Do you buy old sculpts or new sculpts?

Aug 31, 2014

    1. I prefer buying second hand and getting the doll immediately rather than waiting for months. That makes most of my dolls older sculpts. I am not into the really older anime or the newer realistic "fashion doll" look.

    2. I'm new to the bjds and I suppose that I'd be inclined to the newer models mainly on the basis that I think the quality may be better. I could be wrong though. Saying that I do like Iplehouse's Lahela and would love to get her though I don't think she's available through Iplehouse any more.

    3. I tend to look at the new ones coming out
So most of my dolls are new
I think new ones come with newer body types and more flexibility so it might be better to focus on new

    4. I was about to say that I quite like some new sculpts when I realised that 2008/9 is already half a decade ago. @_@ For larger dolls, it seems that I am fond of things from around that era or earlier. For smaller dolls, I am still seeing sculpts that I like coming out every once in awhile, so I do like new sculpts. :)

    5. For me as I joined the hobby lately, most of the sculpts that I like are old I don't run after trendy newly released BJDs, I only buy what I like, for example I have 3 Iplehouse dolls on their old bodies and the sculpt it self I think available since 2011, and even my next doll is not newly released, It's Iplehouse EID Aaliyah sculpt, I think she had been released back in 2012, so it depends on what you really like and matches with your taste, and honestly , I think most of the new sculpts are not as attractive as the old ones, sometimes even I see some are just looking the same as an old sculpt with little modifications !!!

    6. I prefere new sculpts, because I can not find the one doll that I really want to buy among already existing dolls.
In the meantime, I hope that some company will release the doll of my dream.

    7. I like anime style head sculpts so that's why I like Dollfies. I only have head sculpts that are at least 3 years old. I haven't bought a new head sculpt yet. There hasn't been one that has interested me yet.

    8. With a few exceptions, I definitely prefer old sculpts. Looking at my collection I have few new and keep gravitating towards the old, crusty, sometimes discontinued molds that no one wants anymore. Which is nice because I can buy them second-hand kinda easy XD

This is also funny because way back when I started collecting I actively didn't like a lot of the molds I own now...Not sure what happened there...

    9. This is an interesting topic!
For me, it seems the slightly older sculpts? I think my newest sculpt would be my YoSD Isao (first released in 2011), but as you know he's based on the SD13 Isao frst released in 2004... Technically the newest would probably be my incoming Dollzone Eudora (released Dec 2013), but I don't really see her as a doll like the others, she's just a cute little creature :chibi
I do like newer sculpts as well, but I don't get the feeling I need to have them, I'm content just seeing them in awesome photos and what not.
It's not a rule I have though, so if the right one comes along I may get it :)

VampireAngel13, that's exactly what's happened to me, wouldn't have believed it if anyone told me five years ago I'd have a Volks Lucas and a Volks Anais

Edit: Totally forgot about Dollclans Vezeto, that guy is something else! :aheartbea (though I'm not sure when he was first released)

    10. If I were to get another doll, it would probably be a newer sculpt because I prefer the more realistic styles that are being released nowadays as opposed to the anime look of the past. Currently I have only two and one is older but still fairly realistic and the other while, not new anymore, I did get it pretty soon after it's release.

    11. LOL Volks Lucas/Chris was one of mine too! One day I looked at him and was like "I don't hate that, WTH was I thinking?" *wants*

    12. It just goes to show that tastes do change, and some sculpts grow on you ;)

    13. VampireAngel13, the exact same thing happened to me, too. When I started, I couldn't see why so many people were so obsessive over Delfs, especially Shiwoo and El; they didn't appeal to me, there were too many of them around, the size was all wrong for me, and besides, I was only collecting elves and fantasy creatures, why would I ever want one of those things? And here I am six years later, the very happy owner of both of those boys.

I do enjoy seeing the newer sculpts, but since I bought a large part of my collection in those early days, that's where my collection still sits, and even if I have had some evolution of taste (how did I ever end up one of the Shiwoo-obsessed???) the newer sculpts I've added tend to share enough aesthetic that they can fit in nicely with my older ones.

    14. Right? They really do grow on you.

Ha me too! I was very much not a CP fan, and especially didn't want El or Chiwoo and I ended up with both. Well, I sold my first El, but it was for character reasons, not because I fell out of love with the mold. The new one will probably stick around. I'm super-attached to my Chiwoo however, he's one of my favs. I never would have thought that years ago.

This is actually why I think I enjoy the older molds too -- so many of the new ones are the super-realistic style and that doesn't go with the collection I've ended up with over the years. Older molds just mesh better with my core group of dolls.

Maybe my tastes never really changed so much as just broadened to include sculpts I didn't care for before.

    15. Gail in Az, there is nothing like instant gratification! Plus I like "rescuing" a doll no one seems to want that has been sitting on the marketplace for a while.

Nauticaa and nadanera, I think advances in engineering are a distinct advantage to buying a new BJD.

LOL, leXis, I do exactly the same thing! I'm adding a Volks Mark to my family soon, and I'm so excited about getting a newer Volks sculpt -- then I remembered he's from 2007!!

Moor Romeo, congratulations on getting your Aaliyah! And Aureolle, I hope you find the doll of your dreams.

redxmaverick, the anime style is my favorite too. Probably my most realistic sculpt is Unidoll Jace, and he's definitely not new. But I think he still looks okay with my other BJDs, he's not out of place.

VampireAngel13, I feel like my taste in BJDs has evolved a little if not completely changed. (Jace is proof of that.) But Volks is still my favorite "go to" doll company. I don't love all their sculpts, but I know they will always have something I like.

And Motiko, I find I'm perfectly content enjoying pictures of the dolls my friends collect, even if the dolls are not my style. I don't have any rules, though I do steer away from BJDs that wouldn't look right with my current family. Even when I do get new sculpts, I prefer the ones that are in an older, less realistic style. I like how Volks does "throwbacks", like the SD FCS F-40 and F-32. Plus they don't abandon their older sculpts like the F-01.

Miu Len, the sky seems to be the limit on new BJDs! They seem to be more realistic or more fantastic than ever before.

vicemage, I remember when I first started seeing Dollzone dolls, I liked them but didn't feel they were quite right for me. The guys I liked were all 70cm, and I thought they would be too tall. Then I had the option to trade for one... and now I have six tall Dollzone guys (one's a hybrid). I bought some older DZ girls with the same esthetic to go along with them. And they look good with my Volks, too. But their new esthetic is so far from what they used to do! I don't feel the same about their new sculpts. I feel like Fairyland new sculpts have kept the same image and feel of the older Luts CP sculpts.

    16. I like both.

    17. Really depends on how I like the new or old sculpt~ but I stopped the hobby for awhile and when I came back there are so many new companies and new sculpts, some new ones are very beautiful but somehow, I'm gearing towards the old sculpts and looking for them in the marketplace.

    18. Czechmix, I feel like I keep getting dragged back to the older sculpts. But in a good way. LOL!

Kamotekid, I find myself looking at old sculpts constantly in the marketplace -- even at ones I already have! Every time I see a Dollzone Yuu there, I have to stop and look at him.

    19. I buy new sculpts! Just this year I have bought a freakstyle Salome, Heartstrung ruse and LLT Blue Magpie!

    20. tillyfromnowhere, do you like how they all look together? I do envy people whose dolls are drastically different, because I feel I have to keep mine in the same size and esthetic range.
