1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you buy dolls and finish them later?

Apr 16, 2012

    1. The best-laid plans...

I've bought "completed" dolls, I've had dolls in pieces or bare in their boxes for years before I got around to them. I've started finally working up the presentation on one, say, only to have a surprise purchase jump ahead in line and demand all the attention and time I have.

OTOH, I've worked on a doll and gotten him to where I wanted, only to realize after a while that he doesn't suit the idea I had (or the body isn't cooperating), and he's back in limbo --

    2. I'm like several other posters here, my dolls are always being worked on and are never exactly finished. When a new doll arrives home I do almost always complete their faceup and make them a wig within a week or two, try to get eyes in the right colour, and make or modify some kind of clothing for them even if it's not their own proper outfit. But at any time I may add to or re-do a faceup if I get a new idea or think I can make it better, or make a new wig for a different style. I may find eyes that are a slightly different colour or size that might work better. I'm always fiddling with clothing projects, adding layers or accessories to their costumes. Sometimes a whole completed display outfit will go back into the "dress-up box" if I decide a character needs some other style or colour scheme. The cool thing is, the dolls seem to become more and more themselves every time I make a change. When I look at some of the ones I've tweaked and experimented with the most, I think that I could never have sat down and planned out their looks ahead of time, or if I had I probably wouldn't have come up with something as cool. Developing them over the years has been way more fun!

    3. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later?
Sometimes dolls only become available at inconvenient times-- on limited sales or on a special event or on ebay or the Marketplace... If I really want that doll, I may buy it even though I can't finish it immediately.

Or do you like to have the full package from the start?
I DO like having the full package from the start, however. I like planning for a doll and will start shopping for items for it before it arrives, if at all possible. I think this is because when my first doll arrived, I had no clothes and was sad that I couldn't show him off, take photos, play with him, right away... I like to do all that as soon as I possibly can with a doll.

BUT--everyone is different. They should do what they want to do--do what gives them the most pleasure. If they wish to buy first and wait to complete a doll, that's all right. But if you are feeling that you should play with your dolls more instead of buying new ones, then maybe you should try to do something about that! :)

    4. I started out buying full sets, but as I went along I started buying doll with only the face up. I buy cloths as I go along, and shoes. I also buy wigs, and eyes. So when I get a doll I can now change her, or him into any look that I want until I hit on one that I really think fits. That's the best part of this whole thing to me, is how much I can change.

    5. I buy and finish them later. Since I am usually busy with so much work, school, other hobbies, I have been very slowly finishing up my dolls. Just this week I managed to give my first faceup to one of the 3 blank girls I have had for about two months now >_< sadly I feel I am too slow at finishing them, they have to share one shirt and only have two skirts between them, but I'm still new to doll owning so hopefully I'll get the hang of getting them set up faster.
I have never bought full sets though, both because I like to customize the doll myself and because I can save money by buying basic dolls.

    6. My first doll stills sits unfinished even by now :/ ( I bought it 2 years ago )

    7. it really depends, i will soon have 2 floating head waiting for bodies while i work on 2 dolls. only 1 is completes but i continue to make clothing and do faceups for her.

    8. Hehe.. to me I feel guilty for having dolls sitting naked in their boxes. It would be best if they have clothes from the start... It might take me ages to get their clothes.. but at least I'll get there eventually ^^

    9. There's only one doll that I've ever bought fullset and kept that way, which was Raurencio Stella. I also got the IH Bianca fullset and don't plan to change a thing about her faceup! I love pretty much everything she came with, though I did buy her eyes because that wasn't an option.

Aside from them though, I've changed every other doll I own one way or the other. I love Miyabi and Silver eyes, so usually I stake them out for a while trying to find the perfect ones. Also like doing my own faceups as part of the bonding experience. Used to be I could keep up with the customization, but recently LEs that I like have popped up like daisies, and so I've got a number of them waiting in line to get new faceups and/or the right eyes. As much as possible I try to have eyes waiting for them when they get here, but every now and then it's a long dry spell and I can't find the perfect ones.

I love the customization process though, even if it takes me a long time to complete any doll. I feel like there's always some kind of project in motion and always something new to learn.

    10. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later?
I tend to buy a lot of stuff for a doll beforehand, which is bad in the cases that I changed my mind on getting certain dolls. Yet, I have everything for a doll that's never going to be.

Or do you like to have the full package from the start?
I like full packages, but only if they fit what I have in mind.

    11. I like to TRY to get my dolls complete before they arrive, but if I'm planning on doing a faceup for them they'll usually stay incomplete for at least a little while.

    12. I would definitely like to have all of the basics down first such as name, personality, bit of back story, but I wouldn't mind having my character develop and evolve and change the longer I have him. It's much like people and how they grow and change c:

    13. Since Ive made this thread, Ive changed my view on things! :)

Ive sold a doll and it was so tempting to put the cash aside for the next one on my list.
But I realized that building a clothing and accessory collection is very important.
A few nice outfits can really help you to enjoy the doll and the hobby, and of course it helps to bring their character to life. And as beautiful and doll bodies are, I didn't buy my girl to be nakie all the time!

So before I add any new dolls, Im going to make sure Im happy with the look of my current one.
Even if she's not complete (that takes a long time), as long as she has a look started that I'm happy with.

    14. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later?
Yep! I mostly collect LEs, so I always prioritise snagging new dolls over finishing ones I own. I figure I have as much time as I need to finish my dolls, but LEs are only available for a short time. I do buy all my dolls with company face-ups and I try to keep temporary parts (wigs, eyes, outfits) on hand, which means I can enjoy my dolls even if they are technically incomplete.

    15. I planned to complete my first doll, but everything changed when I bought other dolls instead of the things the first one needed. I'm about to buy the fourth dolly but after that there will be no more resin, I'd really love to finish these guys as soon as I can :sweat

    16. I personally have not done so yet. I'm pretty new to the hobby so I haven't run into this yet but if a doll came along and all I could afford at the time was the head I think I would just buy it and then work towards finishing it later. If it's a rare mold or something I've been looking for it's better to get what I can and finish later than to miss out on something because I can't finish it all at once.

    17. Do you buy dolls you plan to finish later? Or do you like to have the full package from the start?
I always buy my dolls and finish them later. At the minute, I am concentrating on getting the dolls that I want, then later this year, I can concentrate on getting them all completed.
