Do higher prices entice you?

Sep 3, 2010

    1. I tend to think that higher prices mean better quality, and I've seen it reflected in some of the doll stuff I own. For instance, I bought a really cheap ($10 or less) long braided wig, and I ended up having to cut out several braids and trimming the ends in order for me to be remotely happy with it. Whereas my Jpop wig (bought second hand) is infinitely better, in my opinion, and also much more expensive (about $20 more, I think).

At the same time, I know that just because something costs more, it doens't mean it's better. I recently got a Soom wig, which is very difficult to style and has a problem with flyaways. The opposite is true for cheaper stuff, as well. We have a cheap fur wig that is nearly every bit as good as a more expensive fur wig.

Now I just mentioned the wigs as examples, but I'm of the opinion that price shouldn't necessarily equal quality. Feedback and overall customer satisfaction mean a lot more to me than price.

    2. Oh dear! That is quite scary!
I am in the middle and find that by going with my gut instinct, I normally come out
with an even result! I find that there are many things that are made of the same quality
material as a higher replica. But because of the brand name of the higher, it will be priced
      as such.

I wonder if 'Brand' name exist in the BJD world, and if so, are they similar to the human
      shopping experience?

    3. I second that "all about facial features" xD
No matter how expensive a doll is, if I can't fall in love with his/her face, I won't consider purchasing.
Sure company reputation is also importanta, but for me, I have to feel the connection first.
      xD

    4. Personally if I see a sculpt that I want I'll get it, doesn't matter what the price is (unless its really insanely high). I'll only reconsider if other owners of it report problems with this or that. So the price doesn't really matter much to me. More expensive just means more saving, cheaper just means I save a little to go into my next purchase.

    5. Not really. I like to look at owner's pictures and reviews before buying, so I know the quality and don't have to play the this-expensive-doll-is-better-than-that-one game. Though, there are some highly priced dolls that hold sway over me partly because of their price. > 3 >

    6. NEVER! heh i'm a poor college student who also works a full-time job so higher price doesn't automatically excite me, but if it's something i really want then price is no big deal.

    7. No. Not at all. It's all about how the doll looks and how it could be the character I have planned. If their are two dolls that I like equally, however, I will go for the cheaper one. I am after all a college student and I have to watch my spending.

    8. Hmm... No.

When I see a dress I like worth £40 and in a cheaper shop the same dress for £20, I'd buy the cheaper one, without a doubt. Higher prices put me off because (for instance, if I was going all out on a Soom MD) it always bring me back to the whole "it is just a doll..." problem that I think most people have when they first see them.

Also, there is the chance that I don't bond with the doll. It'd be a lot harder to swallow with an exepnsive doll, although they don't lose their value that much. Still, high prices would do anything but entice me. I usually just wince and think "well, that's all this money gone from my bank account :sigh"

    9. i just know you get what you pay for. like when you buy a guitar, if you settle for something cheap you will
get what you can afford, if you can afford something higher pricey then you get better material and more features.
so money does play a role somewhere, but i dont think just because something is high priced means your getting
good quality, if your not carefull you can even get ripped off. i mean for example glorydoll makes some beautiful
dolls for around 500+ but their bodies are not so great wich is why some people like to buy seperate bodys
to go with their heads. In loongsoul they have dolls with great poseable bodys for about the same price 500+
and you get a head with a great poseable body. compare loongsoul to glorydoll, were talking about quality and features(some of the things you should take into account instead of just buying something high priced because you believe its good top notch quality)

    10. Higher prices are a turn off for me. It really makes me debate for a long time whether or not I actually want to buy it. If a cheaper doll company had a sculpt that I really loved, I wouldn't rule it out because of price. It would make me really excited if I saw a cheap sculpt that I loved. But that said, there are companies that I really love and I know they are on the higher end price wise, but I know they are good quality and I've had great experiences with them in the past. So in that case I would pay the price to buy their dolls not because they "might" be better quality, but because I know the work they have done in the past.

    11. Not at all. I buy my dolls based on how they look. If I find a very pretty doll who is inexpensive, I buy her. If I find a very pretty doll who is expensive, I save up, and buy her. ;)

    12. I buy my dolls based on what I want also. It doesnt really matter the price to me it matters the resin quality and the mold and body sculpt and how they fit in with my story etc.

    13. Higher prices scare me, knowing I can't afford them or it'll take forever and a half to save up for. My favorite dolls are LUTS tho, so I am not even really sure about that. I have a ringdoll, mainly because she was what was available, but still very beautiful. I am thinking of trying to make her mean more to me than the pricey sculpts I can never afford... or will take me years to save for, and buy things for my existing doll instead.

    14. Expensive prices make me curious. What type of molds and resin was used-silicone molds and platinum cure resins are particularly expensive but resin artists love them. I also like looking at the sculpt of the head and the body, particularly the Soom bodies. Does all this mean I'll buy? Maybe, maybe not. The doll does have to be aesthetically pleasing to me in order to want to buy it.

    15. I won't buy a doll just because they're highly priced. In fact, I tend to go for less expensive dolls (since I'm only a teen, without a job) but I research and see what's good quality and what's not. For example, DollZone's dolls are a little less expensive than other companies, but they're super sturdy & poseable, and their faces are my taste. Besides, I probably wouldn't spend over $600 on a basic doll (without wig, clothes, etc) anyway because I'd rather have more less expensive dolls than one expensive one. Not that I'm cheap, I'm just young, and who knows, my views may change in the long run. x]
I do admire people that work hard and save for those special dolls, though! I mean, of course they're beautiful :O!
