1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

Do you buy old sculpts or new sculpts?

Aug 31, 2014

    1. I would prefer new sculpt if there is still available for me to order. But sometime it is just difficult because some sculpts are limited and have to buy from second hand market only...

    2. I don't have a preference. I like what I like so... whatever doll appeals to me.

I have some newer dolls in my wish list as well as a couple of older dolls.

I wanted a cp el and lishe back in the day so when I rejoined the hobby I was stoked to see they were still available and intend to buy both eventually.

    3. Well, I've gotten into Minifee again, but I prefer older dolls. I only even look at certain companies too...

    4. Same here. I don't strictly buy new sculpts, or strictly buy old sculpts - I buy what appeals to me regardless of when that particular sculpt came out.

    5. Me too, Helen!

I buy a lot of second hand dolls too, Sandwich. (Love them!) I find that I buy new BJDs only when I cannot get a sculpt I love any other way. My long awaited, now discontinued tan Dollzone Linlan was purchased new, right when DZ started doing tan resin again in March 2012. Nostalgia also has a lot to do with the dolls I like, such as my second hand Migidoll Miho, who just arrived.

Hallowie29, I've haunted the marketplace looking for secondhand dolls too, especially when I know which doll I am looking for. I think it is my favorite place to buy BJDs that are no longer being made.

I find I still prefer the less realistic style sculpts, dollieaddict. Lishe and El ar classics. :aheartbea

Rynn007, I think of Minifees as old-style, because they still have the large eyes and proportionately large heads with an anime esthetic popular in early dolls! I feel the same way about some of Volks' newer sculpts in the old style, like Kazuya Kujo and SD FCS F-40. Also, since I already know what I like, I tend to look at the same companies and don't go searching for new sculpts. I don't discover new sculpts unless my friends send me links. LOL!

    6. I actually prefer realistic these days, but lishe and el... something about them. Gotta have em. They're perfect and when I see pics of them it takes me right back to the good ole days [emoji3]

    7. I do both :sweat I'm always happy to snag an older sculpt that I've been longing for (see: multiple FCE dolls from Soom), but I'm also just as happy to jump on new releases as well. I prefer new dolls to secondhand ones, though, which means it's often easier for me to get new sculpts rather than older ones.

    8. Doesn't really matter to me I go by the doll itself. Sometimes I feel weird when I know lots of people hown the same sculpt (ex. Mei Bobobie, it seems everyone has had/has her at one time). I do look at the new ones and consider it but not because it is new but because I like the doll. Limited Edition I buy from time to time because I like them and they are Limited. Looks are what matter not age.

    9. The only newer sculpts I tend to like are from small studios that have a real art doll feel to them. Like Angel Egg and ShinyDoll. I love the older Volks and CP sculpts and hunt for them in the MP from time to time. Most of my collection are highly stylized, anime featured dolls and those are just not so popular right now.

    10. I would have to say that I lean toward ones that have been out for a while. I've only been in the hobby for a few years so they're all pretty new to me anyway. I have two limited dolls that I purchased during the order period and I bought my Doll Chateau Bella the same year that company came out. I also have a couple sculpts on my wish list that are new but they probably won't be by the time I get around to getting them!

    11. Oh, definitely old! The only new/ish sculpts who have really stuck with me recently have been a few Iplehouse EID and SID, and (on the other extreme) Tinybear Fallow and Heartstrung Ruse. But in my favorite 60cm size range, I'm always drawn first to the "oldschool" dolls, and I love giving a new lease on life to fabulous early BJDs that are languishing in the Marketplace, Y!J, or eBay.

I really liked what an earlier post said about the smooth elegance of the single-jointed body, too. I don't ask much of my dolls in terms of posing -- as long as they can sit up straight and stand solidly, they make me happy. ;)

    12. I don't think I bias in one direction or the other. Old or new, I buy the sculpts I fall for. And for me, a lot of what decides that, is in the look of the face. I like softer, 'pretty' looking boys and sweeter looking girls. Having a nice body helps, but even if the body doesn't match my aesthetic, I feel like finding a decent way to hybrid a body with a head I love just takes a bit of research. Although..........

    13. I suppose I prefer them about equally. I like some of the older sculpts like Dollshe Saint, Migidoll Miho, and Soom Amber/Heliot/Euclase/etc, but also really like the newer sculpts as well. It just depends on the doll, but I prefer buying from the company if possible.

    14. We have old and new sculpts but more old than new XD The only new doll we have on layaway is IH Edan. The others are older sculpts - one of which is a pre-pre-pre-pre loved XD

    15. Old, all the way. Most new sculpts do nothing for me; the sole exception lately has been IoS Levi, and that's way more because I am a shameless Levi fangirl. (Although truthfully, should I do a Levi doll, I'm more inclined to go ACWNR-era Levi rather than current storyline Levi, and that would be a slightly different sculpt that would hopefully be less expensive.) Everything else on the wishlist has been out for years upon years. I'd say I'm fortunate in that my tastes aren't catered to by current doll trends...but everything I want is effing spendy so it's kind of a catch-22.

    16. Both but my saving plans are always for the older sculpts. I think it's just that I'm trying to buy the dolls that I wanted for a longtime and feel safe about. But my impulse buying has always been newer or new sculpts xD

    17. I only have one doll so far, a Bobobie that is till being sold. I bought her just because I liked her and also because she was a bargain! I'm new to this and not familiar with all the brand name and sculpts, so I just want to buy what appeals to me, tbh.

    18. Fachtna, my second-hand Bobobie Weylin was a bargain too! Sometimes you can't beat getting an older doll second-hand when they're such a good price.

Evoi, I've found that some newer limited sculpts end up being impulse buys for me too, because I'm afraid I'll miss them forever!

I am like you, Tez, most new sculpts do nothing for me. Most, but not all!

skipperofotters05, I have several pre-loved dolls too. And definitely more old than new. I haven't regretted any of them, though.

Ultimately for me, it does depend on the doll itself, AmberLeigh. But sometimes I can't pass up a second-hand bargain!

Generally I don't like doing hybrids, Caffeinemancer, but some old companies only made heads and not bodies when I was purchasing. (k-doll and Ninodoll come to mind.) I like girls with bigger eyes, which is not the most popular esthetic of new dolls at the moment.

60cm range is my favorite too, Cynthia. I've rescued a large share of my own from the marketplace. And I like the single jointed look. or double jointed dolls with the peanut "hidden", without floating elbow or knee caps.

      LOL!!

My collection is like that too. Strangely my taste has changed very little since I started buying BJDs. But I don't lean toward artist dolls at all, I pretty much stay with the larger companies.

Redfrost, ultimately it's the look of the doll that matters to me too, but I still gravitate toward the older ones, or new ones sculpted in an older, less popular style.

That's true, sharnofshade, some old sculpts are near impossible to get!

    19. Both--probably a bit more new because I already have so many older sculpts... but there are some older sculpts I really love and are on and off my Wish List.

    20. april, my wish list keeps changing too! I keep meaning to get a Volks Cecil/Cecile someday, he's a real classic. But the right one just hasn't come along. And I just got a Ninodoll Iz, after wanting one since probably 2006.
