Do dolls really get that heavy?

May 9, 2022

    1. So I own a Granado doll Titan, that's a solid 12 pounds of resin. Is he heavy? Yes, yet I've taken him to doll meets. (Where he stayed on a table vs being carried around.) I've a lot of dolls in just about all sizes in my collection, and I can safely say even the little ones can feel heavy after a long day of carrying them with you everywhere. Double so at like a con where there are less places to set a doll down safely. But as others said heavy becomes kind of relative, based on a lot of factors like your strength, the dolls weight, how long you have been carrying it etc.

    2. it's also true that even dolls of the same size can vary dramatically in weight! my napidoll/volks hybrid is the smallest of my SDs but she still might weigh the most, just because volks resin is Heavy. for going to meets or any other event where you will need to Transport a doll, I highly recommend a proper carrying case! doesn't have to be specifically made for dolls, but something secure and comfortable to carry is a must.

    3. Omg really ? I already purchased a feeple60 lucywen head , plus carol feeple60 outfit , but still I do not have a feeple60 body . Until now I have only minifees and pukifees . But feeple60 are 60 cm . Are they heavy and posing difficult for photoshoots ? I will get so sad , if yes .

    4. Don't panic - this thread has basically established that "heavy" is subjective, and a lot depends on the individial doll AND the individual person. You may find your feeple is fine for posing and you don't find it particularly heavy.

EDITED TO ADD: By way of an example, I carried all of these dolls (five SD's, two MSD's an a couple of tinies) to a meet in bags by public transport without any problems, and three of those SD's are on Volks bodies which is supposedly a particularly weighty resin.:

    5. Absolutely like Teddy says, it depends! I personally just don't bring my f60s outside because I don't care to carry them that far, but I move them around my room plenty for sewing or just relocating, and they're my absolute favorite to pose of the dolls I have. If it's a brand new body though it might be a little squeaky sounding at first because of the fresh elastic :XD:

    6. Carrying ~60cm dolls around the house or yard has never been a problem for me. The times I carried one on a 1+ mile walk for photos I have perhaps said some unsavory words to my beloved doll regarding her weight.

    7. The HID body from Iplehouse is the heaviest doll I own. He is 70+ but he is heavier than the 75 IDealian body!
I barely take him out and even if I take him out I barely pose or take pictures of him. I like larger dolls, but personally prefer lighter dolls like 65+ dolls

    8. I mostly have SD size dolls in my collection, and they range in height from 58cm to 62cm. All of my Resinsoul and Bobobie dolls are not too heavy. Especially the girls, who are 58cm and 60cm. Even the boys, who are all around 62c, are not particularly heavy.
However, i have one boy who is a Doll Leaves head on a 62cm Doll Zone body, and he seems very heavy to me. I can still handle him ok, but every time I go to lift him, I'm surprised how heavy and solid he feels.

    9. The heaviest doll I have is SOOM Mega Gem Phonolus who is 68cm! As someone who owns mostly SD dolls, in my opinion they're not too heavy if you just pick them up and carry them around for a short while. However, the longer you carry them, the heavier they will feel especially if you don't have a carrying bag/case or something. I don't think weight necessarily makes it harder to pose; that depends more on how the doll is strung, how good the joints are, sueding, etc. I suppose it's a little more laborious since smaller adjustments can be hard to keep in place due to weight, for example a small arm or leg lift. But again, that can hopefully be helped with sueding. Overall, I think all sizes take some getting used to in terms on weight and posing!

    10. I've carried all sizes of dolls, and man any SD+ size dolls on the fore arm for a long period of time is just unwise LOL
Now I just carry them around in my doll backpack, it makes things so much easier and can really save your arm.

But I think it's totally worth it though, they are pretty ok on the back for me. I've carried 2 SD size dolls on my back for a few hours and it wasn't that bad.

    11. About ten years ago I carried an 80cm doll in a carrier on a hike around Mt Tam to takes pics. He's actually not as heavy as an Iplehouse EID or SOOM Mega Gem, he's just tall, but it was not a good idea. He got really heavy by the end of the day and my back was really unhappy. That doll hasn't left the house since. :|

I also took a Kid Delf on a vacay to Japan. On days where we were shopping, having the extra weight of even a small doll on top of purchases was manageable but it added up, so after the first foray, it was just easier to leave him at the hotel. In Kyoto, I ended up taking him on a walk through Fushimi Inari for photos (there were three of us, each with a mini). He stayed in my backpack until we found a good spot for photos, and that was doable as a planned day.

