DIM Tom Hiddleston Discussion Thread

Feb 15, 2013

    1. Haha you're right about the lips, or lack thereof...when I put my nekkid MNM next to my other heads, it's really not a flattering comparison lol (the lack of eyeballs doesn't win him any points, either). Artistry is a must!

All right, you know if you try making a Loki wig you must share your progress with us, whether there is epic success or epic fail! :D Have you tried making other wigs before? Some of these tutorials make it look so deceptively easy, just time consuming...but I'd bet the experience would be downright painful for perfectionists (and isn't that just the golden rule with most BJD tutorials lol).

    2. If you enjoy crafting, I can only recomend giving wigmaking a try. I loved creating mine. It should count as unfinished, because I had only a limited amount of hair, and stingy little person I am, I wanted to make more than one wig out of it...... all the experimentation factor aside.
Belive it or not, if they say you need an once, you'll probably need one, not half of it like I used.
Plastic fibers can be a bitch, stick everywhere, and not accept styling. Alpaca/Angora/other natural fibers are way better to handle, and easyer to style. To colour/style them just use normal hair products, it's save, easy and the cheapes way to go.
Hard cap wigs will be for one head only, but can be made into whatever style you want them in, be patiend, look the tutorial thread throu to the end, get a lot of inspiration and don't desperate with the hair/parting lines. Remember to cushion the inside with a soft material or hair, if not you could end up like me. (yes unfinished work you are to lazy to finish will get you in the end)

The two wigs are made with this tutorial, the small one with the cut offs of the larger one.
Definitively not the best way to go (not enough/long enough hair), but it was fun (way better than with sythetic hair) and a great learning expirance.
As soon as I get a good provider (without horrendous shipping cost) I'll be slowly replacing all my dolls wigs.

Ventilating a wig is a whole other story, way more complicated, time consuming and, at least for me, frustrating. If you want to go into that, look it up on youtube, you'll find a lot of interesting tutorials and useful info.
(I've only used this on my cosplay wigs, in a more "highlight" fashion, not the original technik)

    3. Yeah, I've ordered a Taylor, I have high hopes for the hairline at least, though I love the curls of his current wig. I really think think a version of his actual hair must be a custom job, though he might look interesting with a big 'fro XD

Lucius, I do like how your wig falls, it's very nice hair.

Ah, I'm very happy with the DiM mold! It is a good likeness but the most doll-like, which I prefer. The Whispering Grass Thomas is a really good likeness, and the Modoll even more so, but the first is more like a figurine (comparable to the Hot Toys Loki) and the last almost like a sculpture. Does that make sense to anybody else?

I like for my dolls to have an actual toy-doll-like quality, which is also why I think hard cap hair looks great but it makes it harder to play with the doll. Even though I don't exactly braid Lox' hair or whatever, it still needs to be POSSIBLE for me to click ;p My Popovy doll has a hard cap wig from Kagami and you can't just sit down and brush it for the fun of it.

Does anyone what this sculpt is? <-- She made it herself. I'm in such awe.

    4. That is the TrinitroTrololo Loki head.
She has more than one head she has made, and a lot of lovely stories.
The Loki head is in the casting proces, we, as all the lovely people who want one, are waiting since years beginning for any infos/new. The last she said was in spring, not specified wich spring..... but I can only work with google translator, since she is russian.

Here some nice links to her other pages:
      http://tntrololo.diary.ru/
      http://trinitrotrololo.tumblr.com/

I love her works, they rage from very funny but greatly elaborated to dark and creepy. Most of them have a nice twist at the end. ^^

And her Loki head will be my Lokis second head for his Mythology self, while Hiddles is staying the Avengers/Thor version.

      *LOOOOOOOOOve* Don't mind me fangirling.

    5. Lucius, that wig is lovely for your boy! That's not the one that's been scratching up his faceup though, is it? Either way, it's a wig that can be dressed up or down with some artful styling or tousling, very nice. :D I think I've hoarded enough black Tibetan lambskin wigs from my awesome wig lady (who I completely recommend!) for Loki's, uh, "sexy" post-tantrum prison weave style (which is one of my favorites for reasons :D) but I might experiment with this wig method for Thor, actually! That wavy, ultra silky looking angora like in the tutorial would be really pretty in a blond/brown mix...although I'm not sure how well braiding the sides and hiding that many more sections of dried crusty glue would work for an amateur like myself lol. :D It might be worth it to purposely buy some really cheap, nasty hair to practice with, because nothing makes me more angry than screwing up and wasting a perfectly good product because I did something wrong!

