dissapointment in volks?

Mar 13, 2011

    1. I don't know if anyone else has pointed this out to you, but I had a peek at your welcoming thread for your new Lucas (congrats by the way!), and it looks like he's a very old Lucas, the very first release, in fact, rather than Black Cat Lucas, the only pureskin Lucas, as your signature indicates. :) Volks oldskin is not as translucent as the newer pureskin resin. Also, the old SD13 boy body, with the old knee design, definitely does not sit or stand as well as the redesigned body. This body was discontinued over 5 years ago when Volks changed their design to include locking knees and thigh pieces to allow for greater stability in posing. Wiring and sueding, like we used to do in the old days, is the best way to work with your older doll. Best of luck!

    2. Hybridizing is indeed a great way to get your perfect doll, it just takes some time and research (and money of course).

orphansparrow:If your Lucas has indeed the older body (the one with funny looking knees), I can imagine standing is difficult. My SwD Lucas has that body and although he stands fine when he's strung correctly, he is kicky and tends to buckle. Still, if I'm patient and take time to balance him, I can use his kickyness to make him stand on one leg with the other bend. Makes up for great pictures.

This body DOES have the hip locks, though. If you want your doll to sit up straight, make sure you push the torso down more than 90 degrees, 'cause that should put the locking system in place.

    3. My most recent FCS doll came with a couple of tiny dark spots(?) on its face which couldn't be removed, although I ordered it without faceup. :sweat It's a tanned-skin though.
This kinda disappointed me since the state of my previous FCS doll had been absolutely perfect.. :|

    4. The complete opposite is true. So far, I have only been amazed by what I have received rather than disappointed. The only time I was so-called disappointed was last week when I took out my spare SD13 body and realized that it is not as poseable as I thought it will be. But then again, I have only owned SD17 bodies up to that point. Comparing the SD13 and SD17 bodies is definitely not a fair deal.

    5. I seem to enjoy Volks, so I can`t say too much about their Resin.

As for resin, I think it does end up on the person. I`ve tried Dolkot, Popodoll, Soom, Luts, Spiritdoll... and ended up with Volks having my favorite Resin.

I do have the robo-legs of doom on a Sasha, so I must admit I`m not that fond of their engineering regarding posability in their older types. As for the newer bodies, I do enjoy the sturdiness they have in their SD size, not SD13. I think the larger the doll, less sturdy they become, though my Pearl seems to object cause she can actually stand stiff with those heels of hers.

As for a dislike on Volks, I hate their FCS system, cause each one I ordered after my F-16 came with some flaw.
My MSD`s have all had weird eyelashes. One was warped, the other two with non-fully glued eyelashes on one side.
My F-31 came with a earhole that couldn`t put an ear on. Thank god I actually was in Kyoto at that time and had them fix this problem while I was there.
Not to mention LE kids NEVER seem to be sprayed so their faceup chips off unless you do it yourself...

That`s what I have about Volks. No disappointment in Resin, but their faceup quality control.

    6. I'm completely happy with my Volks dolls. While they have limitations, they are not limitations that bother me.

Not everyone has to like Volks -- if you don't, rock on, more for me. XD

    7. Although my Volks dolls may not have the best range of motion, the beauty of the body sculpt more than makes up for it. They are also so sturdy! I never have to worry about them taking a fall as they stand like rocks, and I love the weight and feel of Volks' resin. So no, never been dissapointed with Volks at all. I've also had nothing but good experiences with their customer service.

    8. I don't have a huge amount of experience with Volks, I used to see a member of DOA occassionally at meets and she had YOSD's by Volks and they all seem utterly lovely. I personally have a Volks Suiseiseski and to be honest she is one of my best posers and I absolutely adore her; she is definately my favourite girl. I found the resin to be really lovely, I love her chubbiness and generally am very happy. I would love to have the ability to add more Volks' to my collection but they're quite difficult to obtain here in the UK unless I go on the second hand market/Yahoo Japan/attempt somehow to get one through an international Dolpa

    9. I've never felt, or seen a volks doll in person. And I've never wanted to. So in a way I was disappointed in them, as a company itself. I had heard all these things about volks and then saw the dolls...and wasn't impressed. They just aren't my aesthetic cup of tea. I think the bodys are stout, childish, and stocky. I do have two female off topic 1/6th dollfies and their elbows are terrible!! Obitsu is so much better. By miles.

I like the dollzones they are very nice, but the way the double joints are and stick out here and there, I do not like. I love the face sculpts though! I plan to get an Annie eventually (I already have a Megi and co-own a Hid :3) What I really enjoy in a doll's body are the lovely fairyland/cp sculpts. I absolutely LOVE the way the elbows, knees, and wrists are made and designed. It flows so well and aren't blocky at all. I love the little caps over the knees/elbows! <3 Not a fan of the faces though. haha What can I say, we doll lovers are hard to please~

    10. thanks everyone, but just to clarify - i too love volks dolls! i was never saying that i didn't. i just wondered if anyone had felt any disappointment with certain aspects of them. there is one other volks doll i still want to get, and i love the ones i have. it seems people may think i'm bashing them - but i'm not i swear! i've just had some trouble with certain aspects of these dolls. volks are beautiful though!

    11. This. ^_^

I'm most familiar with Volks' larger dolls (I have several SD13 guys and one mature-body SD13 girl here-), and haven't had a problem with any of them. They're not stellar posers, as others have already mentioned, but they're very solidly made and reasonably well-engineered for the type of dolls they are (That would be "Dolls with "old-school" single-jointed bodies". XD).