For local doll meets I usually carry two large dolls in a double carrier. I take the bus everywhere and since you never know how crowded the ride will be, more dolls would be difficult. The farthest I generally have to walk is about, 1/2 a mile between my house and the bus or from the bus to the meet location. Again, it's doable but not ideal if you have to carry anything else. It's really helpful that I know I get to put them down for several hours in between carrying them.

So it depends on the doll and what you're doing.

Weight can be a factor in posing, but engineering and stringing are really the deciding factor in poseability.

    12. As many other commenters have already mentioned, these dolls heaviness is relative, not only to the doll size and actual weight, but also the person's own strength and stamina. I'm a lazy bum, I don't like exercising in any way, shape or form. I am short, scrawny and old as dust. I can't carry my 67cm male around and not get cramps or tingling on the arm I'm carrying him with. I enjoy doing body blush, so when I do so and he's all strung together, it is a huge nightmare the next day on my hands and whole arm. Probably what most people feel after a workout for the first time -- it wasn't easier 19-ish-years-ago, when I was much younger. I was till as lazy (maybe a bit less) as I am today, but younger! It was still a pain in the gut-hole carrying my larger two males around my house. Dressing them wasn't a huge deal, it is harder to dress tinier dolls even if they don't weight much, because I'm clumsy. Most of these are heavier than most other kinds of fashion dolls of similar sizes, because their resin is heavier than most other plastics -- the BJD I own have thicker walls/shells as well, than most of the fashion dolls I own of similar sizes, so that also adds to the bulk of their weight.

Posing them is a struggle for me, because I suck at it. It's not so much due to their weight for most of my heavier dolls (which are probably all the ones above 40cm). My larger males can stand like a rock, when they have new elastics installed. My 40cm-ish not as heavy male has trouble standing, only because Fairyland gave him tiny feet, compared to his overall body weight and broadness. It makes standing him an actual balancing act. Otherwise, their weight is not an issue for posing, just their proportions and my lack of ability. Carrying the larger ones is a nightmare, I wouldn't take them outside, because I have no reasons to do so (I'm a weirdo, I don't socialize much outside my small friends' circle, avoid sunlight at all costs, am afraid of bugs, and lead a particular diet), but I drive everywhere so I wouldn't have to carry their weight anyway, if I was somehow motivated to take them out for some reason.

    13. Thank you so much for your answer . After your answer , I feel better . I saw and other answers that they are not too heavy , so I am ok . I will see and I will decide as soon as possible .

I love your collection . Did you ever weight them to see how many kilos are all of them together ? I do not have yet so big collection . I have minifee Dina doe fullset , minifee carol fullset ,minifee lucywen fullset , minifee sia fullset ,pukifee ante and soon feeple60 carol . I am not sure how to upload pictures here .

    14. Thanks. The picture shows just the handful I picked to take to that particukar meet - it's around a sixth of my resin family.

{laugh!} That would require a level of organisation that is alien to my nature.

    15. My standard 60cm SD girls are as heavy as I’m willing to get lol.

    16. Standard SD's in general aren't particularly heavy, however, when it comes to extended carrying, then your muscles will definitely start to feel it. But that's the same with anything.

    17. I thought my 62cm doll was heavy until I received my ID75 I’ve only been lugging the ID around the house for photo spots, and he already makes my arms hurt. I can’t imagine carrying him further distances without a carrying case.

    18. A heavy doll only bothers me when I'm struggling to dress and undress them. I don't take my dolls anywhere, so carrying them is not an issue. But sometimes when trying to change their clothes, it's like wrestling a cat. It's better now that I'm wiring them, but with the ones I still need to wire, their heft is more of an issue. They like to fight me.
One thing I do enjoy is just holding a doll while I'm here on DOA.

    19. I have arthritis, the curse of getting old. But I thought it wasn't being helped by having big dolls; like 65cm or bigger. It wasn't just carrying them but it was posing them as bigger dolls can be tricky to get to pose let alone stand long enough for photos. After selling all my big boys and girls I found my hands didn't get better and I really missed my big guys. So will be slowly getting a couple back and while I won't be trekking with them to meet ups or on road trips. I can at least take photos in my back yard or in my doll room.

    20. I'm ion the same boat for the most part. Ailing health and age takes it's toll so I've been staying away from taking my SDs anywhere and mostly concentration on MSD, YOs and tinies.
