Do face-ups change the way you feel about your doll?

Jun 29, 2009

    1. Kyoshi is the only doll I have with default face up which I LOVE wholly! the face up is almost 5 years old so it's kind of unique because DOD doesn't do that style anymore. I have yet to see a DOD Zen with the same face up as kyoshi's (which is good for me^^) it fits his character completely and I know I will never change it because I'll end up regretting it. The face up looks just as great and beautiful as the first day he arrived (I take very good care of everything I love and kyoshi is my favorite :aheartbea). I should add that Hayden (DOD Tender Too) is from this year and has a face up by DOD but I changed his default eyebrows and I'm thinking of changing his eyes painting too ( I love his lips though). Shane (SDF Howl) also has a face up from Luts but it's not his default (it's from another doll) it fits his character very well as well, so it's staying. All my other kids have face ups according to their personalities (ie. not default or from the company)

    2. Oh that's too bad :( That's kind what I'm afraid of. The default faceups may not be exactly what I want but it does suit the doll and personality.
I'm afraid if I change it the feel of the personality if the doll will be lost.
I hope you are able to re-capture it eventually. Don't give up!

That's great that your Kyoshi had stayed perfect for 5 years!
With your Hayden is kind of how I feel that certain parts are perfect and I don't really want to change and others I just want to tweak a little, like the color or small details.
Mostly on my Yori, Rose, she is a little older style than my other 2 and had some slight damage when I got her.

    3. The faceup is important to me too, so I will always do the faceup by myself in order to fit me.:D

    4. I ordered my Callahan with a default faceup because I thought it fit his character. I suppose I'll feel a bit sad when I eventually have to wipe it (although it seems to be a very good faceup - he's a year old and it's got no sign of wear), but I'll just commission a new one that is similar to the one he's got now. I don't think it'll change the way I feel about him, if anything I'll probably love him more!

    5. Yes . You coud have 2 same bjd head but with different face up . They will always have one you prefer.

    6. I would have to say yes. I had a doll and I was thinking about selling her. But I sent her off to get a faceup done as a last effort to see if I wanted to keep her. And I am in LOVE! So if you think that you want to sell your doll just give them a new faceup first before hand, you might fall in love all over again. :)

    7. I think a face-up can totally change a character quite easily. Depending on the colors, materials, and overall mood of the makeup it can change how you see the doll. I much more enjoy my doll's character now that they have a good face-up!

    8. Yes, definitely! The faceup makes the dolls' personality shine through, and if it doesn't look right I'm not completely satisfied with the doll. I usually prefer custom faceups, but if the default is really nice I won't hesitate to order the faceup with the doll :)

    9. To me, faceups breathe life into the doll. Before their faceup, they are a beautiful sculpture, perhaps with life trapped inside it. When they get their faceup, their personality is set free and brought forth for all to see.

    10. I think, the face up is very important.
I have many same face doll ( sophie elf, sophie wolfy, sophie dorothy and sophie basic). they face up and character are different.

    11. How much does the face-up reflect the way you feel about your doll?

A face-up can make all the difference - for example, I don't much like the Volks School A sculpt, but I looked at a lot of them when a friend was looking into buying one, and saw one that I liked so much I had to buy it purely because of the way the face-up made it look.

What did you do when you felt this way about your doll/the face-up?

I do some of my own face-ups, I'm not very good but can occasionally attain better/more-passable results, in which case, if they suit the doll, I keep them, if not I wipe and retry or I send them to a better face-up artist for a proper job. I've rarely not liked the results that have come back to me, it doesn't happen often and the notable time it was due to a number of factors that were neither my fault nor that of the face-up artist in question (although it was upsetting to both of us)

How much face-ups effect your view on dolls

A lot, there are things about some face-up styles that I find very off-putting, and will usually result in my deciding that the doll needs repainting. Stuff like: frowning/expressive eyebrows - "chocolate chips"(dark spots in the corners of the lips) - lips that are dark in the middle and fade out at either side - face-ups that look like heavy make-up (especially on very young-looking sculpts) - eyebrows that look like feathers or chevrons pointing out to the sides of the face (they look so fake to me) - heavy/dark eyeliner - unhappy/miserable/frowning face-ups....

If you do your own face-ups, do negative feelings (if they ever happen) result from frustration or just the way they look in general?

Frustration over the way they look in general - As I said, I'm not very good at face-ups so there are often a lot of failed face-ups before I manage one that's worth keeping.

    12. Yes it really does! An example was that my SOOM kivi had an old faceup that I wasn't really happy with, so I changed it to another, and after that I totally fell in love all over again. (+ I finally got to buy some kivi ears and tail off the marketplace instead of the luts ears) <3

    13. Yes, faceups definitely affect the way I feel about a doll. My first doll has had something like 8 faceups over the course of 7 years, when I have done one I really like I play with him often. I made the mistake of wiping his faceup, which was very good and I really quite liked, almost a year ago, and I am not sure he has been out of his box since. I have GOT to make myself give him a new face.

