Did your "Grail doll" remain your grail doll?

Jun 23, 2015

    1. Ok - as an Arthurian nut ~er, SCHOLAR, that's what I mean~ grail/graal means something wonderful that seems unattainable. It remains a grail even if you get it because it is special and rare. I've a lot of dolls, and love all of them in some way or another - but I've only had 3 'grail' dolls.

First, an Idealian Hyperon - I started getting BJDs after he was released & sold out, so I never thought I'd get him.
Second, an SDGr Volks boy - at first it was Hijikata, then Ryoma appeared. I never thought I'd be able to AFFORD one of those boys, even if I managed to win a Volks lottery (the Ryoma) or find a Hijikata on the 2nd hand market.
Third, a Unoa Sist w/all the faceplates, etc (the winking one especially).

I've got the 1st two now (happy dance!!) and yes indeed, still special and wonderful! The third, well, those do come on the MP from time to time but I never seem to have the funds when they do - it's chasing my tail time now. I'll get her tho LOL

Now my favorite doll remains my IH Bichun - I've several IH dolls which I love - but they were not hard to get! I will say I'm more & more wanting an IH Leonard - he may become a 4th grail at this point. My question to myself - do I really NEED another EID? LOL LOL LOL

    2. My grail dolls would be Iplehouse YID Oscar in Peach-Gold skin with faceup #3 and a female Iplehouse to be his partner, though I can't decide which one. I will probably never be able to afford such expensive dolls, so they remain my dream/grail dolls.

    3. Nope. My first grail doll was an enchanted doll, but after looking at some comparison pictures and browsing her fan forum, I changed my mind. They are pretty dolls but they could pose better, the artist is especially difficult to deal with according to what I've read, and the wait is incredibly long. So I changed my grail to a Marmite Sue, which coincidentally opened orders around the same time, so I bought my grail just a few days after deciding it was a grail. Couldn't be happier :)

    4. If that were to happen, I'd be on board for one so fast! Even if I get an original, I'd probably still get a new Fairyland one.

    5. My 'grail' doll was a weird one because I never realized it before she got released. I had been fawing over the Minifee Moe bodies for a while because I love the way their feet are sculpted. I couldn't bring myself to like their actual size though, no matter how much I liked their aesthetics. It was dissapointing really because I worshipped the Minifee Miyu like a little resin goddess.

And then *BAM* Fairyland's Feeple 60 Moe girl bodies got released and there she was. FM60 Miyu was the one I had been waiting for all this time. Her serene look combined with that perfectly sculpted body made for the perfect doll in my opinion. I knew I couldn't go on without having her as a part of the 'family'. And that was that, she is currently living in her box because she's still naked but I want to make sure I purchase the perfect accessories for this girl.

I had another doll that was more like a 'crush' because she was so cute, small and portable. She's on her way home as we speak. A grail she has never been but I'm sure I'll absolutely adore her once she arrives.

    6. I have a couple of my grails (a Dollshe Saint head that will be going on a Doll Chateau A-03 body and Minifee Breakaway) and they're still very special in my collection. I also have a 2002 Volks girl who is one of my more treasured dolls but wasn't ever a grail.

    7. My grail doll is still my grail doll, even after I miraculously found her on DOA and bought her second hand. She is so amazing. (Marmite Sue's OOAK Carousel)

    8. Ditto what Galacticat said... my grail doll when I entered this hobby 10 years ago was Volks Lucas and I was finally able to get him last year. I still consider him my grail doll! I love him to pieces and he has a very special place in my collection. I hope very much that I'll be able to spoil this doll like crazy!

    9. Not really, I guess...:sweat Last year I hunted down all my long termed dream/grail dolls (Volks Okita, IOS Lacrimosa) and completed my collection but the feeling few days later after getting them were somehow changed. I didn't extremely adore about them like I'd thought, although I still like them and no plan to let them go. In the end, dolls which I like the most, are still my first and third doll which are very common, not limited and not expensive. But if I included a grail doll which I'd not planned to get at first but made me totally impressed when he arrived, it must be Soom R.Hyperon which I bought from here few months ago. I had a feeling that he will be like my first and third doll.

