Barbie, and it was such an event that day, all kids boys included gathered around and were observing that doll :lol: I think that's why I ended buying myself some dolls when I got elder and could afford them. Answer's simple - I'm fulfilling my childhood's dreams :sweat

    2. O, sometimes I even take photo-stories :)

    3. I did. With Barbies and a huge doll I cant remember the name. When I started playing with BJD's, I'm a child at heart again. :D

    4. Did you play with dolls as a child?
      Yes, but I stopped for a couple of years when I was 6 years old. I tried to continue playing several times but I tought it was pointless and boring. I started again for a short while when I was around 10-11 but I didn't really play with them, just change clothes and sew a little for them.

      Why or why not?
      Explained.

      If yes, did your childhood love of dolls get you into BJDs or was it something else?
      Something else. When I first saw a bjd, at 13, I tought they were the prettiest things I ever saw. While I didn't play that much with dolls(barbies, babydolls and the like) as a kid I loved action figures and collectible figurines and bjds kind of reminded me of those. The most important factor for me with bjds at the time were that they were asian (I loved anything Japanese) and the customization. I'm not a semi-wapanese anymore though so now I just collect because I see them as art, a way to shell my characters and in a way they're an escape from everyday-annoying things.

    5. Since I kid I own barbies (even until now) and I loved them ^-^ I love fashion thingy also cute things. I spent my time most of time with dolls since I don't go out often like other children when I was a kid and had only few friends. (Yes, my dolls are my only friend I got) For now, I guess I can still called myself played like a child because I love this hobbies and I love dolls:D
      My friends accept me just the way I am and they loving Ryo and others dolls ^^

    6. I did played with dolls when I was little, we had a box filled with naked and headless barbie dolls, My big brother and sister played with them as well.
      Most of the time we used them to play Dragon Ball Z and the Ninja turtles. xD

    7. Wow, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't surprised by how many people in this hobby used to not care for them when they were younger like I did. They never really appealed to me the way a lot of my brothers' toys did, though I did have some dolls. Never cared for barbies even though some family members insisted on buying them. Even now though I cringe at the thought of destroying and wasting what someone else has bought for me. I always felt too bad if I broke something if it was mine or not.

      To me and I'm sure to many others, ball jointed dolls just have their own appeal to them that sets them worlds apart from toys that I used to have when I was younger. Far more customizable and an amazing outlet for creativity. The realism to it is another huge factor for me. Perfect for giving my characters from past role plays (that have stuck with me for many years) a physical form that will help a great deal in further developing them.

    8. I loved to play with dolls when I was young and had a hard time giving them up when I got older. I loved barbies first (5-10) then when my parents stopped buying them and started throwing them out my grandmother (11-15) got me an american girl doll which I loved. But then I was "too old" for them as well. But I didn't get into BJDS for a while. I knew about them for about 5 years but never really got into them until recently when I was on deviantart and saw an BJD owners dolls and all the sudden fell in love with them I think I will be loving these dolls a lot longer though. :)

    9. I started collecting dolls about an hour after I was born, courtesy of my grandma. I had a core group of about four 16-18" dolls, a terrifying rag doll I made myself and, for some truly inexplicable reason, a toddler sized mannequin doll from a department store. I also loved my Star Wars action figures, who lived in an elaborate Victorian dollhouse after staging a coup and overthrowing the porcelain doll family who lived there.

      My daughter was just the opposite when she was little. One of her first words was "scary", which she's yell before throwing any doll you gave her across the room. At nine she saw her first Luts Kid and it was love at first sight. Now she has more BJDs than I do and won't go to sleep without her boy Ed. I have to say that the BJD hobby has been a wonderful way for us to connect and our dolly time is precious to me.

    10. I have always loved dolls. And I keep on loving them. They are so cute :)

    11. I had various hand me down Barbies and Sindys when I was a kid. I also had a Götz Sasha doll, which, if you've never seen them, are a bit similar to BJDs in the size and the fact that they're jointed. I still have my Sasha doll and I've always wished for some companions for her xD

    12. Well I had some Barbies when I was a kid. I loved to play with them and dress them. And I also liked the fact that they were different type of Barbies with different hair. :D
      I didn't have other dolls.