    14. Yes! Faceups are the most important part of the whole style for me, others being eyes, wig and clothes.

If I get a head that is blank I'll like it and all, appreciate the nice sculpt but it's not yet my lovable character. When they have a meh faceup then they're only meh to me, I can bond with them but they're not perfect yet. So whenever I finish a faceup and it's just perfect to me at that moment, fitting the character so well, it's instantly like LOVE +100~!

    15. Faceup really makes or breaks the doll for me. I don't care if it's a default or a stupidly expensive artist faceup, if it doesn't suit the look I'm going for it just frustrates me.

This used to be a big problem for me when I was commissioning artists regularly. Waiting a couple of months for a faceup only to find that it either didn't change enough about a doll I was waffling on to make me love them (I had to figure out the hard way that underlying sculpts couldn't be masked no matter how much talented faceup trickery was involved), or there was something about the way the artist interpreted my instructions that wasn't really what I wanted (a doll meant to look sly coming home with an expression like a tiny joyless thundercloud, for example) was the last straw with many of them because I couldn't imagine sinking more time and money into them. When I think back, I realize that a lot of dolls I sold over the years would've been saved if I'd been able to change their faceups myself.

Now that I can do it myself, there's still that knee-jerk "Whoa, you're different!" reaction whenever I change something major about a face, but it seems like less of a big deal when I know I can just sit down and change it whenever I'm in the mood. It's easier to look at the parts of a faceup I don't like and earmark it for tweaking later so I don't get as stuck on it.

    16. I think that if you change the dolls faceup it can even feel like a new doll. Changes the dolls personality completely. I saw this through some recent faceup work that my friend had done on her dolls. It was super exciting. :)

    17. The faceup is everything, understandably so since it's what gives them character IMO. I have been unhappy with a company faceup. I was so disappointed that I never ordered another company faceup afterwards. If I'm going to throw away that much money and be disappointed like that, I might as well do it myself. Granted, my skills aren't as good as a professional's, but I am the only person who can get it right. If I do it wrong, I can just do it again. No money and no one else's time wasted. I've already invested so much in materials anyways, so I might as well.
-How much face-ups effect your view on dolls
Usually, I have to find some owner pics, or even company pics, that show the doll can do well. If not, then I have serious doubts about that sculpt.
-If you do your own face-ups, do negative feelings (if they ever happen) result from frustration or just the way they look in general?
I have hated some of my own faceups. Usually, it makes me not want to look at the doll or take photos of it. I don't always get the hint, but as soon as I realize what's happening, I'll redo the faceup.

    18. Oh yes it is ^^ both of my favorite sculpt are come in blank head so I did their face up, there are grumpy bossy one xD and the sleepy smiling one as well. I did face up for my dolls it by myself because I don't want to send them out to face up artist after a hard time saving and waiting them back home hahaha xD I am not a patient enough for sure so this is why I did it by my own. And voila face ups are really matter for their personality also changing whole entire look for dolls, I used to changed face up for one of my doll (to practising as well) before because sometimes I feel like it didn't fit his character, after a few times now I guess he is just what I want. Now they're perfect and I love them so much.

    19. Yeh the face up does seem to make a huge difference, Im looking at buying my first dolln now, and the first thing I look at seems to be the make up XD

    20. as a NON face up artist (ya never gonna even try lol... bad idea lol)

yes and no... for many dolls the sculpt is always going to be the sticking bit... I often go through the 'blanks' in IH's doll choice to see which one fits what I want... THEN the face up... There are some things that are 'must' have or not have as the case may be. I am fairly particular about eyebrows... none of those 'wingy' ones that look ready to fly off a face. I generally don't like freckles but have seen a couple of dolls that look 'right' with them...

I also am well aware of how a face up can completely change the look of a doll... make it so you may not realize what the sculpt is... even if I own one O_o. If I see a good face up on a doll even a 'crappy' one won't make me like a doll less... This is why I love owner pics.... If a doll comes out with a 'not to my taste' look I wait for other versions. Most of my dolls have had some kind of custom tweaking to thier basic default faces. But the dolls... always loved them or I wouldn't have them lol. And if I didn't like a face.... fix it!... ^^

overall I'm fairly flexible about faces. I don't go bonkers over the tiniest details (in a negative way), I do find elements I just love though. Currently there is one doll I may change eventually. I had seen the look I wanted but couldn't find the exact reference to give the artist. so I went with a make it like the other version... I gave her the 'fantasy' head to use as a reference and trusted her to adapt it to the 'human' version... it's wonderful... next time it will be in the originally wanted color palette I found.... a month later lol. Just to note she matched a 'company' face up ^^.
