Do they HAVE to have a faceup?

Dec 7, 2013

    1. For me a doll doesnt have to have a faceup. I think they look peaceful and clear with out one, so some of mine sit blank for months before getting a face up and I dont mind. When they come with a sleeping face sometimes I dont paint that one ever.
And no it people dont choose to paint their doll- I can see it as finished if that is what they want.

    2. Painting the faces on my dolls is a part of the getting attached to them process for me. It's hard for me to get really attached to a doll that I haven't slaved over it a bit. I'm by no means a professional but I am a painting major so I think my faceup skills are pretty okay.

I think a doll can look just as beautiful without a face up. Sometimes I see a, in my eyes, low quality face up and I want to fix it but then I remember how I feel when I paint my dolls and why I like to so then it stops bothering me.

I don't think I'd ever own a face-up less doll. I'd at least want to add some pastel coloring to them.

    3. I personally find dolls with faceups to be more aesthetically pleasing than without, in most cases. But whether or not I'd consider it "finished" would depend on whether it was my doll - I want mine to have faceups, so one without one would feel unfinished to me. Someone else's doll, though, might be perfectly "finished" without a faceup if that's what suited the owner.

As for whether I think dolls with "unprofessional" faceups would be better off with none, on a purely aesthetic level I think BJDs in general look better when they at least have eyebrows, even simplistic ones. However, there are so many different sculpts out there that I'm sure I could find one that I thought looked just as good without a faceup as with one.

    4. I always plan for my dolls to have a faceup, because it's an essential part of their character and I just prefer the aesthetic of dolls with faceups. I have seen dolls with no faceups and very minimal faceups and they are pretty, but it's not something I have planned for my current collection :)

    5. Does a doll have to have a faceup to be 'complete'?
I think so, yes. Otherwise the doll looks blank and emotionless...unless that's what the owner was going for...but it just looks incomplete to me.

Would you think less of a doll without a faceup than a doll with a faceup?
Not really, especially when they are not my doll. When I order dolls, I tend to add on the face-up from the company as I am just starting to explore the adventure of painting a face/make-up on my doll and often do not like what I produce (practicing on a practice head is great!)

Do you think that 'unprofessional' faced-up dolls would look better with no faceup?
Or is it better for a doll to have any faceup rather than remain blank?
As I have started to venture into the world of painting face-ups I know how hard it can be. At least that doll has some emotion/character with the 'unprofessional' face-up and not black without anything on the face.

And finally, do you have/can you imagine owning a doll that will remain faceup-less forever?
Not forever. I have to have some kind of face on my doll, otherwise it's just creepy and boring.

    6. For human dolls, I find face-ups essential. For robotic or ghostly dolls, I could appreciate a face-up-less design. I wouldn't judge anyone for having different taste than me, though!

    7. When I see a bjd doll without faceup I cannot say whether I like it or not...when I see the same doll with ace up then I might fall in love!!!! and by that I mean that bjd dolls are meant to have a face up so as to be unique (not necessarly a faceup from the original firm!!!)Unoas e.g. are so different with their faceups and always look swell in ever different face t their creator might give to them!! SO I thnk the bd dolls do need their faceups. o course this only my opinion!

    8. I don't think dolls need face-ups, but they look a bit bland without! While I love all my dolls face-up-less, I still prefer to give them a face-up so as to give them more attitude and lively-ness.

    9. I will always want a face-up on my dolls. Without it I find them a bit bland and lifeless. I also think the face-up helps bring out their character. For dolls that are human at least they need eyebrows/lashes and a bit of lip color and blushing, even just a fine very natural look. That's just my choice though and I think others should do whatever they like with their dolls:)

    10. Does a doll have to have a faceup to be 'complete'?
No. For one thing, that is COMPLETELY up to the OWNER. It's their doll and other people's opinions should not be important.

I happen to prefer faceups, but that's just me. There are some dolls that I've seen that I think are beautiful without faceups. I just don't happen to own any of those sculpts!

Would you think less of a doll without a faceup than a doll with a faceup?
      For someone else's doll? No.
For my dolls: prefer faceups, but wouldn't think less of them.