Ventilating might be the way to go if someone wanted to make a nice little custom Thor beard, too...talk about an exercise in patience lol. ;) Every time I mess with cutting a wig, I resent that I didn't use my elective credits to take a crash course in cosmetology when I was in school...little did I know how useful those hairstyling skills would be for the resin army. :P

Also wow, I didn't know you had a TrinitroTrololo head on the way! You must do some comparison pictures with both your boys when that head shows up! :D It sounds as if you adore that noggin the way I love my WG Thomases, so fangirl your heart out! <33 Definitely looks as if he's plotting something with that knowing smirk, the naughty thing... :D That artist does some really cool detailed photostories with their dolls, I really love their little dioramas (I covet Loki's room of booze and fanart). ;) Did Google Translator show any mention of where the artist is having her heads cast that it's taking so long? I'm always curious about which casting services are efficient and speedy, and which ones take forever...

Stella, I know you will be delighted with your Taylor, and so will Lox! These spoiled boys need at least as many hair options as they do outfits, right? ;) I'm with you on the hair, I want to be able to brush and style it, and I would also be forever paranoid of damaging a glued wig even with the gentlest styling. Monique wigs can really take a beating, which is a necessary thing for a God who gets his ass kicked often... :D

I must disagree on the WG Thomas head, though - as much as I love my little Hot Toys Loki, Iryna's dolls are hand-sculpted and exquisite; I've never seen such beautifully realistic details on a character sculpt, and her faceups make them even better. The eyebrows she paints are freaking incredible omg. *_* (Now that she's offering faceup commissions as well, it's a daily struggle not to be greedy and sign up repeatedly!) She makes all of the wigs, themed cosplay clothes, and even the eyes for her dolls and makes tutorials on a lot of it. :D Her sweet tiny animal dolls are super adorable, and the Chris head she has in the works pleases my Loki squad greatly, since they've been wishing for someone to torment lol :D poor Thor has no idea what he's in for... :))

But as for the WG Thomas/Loki sculpt itself, I've looked at a lot of them, and I've yet to see a poorly done one, which speaks volumes about the sculpt itself shining through with any faceups, haha - and that gives me hope, since I have a blank one to tangle with as well as my painted beauties on the way! :D Aren't they lovely? (Photo credit to WG, of course.) But this sculpt holds a special place in my heart, as it was the doll that made me realize Loki BJDs even existed and tied together my two favorite things. <333 He also seems a little more petite and refined than the other heads, and also has the most human head shape - the MNM kind of fails hard with that, the little conehead. I never noticed it until now, when I brought out all of the heads and lined them up together to play with wig size testing. :P MNM Hiddles' head cap is also really loose and wobbly, but that's not a big deal since they're all going to be wearing wigs to keep rogue headcaps in their place. Bonus for me is that the WG head looks great on my 65cm body, which worked out perfectly! :D

However! If anyone is trying to use a really really big/tall/beefy doll body, the MoDoll head is definitely large enough to support that look. As you'll see below, he's kind of a big deal enormous. Mine will probably remain a floating head for all time, because he looks a little silly on all the bodies I own lol. :/ Their faceups are pretty awesome though (the speckled skin texture on there from the airbrushing(?) is interesting - he even appears to have some stubble/5 o'clock shadow action going on, haha - and this makes even WS heads look passably NS from the front! Multipurpose for bodies of various colors. :D Also, fluffy little Tom eyebrows lol). BUT their promo previews on Etsy definitely have some hardcore Photoshopping going on, in case that wasn't obvious from the hair. :P He also has little Dumbo ears which is cute but annoying when you're trying to lay the head at a certain angle for pictures lol. >_>

I can't wait until everyone is here so I can line up every Loki head in a row of adorableness, ehehe! Soon! (I already have a definite favorite, and unfortunately the blank MNM is not it lol. Maybe he'll be back in the running once he gets a faceup someday.) :D At some point I'd love to do a more in-depth compare/contrast session with all the Lokis, but for now, here's a few examples of the trio of Hiddles heads who are already home (and please ignore the dratted datestamps and/or babbus in the frame lol :D ugh my camera sucks so bad, I'm sorry).

      For science!

