Do they really hold their worth? How "old" are YOUR dolls?

Sep 15, 2009

    1. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
      Really don't know)

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
I think yes. If it is not damaged. For me there is no difference between new and second hand doll. Cause in most cases they are in good condition.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
      No.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
My dolls are 1,5 years, 1 year, 5 month and 1 month old. If my first doll were with me, she'll be 2 years old now.
I don't know, how long I'll keep them. There are lots of difficult
situations in our life. Maybe I'll strongly need money some day... But I hope, my dolls will be always with me.

    2. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
-A doll that had been purchased once. No matter how many time ago...

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
-Yes, unless there was some damaging. There is more increasing than decreasing, unless the doll don't sell.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
-If I had such a doll, I would try to repair the damages, or modifying her a lot.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
-My oldest is 6 years old, the others are 4 and 2. I plan to keep them a loooong time.

    3. How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
My girl is 12 years old (I've only owned for less than a year), so I consider her very old. ^^ I love her very much right now and have no plans to sell her. Honestly, if I have to lower her price a ton to sell her, I'd rather keep her. She's my first doll, after all.

My boy is less than a year old, so he's a youngster. I've been too busy to really bond with him, but come Summer, I will see what happens.

    4. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
For an ABJD I would have initially said over 5 years old but then I realized I’ve had my oldest girl that long.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
Usually no, but there are a few exceptions. There seems to be—based off the Soom MDs—a certain point a few months to years after a limited release when the price spikes; if the doll in question becomes popular. I’m looking at you Purple Vesuvia. Volks limited also seem to hold to the same pattern.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
All my dolls have ‘aged’ or yellowed to a certain degree. For most of them I feel it adds to their character other than the ones that are supposed to be blue or purple. Grr you Cuprit and Lv Migma. I may try and compensate for the yellowing at some point or try to lighten them, but if I start to get to that point why am I keeping them?

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
My oldest is a Volks SDC Miko from 2006. O.o I didn’t even realize how old he was! The rest range in age from then up to the present, all--save him and one of my unoa hybrids--ordered directly from the company. I’ll probably keep them until I can no longer enjoy them properly, either due to me out growing them or having destructive kids. We’ll see.

    5. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
More than 3 years old. It's not "fresh" for me anymore. I have already felt all emotions connected with an arrival of a new doll, created a finished image for her etc. I still consider her beautiful, but not that extremely beautiful as I used to when I was dreaming of/saving for/waiting for that doll.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
It depends on a doll, but, generally, no. Since I don't have limiteds, they lose thair value little by little.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
Well, my oldest girls are Dollmore MD Lisa Rubik (2007) & tanned Supia Rosy (2008). As I'm very careful while handling dolls, they don't have any damages except some change in colour (even and hardly noticeable). I don't see any reasons why I should do something with it.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
The oldest ones were mentioned above, others were made in 2009 (1 of them), 2010 (2 of them), 2011 (3 of them), 2012 (1 of them). I love them all the way they are, and don't plan to sell them in the nearest future.

    6. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
Currently, I consider no abjd to be old. As said before some can be considered "old" by comparison only.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
Some will, some won't. 50 years from now my Bobobie sprite won't be worth much. A fullset Soom Sard or Dust of Dolls Puns, on the other hand, will probably be worth a pretty penny. It will be completely case by case when that time comes. What is the company, and sculpt? Is it fullset? If there were changes, who were the artists who made the changes? (I do believe that 40, 50 years from now that there will be artists who've made enough of a name for themselves that they can add value to a doll!)

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
      Not currently!

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
My oldest is only a little over a year. I have no current plans on getting rid of them, but I can't see into the future!

    7. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
Maybe a doll created five years and more ago ? Not sure, depending how the resin is too.
Do you think the dolls hold their value?
I don't care of the age of the doll itself, but more on its conditions, if it's yellowed, scratch, break or anything which will really low the value. In fact, I like the idea of aged-dolls which may include it has a "story" trough the years, with sometimes many owners. Some resins stand well in the times, so age doesn't bother me and it's not a criteria for lower the value, if conditions are good, in my opinion.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
I had a doll nearly 6 years old, it was never a problem and she left my home in really good condition, I think. I've a highly-damaged doll, but more recent (around 3 years), which I don't care at all, got it in a "massive" trade. It's in a box, I'm too lazy to spend times on.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?

