Did you play with dolls as a child?

Mar 3, 2012

    1. What a good question! Ironically, I never really played with dolls as a child. Instead, I play with My Little Pony. Had a giant collection of the ponies. Also played with other animal type toys, like horses and Littlest Pet Shop. Whenever my parents would get me a dollbaby, I thought they were cute, but didn't really want to play with them. Just liked animals better. I guess I enjoyed a lot of tom boy activities too, and getting dirty.

I remember one year my mother bought me a doll baby that looked real, and I definitely wanted to play with it just because of that reason. It intrigued me, like a work of art. The reaction is very similar to how I felt when I saw all the BJDs that looked realistic. Became infatuated with them and how real they looked! ;) So here I am! haha.

And my mother is finally happy that I am finally playing with dolls. :P

    2. Lol I use to play with my little ponys...again pool and some heads removed..but most were intact. T_T my grandma threw them all away by mistake

    3. hehehe. Oh, I know the feeling of them getting thrown away. My mom rounded up all of my little Ponies, put them in an industrial sized garbage bag and gave them to the neighbor kids. I am STILL heartbroken.

    4. I suppose I've always been a doll person. I played with Barbies and Takara Jennys as a young child, and I remember wanting an American Girl Doll that looked just like me in elementary school. I loved poring through the AG catalogs and looking at all the outfits and props they had for sale.

    5. Mine were already in a trash bag as storage after I got out of the pool o.o she just grabbed the wrong bag, I guilt trip her as a joke now, but when i was still a kid she felt so bad she bought me the thinner longer new MLP's that came out in like 2000, I destoryed them...they had crystals in their eyes.Your mom probably wouldnt fall for the guilt trip thing since she gave them away and wasnt by mistake x.x mine were collected in the 90's and one i got cause i went to school for slow kids they had a point system where you use your good points and can "buy" a toy...

..regret everything I did to my dolls and ponies now lol more so since some bjd's can wear barbie clothes and I had a large barbie suitcase full with props and other things, and gave it to my younger cousin. x.x so much stuff that would look good in photos, clothes were the only things that survived mostly.

    6. When I was really little I had a few baby dolls. My grandma and I played with them.
I know I can remember being 2 and playing with barbies with her on the dining room floor, lol.
But I loved toys in general, especially stuffed animal and dinosaurs. I still like collecting toys, my childhood self has never left me, lol.

I did collect porcelain dolls for a while there, which I loved a lot.
I can remember I was at a church raffle and they had them. There was one I wanted so bad and I won her. Then when I was 8 things started changing. That was the time when I got big into gaming and all the awesome tv shows that were out for kids. Stuff that was 'for boys' really but I got so into it. I had lots of action figures, pokemon stuff, transformers, my little pony, anime figures. I think I kept a good balance between girl and boy stuff.

But then I quit liking dolls so much because I got this giant doll for Christmas and she scared me so bad. I kept having nightmares that she was gonna come and kill me. I started developing this fear of dolls. I'm still freaked out when I see dolls at antique stores to the point where I have to leave. But there is something different about ABJDs. They make me feel calm, I'm not scared I'm more excited to see them. I guess it's because they're so pretty and can be whatever we want them to be. ^_^

    7. So. Did you play with dolls as a child?

      No, not really

      Why or why not?

When I was a kid, I had a baby doll and a barbie, that was it. My mum didn't really encourage me to play with either of them. I had an absolute mountain of plushies instead and my mum would let me have hundreds of those instead...and I admit, I still have a mountain of plushies, my husband's forever moving them off the bed lol.

If no, how did your lack of childhood dolliness effect your BJD hobby (did it make you feel self-conscious/etc)?

I don't think it made me feel self conscious at all, since I was collecting off-topic dolls before I got into BJDs. I think it kinda made me realise that when I was that age, I was a very hurt, very pressured-to-grow-up little girl and now that I have my own family and my own life away from those pressures...I can be who I am without fear of being treated badly for it.