      - From the front!
      - "Get me from my good side---" (Lokis do Abbey Road...this might look more legit once the trio becomes a foursome.)
      - "No, my other good side, you foolish mortal!" (That's about enough of your sassy mouth, or I will put you back in the box.) >:o
      - When Loki finally gets you to kneel, the view might look a little like this lol...
      - So does this count as an upskirt shot for a head...? >_>
      - Bonus: babbus respect nothing. Absolutely nothing. :D

So...that got really long really quickly! I apologize for the impromptu essay here, when I get excited I talk a lot. :D As always, I am up for taking pictures (within my lame camera's limitations, that is) of anything specific if someone needs to see details to make advised purchasing decisions, comparisons, just for admiring, etc. :D

    6. Psychobarfly-- oh yes, that is the evil little stcarchy wig. It's half finised, like I said, and with to little hair, really. But I love the look, that's why it stays for now.
A clarification: No Trinitrotrololo Head on the way for me, because it's not for sale yet. She was not sure where to cast it, that's why it's taking so long, probably. But, as soon as it is on the market, I'll get one, I swear. I've had the funds for it since March, waiting for that head.
      *yayyyyy fangirling dream*
      I want that Loki head!!!!!!!!!

Love your Pics^^. Yay for sciense!!!!!!!

    7. LOL thank you, these little heads just love having decapitated runway sessions for science! (And by love, I mean they're all plotting my imminent death, but you know...semantics.) :D WG's beautiful pictures are probably the best ones Thomas and Natalie will ever enjoy because my camera is so terrible, so I hope he got his fill lol. Maybe the resins need a new camera for Christmas!

Aww! I thought your wig looked really good and the waves fell beautifully, and Loki's hair isn't too crazily thick anyway lol. ;) As long as there's no obvious bald spots, you're fine! Putting something over the scratchy parts on the inside might still be a good plan, though...

Oops, sorry! I must have read that wrong. That's too bad she's having a difficult time pinning down a casting service! :/ It seems like there aren't a lot of options to choose from, and they usually make artists buy their work in bulk or they won't bother doing it (or it will get crazy expensive). The more heads they order at once the cheaper each one becomes, but it can still be a huge upfront expense for the artist. I think a lot of the more recent MNM orders were courting NobilityDoll(?) since DiM gave up on offering this, so she could try that? DollShe also offers casting services for artists, that's where my lovely WG heads were born! ;) Just keep watching and waiting, and you can be first in line once your artist is ready! :D :D

    8. I love the fangirling, and I love hearing all this information!

Psychobarfly, I did not compare the WG Thomas head with Hot Toys Loki because of the quality, it is obvious to even to me as a relative noob that it is extremely well made, but in how it felt to me along the spectrum of doll-like to realistic. So, less doll-like than the DiM head but still stylized, does that make any sense?

The Modoll head really is HUGE, you could put that on a 80 cm body! Do you have a body for it, or is there a body out there that you want for it? I LOVE your scientific approach, all the pictures are really informative and just plain fun to look at.

Lucius, keeping my fingers crossed that she finds a caster soon! Dollshe is a very respected company, right? And I agree that thinner hair works very well for Loki (poor Hiddles, he is going bald very quickly) and is actually often much nicer looking than the absurdly full wigs anyway.

I get the impression that a lot of really nice work is being done in Eastern Europe, and the community is slowly getting aware of it? Or has it been clear for years and I'm the one catching up? I started to see more from the region since Tumblr really took off, but only really got it earlier this year when I got my Popovy doll.

    9. Yay for fangirling! :D :D I'm so glad we have our own little corner of the Hiddles dolly fandom here. I bet Marvel is just delighted with themselves for showing us the Loki clones, because that has given us fangirls endless cause to hunt ALL the Loki dolls. :>

Ahh, all right, I feel as if I was misreading quite a lot in everyone's last few comments...clearly I need to pay better attention lol! What you said makes sense, thanks for clarifying! <3 So on a scale of doll-like to realistic, the MNM is closer to "dolly," and both WG and MoDoll's heads are much more humanoid and realistic? That I do agree with! My apologies again. ;) The more neutral features of the Tom MNM also leaves a lot of room for interpretation between painting and modding! I'm always so impressed to see the different versions of the same heads, subtle changes can make such a huge difference. :D I would love to compare a blank MoDoll head to the faceupped one, too. (I think Loki needs to cough up some cash out of Asgard's endless supply of gold...) >_>