I also haven't noticed any odd textures or differences between my dolls' various resin batches... But they're all pure skin, and that may have something to do with it. I don't have an old skin doll to compare them to. I will say this, though. Volks' current resin is the heaviest, most sturdy stuff I've come across, and I've owned dolls from a lot of different companies. There are other nice resins out there, but Volks is among the best.

    12. I'm with this. The hands are just... ick.

I was a TINY bit disappointed with my Volks resin girl when she arrived purely because sooooooo many people harp on about the amazing resin quality and how wonderfully they pose etc but I find her very limited and she's also got this horrible bobblehead thing going on but I don't know if that's a problem with her neck or her stringing. The resin quality is also nowhere near as good as my Angell Studio dolls, and certainly not the best of the best as I've been led to believe =/ (Though it is wonderfully thick and strong so that makes up for it!)

But saying all that, I'm actually just picking on minute flaws since that's the question - I love my Mika regardless and she's still one of my favourite dolls :aheartbea Yes there were things that were disappointing about her, but that was more due to my expectations than anything.

    13. interesting. you are the 2nd person in this thread to mention how awesome angell studio's resin is. i've never felt it myself, but it must be good huh? :)

    14. Interesting... and a perfect illustration of how people's observations can be completely subjective.

I (very) briefly owned an Angell Studio Gabriel and her resin was light, slick, thin in places and very much what I would describe as "plasticy". The only resin I've handled personally that I was less impressed with was an old Wishel. My Gabriel was also the pinkest doll I've ever seen... Pinker even than Chiba's former "Pinkest thing to ever pink its way out of Pinkytown" DOD girl... Plus, she arrived with two broken fingers, which AS never bothered to do anything about. They pretty much ignored me when I asked them about replacement parts. I wasn't very impressed by that, either.

    15. I didn't experience pinkness, but the one Angell Studio doll I ever handled was an MSD that weighed less than my YoSD and whose resin had a weird, waxy plastic look and feel to it. Also really, really shiny to the point of it being offputting. I wonder if they have changed resin recently?

The only resin I've ever handled that was nicer than Volks was really old from the height of their production Customhouse. It felt and looked like gorgeous porcelain. Old Souldoll also was interesting because it had an interesting tooth to it that wasn't unattractive.

    16. ITotal example of personal preference) I am with Brightfires I had bought AS in the past. I could not keep him for all of the reasons under the sun, the resin was slick and soft- I tried to sand something and off it went. I bought it because it was 1/2 the cost as my DOD, it was as more pink than my DOD brand new and as soon as I got him I realize why the price could be much cheaper, the doll was whole lot lighter in weight. It was also thinner, all of the outfits from DOD and Volks were too big on him. But the outfit made by AS was very tight on their own doll. I had to pull and pull to get the skinny pants on... but once they were on, he could not sit because the pants were too tight. The pant buttons would pop open and entire butt would be hanging out at the back LOL

I took pictures and wrote to AS, they told me that the outfit was designed for standing pose only..... he was not meant to be sitting with them on

      so I sold them both

    17. Old Customhouse resin really was nice... A friend of mine has several of their older dolls and you're right, their look is similar to unglazed porcelain. I'm also fond of the heavier resin CP used way-back-when. (I'm not as fond of their current mix. The tooth is still nice, but it's disturbingly light in comparison to the formula they were using when I got my first Delfs-)

    18. I think the hype can bring about disappointment for some. If there wasn't so much talk about how great they are, people might not consider the small problems they have that much of an issue. The things I find wrong with Volks aren't exclusive to Volks at all - theres plenty of companies out there with dolls that are less than stellar in the posing department. But once you hear "poses like a dream" a heap of times, you can expect something more than what you get. Nothing wrong with that, and nothing wrong with people being completely happy with their purchase and not seeing what problems others see either.

    19. I do like Volks. The resin is heavy, silky and highly durable, and I have no fears of them breaking from a fall. Granted, I haven't handled a lot of dolls, but I really like the quality of Volks resin. I think Dollstown resin has a similar heft, although the texture is quite different.

But more than that -- Volks sculpting is truly lovely in its subtlety. I recently took apart a SD13 boy to clean and package for shipping, and I was amazed by the subtlety in the shape and curve of his limbs, the slim but definitely present musculature in his calves, upper arms, torso and back. His feet and hands had these little curves and and folds too. I was quite impressed, because my Dream of Doll DOT boy has nowhere the same calibre of subtle detailing in his body.

I also have a MSD girl and I'm very much in love with her sculpt, although she doesn't have as much the body detailing as SD13 boy. I am a little bummed by the lack of posability (no double-jointed elbows is a big minus), but what poses my girl can do, she does very well: sits so gracefully, and stands like a rock, and all very naturally. I haven't sueded/wired/KIPped her yet, so I think she'll pose even better when I do!

I'm in two minds about Volks: on one hand, I love the resin and the bodies, but I also like good posability. Hoping for a MSD (non-SDC) body with double joints... probably a pipe dream! (And dreaming of a Volks face that I like, and like enough to drop all that cash for!)

    20. I love my Volks dolls. No idea why you are having issues with yours.

I have a Shinydoll and I consider them to be crazy perfect posers and still I am satisfied with my Volks. The resin is perfectly beautiful and the dolls are not poor posers although my SD is a bit more stiff than I would like her to be. I once owned a very poor posing doll that I sold so I know what it is. I have SDs and SD13s. and all of my Volks dolls stood up straight out of the box.

If you feel that people think you are bashing the company you might reconsider the wording of your title. It sounds rather negative and could possibly be misunderstood. Although I think you sound perfectly nice.

      Good luck with your dolls.