    10. my feeple60 celine head is will always be my grail doll all she is messing is a body which she will have very soon i loved her ever since the first time i saw her

    11. When I just discovered bjds, my grail doll at first was DoD T.Shall but then I realized how BIG she is and it turned me off. Then I kind of latched onto Dreaming Doll Airi, but a part of me still loves T.Shall and her almost dopey beauty.

    12. The grail dolls that I own (Volks Madoka, SwD Lucas, Williams and MS Laurie, if you're interested), are still my grails. I'm just so very lucky to own all of them! And Kanon Louis, whom I've wanted ever since I joined the hobby, but so far haven't been able to aquire, is still as high on his pedestal as ever ;). Unfortunately, in the ten years I have been in this hobby, I've only seen him resurface in the market place twice. And both time I was unable to afford him then. So, I guess you could call him my grail of grails. (although MS Laurie is also very rare; I was just fortunate enough to stumble upon her when I did)

    13. I currently have two grail dolls and im getting one soon! The other one I want however, is at a price of 500$ and seeing how I'm only thirteen, I think it will remain my grail until I can get a job to make the whole saving up money thing take less time. That doll was one of the first bjds I'd ever seen, at first I didn't like it but I kept being drawn back and now I can't wait to get a job! Hopefully I'll still be able to get her by then.

    14. Yup, my grail (Volks F-32) is still my grail even though I have her now. She's still quite rare and very special to me, so I don't think she'll ever stop being a grail!

    15. No, my tastes seem to constantly change. I actually bought my grail doll and didn't like her when i received her which was a complete shock after wanting one by this artist for so long. I traded her on, but it has actually been for the best as i now don't allow myself to have a 'grail' doll as such. If i see a doll i love now i keep it in mind allowing myself to keep my options open. I don't know whether i am just fickle but i find my collection constantly evolves and dolls i love now i wouldn't have given the time of day to when i started collecting two years ago.

    16. Yes the one I wanted so badly was a tan Mikhaila I was over the moon when I found one on here with the most beautiful face up and even more lucky when the seller let me have the very special wig too. She remains my Grail doll and is an absolute one off.

    17. I've had many grails over the years.

I left the hobby of doll collecting but still kept a few that I loved from my childhood.

Then I started collecting again with Tonner, whom I adore, and have so many wonderful celebrity dolls from him, as well as Evangeline/Parnilla from his WI Collection.

My friend tried to get me in to bjds, but the cost, etc, didn't appeal to me.

Until I had the chance to buy Evan The Tamer from Iplehouse second hand. I hesitated, and he was gone.....

Over the months, I checked and checked for him, and surprisingly, he became available again from the same seller.

Everything was perfect for the transaction - cash, price, and location - I could even drive to pick him up!

When I first got him, I held him with the wonder of a new born - I have never held a doll of such perfection before. I have purchased a few more since, but none have or will, replace him.

      He is perfect.

    18. I suppose you could say first grail was Ringdoll Carlos in the LE tan fullset version. I got him and still find him stunning but once I started putting my Loki together (DIM Tom Hiddleston/Feeple hybrid) he became my obsession. Not really sure you couldn't call them all grails as I really wanted each one so much at the time.

    19. Well my first "grail doll" was a Dollshe Bernard. I never seemed to be able to find him for sale when I had the money to buy him. This year I finally brought him home and I am seriously in love with him. I wouldn't say he is still my grail doll though.

I have also been stalking an Iplehouse Luo since I got into the hobby. As the new "difficult to obtain" doll he is my new grail. Now that I have my Bernard I am waiting for the perfect time to pounce on him. The problem is I really only want the head and no one seems to want to do splits (again when I have the money). Due to Souldoll deciding to do away with all of their Double line sculpts I will be bringing his partner home this year, perhaps I will be motivated to just go for it and order him as a full doll. I am sure someone around here could use the body. *Stares at growing number of floating heads*

I sort of see the grail doll as being the one that you really want but can't seem to get for some reason or another, it doesn't have to be expensive and it doesn't have to be limited but it is something that you must quest to find. So yeah my grail doll has changed, but only because I am now off on a different quest :).

    20. Well, I'll have to see. Currently, my grail doll is LLT's Ludwig. I'll need to see pics of him cast in resin - and with a face-up and wigs and also, see how he poses - to be able to tell whether he'll remain my grail doll. Still holding on to him for the time being but you never know ...
