Do you believe that some owners mistreat their dolls?

Jun 9, 2008

    1. Ehm since the dolls aren't alive, I think people can do with them whatever they want to. If they let children play with them - so what?
I personally would NEVER let anyone play with my dolls, but hey, that's up to the owner.

    2. It's fair enough to buy a doll and do whatever you like with it. It's your money. I personally wouldn't, but hey! we all do different things...
However, what I would classify as abuse is someone mistreating the expensive or beloved inanimate posession of someone else. I have an old aquaintance who I always hid my treasured posessions from, because I knew she would be very rough with them and she did on many occasions break things of mine and then laugh. It annoyed me so much that I took to hiding my posessions from her. That is what I would call "rough" treatment.

    3. Even if the dolls are just objects to be bought, I can't imagine anyone spending so much money just to trash it. But there are people who do, I suppose--that's their perogative, but I think it's a shame and a waste, if not bad karma..

    4. she sounds....creepy. o_o

    5. Even though the dolls are just objects, and people are free to do whatever they please with something like a doll.. I still feel it's possible to 'mistreat' a doll by not taking proper care or caution with it. It's none of my business what people do with their things, but it does make me a bit sad to see.

But if it's something like a limited run doll that someone buys to destroy on purpose, that makes me lose a lot of respect for that person, because they're 'throwing away' money to destroy something that could've made someone else happy.

    6. I seriously hope not..
Okay I have to confess, I sat my doll in a chair that I knew was semi teeny and would tip over if he became unbalanced.. (like 4 inches his butt off the ground) I was doing something and my back was turned. I look at him and right when I was going to pick him up... He fell. O=O I almost cried, I kept saying sorry but he looked at me like.. "uh, i'm fine..."

but if there are any people abusing their dollies.. please don't ;.; (you spent all that money to love them, don't hurt them!!)

    7. I dont belive there is any right or wrong on how to own a doll. If there was i know i have broken about 50 of them.

I don't understand why people get so spazzy over silly things, to me enjoying what i spent my money on is what counts, as with every other thing i own. i would never buy a expensive dress then never wear it as it might get dirty or sun faded or ripped (like a doll) as that in my opinion is...well..

      a waste of money?

    8. My Doll when I get her (Mom is going to buy me a Bobobie Sprite for X-mas since that is the only thing I'm asking of her. Before you rant on me about how is it a cheep doll the mold is perfect for a character of mine.) I'm going to have fun with her. As in take her places including outside. However I'm not going to use oil things or sharpies on my doll because I know better.

    9. Well.. for ME, I'm not THAT very protective over mine. I'm just a bit sloppy with my doll.. I mean.. if she gets dirty or falls or anything I don't worry to much, it can be fixed/cleaned over time. I let people hold her without being paranoid or anything. In reality, it's a lifeless object. But then again, I spent tons of money on it so I'm atleast a little careful with her too.

But with other owner's dolls, I don't dare touch or anything to them.

I guess you can consider me as more of a "Collector" rather than a mother to these dolls. >_>a''

    10. Lunyka, you don't have to justify why you're getting a Sprite. No one should "rant" on you, and if they do then it just proves that there snobs in every hobby, don't take it personally. If you look around the forum, you'll see that Sprites are one of the most popular dolls here! I know I sure do love mine!
ok, back OT. Yes, people can mistreat their dolls if they want to, but why would they? I'll never understand. Those collectors who handel their dolls with kid gloves (literally) would probably think I mistreat my dolls 'cause I haul them around with me and they get "played with" a lot. But then again I might think a doll sitting on a shelf it's whole "life" would be kind of sad, too. How you treat them all depends on why you collect them in the first place, I suppose. But yeah, those people who break or damage their posessions on purpose are certianly free to do so, but to me those people are like little kids throwing tantrums. Very immature.

    11. yup I would hardly call her a friend of mine anymore

    12. Exactly what I wanted to say. =)

    13. If people buy a $600 doll just to destroy it... wow, that $600 could have been put to better use. It's not "abuse", it's simply stupidity at its worst.