I bet you could manage an 80cm body easily! There are surprisingly few examples of that head "in the wild," (a couple more on here though) but I've seen the head on an 80cm IOS body, and I believe my head's previous owner was using the 73cm Island Doll body and playing some head-swapping games between the MoDoll and the rightful owner, Island Doll Loki. ;) Here's another one on a mystery body I don't recognize. :D The largest bodies I own are a couple 65cm Super Gems, and that seems big enough to me already lol. There are many bodies I would love to test-drive the MoDoll head on, but since there's still no Walmart of dolls in existence I shall proceed with caution. But since I'm used to little bobbleheaded MNFs and Latis, it takes a pretty severe mismatch look to make me say no! :D

    10. There are certainly a lot of different Tom sculpts out there. I had no idea about some of them. There's also the Natrume one, but I feel that one really doesn't look much like Tom and a lot more like Adrian Brody. I myself prefer the DIM one best because it is the most doll stylized of the bunch. Not really a fan of the more realistic sculpts with the smaller eyes.

In happier news, little Thor has FINALLY shipped and I should be getting him this week. Little Loki is going to be most pleased that his better half will be with him finally. To quote Loki himself, "For what is Loki, without Thor?" This means I can no longer procrastinate on getting them proper costumes to wear, of course. At least I figured out how I want to approximate Lati Yellow sized chainmail already.

I was messing around with the dolls today and trying to take group shots. It always amuses me how much the twins, totally not related, end up looking like they belong to him.

    11. There are many, and it is WONDERFUL. :D Hiddles!variety is the spice of life! I know that if all of my heads were actually painted instead of being blank little black holes of naked-faced guilt I would have a dickens of a time playing favorites, too. ;)

The MoDoll and Natrume heads are one and the same, so Natrume is either (one of) the artist(s) at MoDoll, or operates as their agent of sorts? But I think Natrume = Mona Jenny, aka MoDoll...mysterious! The back of his headcap is stamped with the MoDoll logo, so once I saw that a few puzzle pieces shifted into place.

Are you suuuuuure those cute twins aren't Loki's? Never put anything past that boy! ;) Yay for Lati getting their act together at long last, your little one needs his Thor to torment! :D I feel bad for my blue babbu...it switches fluidly between being baby Loki and Loki's baby, so the thing probably has a complex lol. Do yours get the multiple personality treatment on occasion? I bet your itty bitty chainmail will be kickass! (Just don't let the sharp metal bits get the better of you, because battling tetanus is no way to guarantee a completed tiny doll outfit within royalty's desired timeframe...) :>

    12. It's really interesting seeing all the different tom sculpts. I know i'm biased but I love the DIM one best but they are all stunning. Some of the ones of Tom's other characters are amazing too. I particularly love this one: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/s...-IV-(mnm-Tom-Hiddleston)&highlight=hiddleston its such an amazing shoot too.
Kim so glad little Loki is getting his Thor at last. Are you really sure those twins aren't Loki's? After all with Loki you just never know:) I have suspicions about one of my little guys Jasper who is always hanging on to Loki or Thor. He is actually a Naga but I suppose with Loki that's entirely possible too!
Excuse the poor quality pic it was indoors at a meetup.

    13. Awww Picus Picus!!!!!!!
Love you for your pictures (not only for them, of course :P)!!!!!!
Kim- Your twins are adorable, and yes, the could very well be related to your Creepy Tom, with thouse beautyful green eyes, and the combination of bold and black wigs. (Who did he meet that night....?)The scowl on the black haird one is just an added character bonus^^

Kavarr- thank you for that link, one of the wonderful gallerys I missed somehow.... How could I??????
I love your naga. Soooooooooo cute, with that adorable cuddle-me face. And the perfect ble colour for an Ice-Naga, if something like that even makes sense. The little one looks lovely with Thor and Loki. I know it was most probably for stabilities sake, but that tail coiled around Thors arm is just to cute. It gives you a lot to play with^^

And yes, Hiddles variaty is love! I don't know much about MNM in general (only interested in this one) but I think Hiddles is one of the most popular/most varied options out there, with at least three different heads directly based on him and some more with him as slight inspirational reference. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think many of the Hollywood cuties get this much attention in our hobby.

    14. Wow, those twins! Are you really sure they're not related? ;) And the little Naga is very Jotun-like! Pretty!

The Taylor wig arrived, I put it on Lox and it looked full of potential, but then it struck me it will probably be perfect for the doll I still have on the way so I took it off him again. Sorry Lox. I bet it will still be pretty curly on him if you keep it long-ish, and you could always curl it some extra. I'm not sure the flip would work, the hair is fairly heavy.