The current oldest doll I have is 5, and three are 4. I'll keep them until I'm bored of them or the BJD in general.

    8. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
Dolls can age in their sculpt as well as their resin. Obviously yellowed dolls are old even if they are only a year old. Certain idealized sculpts can just look outdated and thus old because the style and aesthetics have changed.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
It depends. If the doll is simply a beautiful sculpt and has no damage, they can really hold on to their value or even raise it. Good faceups also help. However certain styles of dolls seem to become outdated over time and less popular so even when they are rare, they don't hold onto their value. Damaged/stained/discolored dolls do not hold onto their value.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
Yes, I plan to restore them since the color is not bad. However I don't plan to keep them as they are projects for me rather than items to keep.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
The dolls I have bought new are only 1.5 years old at the oldest. Some second hand dolls are about 4 years old. I don't know what my plans are since they change.

    9. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?

In terms the ABJDs that are discussed on DoA, 12 years old would be the oldest you can get, so from 2000 to 2006 would be be an "older" doll.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?

Monetary-wise, it depends on the doll's desirability on the marketplace. For now, it seems generally that older dolls are going for far lower than their original retail prices. Sentimental value? Well, that's measured in the heart.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?

I own a doll that is both -- A Custom House Jun with hands that look like they were nibbled on by a furry friend. I purchased him for a steal of a deal so the damage doesn't bother me. In fact, I consider them "battle scars"! I plan to continue to enjoy him.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?

My oldest doll is a decade young while my "youngest" was released just last year, and I've got lots of others that fit in between. Old and new, I plan to keep them for as long as I can enjoy them. The doll I've owned the longest is nine years old and she ain't going nowheres!

    10. I think sometimes olderdolls are a little yellow. But sanding them and spraying them regularly seems to help. I'm still going to keep them, and hopefully I can fix them!

    11. I think they do, more so if they are OOP.

    12. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
I'm impressed with any doll five years or older XD.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
I guess some do, but I don't think mine will. None of my dolls are rare.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
No. But I think that if one of my dolls got damaged, I'd try to get replacement parts and/or repair the damage. I'm not much of a technical person though, so damage really scares me and I'd think twice about buying a damaged doll off the MP.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
I've been less than a year in this hobby, and with the exception of one head, I bought my dolls new. My oldest is less than a year old! I do hope to hold on to them for, um, ever? Though I guess that I'm beginning to envision the possibility of (body) upgrades in the future. But to be honest, I'm so new that it's rather hard to imagine what I might and might not do with my dolls in the future. I certainly hope they will age beautifully and stay with me :).

    13. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
      20 years

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
Aside from resin turning colors, yes.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
One had a broken finger, which was fixed. I plan to keep him for a long time.
How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
I got my first dolls (including the one with the broken finger) in early 2008. I am still collecting. I've had dolls come and go, but then there are the keepers that haven't nor will go anywhere.

I don't worry about aging so long as said aging is yellow and not green. I have a pet peeve for green skin. I also don't mind damage, ANYTHING you love can become damaged, that doesn't mean it no longer holds sentiment. My dolls are precious to me; of the ones I still have, none could ever be sold unless updated to newer dolls of the same sculpts, with some that's possible, with others it is not.

    14. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?

I think I'll consider my doll to be old when I feel as if I've had it forever. So far my oldest doll is 3 years old, and I still consider her new XD

Do you think the dolls hold their value?

      I'm not a fan of "yellowing is damage" honestly. My dolls grow more and more valuable to me as they age. Of course I know a lot of other people disagree xD;

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?

I have a doll that yellowed pretty badly. What do I plan to do with him? He's still sitting happily on a shelf, and I still love him dearly <3 Three of my dolls have broken fingers, and I glued them back together.

