Do you buy dolls and finish them later?

Apr 16, 2012

    1. While I don't have to 'finish' a doll, per-say, before I get another (all my guys were bought practically in pairs of two) I do like to finish them before a year is up. Take Tremis, my Sprite boy. He was a huge project when he first got home because he had to be dyed before he could be painted. I had to wait on custom eyes, but I had his wig waiting. And before he was done my other doll came and needed a face-up and tattoos that I didn't get done right away. But within a year they were finished.

Tremis just got re-done and looks better now than he did before! The other doll needs a slight touch-up on his tattoos, but I'll do it some other time. They still look fine. Mostly I like to spend about a year making the ones I 'just got' look perfect before I work on another, but that's because I have a bad habit of not finishing things that I start. XD

    2. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later?

I do. I like floating heads. LOL Two of my dolls are hybrids and another one is about to undergo a massive body blushing experiment. I think it's really fun having something to work on. I enjoy the customization process. I have more pride in my dolls that have been customized. I think more pride comes in from something you made yourself. I'm a DIY person, anyway.

Or do you like to have the full package from the start?

When I was new, this was true. I have 4 dolls that will come from the factory with faceups done. Mostly this is because I love the doll and I love the faceup. It happened to align that way. However one of those dolls is the one I mentioned will be body blushed.

Would it be better to work on the dolls I have first before adding a new addition?

That's up to you. Here's how I see it. Some dolls are limited so I'd jump on that if you can. If it's a sculpt that's not going anywhere, put it off. I'm the type that likes to have things done before moving on.

    3. All of my dolls are as yet unfinished. I prefer to buy blank sculpts and build the character from scratch, picking eyes, wigs, face-up etc. after I've gotten the body. If they're lucky there's an outfit waiting for them when they get here, but usually the sit around naked as the day they were cast until I get something worked out. :sweat I was planning on getting another doll here soon even though none of my current ones are finished, but hubs and I came to an understanding that I have to finish what I've got first. Oh well, I'm almost done.

    4. For my part I consider that my dolls are never completely finished, they are in constant evolution.
My very first doll has just changed her wig for the 5th time in two years, and she wears her 3rd pair of eyes !

I 've got a MNF Woosoo vampire elf girl head for 6 month, but she doesn't have body yet. I bought it because it was an occasion, but I didn't plan to do something with it immediately because I didn't have the money for her complet customization.

And I like to work on different dolls in the same time, because they have different style and make me explore new ways of creativity.

    5. Oh Gourd, almost all of my dolls are WIPs.... But I think it's fun to watch them slowly turn into themselves and develop, especially if they won't tell you who they are at first. I just wish I could finish most of them FASTER, but I can only go so fast as my funds allow.....

    6. I buy blank girls to work with them later

    7. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later?
Yes, I get tempted then click. I leave them in their boxes until their number comes up for either sale or customizations.
Or do you like to have the full package from the start?
Yes I do. I like to own the fullset because I usually enjoy the BJD clothing and apparel almost as much as the doll. If the fullset is not very fun, I don't know if I would get the doll.

The thing is that some dolls you never fall for, and accumulating them takes away the energy and money from enjoying the ones you look forward to playing.

    8. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later?
I do this all the time. My dolls, no matter what comes with them, are always a work in progress. Out of all the dolls I have, I consider only one finished - she's fully blushed, has a couple of outfits, wigs, eyes and little accessories. But, even still, I will probably end up sueding her sometime in the future, so she's not 100% done. However, all of my dolls have at least one wig and one pair of eyes - over the years, I've accumulated quite a stash of wigs and eyes (those that came free with the doll or simply didn't work out for the intended doll, all go in The Stash), so no one is ever bald or eyeless around here .

Or do you like to have the full package from the start?
I love full packages as well. It really depends on the package being offered. For example, I specifically wait on full package from Dear Mine because they are always amazing - face-ups, clothes and accessories are top notch. Other companies don't generally release full-sets that appeal to me, so I opt for blank, nude dolls instead. Either way, I enjoy all my dolls equally and there's always something to tweak about a doll, no matter what she came with.

    9. Do you buy dolls that you plan to finish later?

The head that I have at home is actually going on three years with me and still incomplete! >.<

He did have some direction when I first bought him as a full doll, but later sold off the body because I wanted to get him something more suited to my tastes. Afterward I took a break from the hobby for almost a year, and only now have I begun to get back into it, but by now my taste in dolls has changed so that I'm no longer particularly fond of the aesthetic of the company that he's from. Nevertheless, I'm thinking about modding him because I doubt I could part with him either!