Do you think that 'unprofessional' faced-up dolls would look better with no faceup?
No. I like faceups and I've given my own dolls unprofessional faceups!
For other dolls--it's all up to their owners!!!

Or is it better for a doll to have any faceup rather than remain blank?
I prefer faceups, usually. But I've seen some dolls that are beautiful blank, as I said.

Do you have/can you imagine owning a doll that will remain faceup-less forever?
Don't have any, but I can imagine it.

(basically, I'm not into judging others... for anything...!)

    11. In general a doll doesn't need to have a face-up to be complete if the owner likes it without. But for me personally, I need my dolls to have face-ups before I can really bond with them. Some dolls I even find a bit creepy without a face-up.
I don't think I would ever feel less of a doll without a face-up. If that's the person's intention then great! If they want to get the doll a face (oh my goodness that sounds odd!) then they will eventually. Everything in time.
I don't think there's anything wrong with "unprofessional" face-ups so if that's what the owner wants then go for it! It makes the doll your own and you can be proud that you did something for yourself whether it be perfect or amateur. It doesn't matter. I would never think an "unprofessional" face-up is worse than a blank sculpt.
For me personally I would prefer almost anything over a blank sculpt. So I would prefer to do my own face-up even if only temporarily until the time comes when they would get a permanent face.
I doubt very much that I would ever have a doll that remained without a face-up. the day may come but I am not holding my breath.

    12. Personally I prefer my dolls to have a face-up, it does make me feel as if they are complete is a sense. Be it factory done, or personally made. Or commissioned from another, it makes them look better to me. But that's just my personal onion, if anyone prefers to have theirs blank. They have all right to do so, it's not my doll to try to say what they have to do to it.

And I do have one without a face-up at this time, and I do feel bad about it, but it doesn't make her any less a part on my family.

    13. A doll is considered 'complete' according to the owner's feelings. If you feel like your dolls are complete without a face up, then they are complete :) I don't see why you should give them a face up if it doesn't make you happy.

As for me, my dolls needs to have a face up because I feel you can achieve a lot of their personalities with the face ups. There are millions of dolls of the same mold but all of them are 'one of a kind' thanks to the different face ups the owners give them. For me, a face up is very personal and I would not be able to own a doll without a face up....I've had dolls without face ups but I never 'played' with them until I gave them a face up.

    14. In general, for me, yes. My realpuki soso is blank and bald though, because my mother saw her and liked her that way. That particular sculpt is so expressive that I don't really think it needs one.

    15. I have some dolls here in my house that are currently blank. 2 are going to stay that way at the very adamant request of my niece. Although they may get eyelashes. The other blank will get painted, but not until the rest of the planned Doll Chateau collection is finished. I want to paint them all at the same time for consistency. But I love her little face blank in the meantime.
I think it's fine to leave them blank if you like them. I think they look like little sculptures.

    16. I say to each their own.. but for me I love a faceup ;)

The artist at Volks are wonderful with their FCS orders, & it's amazing to watch all of your choices come together in your doll's face when they arrive and you pull back the tissue paper and face cover for the first time.

When you can't do the faceup for yourself.. it's a helpful to have the Company, or other talented people who offer their services.

I have a girl that has pink eyes and dark eye makeup... but my Sunlight girl has a very natural faceup.

    17. Yes, they need faceups around here. I tend to assume the doll isn't finished if his/her face is blank. So much detail in the sculpt is lost without at least some highlighting here and there, and I'm not a fan of shiny faces. For me it would be like hanging a blank canvas on the wall in my house. The sheer... untethered potential would bother me. I'd be itching to see what could be created on it.

    18. I have six heads that need face ups right now. I prefer to have face ups, but as it's now winter, I'll have to wait at least five months for the weather to improve. The only issue I have is that I'm used to seeing them blank, and when I do the face ups, they won't look the same and I'll have to get used to that!

    19. I prefer having a face-up done on my dolls, I think they look a bit creepy and unfinished without one. But to each their one, right?