My husband is completely accepting of my BJD and off-topic doll collection, he puts up with my plushies and the fact that I can't sleep without one, and he tolerates the fact that I spend crazy money on my dolls sometimes.

I think the best thing about my doll hobby is I realised just how wonderful the man I married is :)

    8. Iv always had and loved dolls and toys and plushies sadly i still buy plushies as well i have a fasination of living out my childhood again a bit X3! But yeah i always had the latest dolls from cabadge patch to glass dolls to plastic dolls to baby dolls to my sized dolls i loved thouse my sized baribies i remember carrying a look alike around with me was so fun for me xDDDD but yeah iv probleh owned uhhh 200 or so dolls before when i was a child @_@; i only have about 10 in my room and my first BJD coming on its way

    9. No, I didn't play with dolls. I was kind of a tomboy and I also did a lot of drawing as a child. I was too concerned with my other things to pay attention to dolls. If I did get a Barbie or similar doll, it ended up scalped, nekkid, and drawn on in a week then tossed. My mom learned quickly that dolls weren't my thing. She was happier giving me new sketch pads and pencils once a month.

With BJDs... I don't know how it's different. I just like them more than anything I can get in the States. And why did I go into BJDs, I have no clue. Just for the love of them!

    10. I had barbies when I was young, not an awful lot though since my parents didn't particularly approve of them.

    11. I played with all kinds of dolls as a child. I also made forts and had sword fights and played dress up and liked worms. :3 I was a pretty unique kid.... But yeah, I loved my dolls.

    12. I always played with barbies, cabbage patch dolls, quints and Polly pockets. There was always a fairly good stay of things I had. I wasn't smart enough to keep much of what I had as a child so a few years back I started hunting eBay and got some of my favorites from way back. It's nice to have them again!

    13. My mom kept buying them and accessories for me, I guess she was hoping to add a more feminine influence for my upbringing. I would always strip them bare, pop off the heads (Sometimes cut all of the hair off) then loose them. I did play a little with my little pony, but I was more interested in swimming and playing in the mud. TV too.

I've felt awkward with the BJD and everyone who knew me growing up has poked fun of me saying that I've finally gotten to the playing with dolls phase. It's somewhat annoying.

    14. I didn't play with barbies when I was little, it was all Pokemon,Digimon,Zoids, etc. I didn't really care much for dolls before I was introduced to BJD's.

    15. I, too, had a million horse toys when I was a kid. ;D I still have all my breyers and grand champions and such displayed in my room - even the one who can barely stand because one of his legs got broken off somehow!

    16. I would play with Barbies every once in a while with my sister. But I used to play with my stuffed animals a lot. I had so many on my bed, it wasn't even funny. I used to "teach" to them when I would bring my homework home from school.
My granny used to buy me porcelain glass dolls for Christmas. I never played with them. They used to creep me out. Then when she died, I kinda just put them on display and appreciated them more. I don't have them anymore because they must have gotten lost in the house fire we had when I was a senior in high school.
For the most part though, I played video games and played outside. I was such a tom boy. Used to climb trees, play football with my brother, skateboard. My favourite thing to do was when we used to play "final fantasy" outside. We would make up our own characters and story lines and make our own weapons from random sticks. That was the best.

    17. I played with dolls a lot as a child, but I wouldn't say I was uber girly. I also played with lots of other types of toys as well. My favorite colors were green and orange, and on the average school day dressed as a tom boy. But I did have a side that liked to dress in frills for special occasions. I guess I like bjds for their customization. They combined all my favorite hobbies- painting, sewing, photography, etc.

    18. I'd only play with barbies and brats things like that, i was scared of baby dolls and other dolls that seemed like they could audition for a role in a horror movie and get the part lol.

    19. I did. I had a huge collection of Barbies. I started collecting brats but then I fell out of love with fashion dolls. Now I adore BJDs

    20. I did! I had a WHOLE collection of Barbies and Bratz ! I lvoed them so much, then gave them to my little sister who DESTROYED them :(