    13. Playing with dolls was one of my favorite childhood activities. I came from a family of seamstresses, and almost every doll or hand-made animal came with clothing, sometimes a lot of it, that was made from scraps of fabric. My mother and grandmother encouraged my doll play, and my mother especially tried to help by purchasing a pricey for the time Terry Lee doll because I wanted a doll that looked like me (brown hair and eyes).
      Barbies were never particularly interesting to me. They were just too...plastic...for lack of a better word. I didn't like the big boobs, and other than the clothes they didn't appeal to me.
      As an adult, I have picked up a doll here or there that appealed to me but didn't seriously collect until I found BJDs. Ah-ha, I thought. I can have all the dolls I want that look like me. Funny thing though - these girls have minds of their own and I had several before one of my girls agreed to look like me. Who knows? Maybe this next one will want to look like her mom.

    14. So. Did you play with dolls as a child?
      Yes, I think.. ^^;

      Why or why not?
      Well, sometimes I played with Barbie and some other dolls, because my mother and father, also my aunties and uncles gave me girly stuffs as birthday present ---> of course most people think, girls must get girly things.
      But I actually played with my brother's robots and cars, because I'm more into him and my male cousins.. ^^;;

      If yes, did your childhood love of dolls get you into BJDs or was it something else?
      Haha I don't know, but maybe yes and no.
      I always give name to everything I have, to all my Barbie dolls, my plushies, everything.
      And when once in a while I played with them, I will make their story and think about the continuation.
      And I think I'm like that too toward my BJDs..

      If no, how did your lack of childhood dolliness effect your BJD hobby (did it make you feel self-conscious/etc)?
      Though I seldom played with dolls, but it doesn't give me any effect toward my BJD hobby. ^^;

    15. I had barbie Dolls as a child and played a lot with them.

    16. I hated dolls!!! I remember being scared of my sister's american girls dolls, I felt like their eyes could see through me...ack!!! they gave me nightmares! lol and my mom bought me lots of barbies but I always cut their hair off and lost interest fast. I liked to play with my brothers and cars better...

      Nowadays is all the contrary! haha and I blame BJDs for it. I don't collect only BJDs but every kind of doll that calls my attention such as obitsu, Azone, living dead dolls and porcelain dolls. I also love plushies...my room looks like a kid's room in the eyes of outsiders because is full of dolls and plushies and I love it.

    17. Not really. I was more of a Hotwheels and Furby kid. I had a few Barbies, but I detested their sculpted-on underwear. I liked to make my own fun rather than play with toys for the most part.

    18. So. Did you play with dolls as a child?
      Not really, I played with a couple of barbies when my neighbour wanted but otherwise they were just stuffed away somewhere deep in my closet. As for bigger baby dolls, Ive never liked those D:

      Why or why not?
      Ive always had an eye for what looks good and what doesnt so Im guessing they werent enough "good-looking" for me, I saw the factory-made "face-up" and it just didnt look good. As for the bigger dolls, they were just creepy

      If yes, did your childhood love of dolls get you into BJDs or was it something else?
      -

      If no, how did your lack of childhood dolliness effect your BJD hobby (did it make you feel self-conscious/etc)?
      I had so much fun playing with lego and my stuffed animals, Ive never regretted not playing with barbies or baby dolls so I know for sure that getting a BJD was never to make up for lost times. In fact Im sure I would have played with a BJD if I got one at a young age.

      I dont think my lack of dolliness has had any effect on my BJD hobby, however I still find some dolls (and now also BJDs!) to be rather creepy :o

    19. As a child, I played with action figures - I know not everyone counts those as dolls, but I do.

      I still keep a small collection of them, and it was the action figure customization community that led me into the bjd world.

    20. I....played....with dolls as a kid o.o; "play" usually involved taking barbies heads off,cutting their hair,coloring their faces, ruining their clothes, and taking them into the pool. Have to say the worst I did was destory limited edition dolls...like the my fair lady barbie...did smarten up and protected the I dream of genie barbie when I was 14. Now I collect bjds and try not to mess them up...probably helps that their hair isnt permenant nor their eyes lol
