Do face-ups change the way you feel about your doll?

Jun 29, 2009

    1. So far it seems that, without a custom (by me) or modified face-up, I'm not doing so well on bonding, personally. I got Gabriel with a factory face-up, and had a total "blah" reaction to him (which is really disappointing when it's your first doll, too!), until I finally went at him with a magic eraser and some Winsor and Newton, and redid the whole thing. Even though it wasn't great, it helped so much! (Now he's the one sitting above my desk while I work!)

Other than the Puki I bought in the marketplace, now, everyone I've bought has come blank, and the ones I haven't worked on yet I haven't bonded with yet, either. (And the Puki did get some custom painting and blushing done, too; she was cute out of the box, but she was MINE when she was done.)

    2. Faceups are the key to my dolls characters, for example I have two dolls that are the same mold, both have different facups that are completely different, they correspond to their characters personality and look [[ones a goddess of death and destruction and the other is a fire dragoness]] so in other words they make a huge diffrence on how I feel about them [[I usually go through 3 or 4 faceups before I get the right one, thankfully I do my own or I would be broke XD]]

    3. Face-up does indeed make a great difference. I am glad that my first boy, he has the company face-up but I bonded with him very well. It was because I fell in love with Sha and how he looks, but now, he has his own distinct look despite having the default face-up. As for my newest boy, my DS Hound, he had a rather subtle and soft face-up.. At first it bothers me, especially when he looks so.. soft and vulnerable. I knew I had to do something so I retouched his face-up, darkened it.. Darkened his eyebrows and the sort. And right now, I just love him to bits.

    4. YES lol

Silence with company faceup - looked like a girl
Silence with my faceup ver. 1 - looked not like a girl...but horrible still
Silence with my faceup ver. 2 - at least i wasnt thinking of selling him as much now
Silence with faceup by SophieSoliday - instant win ^^

      end of story. lol

    5. Good gravy yes. I've ended up having so many faces either done from blanks or wiped factory and redone. It's funny, I'm also finding that sometimes all it needs is a change of eyes or eyelashes to completely change a doll. Even the right wig can make or break a face-up.

    6. You know, this is so true! I had a different wig on Adelheid yesterday since she got a new outfit, and she looked so much better with this other wig. I'll still do another face-up soon, but at least I can look at her/bring her places with me now. >.<

    7. I don't do faceups nor have more than just my Sora, but sometimes when I see someone's else's Felian with a better face-up, I get kind of jealous and kind of angry at Sora. =| Maybe one day I'll get her a better face-up, but maybe not.

    8. The face up, for me, is a key component to the doll's personality. I didn't really bond with my MD Ryu when I first got him because he didn't have a face up. But after I gave him one, he seemed much more like the character I imagined instead of just a hunk of resin.

    9. For me, since I am to afraid/can't do face-ups.. Face-ups tend to be one the the things that make me fall in love with a doll! When getting my doll, I didn't have a name or personality for her. She become a new OC. But her face-up just fit with what I came up with for her personality. Her face may look sweet.. But she would tear your head off if she had to.. Or wanted to. I also fell hard for Crobidolls Ys B Type.. I don't know if the personality would go with how he looks. Or how I want him to look. But even if it doesn't, there is always time to change things around.

So, all in all. I suppose face-ups do tend to make up some of their personality. But even if the ones you think could fit.. Or the face up you put on your doll doesn't fit, when you thought it would. It can always be changed. ;D

    10. to me the face-up is a very important part of my doll, after all its his/her FACE.

when Haplo came in as my first doll I ordered him without face up, and went to a friend who helped me give him a face up, it helped me bond with him even more than I already had.

I also ordered cychwynn my second doll without face-up, but that backfired, she arrived broken, so for a long time I could not bond with her, and when I did get up so working on het face-up myself, it just did not turn out the way she had to be. this affected my bonding with her so much that I was pondering selling her, and I really did not want to do that cos I love her. so as a last resort I have sent het off to a Face-up artist for a custom face up to see If I can re bond with her when she gets back.

finally my third full doll Aithne came to me as a fullset, so already face-uped, with the company face up from Fairyland. I must say it does not bother me at all I was still able to costumise her into my idea of a sweet little demon, so that turned out better than expected.

    11. Yes. I had issues with being ashamed of my F-15's plain face, but due to it being his Volks original I wanted it to stay that way for sentimental reasons. I also never wanted to part with his head, I was so worried it would get lost or damaged. However I ended up leaving the country and couldn't bring my dolls with me, so I sent out his head to one of my favorite artists whom I've bought from before, and didn't have to worry or miss him much.

