Disney Japan creates one off Super Dollfie models

Oct 22, 2013

    1. I can answer your question about the popularity, Shawnee. I have been to Tokyo Disneyland several times, and the thing that is the most different there is the princesses are not popular. At all. There is no princess parade, and no Princess gift shop. By far, the most popular characters are Duffy and Marie (white cat from aristocats). Rapunzel is beautiful, but NOT kawaii. I think if they had done a lieselotte as Marie the bidding would have gone through the roof.

    2. Oh, that is very interesting. Thank you so much for telling me. I had no idea the princesses aren't popular over there. (Seems like everybody loves them in the US.) When you say Duffy, do you mean the bear? I collect Duffy bears :P And funny enough, Marie is (one) of my favorite characters in all of Disney. I collect WDCC's and other figures of her. Haha. (Along with Lucifer the cat. I just love the Disney animals...)

I have to agree with you. I'm honestly surprised then why they chose to go with Rapunzel. I wonder what their reasoning was.. But another question, why is Jack as popular as he is? Is it because it is near Halloween? Or perhaps, there isn't much done with him, so they figure he would be super rare?

    3. I honestly have no idea why Jack's price is so crazy. Anyone else have a guess? I don't remember him being very huge there, but I could be wrong. He really is a stunning doll, but I find Rapunzel more appealing.
On a side note, Duffy (and his girlfriend, Shellie Mae) are CRAZY popular there. There is even a dinner show about Mickey and how he met Duffy. If they did a doll couple dressed as Duffy and Shellie Mae, I'm certain the bidding would be insane for them also.
You would love Tokyo Sea and Tokyo Disney, Shawnee. Everything is character based - the main float on the parade has Mickey and Minnie, Duffy, Marie, and Chip and Dale. Complete opposite of what is popular here.

    4. I agree, both of them are really amazing. But I also like Rapunzel better. The detail on her wig and clothes is just incredible!

Wow, that all sounds so awesome. And it really is much different from here. Honestly, that all sounds more like what Disney used to be. (And perhaps what I wish it still is, here..) One day, I will visit Japan, and you can bet I'll be going to Disney there :)

    5. Here are my thoughts,

Tangled is a relatively new Disney movie (2010) while the Nightmare Before Christmas is from 1993.
From that alone it would make sense that TNBC is more well known.

The people who grew up watching the TNBC are older and can therefore have the means to make the purchase/bid.

Jack is instantly recognizable while Rapunzel can get lost among other equally pretty dolls. He's the pumpkin king for crying out loud!

And of course there's a huge Tim Burton fan base, that aside, I'm pretty sure this specific film also has a very large fan base.

It's also nice to see a male collaboration model, most up until now have been female.

    6. Jack and TNBC (Particularly Jack) is INSANELY popular in Japan, maybe not in Tokyo Disney but he's a huge pop culture collectible and is everywhere in Tokyo itself at least.

    7. Thank you Eleniel! That is great to know!

    8. I'd like to see more gjinkas! A Marie would be cute, as someone already mentioned. A SD16 as Duchess and a MSD as Marie would be amazing. Maybe Lady and Tramp?

Maleficent would be amazing but unlikely...

    9. The prices sure don't surprise me, but I am sad that this may be the only collaboration we will see between them. I have hoped that Volks would do a collaboration with Disney as there are many ideas I think would work great in BJD form.

    10. They both look wonderful, & I'm not going to even look at their prices !! :sweat

I would love to see Cinderella, Belle, & Alice :)

    11. They did it with Baby the Stars Shine Bright and Disney before.

If we make a petition to make more Disney dolls, maybe Volks might listen!

    12. YES. Jack Skellington is INSANELY popular in Japan. Any Disney store you go in Japan, expect a Jack Skellington themed item, along with Minnie Mouse, Marie, Winnie the Pooh, Mickey Mouse, and the other characters which are considered kawaii to the Japanese people. Same in the Disney resort.

    13. That Jack Skellington... :drool If I had $20k+ lying around I would so go for him. He's gorgeous. Rapunzel is also super-pretty, I really love the detail on her outfit. Maybe Volks'll do a full release of these guys (not as detailed or as Special, but still)? An official Sally BJD would also be really amazing!

Aoibara, Winnie the Pooh and Jack Skellington are big in Japan?? That is so cool! They're my two favorite Disney-owned characters! :D

    14. Meeeh, Jack looks cute, but I prefer the skeleton head over the normal male doll head. I just don't see Jack as a cute, pretty guy like that. I think a human Jack would look a little more...spooky!

Rapunzel is really gorgeous, though. I love all the detail on her dress and in her wig. I'd buy up that doll in a heartbeat!

    15. Yes they are. If you have a chance to visit Japan, be sure to stop by Tokyo Disneyland! You will find a good amount of Winnie the Pooh stuff there! Oh, it will be even better on Christmas, because every year, Tokyo Disneyland seems to have Haunted House decorated in the Nightmare before Christmas style.

    16. How wonderful thanks for sharing!

    17. The Jack doll is absolutely perfect! I really like how they incorporated his design into clothing (especially with the gloves and the mask). The Rapunzel is really cute, too. Thanks for sharing! :D

    18. I soooooo want Jack!!! I love Nightmare Before Christmas and someday in all my spare time I would like to make a Jack and sally mod.

    19. Rapunzel is beautiful! Her dress and hair are so accurate! Fascinating about the Disney princesses in Japan, thanks for sharing :)

    20. The auction ended~.

Apparently Rapunzel ended with 703,800 Yen (Approx. 7038 USD), while Jack Skellington landed at a whopping 2,100,000 Yen (Approx. 21000 USD).