    14. I have been told by a BJD fan that I haven't been "looking after my doll" For god sakes I tuck him into bed everynight which obviousely isn't enough.:sweat (yes I know I am a weirdo)

I clean him from clouthes marks and wash and brush wigs. (Which apparently I haven't been doing proberly) I bought a fur wig recently because the up keep on Theo looong hair was doing my head in.

But what strikes me even more is this person moaned about how I wasn't looking after him. A. dosen't have one and B. Claims he knows more about him then I do.

I let my friend the same guy hold him the first time he did this he dropped him and let him fall. His magnet came out of his head and I had to spend the rest of the time fixing it which was a nightmare.

The secound time my friend was standing him up he "dropped" him again. Now I am slightly suspiouse he had plenty of time to scope him up and let him smack his head on the carpet. He didn't even apologise and the whole thing happened slowly.

I'm a little miffed he said I wasn't looking after my doll proberly. As Theo has yet to be outside because it is so hot and I am worride about the sun. And in my room always put him in the shade.

I guess really though? The only way I am not looking after him is letting this guy who says I don't look after him hold my doll.

    15. Well I do think that some people over do it...I understand how some people want their dolls protected, and will keep them behind glass--mainly as a display. I'd never put my dolls behind glass, or simply let them collect dust. I think they need love like everything else, and shouldn't be left out of things. SeNii comes just about everywhere I can bring him, even if it's just from one room to another.

I know that some BJD owners let children play with their BJDs, and I think that's fine...as long as the children are responsible. For instance, I'd let my younger cousin Faith play with SeNii, because I know she takes care of other people's property like it's no body's business...but I wouldn't dare let my cousin Spencer touch SeNii--he's a bouncy, messy, little kid. Not a bad thing...but I want SeNii in one piece and returned with no slimy arms, thank you. I think that people should respect their dolls...like everything else they own...just like keeping a house clean rather than letting the dirt take over ><

These dolls are amazing, they're all carefully molded and cast, and the time it takes to prepare them is just intense. They deserve to be loved and kept in good condition, I think we owe it to the amazing artisans who put them together to do so.

So yeah...sadly I think there are some people who mistreat these poor beauties. I don't think anyone does it intentially of course.

    16. I figure, if a person buys a doll and doesn't take care of it properly, then whatever. It's theirs. It's not mine. I personally would try my best to take good care of my dolls. And if someone came around telling me I was doing a poor job, I would be particularly offended.

I wouldn't think it's right for another doll owner to be careless with their dolls, because they are expensive and they took a lot of effort and care to make. So to me, that would be like a wasted effort on the artist's end *and that's very sad*. But, I also figure that now it's a possession of this other person and it was their money. They can do whatever they want with them. Who am I to judge what people do?

    17. Oh yes, I'm so far behind. But as I was reading through the beginning of this thread I saw this post and my brain yelped "YES!!"

Stupid anime figures anyway. Dust-catching visual clutter and I can't hug them. ;-) Anyone need some figures? ^_^ Cheap?

I'd address the actual topic if I had anything substantive to add, but I think everyone has covered what I would have said.

So... I'll address a side issue. I think that it approaches emotional abuse -- and this is only my opinion, mind you -- when this kind of topic is debated and we once again get to hear 100 variations on "OMG they're just toys/inanimate objects, get over it." Yes, we all know that. You don't need to point it out. They're plastic, customizable toys.

Let people enjoy their magic a bit. Everyone needs play, and escape, and if some of us choose to think of our resin companions as being "real" like the Velveteen Rabbit, so be it. Let it go.

    18. I paid for my dolls. I shall do what I like with them! Until they start complaining verbally, that is :X.

With all the crazy crap that can and does go wrong in this fandom, everyone should damn well have the chance to actually enjoy it as they see fit XD.

Money is fleeting. Life is fleeting. If the only thing in the world that makes you happy is shooting a Volks Tsukasa out of a cannon on a Thursday while wearing clown shoes, who am I to judge? Just don't switch to kittens! D:

    19. loloh that was epic. lol

    20. Many people are saying how it isn't an animate object and so abusing it isn't at the same level as that of a living being. I honestly would find myself heartbroken though if I saw someone abusing anything, animate or inanimate...but then again, I'm the one who talks to my computer and apologizes when I drop her (I might be crazy ^_^;)