He came home and was absolutely beautiful, his face up was everything I had wanted from his Volks one that I was unable to communicate to the FCS people in the first place. If I hadn't fixed his face I might've contemplated selling all my dolls to fund my trip, I'm glad I didn't.

    12. I have a DIM Flora, one of my dream dolls. She came to me second hand with what I believe was her default face-up. Sure, she looked pretty and all. She did not want the personality I had wished for her though. She became more and more distant to me as the months flew by and I was nearly thinking of trying to trade or sell her.
But then I wiped her face off and I could finally see the beautiful Flora that I had yearned for again.
I take forever to give my dolls a new face-up though so currently she is in the making as I'm also modding her torso to fix that awful DIM curl back.

    13. For sure! A face-up can make or break a doll. With the kabillion El's out there they would all be rather boring if they all had the same stock face-up.
I don't particularly like the aesthetics of Volks dolls and to tell you the truth there is only one mold that I would activally buy if I had the chance (Souseiseki/Suiseiseki) and I think that is because s/he looks like a large Yo-sd. Yet every so often there is a face-up on a Volks doll that will make me sit up and say I wannit!

    14. I have to get either custom face-up or do faceup on my own, or I won't feel like my kids are mine... x3x idunno, it's just... with a unique faceup, I feel that they're more individual and unique, and not just another mass-produced bjd (no offence meant to those who get their kids with factory/default faceups)... I'd still be able to bond with my kid, but I'd have the need to redo the faceup totally spoiling my time with him/her. .x.

    15. Oh, certainly.

I had a Bory girl with the default face up and she looked so sad all the time, I just couldn't stand it. I kept wondering what had I done to hurt her feelings? :( (yes, I know I'm silly)

Now, I'm attempting to do my doll's face up on my own. I haven't been very happy with any of them so far, but I haven't wanted to give up on my doll yet, though I wont deny, I've gotten very discouraged. I just like his facial structure and his character too much to mind how bad my face ups are.

      But, the array of expressions I have given him all have evoked such different feelings from me. I've given him a sad look, a tired look, a bored look, and he currently has a kind of mean, inquisitive look, which doesn't really suit him at all ^^;

It's amazing how a piece of sculpted resin with paint on it can pull of human expressions so well. Not, only that, but it makes us feel something. Just proves that these dolls really are an art form, no matter how badly painted their face is.

    16. I fully think that faceups change how I feel about my dolls. I'm currently going through serious frustration every time I look at Lirael. I sealed too close to her face, and she's got a shiny streak across her nose, dust got in it, and is making her face look dirty, her eyebrows are the completely wrong color, and I'm not happy with it.

It doesn't stop me loving her, of course, but it's driving me bonkers. I know I can get what I want out of her face, I just have to try it again...

Sucks, though, because I love how her lips and eyes themselves came out. :sweat

    17. Before I fixed his faceup my Mathonwy looked like a vampire. Now he looks alive and personable instead of sulky and sultry, which is NOT his character at all.

    18. Oh....I just ordered a Bory girl!

I also have Soulkid Katie.A who also has a perpetual sad face with certain face-ups I've done (the pout...oh when there's something "she wants" she gets it, I tell you).

Dolls that have a sad face for a sculpt can be made to look otherwise. If you do it *just right* with some molds, you can get a curious look out of them. It's also pretty easy to give them an angry or fierce look.

(I'm a total sucker for sad looking dolls. It's like..."they look so sad! I want to make them happy...")

I'm sure there's something you can do for your Bory. If you go on Flickr, search for Bory Girl. There's a bunch of pictures of a Bory named "Emilie" and she doesn't look nearly so sad as most Bory girls tend to look.

    19. Face-ups definitely make a difference in how I feel about a doll. I've gotten 2 dolls with factory face-ups that looked nothing like their promo pics. I was immediately turned off to them & even after I re-did them I still never bonded & ended up selling them both.

Then there are those dolls that I'd never seriously thought about buying until I saw them for sale with great artists' face-ups. These dolls are very special to me as the artist really brought out the beauty & expression of the sculpt. There are also other dolls that I've enhanced the existing face-up on & they've taken on stronger personalities.

So yes, face-ups are very important to me & directly affect how I feel about a doll.

    20. the faceup definately effects how I feel about my doll, so their faceups change ever so slightly every few months. I tend to neglect/get bored with my dolls if they look the same for too long. :\