So to answer your question, while I'm looking at dolls I always tend to think about how I might go about "finishing" them, in a sense. Being able to plan all that stuff out is what draws me to the hobby in the first place.

Or do you like to have the full package from the start?

I used to like the idea of full set dolls, but at this point in time I doubt I'd buy many fullset unless there was something really spectacular about the clothes or the faceup. I guess I've just become too picky to be happy with a fullset? I love to think about making a doll look as I envision it, so as a general statement I think I'd prefer to go with a doll that wasn't influenced by the company's idea.

That being said, there are some fullset dolls that I'd LOVE to have (-cough- Heliot: Desert Hermit -cough-) but for the most part, a clean slate is the way I'd tend towards going. ^^

    10. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later?
I have on occasion when I began the hobby, but it doesn't sit well with me.

Or do you like to have the full package from the start?
Finished is preferred to a long work in progress, but updates later on or even reinventions are possibilites. I tend to buy everything for a doll before it arrives, except in the case of fullsets. Making a set so to speak, and fleshing a character out with accessories etc. brings me great joy. Completion makes me feel good. :D

    11. If I buy a doll in parts, I definitely intend to finish it. I like having a complete doll, meaning head and body. I prefer to add my own choice of eyes, clothing and wigs. When I first started buying BJDs, I overwhelmingly preferred to have a complete doll with a default faceup. But in the past few years I have purchased floating heads and headless bodies with the intention of creating my own doll. And now I see the advantages of being able to choose the exact faceup I want for a BJD, so they don't look like anyone else in my resin family. And I have found that I really don't like my BJD heads to share bodies! I want them to have their own bodies.

    12. I don't think my dolls are ever truly "finished", despite appearances to the contrary. Yes, they all have face-ups, wigs, eyes & outfits complete with footwear - but they get their face-ups updated every couple of years or so, to reflect my current level of skill, make new clothes & wigs for them, try out slightly different eyes - humans don't stay the same, and nor do my dolls. When one becomes satic for too long, I find myself losing interest in them.

I don't buy fullsets; I prefer blank dolls - I do all my own face-ups, and I much prefer the gradual process of discovering a doll's personality by completing them myself. even if I did buy a fullset doll, I'd get it without a face-up - and I can guarantee that within a year it wouldn't be the fullset doll but my own creation.

    13. I love doing my own faceups. I do not own a single doll that hasn't had more than one faceup simply because I've never been fully satisfied with the end result!
Currently I have 4 larger size girls in the house and every single one of them have blank lips right now because I'm re-working their lip colors. Lips are my most difficult area for some reason.

But to answer the question more directly - it does not bother me one iota to constantly have dolls in the works; whether I'm going ahead with other doll purchases or not. Doing faceups is a hobby in itself for me.

    14. I used to order some clothes/wig/eyes at the same time I would order a doll.... but not anymore :sweat
      my iplehouse claude is still bald and blank after about 4 months with me 0_0;;

    15. I used to try and complete every new doll's look as fast as possible, but after my first bigger project came in, I kinda gave up and just took my time, with new dolls on the way or not.
Most of my characters evolve over time anyway, so I never actually "finish" one of my dolls. They get different hairstyles, different face ups, different clothes when I feel it'd be a good idea, with the exception of maybe 2 or 3. That's part of the fun.

    16. Yes, I buy dolls to finish them in my own time. I do like them to have eyes and a wig when they arrive, but even that doesn't always work out. Some of my dolls are hybrids, so sometimes I have heads sitting around without bodies.

My first doll was a full set, just because I didn't know how this BJD stuff was going to work out for me and I didn't want to end up with a blank doll. But I'm rather patient with my dolls now that I have several. I don't mind working on one while leaving another sitting around in nothing but a bit of cloth and a string... I just like to know that they are there, so I want them in my hands even if I haven't got time to finish them in the immediate future. My inspiration waxes and wanes too, so I never force anything.

    17. Absolutely! I buy dolls I plan to work on as well as dolls that are partially or completely finished. I like to have projects despite not having a heck of a lot of time to get them done. My studio is filled with projects! Yes, I do finish some! Yay!

    18. *Looks at the lineup of seven anthros and one charity auction doll and two re-shells to do*.

    19. I do a bit of both. I buy several dolls very quickly after each other, but I make sure they have at least a wig, eyes, an outfit and shoes to begin with. Then I take a break and buy proper things.

    20. I went on a buying spree and only have on completed and pleany to dress

I have a new idea and get distracted with that one and get all of the stuff for that

Then go back to the first

      Then get a new idea....

      Its a vicious circle...