Some people consider this damage too: I dyed one of my dolls and it came out really good. But a lot of people don't like dyed dolls. I've motidifed one of my dolls to have a pair of wings in the back, so its got wells now. A lot of modifications went into some of my dolls that can be considered 'damage'

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?

The only reason I would sell one of my dolls is because their shell no longer fit their character. This has only happened to me twice, and I have 21 dolls as of right now. My oldest doll is 3 years, and I don't see me selling any of them any time soon :)

    15. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?

I consider an old doll with 10+ years^^ but old is not bad if the doll was in good care.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?

If they are limited, probably. If the doll is not limited and the mold is still on sale...not so much but then again, it depends on how good the doll looks.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?

Nope, I take care of my darlings very well^^

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?

Kyoshi, a DOD Zen, is 7 years old and Dantes, a CP Chiwoo, is 8 years old (I bought him second hand and he's been with me for 6 years). I love them. They are the only dolls I would never get rid of! and Kyoshi is very special to me, I see him as a son (this might sound freaky for some) if something bad happens to him(and Dantes) I would cry like I would cry over a human being.

As for my other dolls, I like them. But I see them as dolls and I'm finding it hard to bond with new dolls, I have sold 3 dolls in the last 2 years, I always keep the 'old' ones. They hold an immense value to me.

    16. What do you consider to be an "old" doll? Ten years plus.

Do you think the dolls hold their value? That's a tricky question. If the person gets tired of them and sells them, then effectively they haven't held their intrinsic value, at least to that person. But if the person can resell them for the same price they paid, the dolls have held their monetary value. I think that if dolls are well cared for they will hold their monetary value. Whether they hold their intrinsic value for you is something else and varies from person to person; it has nothing to do with the dolls.

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it? All of mine are relatively new.

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
My oldest dolls are two years old, and I plan to keep all of them forever.
      :aheartbea

    17. .....in a nutshell my oldest boy is 2 years old and I take good care of him and his other 3 brothers. I doubt I will every get rid of them or trade them. I see a few other sculpts I would like, but once I figure out I like a boy I have, he isn't leaving, even if somehow they get damaged.

    18. What do you consider to be an "old" doll?
When the doll yellowing at the most.

Do you think the dolls hold their value?
If she is a limited edition yes! And if she have not damage

Do you own an aged or damaged doll? If so, what do you plan to do with it?
I don't have a doll damaged, I have my first doll since 2010, she is young!

How old are your dolls and how long do you plan to keep them?
My first doll have 2 years and half, my last doll have five months, I love my 8 Bjds and I want to keep them long time, but if the life is too hard, I can sell them but It will be with many regrets.

    19. My oldest is seven but no...they likely won;t hold their worth in terms of money.

    20. Are you seriously comparing BJDs w/BEANY BABIES???? Remember, the cost of buying a Beany Baby (before the silly collector craze) was $2-5. I still pay $.50 to $1 for them at Goodwill, & sometimes $2. So I guess even Beany Babies hold up to 50% of their intrinsic value....

These dolls WILL be worth around what they originally COST (maybe w/a small % loss - 15-30%) over time. Some will undoubtably reach astronomical collectors' amounts, but I really can't imagine any really well-kept BJD going into a bargain bin at the local Goodwill (except out of complete & pure ignorance).
(Jumeau Bebes may have been designed as children's toys - really UPSCALE ones, but a LOT were made - a much larger portion of the population of that time bought them than buy BJDs today).
BJDs are very similiar to the Bebe dolls, since they will last. I daresay collectors 100 years from now will look for the ones still in their original (unmodified) condition, or else look for really famous modifications. Who knows, some of our BJD creations may end up in galleries in the next century.

Now, I am NOT buying BJDs as an investment, either - I don't see them going up in value over all, certainly not in my lifetime. But compared to spending my money on books, clothes, trips, DVDs, etc, or leaving it in the stupid money market accounts that lose crazy value overnight (yes I'm bitter ~sigh~) BJDs are at least something I'll be able to sell in the future for a decent amt of $$$. (will never stop buying books & traveling tho...)