    15. Ohh I didn't realize Natrume and MoDoll were the same. I also had no idea that the Natrume heads were so big! The variety of heads definitely means there should be a Tom for everyone's tastes, which is great.

The twins are original characters who were created years and years before I got into Marvel, so their resemblance to Loki has more to do with my love of green eyed characters who all tend to be mischievous assholes than actual parentage. I have yet to meet a green eyed snarky asshole I didn't like lol

I am super excited for little Thor. Little Loki will be most happy to have his Thor in the house. His costume should be fun to put together. One thing about the little guys, hand sewing is sooooooo much easier for them when they're like 4" tall and not 24"

psychobarfly - little Loki is Loki always, he just gets to be the AU little Loki who is blue all of the time and who gets to have little Thor as his husband. Creepy Tom is the one I waffle on more, since he looks amazing as Loki and a big Loki is so much fun, but I love calling him Creepy Tom and would love to recreate some Tom shoots with him as well.

Kavarr - oh nooooo a little naga! I love those dolls so much and am always tempted by them

    16. It would be fun to do some of his other characters. I would be tempted to do Adam from OLLA. He can always borrow my other boys guitars etc... I also love him in The Hollow Crown. How can anyone look so hot covered in blood and dirt???
Kim those Naga tails are what got me in. When they released the colored ones I could resist no longer. I have two and when in the cabinet I wrap their tails around Loki and Thor's legs who have the job of protecting them. Naga are not very stable on their own!
Lucius I figure since one of Loki's children was a snake well a Naga is not entirely out of the question;)

    17. All the versions of Tom are so wonderful! Both as minimees and as 'real' characters!
I guess that's showing Tom's versatility as a character actor. And it does carry over in his minimees; they are all different even when they are the same sculpt!

Has anybody found a short enough wig to use for his own short&curly hair style? Good short wigs are so hard to find!

    18. Damn it! I have gone and bought a third DIM head for my boy so he can do some of the other characters as well as the more traditional looking Loki. I now have a doll with three heads, three arms and one body! I am seriously considering selling a few of my others as Loki/Hiddles takes up most of my time and most of my money. It's so good to have our little group who can understand our crazy obsession:) Now my main fear is that he will try and talk me into getting him a Tony Stark to torment as well!

    19. Kavarr- I understand perfectly the thought of wanting more of Toms characters in doll version, and having more than one head for a doll^^
Still, even if Loki screams the loudest, the rest of your crew should warrent a lage amount of consideration. Don't do anything you'd regret later. And don't let Loki dictate your life!!!!!! *sight- easyer said than done...... (I've been creating human sized "not-so-glowing-sticks-of-doom or, translated: Loki cosplay walking staff and smal speer, both without electronics,+ daggers (avengers vers and TDWvers). Yeah, I'm one to talk, right)*

Oh well, my sister is very imune to Lokis rantings and she is playing concience whenever I come up with another crazy idea. I'm so lucky to have her. But since my Loki browsed this thread with me and saw that cute nendroid he's been bugging me to get him a sweet little Tony. I have my suspicions, I bet he is going to cuddle him to death every time no one is looking. I've been trying to find a suitable replacement for the nendroid, a cellphone charm, a keychain, an action figuer..... can you imagen there is only an abundance of spiderman merchan in spain atm. Perhaps with christmas this near, they will stock up their product variaty. I`ll have to go hunt again.

On another notice, Loki found a new ally. I'm still debatating if I should or should not be afraid for the well being of the northan galaxy....
      (Pic in my next post^^)

    20. Hahaha I'm so glad i'm not the only one being tormented by a spoilt, greedy brat of a frost giant! I haven't made any drastic decisions about culling any of my crew yet. There are some I would never give up even for Hiddles himself (can't believe i'm saying that!). No I will be strong and not listen to those ideas of what that money could be spent on (read Loki) and have a serious think first. It's just when I pick him up and look at him I think I really could be happy with not so many and just concentrate on my favorites. I'm sure he puts those ideas in my head!
I would love to see your creations Lucius. Are you going to cosplay Loki yourself? I have seen some amazing cosplayers with incredible outfits. If you do you will have to show us a pic of you and your minimee together:)
You know I think it may be inevitable that we get some kind of Tony for our Loki's even if it is a keyring and I agree he would cuddle it when no one is around too:)
Post that pic soon I need to see his ally!
